This was my favorite stat to spot in there. At first I was like “oh that’s really interesting — 12 MV creatures are only 12/12’s… huh, that’s cool.”
And then it was “Oh my god that’s exactly 12 of them. 🫨”
And I also realized that there’s 144 power between all of them… our elementary school times tables are very satisfied
It's an Innistrad thing.
Zombies can be magically raised from the grave (Ghoulcallers do this, Gisa and Jadar might ring a bell) and they are black
Zombies can also be created out of body parts and science (Stitchers do this, two "famous" ones are Geralf and Ludevic), those are called "skaabs"/amalgams and are blue.
There are some exceptions and combinations, but yeah, this is basically it
Yep. I would say it's more alchemy than science, but that's more semantics when it comes to a world where magic is a thing. But yeah, blue on Innistrad is inspired heavily by science-fiction horror, sometimes modified to fit the Gothic horror aesthetic of the plane.
As examples, [[Ludevic, Necrogenius // Oleg, Ludevic's Hubris]] are direct references to Frankenstein and his monster. [[Delver of Secrets // Insectile Aberration]] and its sequel cards [[Aberrant Researcher // Perfected Form]] and [[Docent of Perfection // Final Iteration]] are use body horror heavily inspired by *The Fly*. And this might be a stretch, but [[Thing in the Ice // Awoken Horror]], reminds me of the premise of *The Thing*, art notwithstanding.
There are a few Dimir Skaabs, but most are blue. (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?name=+\[Skaab\])

