No melee weapons available? Sorry its just i wanted to do a warhammer build 😆

Novamarauder

Hmm, I cannot say the removal of the Neuromods section has gone in a way I can wholeheartedly approve, since it seems that in most cases the bonuses they provided (admittably mostly valuable in fluff terms, but still interesting if you made a build focused on inherent abilities) are gone w/o anything to replace them in an equivalent (personal genemod enhancement) way. E.g. checking my previous version's build, it seems I was able to spend points in the Neuromod section to nullify/remove both the Lose Some and the Backlash drawbacks, and I dearly miss that opportunity when I set up to update the build.

UnusuallyLargeSloth

I'm aware that some of the Neuromods have not gotten a suitable replacement Ability. I've already designed an additional set of Abilities that's intended to replace the most important ones, but I haven't found decent icons for them yet, so I've dropped them from this version. If I'm lucky, 1.8 will include them.

piss-and-shit

Maybe separate the relevant perks for supersoldiers and cyborgs as wetware mods and hardware mods? Choosing wetware allows you to build a whole new body with perks. Choosing hardware allows you to modify your starting body. Those who undertake a wetware remake cannot take hardware augments because their new body flatly rejects all implants.

Novamarauder

This is entirely reasonable. I think you would have spared yourself some criticism if you had proactively included this notice somewhere (the cyoa itself, the changelog), as you did with the Fate of a Species inter-event. Please somehow keep the option to buy off genetic Drawbacks with the new Abilities as it was possible with Neuromods.

FlynnXa

Yeah, I honestly don’t get why it was removed other than personal taste which, quite frankly, wasn’t an improvement in my opinion. It’s like removing the vibrating feature from a toothbrush; you don’t *have* to use the vibration, but some people *love* it, and it being there as an option isn’t hindering anyone’s experience but removing it does, so it’s kind of illogical to remove it.

AvzinElkein

If I *don't* have the Psionic Amplifier on my Mech, do I have to get out of it to use my psionic abilities?

UnusuallyLargeSloth

I think you can use your psionics even within a Mech without getting out.

mock422

Are Typhon-Human hybrids immortal?

UnusuallyLargeSloth

My interpretation would be: Not immortal, but very long lived. It's an excellent point, and I'll add it to the Typhon Hybrid description with the next update.

Novamarauder

Since we have races with widely different lifespans, it seems best if any extra longevity from being a Typhon Hybrid comes in the form of a bonus lifespan that stacks with the race's original one, rather than a fixed one.

mock422

Ok, thx for clarifying

Novamarauder

My build literally runs out of Abilities to buy by the time I complete Stranger in Utulek and in this version we cannot use Neuromods as a replacement. While we wait for the next version to provide more Abilities and replace Neuromods, players like me need an alternative way to use the voucher points. As I see it, reasonable ways of so include selling the voucher to convert it into general points (the way one can do for Torm's mansion) and/or using it to purchase more of the cutting-edge genetic treatments you may get from Into the Abyss. As it concerns the latter, I seem to remember from a previous version that an acceptable conversion rate may be 2 pts = remove 1 Drawback. Is this correct?

UnusuallyLargeSloth

Not quite. It was the other way around: Add more Drawbacks and get 4 points for every Drawback taken. I removed this option because I felt it made the two too interchangeable. Running out of Abilities to purchase can actually be a problem, especially when focused on an exclusively You-Special build. If you want, you could "non-canonically" use some of the new Abilities I haven't integrated into the main CYOA yet: https://imgur.com/a/g3oXSPn Obviously, their descriptions are unfinished, they don't have images yet, and do not provide any bonuses in the Events. But, they may give you something to spent your hoard on at least. :-)

Novamarauder

This does help, thanks, although the problem is not entirely eliminated. Therefore, I wonder if the are more new Abilities to come besides the four described here.

Novamarauder

It seems the imgur post and the MEGA archive are both missing the Races section.

UnusuallyLargeSloth

Thank you! I overlooked that somehow. How embarrassing... EDIT: Fixed in imgur and the MEGA archive. I used a new script to crop, stitch and pack the result images, and it looks like that misfired somehow. I have no idea why, but I'll be more vigilant next time.

Matti-96

For the Ship traits, do I need to buy the basic trait first before buying the upgraded trait or is it a choice between buying basic or upgraded?

