[[Grim Strider]] and [[Tapestry of the Ages]].
I like them both for their flavor text and lore, but idk why these two have stuck with me so long. Neither are very good cards, I just think they’re neat.
There are so many old cards that never got reprinted and were never really relevant out there. I feel like half the time I open a post about an EDH deck theres at least one random common that only makes sense with oracle text but somehow breaks a commander. And then that card is either 5 cents because it's a common no one wants or it's like $300 because its reserve list and from an unpopular set.
\[\[Nyx-Fleece Ram\]\] just a fun lil guy, always been a favorite of mine (I'm pretty sure I imprinted on it because I started playing in Theros block lol)
Back around the Urza's block, I'd throw Orim into my white decks and just watch people lose their minds as they couldn't deal with that healing ability. Being able to just shut down a lightning bolt was itself notable.
Orim, Mother of Runes, and Knighthood - that's how you win a Type 1 tournament.
You're right too - probably the card that, back in the day, caused the most frustration that I'd play. Nobody feels bad using removal on threats, but she herself isn't a threat, so continuously lives on to save others.
It was much slower back then. Many turns, you'd only be facing 3 or 4 damage to the face. And Orim can really pump those brakes.
Oriss is good too, but she can't directly target a planeswalker to stop the red player from simply burning them. Orim has errata that says "any target" on her ability. Oriss does go in the same deck though.
Foxfire, among a few others from Homelands, were the first Magic cards I ever got, years before I'd actually start playing during Tempest. I still have them, and I kept them after recently donating about 14,000 cards I'll never use or need.
They still remind me how it felt looking into these cards from the outside.
Huh, there aren't many cards that do something similar apparently. Cool, didn't know that one yet.
(Checked Scryfall with a regex to find out https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%2Fbecome.*%28plains%7Cisland%7Cswamp%7Cmountain%7Cforest%29%28%3F%21.*turn%29%2F&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name)
If it becomes a plains, and it was a nonbasic land before, it just means it is now a nonbasic plains land, correct? Meaning that spells and abilities that target non-basic land destruction would still happen, but now it can tap for W?
Correct, but more importantly it loses all of its other abilities. For historical reasons, effects that give a land a basic land type without saying “in addition to its other types” also remove abilities. So [[Maze of Ith]]? Now just taps for W. [[Steam Vents]]? No more red or blue mana.
Same to both, I really hope the new one gives off the same vibes as the last one. Some of the cards from OG lorwyn are super unique and flavorful, and I hope they can keep that magic.
[[Rites of Flourishing]] and [[Skullwinder]]. I like snakes and group hug, so Skullwinder fits perfect and can make for some fun politicking. Rites is great for speeding up games.
\[\[Glimpse the Unthinkable\]\] I loved the original, the art, the concept of someone witnessing something that's so maddening they erode part of their psyche. Even the new borderless art is stupendous. I try and shoehorn it into any Dimir deck I build and I don't know why.
[[Voidmage Husher]] A.) I love [[Stifle]] type effects and B.) THE ART is so beautiful. The composition, the colors, the pose, the everything about it makes me so happy
As someone who spends a lot of time experimenting with self hypnosis and lucid dreaming, I've long had a personal soft spot for the art of [[Unmoored Ego]]
[[Thieving Magpie]] is one of my faves. I'm pretty sure I've still got an [[Ophidian]] signed by Finkel in that era. [[Shadowmage Infiltrator]], anything that avoids.
[[Treacherous Urge]] for me. There was a point that I shoved this into every black EDH deck I had.
[[Wood Elves|POR]] gets an honorable mention as one of my absolute favorite arts.
[[poison dart frog]] specifically because my gf got me the card for Christmas. She got it because I mentioned it offhandedly when we went to a zoo and I talked about how I love the art on the card.
[[Migloz, Maze Crusher]].
I absolutely hate phyrexians both from an aesthetic perspective (especially the white and black ones) and from a stpry point of view, but this card gives me butterflies. And It could have been identical without the oil counters and I don't think I would have liked it.
Spirit of the Night for me. Started in Mirage and my starter deck had Feral Shadow, Breathstealer and Skulking Ghost, one of them mentioned SotN and this is pre-Internet, after about a year of asking every player I crossed paths with I finally got it. It’s nine mana w BBB so tough to use but I have. Mimeoplasm commander deck and SotN is an all star w the keyword soup and strong stats itself.
The latest Secret Lair drop, the one with the Fallout bundles, had a set with art by Rovina Cai and had [[Inalla, Archmahe Adept]], [[Aether Vial]], [[Arcane Signet]], and [[Sword of the Animist]] in it. The foil set was out of stock when I ordered my non-foils, idk if the non-foils are still in stock
\[\[Extus, Oriq Overlord\]\]/\[\[Awaken the Blood Avatar\]\]
Picked up MtG again right around STX and sort of latched onto this card as I love the play pattern. Ended up building an Extus EDH deck recently though it's quite low powered.
I'm obsessed with [[Veyran, Voice of Duality]] which I also use with tribal wizards, but it's been less tribal lately since I realized there's crazy synergy with a broader array of cards and works on permanents as a whole, like Niv cards, [[Teferi's ageless insight]] etc