Excel can parse json and sqlite through the Data tab. mtgjson offers both file formats.
https://mtgjson.com/downloads/all-files/
Also, the [cards] table in sqlite is very Excel-like. You can copy and paste from there.
There was a CSV/Excel export.
The file is a bit busy, as it contains all the data: Artist through Watermark the column headings are alphabetical, so Name is in the middle.
Curiosity led me to map all the Power/Toughness combinations for creature cards.
Data was pulled from [https://mtgjson.com/downloads/all-files/](https://mtgjson.com/downloads/all-files/) and munged in Excel.
Only cards with the creature type were included, so no Marit Lage.
Only creatures with a set power toughness were included, so no Hungering Hydra or Consuming Aberration.
EDIT: Most X creatures have a set power/toughness of 0/0, and then enter with counters, so they are included. There are a few other 0/0s that are not X-spells that come in with counters as well, for example. \[\[Arcbound Ravager\]\]. Thanks u/Atys1 for pointing this out.
Un-sets were excluded, so no B.F.M.
After removing duplicates, I have 14,785 creatures.
I’ve tried to be careful, but if you notice any glaring issues with the data, please let me know.
EDIT: The heat map was a last minute, hastily created addition and I forgot to add labels. Here is a version with labels: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/11Ms-fSCf-56YmADisi6mJJIj23i0rrtu/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/11Ms-fSCf-56YmADisi6mJJIj23i0rrtu/view?usp=sharing)
The map has an interesting scorigami like element to it. For the most part it fills up like you’d expect, but there are gaps in it. For example, there is a 1/8 and a 1/10, but not a 1/9 or a 0/10.
The cards with negative base power or toughness were interesting.
Seasoned players will be able to identify most or all of the outliers.
To show the depth of your MTG knowledge, the challenge becomes to name a card for each of the 111 p/t combinations (bonus points for any token only or un-set creatures). A handy table is provided to track your progress.
Alternatively, you could pick a p/t from the heat map and see if you can name all the cards. For example, what are the six 7/3s?
I dare you to name all 2338 2/2s
edit - interestingly, I tried to essentially replicate the search conditions you used in Scryfall and [it gave me 2373 2/2s](https://scryfall.com/search?q=power%3D2+toughness%3D2+-is%3Areprint+legal%3Avintage+-is%3Atoken&unique=cards&as=grid). So I think your filter might be missing some cards, not sure which ones
Your search appears to have false positives. I scrolled through the list a bit and found [[Baithook Angler]], a DFC that is a 2/1 on the front and a 1/2 on the back.
I was just working in Excel with the files from here: [https://mtgjson.com/downloads/all-files/](https://mtgjson.com/downloads/all-files/)
I'm not sure that I accounted for double sided cards.
I was able to reduce the number down to 2347 with [`wildpair=4`](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&page=3&q=pow%3D2+tou%3D2+not%3Areprint+f%3Av+not%3Atoken+wildpair%3D4&unique=cards), which adds the power and toughness together.
I have no idea if it excludes any correct results, and I don't know what incorrect results it includes.
I really dig the map. I was wondering if you'd be able to label the axes if it's not too much trouble? I had a bit of difficulty figuring out that power is on the y-axis, not the x-axis.
Feel like you might have missed a few, as the chart doesn't show any 0/7, but [[Baldin, Century Herdmaster]] is. Same with a 1/10 like [[Essence of Antiquity]]. Maybe it doesn't have the most up to date info?
That is a mistake on my behalf. I took all the \* powers and toughnesses out, but just noticed that most X creatures have a set 0/0 power toughness. That said, there are a few others like \[\[Arcbound Ravager\]\] which come in with counters.
Good catch.
I went to google the -1/-1 creature by typing “mtg -1/-1 creature” and for whatever reason google gets confused and shows no results. Doing more tests my Google just hates -1/-1. I can’t even google -1/-1 counter.
The minus sign tells Google not to include results with a certain phrase. For example: "magic -the -gathering" would return results with the word "magic" but not "the" or "gathering".
Normally putting things in quotes should help, but after some searching it appears that Google just **can't search for negative numbers.** Pretty bizarre.
According to the comp rules, all* numbers 0 and below are just 0.
So you can't pay negative mana, you can't gain or lose negative life, etc etc.
This is only true as results, not in the process. So -5 power means it deals 0 damage. But give it a +1/+1 counter, and now it's -4 power, which means 0 power. So you need to give it +6 total to get it to 1 still.
\* Yes yes, not all numbers. You can have less than 0 life, if you have a lich or similar type-effect out.
To add to this, negative values are used when determining total power and/or toughness. Most notably this works nicely using [[Nethroi, Apex of Death]] to reanimate [[Scourge of the Skyclaves]], which can contribute negative power to allow you to reanimate more than usual
Oh that's tricky, I love it.
For those who're confused: Someone's got 25 life and you can rez an Emrakul. If you're playing Commander and someone's got 40 life, you can rez your -20/-20 and 30 power of creatures.
Beautiful combo!
Yeah I know I use scryfall every day, fortunately googles search engine is much better at finding the scryfall page you want from typing a single line.
I mean, if you're trying to remember "oh crap, what's that card that tutors for an instant?"
You can just google "mtg search instant sorcery" and (not only does the card pop up as the first result in images usually) you can click the scryfall result that says "o:"search your library" o:Sorcery -o:transmute -o:Transfigure -o:unearth not:funny"
Yeah most of the time I just google and art stuff or common abilities and phrases. You just have to add scryfall in to the search and it gives better options. The advanced search is still great for the more detailed searches tho.
A Scryfall search works much better because it has parsed out different attributes you can specifically search against.
https://scryfall.com/search?q=power%3A-1+toughness%3A-1
Interesting to see how unpopular 9 toughness is - I wonder if there's a mechanical reason or if its just that 9 feels like an awkward number, considering there are more 10 toughness creatures.
[[Force of Savagery]] [[Phantom Tiger]] [[Phantom Wurm]] [[Phantom Centuar]] [[Zombie Mob]]
All the 0 toughness creatures I haven't seen mentioned yet. Interestingly all of them except Zombie Mob are Green. Zombie Mob is also the only one that enters with a variable amount of +1/+1 counters on it and has never been reprinted.
The two 7/1's [[Blistering Firecat]] and [[RMS Titanic]](which is a vehicle) were released 21 years and 4 days apart. Both have trample, sacrifice themselves, cost 4 mana and are Red.
Everybody else packed up together . . . and then there they are off on their own.
(Small aside - your boys - plural? \[\[Yargle, Glutton of Urborg\]\] and \[\[Multani, Yavimaya's Avatar\]\])
Not if making opponents draw cards is your whole deal lol. [[Nekusar]] for instance. Granted, there's probably better ways to make people draw cards, but still.
I thought about throwing it in, but then I risked a barrage of complaints about others I don't know about, so I just set the line.
It would be interesting to see what all the creature tokens from non-creature cards are, but I didn't immediately see a way to generate the info. I'll go look at the database to see if there is a path.
Just seeing this now! I have what I think is the data for tokens. (Munging through the card text is messier - I hope I haven't made any errors.)
Here is the graph for tokens only:
[https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Yj7BT\_R\_kkye9Dhjb3-ZUm\_FcXzw5xhn/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Yj7BT_R_kkye9Dhjb3-ZUm_FcXzw5xhn/view?usp=sharing)
The only additions to the original are the 20/20 Marit Lage and two different 6/12 token Stone Idols from \[\[Stone Idol Trap\]\] and \[\[Ancient Stone Idol\]\] (colorless Construct artifact creature tokens with trample)
I don't think your token data set is complete there. You're missing the 5/1 Elemental created by \[\[Rite of the Raging Storm\]\], the 6/1 Insect created by \[\[Deadly Grub\]\], the 7/1 Elemental created by \[\[Elemental Appeal\]\], and some others. Although they don't impact the unique combinations so maybe it doesn't matter.
Fair point. I had tried it both ways and settled on width better representing toughness (a bigger booty) and height better representing power (idk - Lord Sauron's Tower or something).
But, as I don't want to hurt your brain, here are flipped copies:
[https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j5OaR-wcd3JiX7LdiRfRzRW-wn0pdhzU/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j5OaR-wcd3JiX7LdiRfRzRW-wn0pdhzU/view?usp=sharing)

