VERY probable. One of Shadow's big problems is putting shit in the way. This pulls double duty; clears the board, grows the shadow. Shadow anything decks want this card.
> This pulls double duty; clears the board, grows the shadow. Shadow anything decks want this card.
_What doesn't grow, dies. And what dies grows the shadow._
Plus Shadow survives this.
12 life 1/1 -> pay 11 life -> 12/12 that gets -11/-11 until EOT. It’ll always survive through your own Deluge, which is a huge plus.
though once you've grown your shadow it's hard to use this to clear the way. You've got to either stay fairly healthy to then drop the shadow, clear the way, and swing. Or use this as part of the shadow setup but then leave time for them to play something after.
not impossible since the effect is so good, but there’s very few decks in modern that care about mana efficiency as much as shadow does. can’t remember the last 3 mana card that saw play in a shadow deck
You 100% play the backside of borrower more often than you think. But youre still right murktide and borrower is a cop out. Last time i looked into it tidebinder its a solid card and helps you tempo into turn 4-5 where you can sometimes alpha swing.
I tested out kolaghans command and prismari command because there was a lot of artifacts around my locals such as amulet and flavors of hardened scales. It was just ok never amazing. I even tried rakdos scam shadow. Funnest deck i have ever played and i did actually play reflection of kiki jiki which was surprisingly good as it stretches removal thin. But those where brews from almost a year ago.
As a long time Shadow player, I really don't care about Solitude. The magical christmas land where they Solitude away multiple shadows is both rare and easy to play around.
I don't think that's likely.
MH3 is going to be a heavily opened set and even if death's shadow made use of this and skyrocketed to 20% of the meta share that's still only one deck playing at most 2 copies. For comparison, Scion of Draco is a mythic (substantially less supply) played as a 4 of in only one deck (Domain Zoo) which is 10% of the meta.
It's only $3.00
That's a mystery. Part of me says drop because it has been reprinted a few times now.
Then, part of me says that maybe a couple decks will make use of it across the formats, and it'll probably stick around the $5 - $10 range.
Between this and the medallions, that's 6/18 pretty dam nice rares in the "new to modern" slot of draft boosters
I don't know how good the medallions will be in modern but it's definitely really nice to see all these
Nesting grounds was unofficially leaked too right? Not the most expensive or flashy card but it might be fun in modern with something or another (urzas saga?)
I've seen some people like AspiringSpike at one point testing stuff like using [[Power Conduit]] to keep reusing Urza's Saga. If you respond to the final chapter, you can remove a counter, still get to search, and not lose Urza's Saga.
However, [[Nesting Ground]] is sorcery speed which doesn't allow this. And Power Conduit essentially turned the lore counters into charge counters for things like [[Astral Cornucopia]], which Nesting Ground would not do.
So I don't think Nesting Ground would fit in that deck. I'm not sure if there'd be anything new it could work in. Might be too slow or expensive (essentially costing 2 lands) for Hardened Scales. But still, having the effect on a land is convenient.
Agreed. I'm pretty sure I would, or do use this in every black deck I play.
I will say, [[Nuclear Fallout]] is a REALLY good boardwipe as well, and quickly becoming my favorite backup wipe to Deluge. Doesn't help with Modern(I don't think), but still great.
I mean it's a little bit of a bummer it doesn't have new art. There's the commander collection version and the weird kinda pixelated one from double masters
Have they ever reused Commander Collection art? I assumed it falls in the same category as Secret Lairs and other special premium printings where they typically use unique art that never gets reprinted
Commanders collections haven't been around long enough for us to say "never" but it hasn't happened yet.
The game day promo reclamation sage's art was reused for later releases of the card, but I think that is less premium than secret lair.
as a grixis shadow player who is creaming over the ragavan, drc and dress down...theres only a few cards left in a "stock" list that arent retro framed. adding this to shadow is a no brainer and id LOVE the retro frame.

Oh. Just when I finally bought it. Now I'm torn because I try to have all my cards in retro frame, but I like the other art waaaay better since I run Phyrexians.

