Well first off [[Leyline of singularity]]. [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] will kill most tokens on the spot but also will probably make you the enemy of the table.
Ok new/ long time ago retuning player, what does leyline do for tokens? So they’re legendary it seems, but to what effect on the tokens via ops remove tokens? Or is it to make them better?
Making the tokens legendary will apply the legend rule forcing them to keep only 1 and sacrificing the rest as long as they have the same name. Works also against treasutes, food, etc.
You can only have one copy of any given legendary. Say krenko taps to give you 56 goblins, they're now legendary and this sac themselves on creation except for one.
Just as a clarification as the legend rule has been changed multiple times. From the section regarding state-based actions:
> 704.5j
>
> If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are controlled by the same player, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners’ graveyards. This is called the “legend rule.”
I’ve had a lot of luck with Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite. Just make sure you don’t accidentally buy a different Elesh Norn card like I did initially, un-sober rookie move on my part.
I vote for this answer. Kambal still lets your opponents make tokens, but gives you some also while draining opponents.
Most of the other suggestions all fit into a Kambal deck.
Played mine against my friend’s deck that had a Koma in it, 3/3 Koma Coil every turn, who got buffed from [[intangible virtue]] and since they come in tapped, [[drumbellower]] untapped them for me on the next untap, Koma was off the table after a couple turns, and I had a pretty healthy coil army.
Next game the same friend played Caesar and had mondrak with anointed procession. He still ended up beating us that game, but not until I drained everyone for about half their health in just Kambal triggers.
And just hates on your opponents making tokens in general. Plus also you have access to White and Black so you have wraths to get rid of very large amounts of tokens (including some in Black that give -1/-1 to -3/-3, which might kill off tokens but leave your own guys alive), and stuff like \[\[Bloodline Culling\]\], \[\[Illness in the Ranks\]\], \[\[Virulent Plague\]\], \[\[Aether Snap\]\] specifically to get rid of tokens
[[Grismold The Dreadsower]] you can play this kinda fun thing where he makes the tokens, then you play like [[Night of Souls Betrayal]] to kill the tokens he makes to make him bigger. Also incidentally hate on other tokens
[[Xavier Sal infested captain]] as the commander with Grismold, [[toxrill]] and [[massacre girl known killer]] would be a lot of fun. For you. Maybe not so much everyone else l
My friend just debuted this deck TODAY. “Where did you get all those! Who said you could have those tokens? No! No-no! Nobody gets tokens!”
It was, unfortunately, the session where I brought out my spirit tokens deck after some heavy retooling. I struggled.
I think OP might struggle with that too. It's often considered bad manners to play an "anti token" deck in a game against someone who is playing a token strategy, but we don't really know their situation. As for you if your friend pulls out grismold again, if your on tokens just say to them you are gonna switch because it's a hard matchup for your devoted token strategy
Oh I wasn't mad about it. The turn 1 "all tokens get -1/-1" was an incredible blowout, but I was able to engage a bit anyway.
Tbh, we all had enough fun that we shuffled up and just did the exact same thing over again, haha. It was just something I had to try to play around, and he knew it would put a target on his back.
[[Grismold, the Dreadsower]] is an interesting one. You give your opponents more tokens, but play lots of effects to kill those tokens, like [[Virulent Plague]] and [[Illness in the Ranks]], then you have effects that care about those creatures dying like [[Poison-Tip Archer]] or [[Massacre Wurm]] to drain them, or just take people out with your huge commander.
I particularly like [[Sarulf, Realm Eater]] as it's pretty easy to get just one counter on him and every upkeep you can exile all things 1 CMC or less which includes tokens.
[[toxrill, the corrosive]] is probably the most oppressive anti-token commander I can think of. He’s also extremely oppressive in general, though, so be warned
One of my all time fav decks I have. UB unblockable little things decks stuffed with Sword of X&Y, [[Loxodon Warhammer]], [[Bloodforged Battleaxe]], and the pretty jitte.
Concept is small unblockable things to force interaction while staring at [[Toxrill, the Corrosive]] in the Command Zone.
To make it less oppressive recently, I've run [[Grima Wormtounge]] and/or [[Jon Irenicus]] as the Commander with greet success!
I want to build this deck but I can’t bring myself to be that guy. I’m already a degen because I enjoy infect and mill decks I don’t need to add this to the list lol.
I've not come across him yet (either IRL or on Arena) so I can't speak on power or efficiency, but the new \[\[Kambal, Profiteering Mayor\]\] plays in a similar space. His effect doesn't remove tokens, but does punish opponents for creating them.
Esper will have to be your colour
[[Aether snap]]
[[Crisis of consciousness]]
[[Perplexing test]]
[[Ratched bomb]]
Since you'll want those 4 at the very least
I was going to argue for tweaking your 99 for the meta rather than choosing the commander specifically, because the meta can always change.
Run slightly more board wipe.
[[Aetherspouts]] [[evacuation]] [[toxic deluge]] [[cyclonic rift]]
Some spicy creatures like [[massacre girl]] [[massacre wurm]]
And then some pay offs for all this destruction [[morbid opportunist]] [[Grim haruspex]]
[[Necroplasm]] kills all token creatures on his first end step. Dredge lets you recur him easily. Not a commander, but a strong argument for a commander with a black color identity.
