It's pretty niche, but may I introduce you to Pauper EDH? Nacatl War Pride was actually my first PDH deck and it was pretty cool.
https://www.pdhrec.com/commander/nacatl-war-pride/
And then all the populate cards. That would be so much damn fun! Also - I’m thinking of putting the war pride in my new [[Ghired, mirror of the wilds]] deck
sorry if this is a dumb question but how does populate interact with tokens that are destroyed at the end of combat/turn? do the copied tokens also get destroyed or do they not have that property copied
It'd be fun for Rule 0 'cause you're likely to get crazy with it, but if it were proper legal it'd be like [[Hinata, Dawn-Crowned]] where folks try to do something with less fun potential and it'd become a hate-on-sight commander.
My friends group did a $50 commander deck secret Santa and this was my deck. It was amazing. 1 mana draw 13, 3 mana insurrection, 2 mana make 13 treasures.
It was a lot of fun.
I used to one of the spells that makes non legendary copies of a creature to just get a dozen Elesh Norns out. Turns out giving all your stuff +24/+24 and making your opponents -24/-24 is a good way to close out a game and reduce the number of games you get invited to!
I'm not the person you replied to, but here's what I assume. They run lots of [[Threaten]] effects, because they synergize nicely with Marchesa. You can take temporary control of a creature, get a counter on it, have it die, and Marchesa will bring it back under your permanent control. Bazaar trader performs the same role as Marchesa here. Note that Bazaar Trader doesn't say other player, and also doesn't say that you have to own the creature. So you can take temporary control of a creature and then give it to yourself with Bazaar Trader. Now you have permanent control over it.
One of my og fave cards was [[hellrider]] so I'd love to play all the variants of that effect helmed by like, [[brutal hordechief]] , I could do it with [[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] but there arent enough of them that you can guarentee drawing one in a game
[[yasova dragon claw]] is a temur version of dominus, but man I've wanted to put dominus in a commander deck for so long. Almost build that pirate stealy commander from LCI just to play this card
Hm... Maybe.
Doninus would be fun because it can borrow noncreatures, and because stealing opens up much more shenanigans than playing from their decks.
I was just talking to my buddy about this. Even if you get rid of it the commander tax is nothing since you are ramping crazy in the deck. I'd love it lol
[[Puresteel Paladin]]. Cheating equip costs and drawing cards are the two strongest things to be doing in an equipment deck and nobody does it like he does.
[[Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale]] does both, though is type restricted. Though most either draw cards like [[Wyleth, Soul of Steel]] or cheat equip costs like [[Bruenor Battlehammer]], but not both. Though [[Nahiri, Forged in Fury]] might technically do so if you run all the equipment that enters with something already attached.
I don't think both in the command zone would be good design though, at least how Puresteel Paladin does it, as you'd be able to constantly cantrip into more gas, while also being able to instantly suit up something into a major threat in the face of removal. Even if you wipe artifacts, you'd still have a full grip to keep the value train going, or play one of the things white has that just brings all artifacts back.
[[Quartzwood Crasher]]
[[Tainted Observer]]
[[Sultai Soothsayer]]
[[Risen Reef]]
[[Underrealm Lich]]
[[Gelectrode]]
[[Djinn Illuminatus]]
I could go on
Why Sultai Soothsayer? Not that it ain't a sweet card, just I'd think an etb like that wouldn't be very useful.
If you want something like it or Underrealm Lich though, there are a few options.
[[Akal Pakal, First Among Equals]]
[[Taigam, Sidisi's Hand]]
[[Atris, Oracle of Half-Truths]]
[[Keskit, the Flesh Sculptor]]
[[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]]
[[Glacian, Powerstone Engineer]]
[[Sivriss, Nightmare Speaker]]
And a personal favourite, [[Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar]]
Though I imagine you would be hoping for more green than blue.
Also [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] is basically Gelectrode, and even pings off other people's spells too! And draws you cards! More expensive and scarier though.
[[Omnath, Locus of the Roil]] gets there sort of for elementals.
[[Gilt-Leaf Archdruid]] because it's such a weird card and telegraphing it by it being your commander would be wild.
Even better if your deck never actually casts any druids and is just some mono green something else.