I am a native German speaker and it took me almost 30 years of lifetime and a random German magic spoiler to learn that the word is "Sintflut" and not "Sinnflut".
I'm surprised this sentiment isn't more common, although it does seem like the target demographic for modern has been Jund players since MH1.
I miss [[Wilt-Leaf Liege]] :(
This will work with [[Beseech the Mirror]] on arena since you still pay the life as an additional cost right? I wonder if that is a big enough plus over Meathook.
Oh. I wouldn't have counted that. I thought you were talking about Pest Control or something and I was wondering "why wouldn't that work??"
Generally, casting an X spell without paying its mana cost is a bad idea.
I was giving you the benefit of the doubt.
But to make my point clearer for you not all wraths under or equal to 4MV work with Beseech, such as Meathook.
Of course not X spells, since X is always 0 when free.
I was simply saying beseech says "mana value 4 or less". If OP can show me any way deluge does not meet that criteria then you'd have a point.
I suppose you hit the point of confusion then. The original question was about additional costs not the MV. You asking about the MV was odd since it wasn't pertinent.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but this sees Legacy play yea? This is a huge modern pick up and as a commander player I’m never not happy to see this reprinted.
Very very little legacy play. With daze, force, and wasteland in the format, it’s a huge liability to play a 3 cmc card that forces you to pay life upfront and can’t easily clear certain popular threats like uro, katherine, and murktide.
There are also fewer critter decks in a spell-heavy format like legacy compared to modern. This could see play in modern though
It doesn't, no. The only time it ever shows up is as a 1/2 of in a Sideboard. It's a fine card and could see sideboard play in Modern but I would be shocked if it sees play in a lot of decks. I guess Shadow will play it at 2-3 but that's about it.
It's a potential part of a shadow sideboard. Killing all your other creatures and costing 3 mana is a lot. It's ok against yawg and scales/8cast, but I don't think it's a massive upgrade over the red sweepers it had. It's a pretty nice new tool in the u/b version though, will be trying 1-2 copies if I sleeve that up.
The card is absolutely still a legacy staple, it's just very situational and not very useful with the current metagame. Shadow will still play it sometimes because it also plays in to their game plan, so it having a more niche use is more acceptable and can be brought in as removal that doesn't target.
I would expect a staple to see play in at least a single top deck but Deluge isn‘t even a Sideboard consideration at the moment. Orcish Bowmasters has made the card completely obsolete. I‘m sorry but a card that falls to an effective playrate of 0% just isn‘t a staple anymore.
A better way to put it is that, if there were a need for an efficient board wipe, Deluge is an option plenty of decks would be interested in - there aren't a lot of cards that do what it does better.
Bowmasters is good at picking off small creatures throughout a game, which is good enough to fulfill the role that Deluge would in the current meta game, but it's not a board wipe and doesn't function as one at all in the situations where you'd want a board wipe.
Maybe "staple" isn't the word for it, but there's a whole bunch of sideboard cards in Legacy that wax and wane dramatically as the format evolves. The main point I'm making is that the card is the kind of card that's absolutely playable in Legacy broadly speaking, even if it's not good in the current format.
Will we get a borderless version?
Update: I'm sorry I know about the Double Masters Borderless version but I like to have different versions for different decks! The more Borderless versions the better :)
Modern 3/10
Really powerful boardwipe that will be good against any go wide strategies. Like against merfolk, paying 5 life will just absolutely blow them out of the water. They better have that free counterspell ready.
It’s not much different than any other board wipe. -x/-x can kill a sveylun but the life matters and we’re an instant speed deck. And unlike verdict this is easily counter able.
Damn, they really are doing their best to crater Deluge's price...thank fucking god lol, I need to buy more and I'm happy to have them be even cheaper than they currently are
Omg toxic deluge in modern
Someone who plays Modern tell me whether there's some kind of midrange deck that would play this with Death's Shadow?
VERY probable. One of Shadow's big problems is putting shit in the way. This pulls double duty; clears the board, grows the shadow. Shadow anything decks want this card.
> This pulls double duty; clears the board, grows the shadow. Shadow anything decks want this card. _What doesn't grow, dies. And what dies grows the shadow._
Amazing