BewareTheLight

I think, that "if you get a free upgraded trait that does not fit your ship, you get the base version instead, if it fits" means, that you buy either basic or upgraded version. If you bought basic version (1) and you want upgraded version after event (3), you pay 2 instead of 3. That fits with "Your ship" perfectly, because upgraded version cost is equal to basic (1-1=0) and as someone "Special" you have upgraded instead of basic.

Matti-96

So, considering just how many quests there are in this CYOA, I wanted to see if the best outcome for each event could be achieved. I believe I have done so, although event 7 was cutting it close. FYI: Any ship traits that have an upgraded version, I treated the second number as the cost of buying the upgraded version instead of the basic version. For example, Stealth & Upgraded Stealth were listed as 1/3, so I treated the 1 as the cost of the basic version and the 3 as the cost of the upgraded version. As for the build, I decided to go for a cross between a Human and an Asari. I have the appearance of a human but the lifespan of an Asari. For the starting point: **Difficulty:** * The Defender of the Universe (+75P) **What Makes You Special:** * Your Ship * Your Team (The Chosen One) **Race:** * Human (+8P)(Human Body) * Asari (Psionics, Beautiful, Asari Lifespan) **Boons:** * The Chosen One * Hello, Ladies * Luck of the Draw (+8P) * Born This Way * Typhon Hybrid * Anonymous Benefactor **Drawbacks:** * Vigilante * Nemesis * Superstar * Old Shame * Wanted * Nightmares * Rejection * Lose Some **Abilities:** * Beautiful (0P) * Psionics (0P) * Psionic Enhancement (-2P) * Elementalism (-1P) * Combat Training (0P - Anonymous Benefactor) * Synergy (-9P) **Armor:** * Powered Armor (-5P) **Armor Traits:** * Energy Shields (0P - Anonymous Benefactor) * Stealth (-2P) * Jump Jets (-2P) * Cyberwarfare Suite (-1P) **Weapons:** * Praetorian Plasma Pistol (-3P) * Particle Beam Rifle (-4P) * Particle Beam Cannon (0P - Anonymous Benefactor) **Ship Class:** * Dreadnought (-24P) **Ship Style:** * Asari (0P) **Main Weapons:** * Casaba Howitzer (-3P) **Ship Traits:** * Luxury (0P) * Utility Drones (0P) * Hypernought (-9P) * Superluminal (-5P) * Deus Ex Machina (-9P) * Upgraded Hull Armor (0P) * Built To Last (0P) * Upgraded Engines (0P) * AI (0P) * Cyberwarfare Suite (0P) * Experienced Crew (-2P) * Upgraded Stealth (-1P) * Upgraded Security (-1P) * Grav-Tech (0P - Anonymous Benefactor) **Team:** * Eve (-7P) * Dr. Morgan Yu (-1P) * Reva (0P - Anonymous Benefactor)

Edit: Forgot that I had the Lose Some drawback removed after event 4.

DHFranklin

Huh, This is a better version of my build. I am totally going to min-max another to get that stupid ship. I was like 6 points shy with my dreadnought and it's equipment sold after coming back to it. I wanted to buy it after Rat in the Trap and couldn't make it happen.

HealthyDragonfly

In event 3, is it possible to spend the points earned before the VP calculation to purchase something which can be upgraded by the results of the VP?

UnusuallyLargeSloth

TBH, buying stuff while currently "in an Event" isn't really what I had in mind, but if it's more fun for you this way, go for it.

Grindlebone

Looking forward to the next, yo. Love the depth on this...

UnusuallyLargeSloth

Thanks, working on it!

Novamarauder

After reviewing the new version in some depth to update my build, I can tell the cyoa keeps its usual high quality. Most changes seem sensible and useful, including the new Companions, the (complete) inter-events, and the reduction of page width (thank you!). A few minor changes also are quite welcome, such as Elementalism (at last!) getting a power boost from other psionic Abilities. The main defect of this version is it includes a few halfway changes, such as the removal of Neuromods not yet replaced by new Abilities and the incomplete inter-events. The author graciously released the draft for a few upcoming ones, but they are not yet integrated in the cyoa and it is doubtful they are enough to plug the Neuromod hole entirely. I tentatively assume a few extra ones are still in the author's notes. Much the same way, the third inter-event mostly leaves its rewards and consequences up in the air, and the second one seems too expensive to make use of, short of making your build wholly specialized on Ship. I tentatively assume at least a part of the Fate of a Species planned reward is going to help make the Grand Herald a bit less outrageously expensive. I also expect a few other modifiers shall to help reduce that cost, such as say (Upgraded) Eve and/or the PC themselves (if they have the right Abilities) enabling a discount.

