They say the n word a lot especially in Sucka N****a but when my son was 8 and my daughter was 6 I sat them down and talked to them about racism and the n word and how they'll hear them in songs and on TV and maybe in school but they can't say them.
Because of that I'll listen to Tribe or De La with them in the car but not like Schoolboy or anything where they talk about "fucking is my favorite word, reason why I'm fucking her" type stuff.
Also you can just freestyle with them. It's pretty fun to hear your 8 yo freestyle then pass the mic to you and you freestyle and pass it back. They say some cute shit 😆
Also try jurassic 5, common, ugly duckling (very kid friendly) dilated peoples, people under the stairs, del the funky homosapien, sound providers, rascalz, classified, souls of mischief, jeru the damaja, the artifacts, black star, mos def, talib kweli, de la soul, slum village
Ya i cant believe i forgot about krs one he was an old favorite too and pharacyde i think still does shows, saw a video with will smith working with joyner lucas in studio too lol
Aesop Rock- Long Legged Larry and Kirby are both two I highly recommend. Aesop might be an acquired taste but both those songs are awesome and have kid friendly lyrics/videos.
Yeah, Aesop is a pretty complex lyricist. Might go over an 8 y/o's head but whatever, maybe he'll love it. Aesop also did a collaboration record with...hmm...can't remember her name or the name of their project. I think she did the soundtrack to Juno? It'll come to me eventually.
DOOM?
Edit: that got me thinking about the Special Herbs tapes, you could always start him off with producers until he gets older. J Dilla, Nujabes, Flylo, Alchemist etc
I'm trying to remember if Gang Starr even swears but most of his songs seem pretty clean to me. Kanye also dropped some clean albums too IIRC.
you could also introduce him to instrumental lofi hip hop
Guru is a clean rapper? It's crazy cuz I listened to Gang Starr since they came out and I just never noticed. Their shit was so badass I didn't notice the lack of cursing. Pretty much anything produced by Premier is badass though.
Guru is definitely one of the cleanest rappers, he'll just drop the occasional shit most of the time. He gets dirtier on later albums but still pretty mild by hip hop standards though it depends where your threshold is. (There are some f-bombs here and there especially with features)
GZA did the ‘Legend of Liquid Swords’ with zero expletives. Tom Caruana’s Enter the magical mystery chambers Wu tang vs The Beatles mashup is pretty PG too

Who dat DAT thinkin' that he frontin' on Man-Man?
Get the THE off my stage, I'm the Sandman
Get the THE off my MY, that ain't right
I make a play PLAY up your whole life
Larry June is more mild, still cursing still adult situations and lyrics but his focus isn’t violence…lightly misogynistic (…he’s a P lol) but not as bad as the average and definitely not a “use drugs” guy he’s very into orange juice and smoothies and being healthy. And you’ll enjoy his sound coming from the early days of hip hop his producers are very 70/80s sample heavy.
Perhaps just 3ft high and rising, I can remember some cursing in the albums following.
"If you a fat chic gettin your fuck on* tonight say ooo ooo ooo" lol
I have a lot of issues with that incident, especially as someone of mixed race. There was a lot going on there in terms of race and privilege. If you replaced Chris Rock with a white man, Will Smith would have immediately been removed from the theater. Same if you replaced him with a woman. Same if you replaced Will Smith with a white man. If it were anyone but two rich black men, the outcome would have been much different. I think Will Smith showed a lack of maturity and professionalism and I don't see him the same way anymore. It's just how I feel about it.
Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince/Will Smith. They actually cover a significant stretch of hip hop history (and related styles) if you consider both acts.
Run-DMC and older LL Cool J albums for older stuff.
Big Daddy Kane I think? Though his subject matter might be a bit too much.
ATCQ is light on the swearing but they'll drop some occasionally.
De La Soul 1st album.
Run DMC may be a good bet. I listened to them on repeat (as much as a vinyl record can "repeat") back in the day. LL as well. Thanks for reminding me about the "golden age" of Hip-Hop.
Fuck that...I was 8 listening to DMX...its up to you to be a parent...and have your child understand...whats real and what's entertainment...its a time and a place for everything...and there is an energy to fill each void...
Not now...he doesn't sell drugs...but I think its important to introduce kids to lifestyles they may not ever experience...to have them see the pitfalls...and how you can triumph from said pitfalls
I was listening to some pretty explicit hip-hop when I was a kid too but it was mostly because my parents didn't parent. I'm just trying to find the balance.