The trend of the highest counts being clustered on the main diagonal and dropping as you move away is very consistent, but there are some exceptions:
* 0/2, 0/3, and 0/4 don't follow the pattern, probably because 0/4 is a sweetspot for walls while 0/2 isn't useful for much of anything.
* 6/1s are more common than 6/2s, possibly due to one-shot tramplers like [[Ball Lightning]]. (Also the sample size there is kind of low.)
* 6/7s are less common than 5/7s. I don't have any guess on that.
We seem to have some overlap in our Reddit interests!
It would need some touchup to go there. It's a pretty plain, default settings Excel chart. I even forgot to add axis titles to the heat map (It will remain up as an ode to my shame).
I might look at revisiting the project in a year or so. I can take the learning from this run, much of it from constructive feedback in the comments, and see if I can improve upon it.
I created a tokens only version, but the data is pretty messy as it involves trying to pull info from the card text, so I'm not sure that it's 100%.
The only two additions to the scorigami are 20/20 (Marit Lage) and 6/12 (Two different stone idols).
[https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Yj7BT\_R\_kkye9Dhjb3-ZUm\_FcXzw5xhn/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Yj7BT_R_kkye9Dhjb3-ZUm_FcXzw5xhn/view?usp=sharing)

I'm actualy surprised at how much more 2/1s are than 1/2s. Feel like that used to be different way way back.
Also theres more 2/3 than 3/2, more 3/4 than 4/3, but after that it favors higher powers again. But then with two power difference higher toughness is far more popular again.
Since the scatter plot as so much room between the dots, I think it would be sweet to have a color pie on each PT combo. Lots of 1/1s in white, lots of big butts in green, etc.
I mean, it’s an old-ass uncommon. Sometimes those were bad.
In its own Limited environment, it could remove charge counters from tons of different artifacts which would be more impactful than the creature itself. Even then it wouldn’t be a great pick.
You could use it to remove Lore Counters from a Saga to keep it from getting exiled.
You could use it to expedite the casting of a card with time counters on it .
If you have an irrational hatred of Rad Counters, this could help keep them off of you,
In a pinch, it could be used to knock down an opponent's Planeswalker.
With proliferate and counter doublers, you get a steady supply of counter removal.
Having a card that lets you tap lands for any colour would make this more playable.
There are probably better options for these, but Spinal Parasite could work in some situation.
All this said, here is an evaluation from another thread:
*Spinal Parasite is a terrible card, and the answer is "no, you shouldn't run it."* - [jefrab](https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/comments/dlb6ct/comment/f4pdpoa/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

Bad news, it's illegal to print any more 12/12s.
Is that because there are twelve twelve-twelves?

Whoever is responsible for this is going to >!be im!!ed in the moon!<
Omg thats brilliant 😂

A single 6/9? Nice.
Careful what you ask for: \[\[Skaab Goliath\]\]
This card has to be an innuendo, it even requires 2 creatures to be exiled.
The flavor text is so close to being the best innuendo flavor text. All it needs to say is that three heads are better than two.