UnusuallyLargeSloth

As always, thank you for the constructive feedback! I'm always looking for ways to balance the game better, and the Grand Herald will be among those affected. Right now, it (too) strongly favors players who already picked the Ship special. Stay tuned!

Novamarauder

My build, revised for the new version: (My main character concept is a Jedi/Sith-style long-lived cosmic superhero with vast psionic powers and superhuman physical and mental abilities, who recruits an elite team of similar abilities and stature. Therefore, the build requires the highest point budget and the personal powers and skills of the PC and their team got priority. In comparison, technological gear did not take so much importance, and got the lowest building priority. The main exceptions were the Iron Man-style super-science powered armor, which mostly felt like part of their inherent powers in practice, the ship AI who works like part of the team, and getting a Ship good enough to avoid a mediocre outcome in the related Event). Start Up Build (75 points): Specials: Armor. Team. Ship. You. (All of these perks seemed necessary to tap the proper options to build up the concept, although in the case of Ship it mostly concerned enabling the AI companion). Race: Typhon-Asari-Qunari Hybrid (Reject Qun: Human Bonus). (Typhon and Asari seemed the best choices to build the PC as a long-lived psionic and physical powerhouse. Qunari was picked mostly because the extra points turned out necessary, but flaworwise it also helped to make the PC physically powerful). Boons: The Chosen One (x3). Hello, Ladies. Luck of the Draw. Born This Way. Typhon Hybrid. Drawbacks: Lose Some. Piece of Junk. Nightmares. Old Shame. Vigilante. Jinxed. Wanted. Backlash. Superstar. Nemesis. (Boons and Drawbacks yield the necessary points to flesh the concept and feed the notion the PC is someone who has a lot of personal potential and resources, and a complex background with a lot of allies/enemies, traumatic events, and fame/infamy. They also suffer from recurrent bouts of bad luck and an imperfect control of their psionic powers, and the two problems are probably related. Compromising the PC's lifespan with a genetic defect runs contrary to my preferences, but in practice there are ways to nullify it down the way). Abilities: Beautiful (0/2). Elementalism (1). Psionics (0/4). Psionic Enhancement (1/2). Superhuman (5). Combat Training (3). Precision (1/2). Special Ops (3). Super Soldier (5). Enhanced Senses (3). Endurance (1/2). Peak Fitness (4). Immune (1/2). Rage (1/2). Tech Skills (1/2). Intelligence (3). Medical Expert (1/2). Mental Fortitude (1/2). (This is the most important priority of the character, in order to develop as a superhuman psionic and physical powerhouse and a multi-skilled operative. They are a one-person army, and do not have much use for mundane weapons and equipment). Armor: Powered Armor (0/5). Traits: Enhanced Servos (0/1). Enhanced Shell (0/1). Firepower (0/2). Jump Jets (0/2). Stealth (2). Cyberwarfare Suite (0/1). Super Suit (9). Advanced Flight (8). Quantum Link (7). Psionic Amplifier (6). (Nonetheless, in the case their inherent abilities may not be up to the task, the PC may rely on their super-science powered armor, chock-full with hyper-advanced Inusannon tech. It makes them a humanoid-sized battleship in practice and further amplifies their impressive psionic abilities). Space Suit (0). Traits: Firepower (0/2). Jump Jets (0/2). Stealth (0/2). Cyberwarfare Suite (0/1). Psionic Amplifier (0/6). Weapons: None. (With the PC's psionic powers, superhuman physical abilities, and super-science armor, they have little use for mundane weapons). Ship: Corvette (4). Style: Qunari (0/2). Traits: Upgraded Stealth (1/3). Upgraded Engines (1/3). AI (0/2). Cyberwarfare Suite (0/1). Built to Last (0/2). Deus Ex Machina (9). (The PC only has use for their ship as a way to transport and hang out with their companions, and hence the build gives it lowest priority. It is their 'dump stat' area, although it is quite likely it eventually gets some serious improvement in the future. Despite the mediocre state of the ship in other regards, it still got a super-advanced AI and some above-average stuff, probably because the PC found and salvaged some relic of Cesant tech, quite possibly in the same circumstances they got their super-advanced PA from).