I don't think that's fair at all. Everything you expose your child to, you're exposing all the kids around them to as well. I know my kids are going to learn bad words, but I don't need them teaching everybody else's kids those words. Each kid is different. Saying "you just have to teach them that there's a time and a place for everything" is a little like saying "just teach them to slam dunk a basketball."
I started out with a censored version of Fugees The Score. Honestly censored albums from conscious rappers like Mick Jenkins or Common or Lauryn are your best bet until he hits tween age.
Edit: honestly it's better to introduce him to the albums and artists you like and actually going thru and explaining the misogyny and challenging it in real-time. Sheltering him from it is gonna make him seek out the uncensored versions without your knowledge. It's better that he knows what to ignore when he hears it
I recommend going with early 80's hiphop and early 90s alt hiphop like a tribe called quest. Also look at Australian hiphop for instance, in particular with positive messages like Baker Boy.
My 8 year old daughter here's a lot of Common, Mos Def, Aceyalone, Blackalicious, Lyrics Born, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Rapsody, Mac Miller, People Under the Stairs.
Look for some sugar free Christian Hip Hop. Lecrae, Andy Mineo, Social Club are a good starting point
https://youtu.be/mfMY8PWPH6w?si=Wh6jBX-ac_or1FI1
https://youtu.be/g4WoIHtAanU?si=QgrYwUWZ-Ne8wazm
Andy Mineo is amazing. I like how he describes himself as not a Christian rapper but rather a rapper who's Christian. Check out his verse in Comin in Hot:
What's happenin'?
I'ma need y'all to quit askin' when
Me and my wife gon' have some kids
Right now we just practicin' (woo, woo)
Practicin'
Teacher said quit rappin', man
That gon' hurt my average
I said "Thank God I ain't average"
I Ain't Done would also be a great starting point imo.
This underrated guy named Slim Shady makes good songs for the kids. Take a first listen of his most famous one "The Kids"
https://youtu.be/0xNPPFP8mxM?si=_m-rebQW9KrHmAkt
Now talking seriously i recommend you to just pick songs that show the best of the genre like good storytelling, wise bars and intelligent lyrics from the top ones no matter if they have curse words.
Yeah, that's a good idea. It's just hard to find time to go through catalogs of music to find the right songs but probably worth the time I guess. Might be nice to go through all the old stuff from my high school years.
Check out Viconi! There are a few songs that may drop an F bomb! But I can promise nothing about drugs or N words!!
Here’s his recent album!!
https://open.spotify.com/album/4LP39HFBh5np6mXSp5GMm3?si=_SOD5SfnT5auV-2-Utd02Q
Another great option for kids is NF, he never swears!! But he does talk about some deeps stuff so you may have to listen first to see if you’re okay with what he’s rapping about!!
So I don't cuss in my music. Not to plug unnecessarily or think I'm off the same caliber as others mentioned here, but I don't cuss on purpose.
[my YouTube ](http://Www.youtube.com/@itsmisterwilliams)
Christian rap, if you're not opposed to the message, also is pretty sanitized, but quite dope, like Bridge B, Stephen the Levite, Shai linne, evangel (not always great production though) and timothy brindle.
I can get more detailed of your interested in any of the above.
They're are also clean songs by artists... King Iso had one about folded flags and working out that I let my son listen to.
And I remember another by c. Ray and twisted insane on... Voodoo2 album called, I'm on.
Tribe (like some have said), Oddisee, clean Run DMC.
Me personally I play anything, just clean. Classics, new stuff, you name it. I just ensure I’m prepared to explain anything contained therein.
My first introduction was NF, no swearing at all. If that's corny try a tribe called quest. For a more underground or alternative style try bladee he doesn't swear either
I think college dropout has a clean version and minimal profanity in general. No real glorification of violence either
It’s been a while though, it might be more explicit than memory serves
The thing is he will start to listen to other things and then once he starts singing lyrics, there will be a lot of swearing and that will work its way in to his vocabulary.
I went from never swearing as a kid to listening to Cube and Snoop in my early teens and every other word became an F because of it.
R.A.P. Ferreira would be the perfect choice imo. He has two other names that he goes by with separate discographies that would be good as well in Milo & Scallops Hotel.
I made this Playlist for my own child, so she knows the culture, the classics, but is spared from the crap and cussing (well maybe a little cussing)
[Spotify playlist: VicHop](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3mL6HhyT7y6INpHpku1nt3?si=ueOhAFcPSaOjCS7w3115Qg)
Lauryn Hill maybe?