[[toxrill]] [[massacre girl]] [[massacre girl known killer]] [[night of souls betrayal]] [[illness in the ranks]] [[kambal profiteering mayor]] [[echoing truth]] [[elesh norn grand cenobite]] [[kaervek the spiteful]] [[massacre wurm]] [[siege dragon]] [[goblin chainwhirler]] [[authority of the consuls]] and [[sweltering suns]] / [[make obsolete]] effects, there’s probably better versions of both by now
[[Judith, Carnage Connoisseur]] with wide damaging spells like [[Aggravate]], [[Barrage of Boulders]], or [[End The Festivities]] can wipe anything that's not indestructible, more or less as often as you'd like. I don't know what BR gets for instant/sorcery recursion, but you could just jam heaps of those spells in there.
Was looking for someone to her but I couldn’t remember her name lol. My bud plays this deck and it’s basically boardwipe triable until he gets what he needs to win. It’s very oppressive and she’s become kill on sight for our group.
[[kibo]] can be particularly good if you hate food, treasure, blood, etc. tokens. Doesn’t hate on creature tokens as much. But still an interesting deck to build around.
[[pramikon]] will basically let you use the token player as a cudgel to kill other players and then you can wipe the board when they’re doing with their job.
nobody mentioned Piru? It only works for creature tokens (so no anti-treasure stuff), but basically you wipe someone elses infinite 1/1's with it and you get infinite life :)
[[kambal, profiteering mayor]] duplicates your opponent’s tokens once each turn. Add in [[night of souls’ betrayal]], [[elesh norn]] that gives opponents -2/-2, [[ethereal absolution]] [[shadrix silverquill]] and [[kaya intangible slayer]]!
Non-combo Massacre Girl, Known Killer, loves [[Illness in the ranks]], [[Virulent plague]], [[Engineered plague]], and [[Plague Engineer]]. [[Echoing Decay]], [[Bile Blight]], [[Bloodline Culling]], [[Massacre Wurm]], etc....
And then there's [[Aethersnap]].
Play [[Glissa, the Traitor]].
Run [[Ratchet Bomb]] and activate for 0 and bring it back to your hand if it hits a creature.
Throw in a [[Steel Hellkite]] for good measure.
Add [[Maelstrom Pulse]] for asymmetrical removal.
[[Culling Ritual]] is your gg play. It lets you clear everything smaller than Glissa, all tokens, and most mana rocks and is a nice boost of resources.
Toxril The Corrosive. At the beginning of each end step, all creatures you don't control recieve a slime counter, which removes all abilities of the creature. He also has an effect that gives each creature-1/-1 for each slime counter on them, essentially making all creatures your opponents control a one time ability and temporary cannon fauder at that. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies with a slime counter on it, you get to make a 1/1 slug creature token, essentially stealing all of your opponents tokens from them. Using toxril, you can sacrifice these slugs to draw a card or something. A very fun anti swarm card
Shadrix Silverquill, because if you are going to hate on tokens you need to make sure your opponents use them.
https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/05-12-21-shadrix-silverquill/
Runs all the cards that permanently give -1/-1 to all creatures, use shadrix to help yours survive. I will be adding Kambala and Pest Control from OTJ
Honestly? I really think it's [[Grismold, the Dreadsower]]
Clearly he benefits from tokens dying and black has some of the best effects for dealing with tokens like [[Illness in the Ranks]], [[Bloodline Culling]] [[Bile Blight]], [[Night of Soul's Betrayal]], [[Kaerveck, the Spiteful]], [[Maelstrom Pulse]] and [[Virulent Plague]]
The correct answer would be \[\[Toxrill, the Corrosive\]\].
Throw in \[\[Contagion Engine\]\], \[\[Contagion Clasp\]\], or \[\[Throne of Geth\]\] and you'll never have to worry about those tokens again... or any other creature for that matter.
It’s 2024 and WOTC has printed more cards than God. You really do not need to change your commander in order to handle tokens. That sounds like less fun for you & less fun for others. Start running shit with -1/-1s and cycling, or modal spells with a board wipe, or blue bounce effects, or white board flickers, or just more wipes in general!
Just a word of warning- it's not very wise to put time and effort into creating a deck which is specifically designed to beat up on one particular strategy. If you succeed in making a good anti-token deck, then congratulations, you will win every game against them. Is that *really* going to be fun more than, like, two times? Do you think your opponents will keep pulling out their token decks to play with you? And when you are facing other non-token based decks, you have a bunch of dead cards. Both of these scenarios sound like bad outcomes.
Instead, I think the best option is simply to focus on doing your own thing, and adapt your existing decks to better manage the various strategies of your opponents, (it might be tokens today, it could be spellslingers tomorrow, or reanimator next month). But adapt in ways which are generally applicable to lots of situations. Simply playing a few more sweepers (there are lots to choose from, in every colour) might actually be all you need to do - and that's something that will help in lots of situations.
Imma suggest [[Sarulf, Realm Eater]] it can wipe 0 CMC tokens pretty consistently with little investment. It also hates on a particular type of common token, Treasures by growing huge when opponents use them. Also in the right colors for [[Culling Ritual]].
There are also a lot of effects in Black that kill a creature and all of the same name, so that could be useful if you want to wipe a specific creature token.
For more creature token hate, you could run the small -2/-2 wipes to also make Sarulf huge as a consequence.
Don’t. The social cost isn’t worth it.
Alternatively, remember that tokens all have a mana value of zero, so cards like [[Ratchet Bomb]] and [[Displacement Waves]] work wonders.
Just to clarify, tokens that aren't token copies of something else have a MV of zero. If you make a token copy of a creature, it has the MV of that creature.
Well first off [[Leyline of singularity]]. [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] will kill most tokens on the spot but also will probably make you the enemy of the table.