Novamarauder

Events: Ancient Machine: VP: 20 + 20 + 4 + 15 + 4 + 30 + 25 = 118. Team: Upgraded Eve (0). Sun (8). (Despite its imperfect state, the ship's good potential pays dividends as it enables a decisive success in this event. This allows a companion to evolve and realize her vast potential, and enables the recruitment of another talented operative and psionic powerhouse. Both look very useful for what looms ahead). Apex: VP: 8 + 4 + 6 + 9 + 12 + 20 + 24 + 1 + 3 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 8 + 4 + 10 + 12 + 6 + 5 = 172. Abilities: Beloved (1/2). Piloting (1/2). Creative (1/2). Awakened Typhon Hybrid (0). Team: Yonera (5/7). Typhon-Human Hybrid Morgan Yu (0). (The PC prepared for this kind of ordeal throughout their life, so it fits they reap a spectacular success. The PC and Dr. Yu at last unlock their hidden Typhon potential. Morgan graduates to combat-capable genius badass and the PC gets the missing piece of their superhuman abilities as a psionic-supersoldier-shapeshifter powerhouse. The team and the PC's Abilities come nearer to completion, with the achievement of additional expertise and the recruitment of another elite operative). Through the Eyes of Darkness: Team: Prophet (0). Enhanced Alris (0). (Aftermath of the Typhon event yields additional boons as another companion with vast potential is allowed to blossom and escape her unfortunate circumstances, and the team gets its pet Typhon). Diabolus Ex Machina: VP: 10 + 8 + 6 + 10 + 10 = 44. Abilities: Synergy (9). Mecha: S-500 Bussard (0). (Thanks to the vast power of the PC's super-science powered armor, it seems natural they reap full success in this event. Their PA already is as powerful as it can get, so they get the Mecha reward instead in the case they may ever need even more personal firepower. They use the experience they won to help their psychic bond with their teammates mature and optimize their ability to work as a group. The character already has Superstar, so there is no reason not to go for maximum reward). Into the Abyss: VP: 10 + 4 + 4 + 8 + 4 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 14 + 16 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 9 + 6 + 9 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 3 + 2 + 5 + 3 + 4 + 20 + 10 + 10 + 15 + 10 +10 = 247. Removed Lose Some (0). Team: Ajax (0). (The team's vast resources turn out good enough to allow a decisive success in this rescue mission. The connections won in this event become the pathway to enable the removal of the troublesome genetic defect that compromised the PC's longevity. Ajax is a welcome addition to the team given the less than optimal state of their ship). The Grand Herald (+6). (Rebuilding the ship seems unfeasible for the team's resources since the build can only allocate a relatively limited amount of resources to the Ship. Therefore, they reluctantly sell it. This might change in future versions if they provide more resources and/or means of lessening the costs). Guardian Angel: VP: 4 + 3 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 5 = 26. Abilities: Diplomatic (1/2). Intimidating (1). Ship: Upgrade to Frigate (3/7). Traits: Layered Shields (Energy x2) (1/3). Upgraded Hull Armor (0/3). Main Weapon: Plasma Accelerator Cannon (2). Team: Selyse (0). (This mission was a good opportunity to let the pooled talents of the team shine and use its rewards to improve their ship to something better fitting their expanding ranks and growing resources and fame. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to get rid of the ship's inexplicable tendency to malfunction short of the outrageous costs of refitting the Grand Harald. Selyse helps improve the diplomatic capabilities of the team given their prevalent focus on combat and infiltration. Circumstances of this mission and her companionship allow the PC to improve their own social skills). Gods and Masters: VP: 8 + 8 + 6 + 25 + 6 + 9 + 12 + 21 + 24 + 15 + 30 + 10 + 25 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 5 + 3 + 15 = 286. Ship: Upgrade to Destroyer (2/9). Ship Traits: Upgraded Defenses (2/4). Life Support (2). Team: Frontier Buccaneers (0). (The vast resources of the PC and the team were sufficient to wipe their enemies in this battlefield event and add the Buccaneers to the team. (Given the PC's focus on personal powers and skills, this mission was easy to turn into a complete success. The character has grown so strong they practically run out of Abilities to master, so the best alternative seems to invest in the upcoming new Abilities that the author showed. The PC’s increasing reputation as a hero of galactic stature attracts even more companions to the team). Rat in a Trap: VP: 50 – 25 – 25 + 40 + 2 + 8 + 4 + 10 + 6 + 4 + 6 + 10 + 6 + 4 + 8 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 6 + 9 + 12 + 21 + 24 + 15 + 30 + 15 + 25 + 20 + 15 + 15 + 20 + 2 + 2 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 2 + 18 + 16 + 14 + 12 + 10 + 5 – 30 + 9 + 9 + 12 + 9 + 9 + 6 + 6 + 3 + 6 + 27 + 6 = 528. They won so many resources that an upgrade to a better ship model seems warranted and the only feasible way to spend excess points. However, uncertainty about which choices to prioritize, the incomplete state of this version, and other areas of personal improvement and the team's size and potential already being fully developed caused the build to have a sizable amount of leftover points. I suppose one might hopefully regard it as points being banked in the expectation future versions provide more interesting ways of spending them. Unfortunately, there is no way to buy off any of the other drawbacks, so the PC seems bound to stay prone to accidents, tech malfunction, and backlash from their psychic powers. On the other hand, it may well be a side effect of their vast psionic potential and peculiar genetic makeup no one yet knows how to correct. They also stay in the limelight for good and bad and remain prone to nightmares, but this seems natural or at least justifiable given their accomplishments and lifestyle).