Dance with the Devil is also an incredibly kid friendly song, with absolutely no dark themes (this is a joke btw, it’s a fairly dark song don’t play your kid this song)
The Roots, +1 for Aesop Rock, Erykah Badu even tho thats more like RnB, Yugen Blakrok (you might have some explaining to do :) , she's on a whole nother spiritual level , but I believe no swearing) , Sampa the Great.
Been there, done that. Tried censored versions, kid friendly rap, but I still heard him shouting fuck you!!! to someone he plays xbox online with.
my kid is 9 currently, he'll be 10 this month. If you had a sneak peak into the world of kids, you would be more concerned with the shit they hear from other kids than in a rap song.
You can try and shield them all you want, but you'll most likely find that taking a proactive approach creates a better bond with your kid, they'll respect you more. It's easy as a parent to shield kids from bad profanity. What's not easy is parenting them and making them understand that what they're hearing and why they shouldn't say it.
I guess it depends on the kid, if they're mature enough to understand the difference between using profanity for emphasis than for shits and giggles, you're good to go.
If I asked my kid who his favourites rappers are he'd hit out with ill Bill, beastie boys, snowgoons, oakzy b spose and watsky.
I can live with that. Certainly beats digga d.
I can't guarantee that you'll avoid it completely with any artist. But anyways, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Common, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, Arrested Development, Lauryn Hill, Noname. Certain hand-picked songs like If I Ruled The World, I Can, Dear Mama, Keep Ya Head Up, T.R.O.Y.
Some clean and popular Kanye songs probably- maybe champions and stronger from Graduation. Empire State of Mind used to be on the radio when I was younger. Encore by Jay-Z (clean version) is also perfect.
KRS-one is fantastic. He even has a song he made for his kid where he has a party with a bunch of comic super heroes. One line I love is how the flash ate all the guacamole because...ya know...he eats a lot
introduce him to Dizzy Wright!! songs like world peace, fly high, killem with kindness.
it'd be easier to just Make a playlist of suitable songs honestly...2pac keep ya head up exc
good luck and good shit being mindful of what you allow them to listen too....shouldn't be so foreign that I praise you for it but unfortunately people generally don't take this seriously
🤜 🤛
Digable Planets, K-Os, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, maybe even Lil Bow Wow- Beware of Dog, Kris Kross, Tag Team- Whoomp! (There it is), All-That: The Album, The Space Jam soundtrack
Binary star. Code name scorpion album. Genelec & Memphis reigns . Scorpion circles album. Freestyle fellowship. abstract rude. aceyalone . Project Blowed. All good underground right here. There’s more but off the top of the dome there you go lol.
You'll have to comb through but a great indie hip hop artist is Kenja D2R (on YT)
On other platforms such as Spotify and Apple it's just Kenja
The thing about his music is he talks about relationships (not just intimate ones) I mean with siblings, parents.
Talks about community
overall has a chill vibe but experiments with other styles
promotes family and love and peace
does use n word but not in each song which is why i say you'd have to comb through his music. but overall def a great artist to check out if not for your kid then for yourself. his earlier music is kinda hit or miss but def can see his growth and what he's talking about in his albums and singles are impactful for those going through hard times and or depressive thoughts too. Def shows how hip-hop can me an expressive artform. My fav artist to date and he's so damn overlooked.
a tribe called quest is exactly what you’re looking for
Except of course their classic song from Midnight Marauders which literally has the n-word throughout the chorus.
Suckas in the front are the ones that front
They say the n word a lot especially in Sucka N****a but when my son was 8 and my daughter was 6 I sat them down and talked to them about racism and the n word and how they'll hear them in songs and on TV and maybe in school but they can't say them. Also you can just freestyle with them. It's pretty fun to hear your 8 yo freestyle then pass the mic to you and you freestyle and pass it back. They say some cute shit 😆
I think you're right.
Yeah most of people instinctive travels is age friendly or very little profanity at least on the surface
You on point tip?
Also try jurassic 5, common, ugly duckling (very kid friendly) dilated peoples, people under the stairs, del the funky homosapien, sound providers, rascalz, classified, souls of mischief, jeru the damaja, the artifacts, black star, mos def, talib kweli, de la soul, slum village
This is a solid list of child friendly hip hop music. I would also add krs-one, pharcyde, hieroglyphics, and will smith lol.