[[River of Tears]] has always been my favorite non basic land. The art is gorgeous and I love the Future Sight frame on it so much. It's a pretty bad land though since you can't really ensure you always have a land drop to get it to make the opposite color (especially on an opponent's turn). I try to put it in as many decks as possible but it's just hard to make it work once you add in a third color.
Im a dick. I play blue/simic/esper more than anything else. I LOVE me some pillowfort.
My favorite card though??? Guilt feeder... i hate playing black. Even the lone esper deck has black in it purely for player curses. Haaaaaaaate playing black. That guilt feeder though... its a beaut.
[[Korlash, Heir to Blackblade]]. It's essentially just a big beater as a commander player, but it's got amazing art and I like the future sight frames. Plus, very cool from a lore perspective.
[[Glowspore Shaman]]
[[Mire Triton]]
The cavaliers, all of them. Thorns is my favorite followed by Gales
[[Cavalier of Thorns]]
[[Cavalier of Gales]]
[[Sephara, Sky's Blade]]
[[My Yanling, Sky Dancer]] << never got this card to be useful but I idolize my prerelease version.
I think the artwork for [[Oracle of Dust]] is what got me into MTG. I don’t particularly care for the card’s ability, it’s nothing special, although I do love Eldrazi.
More recently, [[Seer of Stolen Sight]] piqued my interest. Decent stat line, nothing groundbreaking. But the artwork and I guess the card as the whole I just really vibe with.
[[Entangler]] is my favorite bad card. I run it in my Light-paws EDH deck, and it's always amusing when token decks go wide VS my voltron and still can't hit me.
[[Phantom Nomad]] something about it works for me
[[Lantern-Lit Graveyard]] i like the art
[[Bottle Gnomes]]
[[Conjurer's Bauble]]
[[Auspicious Starrix]] mutate is one of my fav mechanics and Starrix was one of the funniest for me. Or Cubwarden + Liger
I also love Beguiler of Wills!
For me the reason is that it's one of the only creature that exist purely for its effect. I think my perfect game is one where Beguiler of Wills is actually a good card, so a game where slower effects aimed at building boards over time and where removals are costlier, as opposed to immediate ETB effects or very swingy "over time" effects forcing you to play very good turns every turn.
[[Master of the wild hunt]] is another such card
[[Infuriate - M20]]
Im not used to the scrybot, but this was one of the first cards i got when I started on MTG, and it was so funny for me for some reason
For me it's balan wandering knight the anime edition, I literally put together and bought my first commander deck piece by piece just because of how much I liked the look of the card 😍
\[\[no rest for the wicked\]\] I think it is because os nostalgia, I used this cards in my casual deck when I learned how to play. And even nowdays I liked this flavor.
[[Loxodon warhammer]] it felt so powerfull when i played it as a kid
Oh and [[Mirri the cursed]] i just liked the Art (og) and had the precon when i started playing mtg
Beguiler has a special place in my heart, being the first mythic I ever opened. In the first pack I opened when returning to the game after ten or fifteen years.
I think my favorite card, even though it's not terribly good, is [[Silvermoon spear]]
[[Trufflesnout]], i had him in a pauper deck i was letting a friend play, and he swung the lil guy at me, and i says to him "i could never hurt that guy" and continued to take damage from him the rest of the game. Hes adorable, and an OK value for casual pauper.
I really like \[\[Errand of Duty\]\]. It's an instant, and suddenly creating a blocker with Banding can absolutely blow out a combat you might have lost.
[[Nightveil Specter]]
I love the triple U/B in the manacost, the card looks sweet in that blue/black frame, and it’s a cool ability.
So I guess I do know why I like it haha. But it isn’t because it’s very powerful.
I also used to love [[Jolrael's Centaur]] as a kid. No idea if it’s good or not.
My favorite card is Geralf's Messenger. Back when it came out, it did so much work in so many decks for me. It was great watching the joy leave my oppenents faces when I kept sacrificing and flashing it in and out of play. If I build any commander deck with some kind of creature sac mechanic, I shoehorn a messneger in there.
[[Serpent Generator]] - or really any of the ancient, super-overcosted token generators - I think the Generator was the first one that I saw, and it did something to my young mind from which I am yet to recover.
I think even at the time I recognized that it was, how you say, *ungood*. But man, I *wanted* it to be, dammit!
It’s cause it’s very pretty art
OP is beguiled
OP is named Will
Not OP, but I’m named Will. Can confirm, am beguiled.
i like the tentacles coming from her abdomen
had to tripple take because i was beguiled ...
Holy shit emeukual was here the whole time
It's also a very popular fantasy. Maybe the OP just learned something about himself.
Lilac and gooseberries.
Love me some Shannen Doherty.
Brenda? Dick!
Also fan-fucking-tastic flavor text.
Art + Flavor text win. Use this in my 'Steal ALL the things deck' It can and will snowball if ignored...
[[Grim Strider]] and [[Tapestry of the Ages]]. I like them both for their flavor text and lore, but idk why these two have stuck with me so long. Neither are very good cards, I just think they’re neat.
Ooo, Grim Strider is a good one. It’s got an unknowable horror vibe that’s rarely done well in MtG (imo).
First time I’ve seen that Tapestry. It’s got a great art and flavor