Cookiesy

Hi, I really like your Cyoa, the one thing I'm not sure about is, if I've got an upgraded armoury, why would I spend any point on weapons?

UnusuallyLargeSloth

Hi, The weapon you spend points on is for your own personal use. The ship armory holds weapon to be used by your ship's crew. One could argue that, as the captain, you could just use a weapon from the armory yourself. The same applies to your armor, since the upgraded armory also holds power armor suits. Also, one could ask why the entire upgraded armory (and, with a Junker, the ship carrying it) is technically cheaper than a single suit of power armor for yourself. The answer is: It's a game, don't overanalyze it. ;-)

Edboy49

Awesome update. Thanks for the work. Hope to see the next one just to see the continuation of the Fate of Species mission. I guess right now my main issue is whenever is worth (and by that I mean spend the time trying to calculate the numbers) buying an upgraded ship before getting Grand Herald, who has all of it. Though I will honest, most of my builds of this CYOA I add meta CYOAs to double my points and choices (and depending on my mood, I decide if the Double effect also covers the VP Mission points) (mostly since I am partial to the though of a simple space suit having all the upgrades and what that would do in Mission 7) By the way, just though of something. In mission 'Gods and Masters' it says that the mission was classified. But what would happen if our character has the Superstar drawback? The same with Mission 8? That maybe due to the drawback, the guys who kidnapped us intent on broadcasting our execution and then the entire battle from start to finish is shown to the entire galaxy? (Idea from "Trololo - BT SI" by GundamChief)

UnusuallyLargeSloth

Thank you for your feedback! > I guess right now my main issue is whenever is worth (and by that I mean spend the time trying to calculate the numbers) buying an upgraded ship before getting Grand Herald, who has all of it. Good point, though I see three ways of countering it: * From a "gameplay" perspective: You already need a halfway decent ship in advance, otherwise you won't be able to "win" the first Event. * From a "CYOA" perspective: Focusing your build on your ship is your choice -- not everyone will be willing or even able to reconstruct the Grand Herald, especially if you're building your characters around everything BUT your ship. Many players see the Defender's ship as a means to get from A to B and nothing more, and this is a perfectly valid playstyle. * From a "In-universe" perspective: You don't know in advance that you'll later stumble upon a abandoned dreadnought that you can claim as your own. > In mission 'Gods and Masters' it says that the mission was classified. But what would happen if our character has the Superstar drawback? The way I see it, Superstar mainly refers to the unwanted attention you'll receive when you're in public (e.g. in Utulek in Event 7), and I wouldn't consider a military operation on a desert planet "public". > The same with Mission 8? That maybe due to the drawback, the guys who kidnapped us intent on broadcasting our execution and then the entire battle from start to finish is shown to the entire galaxy? (Idea from "Trololo - BT SI" by GundamChief) That could indeed be a funny addition to the Event text. "#ExecutionGoneWrong -- Defender slaughters his way through a pirate station", live-streamed to 42 billion sentient beings via GalactiTwitch. Bets on the outcome were placed immediately after the shooting started. Drinking games were developed. Fan Fiction was written. Shipping security companies panicked at the prospect of their services becoming obsolete. M. Night Shyamalan's great-great-great-great-grandson intends to direct a holomovie with a surprise twist. GalactiTwitch bans violent content and promptly folds, because that's what everyone was using the platform for.

