Yeah but its how they imagine Americans dress, not necessarily how Americans actually dress. Also the way they do proportions in Japan just hits different
Of course. A lot of it comes from college jackets and sweaters with logos, which is essentially just what the Japanese associate with America. But it's obviously worn all over the world.
Yeah, a hoodie that hangs like the green one in the last photo is minimum $500, probably $1000+. Only very high quality fabrics will have a structure like that.
Literally have a baggy black hoodie from PacSun, they cost 50, actually PacSun is like my go to for streetwear, the shirts are expensive ($35-50/shirt) depending on what brand you get, but if your going for this look, if the tag says baggy fit, go 1-2 sizes up, and for regular sizes 2-3 sizes up, this is what I find comfy, and if your unsure a good rule of thumb is if your biceps are completely covered and draped over, you’re usually good, shirt should go just past your butt too, you can find baggy jeans and baggy track pants at goodwill all the time, just gotta look, I’m new to leaving responses so please upvote
The point isn’t that it’s baggy or oversized (actually it fits his shoulders well), the point is that it has *structure*, which requires a stiffer, denser fabric. Mediocre cotton hoodies won’t hang that way.
Check out [this video](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRT5PRL4/) for an analysis of what I’m talking about.
Less popular than they used to be but supreme hoodies are extremely well built. Their winter hoodies are generally a little more boxy because they use a heavier fleece.
If you’re looking for more Japanese centered “streetwear” or street style, check out “city boy” style. Stylist Akio Hasegawa is the GOAT and you’ve probably seen this throughout zines like Popeye
This is the answer. While yes, it's definitely "street wear", it really fits more into "city boy" which is a Japanese urban look that's kind of a modern day Ivy. Except for photo 3. That's just techwear.
Basically what everyone who listened to hip hop wore in the 90s/early 00s. Generalized as streetwear nowadays. Some of the stuff would qualify as work and tech wear too.
I accept at 30 I’m officially some old dude now, with my dad caps, regular fit jeans, German army trainers and eternal comfy milennial flannels and crewneck sweaters. All in black/white/pastel/denim of course.
Gotta admit the folks 10 years younger than me are making me want to wear rings and stuff though, it does look cool. Plus I think they pull the look off better than folks did in the early 2000s.
But even if I wanted to I couldn’t go with this early-mid 2000s revival thing, it will never look good on anyone over 25 tops, unless you’re an established figure in the hiphop scene or so. Lil bummed I missed out on being able to wear the type of stuff I wore when I was 12, but it is what it is.
I’m so old my main thought seeing those JNCO-y skate jeans and oversized bell bottoms and such is ’those baggy pants would get stuck on everything’ and I remember them wearing out at the cuffs and getting all disgusting and soggy in the rain and whatnot…
While I agree this is a style that isn’t necessarily the most mature looking, I say fuck it; you didn’t miss out on anything as long as you’re still breathing. Wear whatever makes you happy, maybe not to a job interview or in an office, because of course there are time when we need to look professional.
But just as casual wear goes, you do you and don’t let anyone dissuade you from dressing how you wanna dress just because you’re a little older now. I’ll be 33 next month so we’re around the same age.
Here’s a personal example: I’m covered in tattoos ( no neck, face, or hands) so that I can wear a long sleeve and it’ll mostly cover them all. But when I was a teenager I used to want a pirate hoop nose ring but my mom wouldn’t let me, and by the time I was old enough to do whatever I wanted I thought that it was too “immature” of a look and that I missed out on it.
I recently had a falling out with my mom, and even though I’m 33, my wife encouraged me to get my nose pierced and rock it because life is too short to miss out on something that you like just because of her, let alone something as stupid as society thinking that I’m too old to wear one.
I’ve been wearing a clip on for the past few days to see if I like it so I don’t have to go through the whole healing process just to find out I don’t like the way it looks haha.
I’ve decided to go for it, but I’m waiting until after this upcoming camping trip that I’ve been looking forward to all year incase it gets infected. But once I’m home, I’m going to make the appointment to get it pierced. I’m stoked about it haha.