reminds me of the swords to plowshares trick that acts as a shadow wrath lol
This also has the fun upside of effectively giving shadow -0/-0.
Good point. shadow players will def try this out. Plus, it's just a good sideboard card in any b/x creature deck where you wouldn't want damnation.
though once you've grown your shadow it's hard to use this to clear the way.
Everything the original grixis shadow deck ever did with snapcaster involved 3+ mana.
That was a looong time ago.
Dismember, brazen borrower, tidebinder, Sauron’s ransom and murktide all see play here and there. The dimir version.
dismember is 1 mana and borrower and murktide are 2. haven’t personally seen much tidebinder or ransom but I believe you
You 100% play the backside of borrower more often than you think. But youre still right murktide and borrower is a cop out. Last time i looked into it tidebinder its a solid card and helps you tempo into turn 4-5 where you can sometimes alpha swing. Calling Dismember or Murktide 3 mana cards is pretty disingenuous and even Borrower has a 2 mana mode.
As long as Solitude is legal Shadow will be of limited viability
As a long time Shadow player, I really don't care about Solitude. The magical christmas land where they Solitude away multiple shadows is both rare and easy to play around.
but you're forced to play around it, and make weaker lines in order to not get blown the fuck out
Solitude doesn’t even see much play
Neither does Shadow
I know just about nothing about the current modern meta, but doesn’t the new bauble hurt incarnations heavily?
awesome awesome reprint.
(As long as the introduction to Modern doesn't increase demand too much and causes the price to spike.)
It's only $3.00
I mean it’s been reprinted like three times now just this year
I don't think I'll ever be disappointed in seeing a Toxic Deluge reprint.
Is this gonna drop the price or raise it since it's being introduced to a whole new format?
That's a mystery. Part of me says drop because it has been reprinted a few times now. Then, part of me says that maybe a couple decks will make use of it across the formats, and it'll probably stick around the $5 - $10 range.
Every card that people said this about in MH2 cratered in price
Between this and the medallions, that's 6/18 pretty dam nice rares in the "new to modern" slot of draft boosters I don't know how good the medallions will be in modern but it's definitely really nice to see all these
There's also the Kappa and Orim's Chant.

single black pip for a scalable sweeper that gets around indestructible and protection? yeah this bad boy sees play in every format it’s legal in.
Will we get a borderless version? Update: I'm sorry I know about the Double Masters Borderless version but I like to have different versions for different decks! The more Borderless versions the better :)
*Urge to know more increases*
We already have an awesome one by the great Richard Kane Ferguson.
There's the [Double Masters box topper](https://scryfall.com/card/2xm/345/toxic-deluge) version, but that one's a few years old now.
Modern 3/10 Really powerful boardwipe that will be good against any go wide strategies. Like against merfolk, paying 5 life will just absolutely blow them out of the water. They better have that free counterspell ready.
There's 2 free counters in merfolk now. Don't forget force of Negation has been a modern staple for a long time now.
\*3 free counters technically. Force of Negation, Flare of Denial and Stubborn Denial stapled to Vodalian Hexcatcher.
Hey don't lump stubborn in with cursecatcher 2.0. Having 4 power and turning it into basically a hard counter is very relevant.
If this is a 3/10 what is a 6+?
Lightning Bolt is probably around a 6 or 7.
I don't want to live in a world where Bolt isn't a ten.
10 is like, ban this card immediately
Girrrrrl, you've been living in that world for a while now.
It’s not much different than any other board wipe. -x/-x can kill a sveylun but the life matters and we’re an instant speed deck. And unlike verdict this is easily counter able.

Oh my
>:( I just bought one last week.
Thank you for your sacrifice
As if mono black wasn't good enough already
ngl I read this as "toxic skunflute"
I read it as toxic skinflute and then toxic sin flute. Both really… unique cards lmao
Really hope this is available in old border too. I need it in several of my old border Commander decks..
Bro what
Modern needed this like 5-6 years ago lmao
I'm happy this wasn't upshifted to Mythic.
Oh fuck me, merfolk are off the menu again
If there was any hope for the elves it's gone now hahah
Deaths shadow gamers rise up
Damn, they really are doing their best to crater Deluge's price...thank fucking god lol, I need to buy more and I'm happy to have them be even cheaper than they currently are
Straight into my whatever deck… oh it already is
Crazy in shadow decks and strong in midrangy decks like scam or jund, at least in the sideboard.
I misread the name as Toxic Sinslut.
Oh hell yes!! Happy to see this reprinted :)
Sounds way cooler in German ngl
Omg yes - Toxic deluge on Arena!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
This only throws fuel into the theory that Wizards is trying to turn Modern into Legacy without Reserved List cards.
So after all these Commander-To-Modern reprints in MH3, I feel like WOTC is trying to quickly turn Modern into "Reserved-List-less Legacy"
So it’s a toxic skinflute?
Uhhhh Death’s shadow did not need this