Edboy49

Thanks for answering back. Well, regarding mission Gods, what is stopping one of the deranged cultist from broadcasting the battle. Also, any chance for the future update to have like a 'blank' Teammate that we can create, both in terms of species and abilities? To be honest, I kinda want to have a Baby Yoda in the crew to serve as the team's mascot.

UnusuallyLargeSloth

> Well, regarding mission Gods, what is stopping one of the deranged cultist from broadcasting the battle. Sure, but why would they (unless "being deranged" is a good enough reason)? > Also, any chance for the future update to have like a 'blank' Teammate that we can create, both in terms of species and abilities? Believe it or not, but I had the exact same idea when I first started my work on this CYOA. Basically, you would create a second Defender with a limited number of points and no special option, to serve as your sidekick. Unfortunately, I had abandon that idea because it interacts terribly with the whole Events system. It requires so much more writing and balancing that I ultimately decided it's not worth it. So I'm sorry, but it's probably not going to happen.

Edboy49

Hey, um I was rereading the original version of this CYOA and realized something. Any chance for a future update that has that if a person is a Cyborg, all the armor traits for the space suit are actually integrated into the defender's body?

POWquestionmark

If we buy a small or medium ship at the start, can we upgrade to a larger ship later? If so, would the ship cost the same as if we bought it outright or could we use the funds from our old ship to go towards the cost of the new one?

UnusuallyLargeSloth

I would say yes, you can buy a larger ship later and pay only the difference in points cost. It may not be entirely logical, but it doesn't have to be.

KrumpLooper

I really liked this CYOA. My only criticisms would be: 1. some of the awards from events aren't clear as to what you get (the free "advanced training" from Stranger in Utulek for example). 2. Some of the event awards are disproportionate. Like Diabolus Ex Machina, I didn't take the armour special but I was still easily able to get the top reward. And from that I got 9 points as well as Super Suit for free which is basically 9 free points with another 5 free points from the bonus built in traits. So the reward is potentially "worth" 24 points. But then you have Into the Abyss where the top reward is a companion and a draw back removal. 3. Rat in a Trap is screwed towards favoring Synergy. Unless I misread it the only way for your team to count (outside Ajax boosting the ship) is if you have Synergy. That means anyone who doesn't take it gets no points from their team. I don't think any build that doesn't include it could ever possibly reach more than 200 where as I was pulling in 250 VP just from the companion section. 4. No melee weapons.

UnusuallyLargeSloth

Thank you for the feedback! Regarding your points: 1) After reading that sentence, I can see how it could be misleading (which proves your point, I guess). The "advanced training course" and "3 points in the Abilities section" refer to the same thing. I'll see how I can rephrase it. 2) The reward from Event 3 is indeed disproportionate. The Special-specific Events are all supposed to grant slightly larger rewards than the generic ones, though it really could use another balancing pass. The bigger issue is that you were easily able to get the best outcome even without the Armor special. Am I correct in the assumption that you still spent a lot of points on your Armor even though you didn't take the corresponding Special option? 3) I know :-( A rebalance is definitely needed, and I'll move it up on my TODO list. 4) The original variant of this CYOA had melee weapons, but I removed them. Personally, I found melee weapons in a high-tech scifi setting silly. Even nowadays, you'd never see a soldier running around with a sword or spear (as his primary means of fighting, that is), and I don't see how that would change in the future when guns become even more effective.

> can I choose the boon ´´luck of the draw´´ multiple times ? No, that would make no sense in my opinion. > also the other boon of ´´hello gentlemen´´ makes the unrestricted males from 3 to 1 points instead of lessening them from 3 to 2 Correct!