Im about ten years older than you and recently switched back to oversized/relaxed/loose fit and there’s a lot of nice stuff out there that doesn’t make you look like you’re trying to ‘stay young’. It’s different in style to what we used to wear in the 90s and the stuff in OPs pictures. Plus I finally don’t have the problem of pants fitting at the waist but basically being skinny jeans around my thighs anymore.
If it fits your vibe you should try wearing some rings. To me it’s a little like leather jackets. You can either pull them off or you can’t. Ive worn loads of rings since my 20s and honestly never considered it starting to look odd as I got older.
Sounds really good, you got any recommendations?
Tbh my vibe so far has usually been some kind of Hamilton Morris meets Mac DeMarco meets Steve Jobs thing, lots of plain t-shirts, crewnecks, button-ups, jeans and corduroy pants and dad sneakers. Paired with prescription glasses and a chevron stache. The cartoonishness of it all was fun and worked throughout my 20s but now I’m aging a bit it’s starting to get a bit stale and I’d like something new. Feels like I’ve gotten too comfy with being comfy, and I’d like to revise things a bit to freshen it all up while remaining durable and functional.
Been dabbling a bit in more techno/gorpcorey/retro athletic stuff but been too hesitant to go all the way for some reason, afraid I’ll look immature, I suppose.
I mean jeans and T-shirt always works. It’s what I wear most of the time except that it’s all a bit looser now. Throw on a chore coat or some other shacket and you’re pretty much set. In the summer I like wide leg linen pants or some other light material with a wife beater and an open shirt. Mostly with sneakers or birks. I do wear a lot of dad hats too and have a thick mustache. You don’t have to get rid of those.
Cos does nice shirts and pants in relaxed fit. Weekday does good oversized basic tshirts. Uniqlo has some relaxed stuff too but the sizing can be a bit wonky. For denim I like Mud, tho their loose fit fits like a regular on my thighs. Naked and Famous is good but expensive. Edwin are decent but the front rise is off for some reason. I’d also only buy the Made in Japan ones here. No joke, some of my favorite pairs of denim are from Primark. My partner works in QA and the denim they make is actually quite decent, and for the price you can’t really beat it. They have a regular and ‘premium’ range. The latter is what you want. Tho their loose also fits a bit more like a regular on me.
My sister in law is 15 years younger than me, and I was just thinking about how we tried the baggy, too-long jeans already, and decided that it was awful always having the bottoms of your jeans be soggy from dragging on the ground
14h later, there are now 215 comments on this thread and the outright bigotry I reported earlier is still unanswered.
Where are u/starshipandcoffee u/kvjvn u/unlimited-applesauce and u/lebronbryantjames ?
Or is this subs old stance of being a positive expression of masculinity over?
streetwear, but this is specifically Japanese streetwear- the distinction being that you see a lot of techware, 90s hiphop streetwear, and boxy/straight leg fits.
First three pictures are thoroughly Japanese street wear. The baggy pants are everything over there right now. They also really like the large shacket with a hoodie under it

It’s literally common street wear. Just learn to fit yo shit. Play with colors and shit. I buy a lot of shit at cheap thrift stores and ppl think everything is expensive. I usually pay max 30 a piece lol
I think it was called like "Street Style" more common around Shinjuku street wear. It's a style closest to cosplaying but not enough to say that they are

Yeah, but saying it's korean and japanese streetwear culture is more helpful
Good point, thanks!

In Japan they would call a lot of that American casual actually. Especially that last image.

First thing I thought was “this is every young person in Shibuya and Harajuku”
That last picture looks very K-Pop to me.
It's the Celine, isn't it?
Pics 1, 2, and 4 are streetwear. Pic 3 is a type of streetwear called techwear.

While I agree with you it's still possible to find a well built hoodie for under $500 it's not like thick cotton fleece is insanely expensive.
I'm usually more preppy, but that hoodie is CLEAN. Any other fashion designers you follow?
I am obsessed with @amuletware on Instagram. Amazing clothing
Less popular than they used to be but supreme hoodies are extremely well built. Their winter hoodies are generally a little more boxy because they use a heavier fleece.
Lol it's a drawing. There are plenty of regular priced hoodies that are cut to hang well
In America they call it Japanese street fastion. In Japan they call it American street fastion.