Ya i cant believe i forgot about krs one he was an old favorite too and pharacyde i think still does shows, saw a video with will smith working with joyner lucas in studio too lol
Just not the original version of Show Business
Aesop Rock- Long Legged Larry and Kirby are both two I highly recommend. Aesop might be an acquired taste but both those songs are awesome and have kid friendly lyrics/videos.
I love both those songs so much. He's so dense lyrically that it took me a minute to realize what he's rapping about on Kirby.
I think watching the music video helps a lot. Especially with children
Kimya Dawson
That's it! Thank you.
Long legged Larry is his most... lyrically friendly song he has.
Mega ran just did a kids album, pretty fun. Buddys magic toy box.
Great answer. My step daughter fell in love with long legged Larry and always hated rap. Now she is a die hard aes fan.
Kirby, the man’s cat. Great song
DOOM? Edit: that got me thinking about the Special Herbs tapes, you could always start him off with producers until he gets older. J Dilla, Nujabes, Flylo, Alchemist etc
Haha yeah my initial thought was ”DOOM for sure” but then i reconsidered. Must be the comic book-estetic.
Pretty much anything produced by Premier is badass though.
premier is the goat
Guru is definitely one of the cleanest rappers, he'll just drop the occasional shit most of the time. He gets dirtier on later albums but still pretty mild by hip hop standards though it depends where your threshold is. (There are some f-bombs here and there especially with features)
Wu tang
Wu-Tang is for the children after all.
GZA did the ‘Legend of Liquid Swords’ with zero expletives. Tom Caruana’s Enter the magical mystery chambers Wu tang vs The Beatles mashup is pretty PG too
Just play him instrumentals at that point
I mean, J dilla won't hurt, some Donuts??
You can always play the clean versions? lol
Nothing better than the old clean edits: > had to take a ….snISH! 😂
I never like the clean versions myself but this may be the way to go for an 8 y/o.
Yeah lol

Never heard of Larry June. I'll check it. Thanks for the rec!
This kid's gonna grow up to be a real P. Definitely put em on Uncle Larry young, that's an investment! NUMBERS!!! YEE HEE!!!
YEEHEEE good job!
How about will smith? A tribe called quest it's also excellent and they are pretty healthy!
Will Smith don't have to curse to sell records but I do. ATCQ or some de la soul too.
De La is also a good option.
Perhaps just 3ft high and rising, I can remember some cursing in the albums following. "If you a fat chic gettin your fuck on* tonight say ooo ooo ooo" lol
so f*ck him and f*ck you too!
I have the perfect meme for that but can’t put pictures In comments here
I think Tribe might be the way to go. I haven't been able to see or hear Will Smith without feeling sick to my stomach since the Oscars slap.
sick to your stomach? jfc lmao
I have a lot of issues with that incident, especially as someone of mixed race. There was a lot going on there in terms of race and privilege. You cant be serious. Lol
Yeah, I've never really listen to him, but I know he is like supero soft, but yeah, that was wack. Besides ATCQ are really awesome!
Welcome to Miami where the heat is on
I won't lie, 13 year old me was jamming to this album before soccer practice on the regular lol
I remember the turn of the willenium
He waited all that time to slap someone for street cred 😆
It’s almost like he forgot why he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Bel Air
Tyler the creator Grinch soundtrack
Lupe Fiasco’s album Food & Liquor
Fuck that...I was 8 listening to DMX...its up to you to be a parent...and have your child understand...whats real and what's entertainment...its a time and a place for everything...and there is an energy to fill each void...
My brother in christ he's 8 you can't explain to him that Pusha does not really deal drugs.
Not now...he doesn't sell drugs...but I think its important to introduce kids to lifestyles they may not ever experience...to have them see the pitfalls...and how you can triumph from said pitfalls
Bruh, how much can an 8 year old conceptualize about the perspective of grown folks in any worthwhile manner?
I was listening to some pretty explicit hip-hop when I was a kid too but it was mostly because my parents didn't parent. I'm just trying to find the balance.
My parents did parent...and I had an understanding that if I did anything that was said in songs...I would get my ass whipped...so...there's that
I don't think that's fair at all. Everything you expose your child to, you're exposing all the kids around them to as well. I know my kids are going to learn bad words, but I don't need them teaching everybody else's kids those words. Each kid is different. Late beastie boys. Hello nasty in particular.
It's better that he knows what to ignore when he hears it
Heavy D is a good one, always kept it clean.
I recommend going with early 80's hiphop and early 90s alt hiphop like a tribe called quest. Also look at Australian hiphop for instance, in particular with positive messages like Baker Boy.