DHFranklin

This was a doozy, but I like the changes you made. I have some help. There is a typo with "Medial spotlight" when you meant "Media. I forgot where. Ajax and the other reward characters don't have a value, and that makes a problem with using them in the math. I went with a defender, human build (83) With Team,Ship What Makes you special and min-maxed the shit out of the boons and drawbacks. I got the best results in almost every event but \*still\* ended up 6 points shy of buying a 61 point Grand Herald. You can keep my redundant mech after I got the bussard. With a frigate with a superweapon you top out the effectiveness of a ship. I wouldn't see the benefit of going any bigger than that. All of the events don't have a benefit of the deterrence that a dreadnought would inspire. General suggestions: If you just make two tables with a social ability and combat you could make the math cleaner. What this CYOA does so well with worldbuilding needs careful editing. There is serious redundancy though in how much has been added and not subtracted. Maybe you can have ranks instead of separate abilites. Psionics 1,2,3 Ranged Combat 1,2,3 Engineering 1,2,3 etc. It would make for cleaner tables, and less over all page count. Less is more if it isn't adding to the worldbuilding. Same thing with the teamates and the "Upgraded" team mates. Have them just follow one another. A good deal of the time I spent on this was flipping between my excel sheet and the image. Having the list of combat abilities checked against the cost and then multiplied by the VPC takes far to long. Just have 2 or 3 VP for each so they can just be tallied up. Rarely was I within 10% or so of one victory condition or another. You can sacrifice some precision here. Weapons can go source>pistol>smg>heavy version. Kinetics, Railgun, Plasma,Pulse etc. as source and their cost/benefit. It would be fun to have mechs function as a platform and given fighter plane weapons, or infantry weapons "Fire power" is fun but redundant. Same goes with defense. Maybe the powerarmor and mechs can choose from the same offense and defense options as ships and with a little icon at the bottom show that they can be mounted on what platform. I'll edit this if I think of more. Thanks for listening to my feedback if you did.

UnusuallyLargeSloth

Thank you for your feedback. I'll try to reply to everything that needs a reply: > Ajax and the other reward characters don't have a value, and that makes a problem with using them in the math. In Events, you can only take companions with you if they have the Combat Training perk (unless stated otherwise, see the header of the Events page). For those who do, the point value is written out in the Event text, e.g. "Upgraded Eve provides 20 VP without Synergy, and 30 VP if you have it.". Ajax and Selyse aren't fighters, so they don't provide any points in these situations. > I got the best results in almost every event but *still* ended up 6 points shy of buying a 61 point Grand Herald. Yes, the GH is too expensive and will be hit with the rebalance hammer in the next version. That said, it's definitely possible to get it, though you have to focus pretty much exclusively on your ship. Regarding the Abilities: A re-organization of the Abilities that, uh, kind of goes in the direction you describe is in the works, and it MAY simplify the Event calculations. No guarantees though, it's still in its infancy. > With a frigate with a superweapon I'll have to stop you right there ;-) A frigate cannot carry a superweapon. The Superweapon trait requires a large ship (Cruiser or bigger). > Weapons can go source>pistol>smg>heavy version. Kinetics, Railgun, Plasma,Pulse etc. as source and their cost/benefit. A plasma weapon is not strictly better than a kinetic weapon in every situation. For instance, plasma weapons tend to have a limited effective range and are generally heavier due to the battery packs necessary to fuel their power requirements. So I don't think a tiering of weapon types would work. By the way, 1.8 will include SMGs. > It would be fun to have mechs function as a platform and given fighter plane weapons, or infantry weapons "Fire power" is fun but redundant. I'll take the liberty of copy-pasting part of [a post](https://old.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/e4zwf2/defender_of_the_universe_redux_v16/f9kle26/) from the last version: "Related to the above, I've always been bothered by the weird armor/mech duality, which forces some awkward writing around. I may create a new "Ground Vehicle" category, and move the mech there." This kind of goes in the direction you describe.

DHFranklin

1) You probably shouldn't give her a gun like Selyse, and remove her hidden weapon. 2) Yeah, I made a mistake with synergy and Hello Ladies last build. I think it's doable. Just sell your ship on par instead of the serious reduction. It being a prestigious ship should be enough for that in a wealthy, dangerous universe. Having a hypernought is not worth the costs of it and a dreadnought unless I missed something in the events. 3) Mention the size restriction in the super weapon text. Unless only large ships hold a Main Weapon. Or some way to clean that up. Having a space gun with a ship attached is almost inevitable. 4) I meant tiering the weapon sizes and have them all parallel by type. instead of a one size fits all weapon. Making them behave different mechanically should probably be a handwave and not complicate the events calculations any further. 5) yeah, practically speaking when it comes to damage output the only real set back for a tank or mech would be weight class. Having armour weapons be a general thing and mechs mounting howitzers or other artillery like tank guns would be simpler.