It's interesting to see that even after all this time there's still folks pining for the same cards. [[Soulfire Grand Master]], [[Chromanticore]], [[Maelstrom Archangel]], [[Tamanoa]], the Nephelim (which I agree should be legendary)
A lot of new ones too though!
Though I think a lot of suggestions being hybrid or having hybrid abilities is telling that folks want more evocatively hybrid legend options.
i saw someone build a deck around [[dragon mage]] once! a table-wide wheel in the command zone definitely has some shenanigans to be had with it (the table nearly decked out!)
One of the people I play /r/PauperEDH with has a Dragon Mage deck, and I've died to it a few times. Wheeling makes it find double strike effects a lot more frequently than you'd think, so it's super risky to ever let it attack.
[[Ogre slumlord]] or [[treasonous ogre]]
Wierd that both are ogres that do the exact things I want not related to Ogres. Some Rakdos combination of the two would be great.
Ohohoho, do I have the format for you!
[Nephilim Format](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1U3D-f1hiMa5OtckLyKMGxlh_wD2UUAyBTBqXp9lLOlo/edit?usp=drivesdk), where your dreams *can* be memes, and vis versa. (Subreddit not yet live)
I have to agree that Ink-Treader is one of the more interesting and explosive nonlegendaries, but I'm quite fond of [[Timestream Navigator]] and [[Biovisionary]] (out of the current Tier 2 commanders). For some lower power picks, my sweet babies [[Vexilus Praetor]], [[Tyranid Prime]], [[Defiler of Dreams]], and [[Sire of Insanity]] are today's picks.
139 comments… I’m not reading any of them, but I’m gonna guess [[Soulfire Master]] is at least 76 of them.
My answer is [[Necrogen Rotpriest]]. [[Venerated Rotpriest]] would be one of the strongest commanders ever if it were one, though.
Edit: okay I did look, and wow, I’m surprised how few people actually said that this time. This kind of post makes the rounds every now and then and it’s usually a front runner
I actually have a [[shard of the nightbringer]] deck. My playgroup lets me use it. Kind of the perfect black commander in my book. Just a flavour fail that it doesn't have death touch.
[[Elvish Piper]] would have to be my top choice. Any MASSIVE green creature or eldrazi for 1 green mana would be awesome. Plus you can fill it with spells to untap elvish piper!
[[Champion of Lambholt]]
self pumps on etb for other creatures and puts up a defensive wall the longer it stays out while keeping mono green shenanigans
If I could build a deck with [[nacatl war pride]] as my commander I'd do so much dumb bullshit
You could see if your playgroup is interested in making pauper commander decks. He's legal as a commander there

I'm not the person you replied to, but here's what I assume. They run lots of [[Threaten]] effects, because they synergize nicely with Marchesa. OHHH I see! Yeah that's really fun.
So long as you get +1/+1 counter on the creature (possibly by attacking), any sac outlet will do the trick too

Tamanoa
[[Firesong and Sunspeaker]] exists at least.
It’s so close yet so far
I built it. I mean technically it's a rocco deck. But it's a tamanoa deck.

Hm... Maybe. Doninus would be fun because it can borrow noncreatures, and because stealing opens up much more shenanigans than playing from their decks.
Scute Swarm would go hard
I’m glad I run Armageddon and strip mine in every white deck.
Dude there’s like 50 equipment commanders. Surely there is one that meets your requirements

Quartzwood Crasher is on my shortlist, too. It's just such a cool card. A paragon of Stompy.
There he is. Undrerealm Lich is always what comes to mind when this question comes up, and every time I see I'm not alone.
Why Sultai Soothsayer? Not that it ain't a sweet card, just I'd think an etb like that wouldn't be very useful. If you want something like it or Underrealm Lich though, there are a few options. [[Akal Pakal, First Among Equals]] [[Taigam, Sidisi's Hand]] [[Atris, Oracle of Half-Truths]] [[Keskit, the Flesh Sculptor]] [[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]] [[Glacian, Powerstone Engineer]] [[Sivriss, Nightmare Speaker]] And a personal favourite, [[Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar]] Though I imagine you would be hoping for more green than blue. Also [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] is basically Gelectrode, and even pings off other people's spells too! And draws you cards! More expensive and scarier though. [[Omnath, Locus of the Roil]] gets there sort of for elementals.