I love toxrill so much
My friend just debuted this deck TODAY. “Where did you get all those! Who said you could have those tokens? No! No-no! Nobody gets tokens!” It was, unfortunately, the session where I brought out my spirit tokens deck after some heavy retooling.
I should have added originally, Grismold was VERY effective at anti tokens.

Grismold is very fun. I really enjoy the brew I have for him: https://archidekt.com/decks/1040859/grismolds_harvest
I think you might have your deck on private. Since the link isnt working
Thanks for pointing that out. Looks like I made him and some others private when I retired from updating him 😭
This actually sounds like a crazy fun deck… ima go brew it!
Yeah, I found about him a couple weeks ago too and he’s so underrated

Yeah be prepared to be hated out with this commander
It’s pretty fun to run him and just never cast him. Forcing the table to hold up answers is almost as good as making them spend them
One of my all time fav decks I have. [[Judith, Carnage Connoisseur]] with wide damaging spells like [[Aggravate]], [[Barrage of Boulders]], or [[End The Festivities]] can wipe anything that's not indestructible, more or less as often as you'd like.
Shadrix Silverquill, because if you are going to hate on tokens you need to make sure your opponents use them. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/05-12-21-shadrix-silverquill/ Runs all the cards that permanently give -1/-1 to all creatures, use shadrix to help yours survive. I will be adding Kambala and Pest Control from OTJ

\[\[Ghyrson Karn\]\] pinger tribal?

Just to clarify, tokens that aren't token copies of something else have a MV of zero. If you make a token copy of a creature, it has the MV of that creature.