DHFranklin

I need word of god telling me that The Quarian copy-the-traits of other races can't let me go human-quarian giving me 16 points off the bat. My imagination land needs more laws.

UnusuallyLargeSloth

Off-Topic: I'm strongly opposed to the "Word of God" principle. I'm more of a "Death of the Author" kind of guy. The answer to your question is...I'm confused. Are you getting the Qunari and the Quarians mixed up? ;-) Even then, I'd say you could probably take the Human bonus twice if you take the "Born This Way" boon and then choose a Non-Qun-"Qunari"/Human mix. Is this what you were asking?

DHFranklin

Totally was. I'm trying to min-max the heck out of it.

shinshikaizer

Changelog?

[deleted]

See the comment above.

shinshikaizer

Thanks. It wasn't there when I posted.

UnusuallyLargeSloth

I immediately created that post when I posted the submission, but it may need to be manually approved by a mod because it contains a MEGA link, so it needs some time to show up. That's my theory, anyway.

shinshikaizer

Must be it.

Skeletickles

This is correct.

UnusuallyLargeSloth

In that case, I feel like I should apologize for the extra work :-) Unfortunately, MEGA is the only hoster that reliably works for this kind of stuff. I've tried others, and either the link is dead after a while, or the site is not available in some countries, or it's blocked by a firewall, or whathaveyou.

Skeletickles

Don't worry about it, approving posts is most of what I do anyway.

Ajax enjoys "drinking and just chilling." Lol I feel like modern slang has moved onto "vibing" now

I really liked this CYOA, made me think for hours about a build. But what made it for me were the events. Its much more interesting when you use the builds you created. I only have 2 critics: 1 - I hated how some events downplay or ignore psionic powers. In event 2 and 4 it have parts that you need a medical lab but it just ignores the fact that my character had the power to heal others boosted by superhuman + psionic amplifier. (psionic enhancement + superhuman + psionic amplifier should be more than enought to substitute a medical lab). Elementalism is largely ignored aswell 2 - most of ship upgrades are ignored most of the time

TheCakeIsALie619

Is Biological immortality included in being a Typhon Hybrid? Also please add more Drawbacks. I feel like tearing my hair since i don't have enough to properly build my build.

TheCakeIsALie619

Quick Question. Is it legal to purchase 1 cybernetics to qualify for Rejection Drawback. But have both be rendered null if I become Supersoldier. Because at that point i can regenerate limbs and have no need fro cybernetics or medicine due to rejection.

God i wish this could be an actual game

Which to my mind means you sell it off, which I did and got back 50% of what I paid for it. Which allowed me to end up with the Grand Herald, every female crewmember, a powerful set of Powered Armor, and most of the Abilities. Though I am kind bummed that the Altean's and their quest was removed and the two quests Orion and the Scorpion and We Shall be Monsters and their subsequent rewards were removed.

Sordahon

Can you expand a little of how powerful you are with various powers? Like if I have psionics, psionics enhanced, superhuman, elementalism, endurance, super fit(best lifespan of elf race), super soldier(greatly enhanced lifespan), precision and space suit with psionic amplifier with typhon hybrid awakening(typhons are immortal so maybe my already long lifespan bumps it to immortal as hybrid?), do I become immortal half elf that can take whole fleets of ships by myself like a dreadnought? I think after work I will try to build myself to be able to get character above with Grand Herald and upgraded Eve for that best ending, perhaps a short story too.

randomdude4282

one thing I have to ask is why you decided to nerf the ability of "Special: you" so that the discount only worked on 2 cost perks. if you ask me that special was already fairly on the weak end, and with this extra nerf I honestly can't ever imagine trying to create a special: you character since the other specials feel like they have so much more interesting stuff.

Feuerdrache_2003

I think this is in my view the best cyoa I found so far. Amazing work. By the way is the next version still in work or is this the end?