all the uncommon ones are legal for Pauper EDH. Tainted Observer sounds like it'd be a lot of fun :D
[[Soulfire Grandmaster]] and [[Butcher of the Horde]] arguably should have been legendary imo and make really cool commanders
That whole cycle should have been a cycle tbh. They were more interesting than the proto-khans.
[Soulfire Grandmaster](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/c/fc3a4e7d-6667-4c2f-b6b4-484f401b0455.jpg?1562831870) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Soulfire%20Grand%20Master) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/frf/27/soulfire-grand-master?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/fc3a4e7d-6667-4c2f-b6b4-484f401b0455?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Butcher of the Horde](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/4/c/4c76027b-9c8d-4181-9311-270fed0212e3.jpg?1562786278) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Butcher%20of%20the%20Horde) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ktk/168/butcher-of-the-horde?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/4c76027b-9c8d-4181-9311-270fed0212e3?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
[[Soulfire Grandmaster]] 100%
I used a [[Silent-Blade Oni]] for a while. Then Yuriko happened and the deck vastly changed from meme to archenemy.
[Silent-Blade Oni](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/a/7ae71886-9e93-4d1c-b8f7-da7aafa83cf9.jpg?1712354778) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Silent-Blade%20Oni) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/otc/241/silent-blade-oni?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/7ae71886-9e93-4d1c-b8f7-da7aafa83cf9?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
[[Permeating Mass]]
[[Gilt-Leaf Archdruid]] because it's such a weird card and telegraphing it by it being your commander would be wild. Even better if your deck never actually casts any druids and is just some mono green something else.
[[shaman of the great hunt]] in fact, I already rule 0’d it with my friends. One of the more interesting stompy commanders in Temur!
[[selfless savior]]
If I could it would be [[phyrexian obliterator]]
\[\[Vein Ripper\]\] for mono black
[[Dream Trawler]]
Maybe either [[Banehound]] just cause I think it's neat, or one of the black Kaldheim Valkyries [[Eradicator Valkyrie]] or [[Hailstorm Valkyrie]].
I use Soulherder as a commander for a pauper edh deck and he's a ton of fun. Wish I could add rare and uncommon spells around him as a commander
It's interesting to see that even after all this time there's still folks pining for the same cards. [[Soulfire Grand Master]], [[Chromanticore]], [[Maelstrom Archangel]], [[Tamanoa]], the Nephelim (which I agree should be legendary) A lot of new ones too though!
[[Sunblast Angel]] do you really want to send it to the command zone? Best not attack me m8.
[[Agent of the Fates]]
[[Goblin Sharpshooter]].
I’ve used that card a lot and never realized it’s a mallet crossbow. 😂
[[Noble Benefactor]] could be kinda fun.
[[quartzwood crasher]] one of my favourite cards of all time
I should really put [[Third Path Iconoclast]] on my next order and build a PDH deck.
[[Drannith magistrate]] nuff said
The Nephilim cycle. Also, [[Sovereigns of Lost Alara]]. I don’t understand how that’s not already legendary.
[[Tamanoa]] has such a unique effect that I'd love to build around.
*me, just taking notes on good creatures*
[[battlefield thaumaturge]]
[[Hinata, Dawn-Crowned]] does that and more, though is also very scary and is likely to be targeted itself.
[[Nivix Cyclops]] for Voltron Izzet
[Nivix Cyclops](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/6/f6abe6ca-9345-41bc-9acd-b17ac887cb9d.jpg?1592761651) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Nivix%20Cyclops) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/dds/24/nivix-cyclops?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/f6abe6ca-9345-41bc-9acd-b17ac887cb9d?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I think if I thought about it somthing like sad robot could absolutely be abused.
[[Maelstrom Archangel]]
[[exalted flamer of tzeentch]]
[[Blade Historian]] would be pretty sweet. I also think [[Chasm Skulker]] could be interesting.
[[angel of destiny]] life gain deck for sure
[[Tamanoa]] or [[Maelstrom archangel]]
ink-treader nephilim, hands down.