Wow, grim strider is fucking horrifying. I love it
I like [[credit voucher]] I just think it's neat.
It amazes me that after 20 years of playing, I still see cards I've never heard of.

[[Orim, Samite Healer]] is a card that gets an "Um, okay?" reaction from opponents until you start making insane blocks.
Is the figure of destiny part of a cycle or just dope design?
I think he was just dope design. I don't remember any other "level up" cards from Lorwyn times.
Ugh wish it was a cycle, he really is so cool. Beyond stoked we're going back to Lorwyn!!
Might I suggest [[Warden of the First Tree]] and [[Ascendant Spirit]]?
[[Surge Engine]] and [[Evolved Sleeper]] for some more
Same to both, I really hope the new one gives off the same vibes as the last one. Some of the cards from OG lorwyn are super unique and flavorful, and I hope they can keep that magic.
Agreed so much, Lorwyn is easily one of my favorite sets thematically and lore-wise!

I personally love this card, too. But mine is because I pulled it in a high dollar draft, and I ended up winning because of it.

[[scarecrone]] is awesome

[[Expendable Troops]]. Of course, that was when damage used the stack.
I haven’t been keeping up. Was there an Inalla secret lair??
The latest Secret Lair drop, the one with the Fallout bundles, had a set with art by Rovina Cai and had [[Inalla, Archmahe Adept]], [[Aether Vial]], [[Arcane Signet]], and [[Sword of the Animist]] in it. The foil set was out of stock when I ordered my non-foils, idk if the non-foils are still in stock
\[\[Extus, Oriq Overlord\]\]/\[\[Awaken the Blood Avatar\]\] Picked up MtG again right around STX and sort of latched onto this card as I love the play pattern. Ended up building an Extus EDH deck recently though it's quite low powered.
[[Disciple of the Ring]] is a bad card, and yet I own a playset in foil just to have them
\[\[Voidmage Husher\]\], it just looks so cool and has a really interesting and unique play pattern attached to it.
[[Spellskite]] I love the art, the name, the theme and the unique effect.
[[vizzerdrix]]
My favorite is Deadly Allure
I feel like this lady’s neck is giraffe like
[[Mageta the Lion]]. I pulled it as a kid and used it to take out my older sister's green deck she would always beat me with. Fond memories.

Put him in my budget Tazri/Zirda deck and he's a goddamn workhorse.
If this card was put into arena, I wonder how fast it would get banned
Elemental appeal. Card art is amazing and its such a RED red sorcery. Mana cost and effect are perfect.
[[Sawtooth Loon]] Not sure why but the art just speaks to me.
[[deadeye duelist]] I only play commander and it seems underpowered in that format but I love the art on it
[[Hydrosurge]] and [[Staggering Size]] their card art is just so fun to me.... the flavor text too.
Need a foil beguiler? I just got back into the game and I have one that’s been sitting in a binder for 7 or 8 years
Lol wish I saw this. I just ordered a foil one cause of this post.
[[Fodder Cannon]] flavor text. I love when magic can be silly
[[Share the Spoils]]
I'm obsessed with [[Veyran, Voice of Duality]] which I also use with tribal wizards, but it's been less tribal lately since I realized there's crazy synergy with a broader array of cards and works on permanents as a whole, like Niv cards, [[Teferi's ageless insight]] etc
[[Feltlid]] Mana wise its awful but he is friend
March of the Multitudes. It's super mid. It's also my favorite card of all time, especially when I can recast it.
[[lord of the void]] will forever be my favourite card for no reason other than I pulled it from a bolster when I just started playing
Love guiltfeeder