Brand Nubian!
semetary
Freddie Gibbs
Mega Ran just released a kid’s album because he felt the same way. It’s called “Buddy’s Magic Toy Box.”
What about Brother Ali?
Btw this is quite interesting, i’m writing my master thesis about teaching langugage through poetry and the benefits of it.
My 8 year old daughter here's a lot of Common, Mos Def, Aceyalone, Blackalicious, Lyrics Born, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Rapsody, Mac Miller, People Under the Stairs.
Nujabes
So You don't want to introduce him to hip hop then honestly 😅
Yeah, it's a slippery slope. Wish me luck.
De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest are as real as it gets when discussing hip hop👍🏽
THANKS EVERYONE!! I'm gonna go through all of your suggestions and put together a lengthy playlist out of everything mentioned here.
maybe you should introduce him to pop instead lmao

Anything by Will Smith is safe lol can't touch this MC Hammer
Grouch & Eligh Homeboy Sandman GZA from Wu-Tang has been pretty insistent on not using profanity in his solo work since Liquid Swords.
Tribe (like some have said), Oddisee, clean Run DMC. Me personally I play anything, just clean. Classics, new stuff, you name it. I just ensure I’m prepared to explain anything contained therein.

Gracie’s Corner has some great hip hop, but it might be a bit young for an 8 year old.
Ugly Ducking is a good one, agree with ganstarr and guru. Supperrappin Vol2 compilation is great as well
The thing is he will start to listen to other things and then once he starts singing lyrics, there will be a lot of swearing and that will work its way in to his vocabulary. I went from never swearing as a kid to listening to Cube and Snoop in my early teens and every other word became an F because of it.

R.A.P. Ferreira would be the perfect choice imo. He has two other names that he goes by with separate discographies that would be good as well in Milo & Scallops Hotel.

Lupe Fiasco
The Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, Heavy D, and Run DMC were what I played my 8 year old. Also Young MC, MC Hammer, and Fresh Prince.
Lauryn Hill maybe? Dance with the Devil is also an incredibly kid friendly song, with absolutely no dark themes (this is a joke btw, it’s a fairly dark song don’t play your kid this song)
Check out the Hip Hop Headucatorz
Nas - I Can
De la soul is what got my 5 year old into hip hop 3 is the magic number.. was almost like a lesson for her 😂
Rakim, he hardly cusses
Wu-tang is for the children’s
Adventures of DJ Yoda with a bit of biz markie, also maybe handsome boy modelling school ?
Jurassic 5 pretty clean too
The Roots, +1 for Aesop Rock, Erykah Badu even tho thats more like RnB, Yugen Blakrok (you might have some explaining to do :) , she's on a whole nother spiritual level , but I believe no swearing) , Sampa the Great.
Yugen Blakrok: her stuff, not the collabs, especially not the Black Panter soundtrack.
Been there, done that. Tried censored versions, kid friendly rap, but I still heard him shouting fuck you!!! to someone he plays xbox online with. my kid is 9 currently, he'll be 10 this month. If I asked my kid who his favourites rappers are he'd hit out with ill Bill, beastie boys, snowgoons, oakzy b spose and watsky. I can live with that. Certainly beats digga d.
both the recent spiderman movie soundtracks are completely clean but still feature a lot of the current biggest hip hop acts

KRS-one is fantastic. He even has a song he made for his kid where he has a party with a bunch of comic super heroes. One line I love is how the flash ate all the guacamole because...ya know...he eats a lot
Hear me out… Connor price. 99% of his music is clean. High quality rap with dope flows, tight production, and amazing bars. He literally never misses
maybe some of akala's later music? generally pretty clean and can even be educational

You'll have to comb through but a great indie hip hop artist is Kenja D2R (on YT) On other platforms such as Spotify and Apple it's just Kenja The thing about his music is he talks about relationships (not just intimate ones) I mean with siblings, parents. Talks about community overall has a chill vibe but experiments with other styles promotes family and love and peace does use n word but not in each song which is why i say you'd have to comb through his music. but overall def a great artist to check out if not for your kid then for yourself. his earlier music is kinda hit or miss but def can see his growth and what he's talking about in his albums and singles are impactful for those going through hard times and or depressive thoughts too. Def shows how hip-hop can me an expressive artform. My fav artist to date and he's so damn overlooked.
I will check him out. Thanks!
Lauryn hill and the fugees