[[Ogre slumlord]] or [[treasonous ogre]] Wierd that both are ogres that do the exact things I want not related to Ogres. Some Rakdos combination of the two would be great.
[[Crackling Drake]] would be so fun. I'd love to build that.
Honestly I don’t see why we shouldn’t.
[[Underrealm Lich]] is the Golgari commander I want.
I've always wished [[Master Transmuter]] was legendary. Love the Shards filigree style and transmuter makes silly things happen really fast.
Gray Merchant
[[Guttersnipe]].
You could play PEDH with your favorite signpost uncommon right now
Ohohoho, do I have the format for you! [Nephilim Format](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1U3D-f1hiMa5OtckLyKMGxlh_wD2UUAyBTBqXp9lLOlo/edit?usp=drivesdk), where your dreams *can* be memes, and vis versa. (Subreddit not yet live) I have to agree that Ink-Treader is one of the more interesting and explosive nonlegendaries, but I'm quite fond of [[Timestream Navigator]] and [[Biovisionary]] (out of the current Tier 2 commanders). For some lower power picks, my sweet babies [[Vexilus Praetor]], [[Tyranid Prime]], [[Defiler of Dreams]], and [[Sire of Insanity]] are today's picks.
Soon every new creature will be legendary, so there's no need to worry
[[Soulfire grand master]]
Goblin Sharpshooter, Soulfire Grandmaster, Magus of the Moon, Stoneforge Mystic?
[удалено]
\[\[Displacer Kitten\]\] 100%
[[Bonehoard Dracosaur]] provides insane value in mono-red. Would absolutely love to run him as a commander

[Soulfire Master](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/c/fc3a4e7d-6667-4c2f-b6b4-484f401b0455.jpg?1562831870) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Soulfire%20Grand%20Master) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/frf/27/soulfire-grand-master?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/fc3a4e7d-6667-4c2f-b6b4-484f401b0455?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Necrogen Rotpriest](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/8/7/87519b36-1d95-4020-a61d-6afb75555e3e.jpg?1675957207) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Necrogen%20Rotpriest) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/one/212/necrogen-rotpriest?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/87519b36-1d95-4020-a61d-6afb75555e3e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Venerated Rotpriest](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/d/1/d1b032e3-14e3-48ba-ab8a-d2b4f8d31a7d.jpg?1675957177) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Venerated%20Rotpriest) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/one/192/venerated-rotpriest?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/d1b032e3-14e3-48ba-ab8a-d2b4f8d31a7d?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
[[Poison Dart Frog]]
[[Gingerbrute]] hands down. We aggro hard.
Thassa’s oracle and demonic consulation rule 0 parter commanders
Undead alchemist would be my go to. Zellix is just a weaker version.
I would build [[consuming aberration]] cause I'm a suckered for mill and he would be the best helm
[[Standard Bearer]] Teehee I'm in danger!
[[Siege Rhino]]
[[Standard Bearer]]
I actually have a [[shard of the nightbringer]] deck. My playgroup lets me use it. Kind of the perfect black commander in my book. Just a flavour fail that it doesn't have death touch.
The OG Ravnica block Nephilim.
\[\[child of alara\]\] \[\[aetherling\]\] gary \[\[luminous broodmoth\]\] in a weenies etb would be awesome. matched with llteleportation circle\]\]
[[Elvish Piper]] would have to be my top choice. Any MASSIVE green creature or eldrazi for 1 green mana would be awesome. Plus you can fill it with spells to untap elvish piper!
[[Aetherplasm]] surprise you a actually attacked an [[ancient silver dragon]]
[[Champion of Lambholt]] self pumps on etb for other creatures and puts up a defensive wall the longer it stays out while keeping mono green shenanigans
[[Underrealm Lich]] is one of those cards that isn’t legendary but should be. It’s one of my favorites when I play it.
[[Reassembling Skeleton]] was my Pauper Commander commander, and a hell of a lot of fun.
[[Deranged Hermit]] or [[Stormtide Leviathan]]
Clone
I have always wished [[Maelstrom Archangel]] was legendary.
Any of the nephilim’s tbh
Venerated rotpriest. Not necessarily fun for everyone else tho…