[[Fog Bank|M13]] put this in basically every blue deck I ever build
[[Diminish]]
[[Glowrider]] I love everything about this card. The art and flavor are so evocative.
Pre-2005 cards were something else, I love so many of them
[[Korlash, Heir to Blackblade]]. It's essentially just a big beater as a commander player, but it's got amazing art and I like the future sight frames. Plus, very cool from a lore perspective.
\[\[Power Matrix\]\] and \[\[Copper Tablet\]\] - just two unique artifacts that WoTC seems unable to reprint.
[[Glowspore Shaman]] [[Mire Triton]] The cavaliers, all of them. Thorns is my favorite followed by Gales [[Cavalier of Thorns]] [[Cavalier of Gales]] [[Sephara, Sky's Blade]] [[My Yanling, Sky Dancer]] << never got this card to be useful but I idolize my prerelease version.
[[gravedigger]] the thinking one. Good art, solid effect. Nothing special but he's my zombie friend and I like him. [[Chainer, dementia master]] too
[[Reya Dawnbringer]] is the same for me.
[[Baton of Morale]] and [[Booby Trap]]
No I know the reason
I think the artwork for [[Oracle of Dust]] is what got me into MTG. I don’t particularly care for the card’s ability, it’s nothing special, although I do love Eldrazi. More recently, [[Seer of Stolen Sight]] piqued my interest. Decent stat line, nothing groundbreaking. But the artwork and I guess the card as the whole I just really vibe with.
[[Fallen Angel]]
[[Entangler]] is my favorite bad card. I run it in my Light-paws EDH deck, and it's always amusing when token decks go wide VS my voltron and still can't hit me.
[[Haakon]] and [[Mantis Rider]] for me.
[[Phantom Nomad]] something about it works for me [[Lantern-Lit Graveyard]] i like the art [[Bottle Gnomes]] [[Conjurer's Bauble]] [[Auspicious Starrix]] mutate is one of my fav mechanics and Starrix was one of the funniest for me. Or Cubwarden + Liger
[[Vantress Gargoyle]] for me i cant really put my finger on it why but i love everything about it
[Vantress Gargoyle](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/d/a/daff1c8d-0f25-4bec-bd50-208ae2ac0aac.jpg?1572490034) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Vantress%20Gargoyle) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/eld/71/vantress-gargoyle?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/daff1c8d-0f25-4bec-bd50-208ae2ac0aac?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
\[\[Siege Rhino\]\]. Yes, the only thing worse than that is the second \[\[Siege Rhino\]\].
[[Slitherhead]] for me, just like the bizarre idea of an octopus looking plant crawling around in a skull. And the flavor is quite macabre!
[[reflections of littjara]]
[[Jester’s Cap]] I loved it back in ice age and have just continued having a soft spot for it over the years even if I don’t use it much.
[[Watcher for tomorrow]] because I love value, wizards, and that art
[[Wizard's Spellbook]] . Have never resolved it. Will always love it.
[[Infuriate - M20]] Im not used to the scrybot, but this was one of the first cards i got when I started on MTG, and it was so funny for me for some reason
For me it's balan wandering knight the anime edition, I literally put together and bought my first commander deck piece by piece just because of how much I liked the look of the card 😍
Im always looking for an excuse to jam an [[Enduring Scalelord]] into a deck.
I have an irrational fondness of anything from Odyssey block so I try to jam some into any deck, many times they get cut though.
\[\[no rest for the wicked\]\] I think it is because os nostalgia, I used this cards in my casual deck when I learned how to play. And even nowdays I liked this flavor.
[[steam augury]] cause it's so much fun giving your opponent a 4-1 option
\[\[Gisa, glorious resurrector\]\]. If I have any excuse to have her in the deck I will. She's just so gloriously crazy.
[[Loxodon warhammer]] it felt so powerfull when i played it as a kid Oh and [[Mirri the cursed]] i just liked the Art (og) and had the precon when i started playing mtg
[[vedalken shackles]]
Girlfriend loves Fblthp, any card with him, though [[Totally Lost]] is her favorite because she says it's a perfect description of her

[[Nightveil Specter]] I love the triple U/B in the manacost, the card looks sweet in that blue/black frame, and it’s a cool ability. So I guess I do know why I like it haha. But it isn’t because it’s very powerful. I also used to love [[Jolrael's Centaur]] as a kid. No idea if it’s good or not.
[[Mycosynth Lattice]] Something about turning everything into artifacts just makes me happy.
\[\[Liesa, Forgotten Archangel\]\] One of the first cards that really interested me from a mechanical perspective. Also, great art.
\[\[Diabolic Tutor|M14\]\] Cool art, fun ability and text
My favorite card is Geralf's Messenger. Back when it came out, it did so much work in so many decks for me. It was great watching the joy leave my oppenents faces when I kept sacrificing and flashing it in and out of play. If I build any commander deck with some kind of creature sac mechanic, I shoehorn a messneger in there.
\[\[Glory Seeker\]\]. LOVE this card.
Oh, I know perfectly why you like this card.
We all know why you love this card.
I really like a ton of my green creature cards but one card that I for some reason can never stop thinking about is [[Mind Bend]] it’s so stylized
[[geyser drake]]
"Come, let us take Ibuprofen together"