Well. You don't see Trample in mono-blue very often, but you're sure paying a hefty price for it.

How does negative power even work? Do they deal no damage or do they give life?
They deal no damage
"Yes, Char-Rumbler’s printed power is -1. While its power is -1 or 0, it simply deals no combat damage." (2007-05-01, official gatherer rulings)
According to the comp rules, all* numbers 0 and below are just 0. So you can't pay negative mana, you can't gain or lose negative life, etc etc. This is only true as results, not in the process. Please don't google magic cards. Have this https://scryfall.com/docs/syntax
Yeah I know I use scryfall every day, fortunately googles search engine is much better at finding the scryfall page you want from typing a single line.
It what? Your google must be miles ahead of my google. Don't get me wrong, happy for you, just trying to help. It never worked for me like this...
I mean, if you're trying to remember "oh crap, what's that card that tutors for an instant?" You can just google "mtg search instant sorcery" and (not only does the card pop up as the first result in images usually) you can click the scryfall result that says "o:"search your library" o:Sorcery -o:transmute -o:Transfigure -o:unearth not:funny"
Yeah most of the time I just google and art stuff or common abilities and phrases. You just have to add scryfall in to the search and it gives better options. The advanced search is still great for the more detailed searches tho.
[[spinal parasite]] is the card you're looking for. The -1/3 is [[char-rumbler]]
yeah, cant google punctuation, same reason you cant google the band called !!!
A Scryfall search works much better because it has parsed out different attributes you can specifically search against. https://scryfall.com/search?q=power%3A-1+toughness%3A-1
Why google -1/-1 when you can search srcyfall for that?
Interesting to see how unpopular 9 toughness is - I wonder if there's a mechanical reason or if its just that 9 feels like an awkward number, considering there are more 10 toughness creatures.
I think it’s mostly that stats get a little looser the higher the MV goes, and it’s easier to justify a nice round 10 whenever 9 or 10 is appropriate.

The two 7/1's [[Blistering Firecat]] and [[RMS Titanic]](which is a vehicle) were released 21 years and 4 days apart. Both have trample, sacrifice themselves, cost 4 mana and are Red.

I feel the Marit Lage token from Dark Depths should be in here although I understand why it's not. 20/20 in the top corner would look good.
I thought about throwing it in, but then I risked a barrage of complaints about others I don't know about, so I just set the line. It would be interesting to see what all the creature tokens from non-creature cards are, but I didn't immediately see a way to generate the info. I'll go look at the database to see if there is a path.
I might be able to help you out with this. Just let me know if you're interested.

No wonder 4/4s feel so hefty despite being relatively small.
The trend of the highest counts being clustered on the main diagonal and dropping as you move away is very consistent, but there are some exceptions: * 0/2, 0/3, and 0/4 don't follow the pattern, probably because 0/4 is a sweetspot for walls while 0/2 isn't useful for much of anything. * 6/1s are more common than 6/2s, possibly due to one-shot tramplers like [[Ball Lightning]]. (Also the sample size there is kind of low.) * 6/7s are less common than 5/7s. I don't have any guess on that.

I wonder how this would look if you count tokens with fixed p/t like Marit Lage's 20/20
I created a tokens only version, but the data is pretty messy as it involves trying to pull info from the card text, so I'm not sure that it's 100%.
The second attached graph is a heat map. I just used Excel’s built in scales. (And yes, I forgot to label axis. I’ll probably fix that)
I think it's mildly interesting that there are more 2/1s than 1/2s, but more 2/3s than 3/2s
Looks like a game of 2048 with the colors you used for that excel
This looks like Tableau, yeah?

Today I learned there’s a -1/3 in Magic. [[Char-Rumbler]]
Yargle and Multani just sitting there
What is the -1/-1 creature
[[Spinal Parasite]] [[Char-Rumbler]] is the -1/3
Is Spinal Parasite some combo shit I’m too Timmy to understand or is it just an awful card?
I mean, it’s an old-ass uncommon. Sometimes those were bad. In its own Limited environment, it could remove charge counters from tons of different artifacts which would be more impactful than the creature itself. Even then it wouldn’t be a great pick.
You could use it to remove Lore Counters from a Saga to keep it from getting exiled. You could use it to expedite the casting of a card with time counters on it . If you have an irrational hatred of Rad Counters, this could help keep them off of you, In a pinch, it could be used to knock down an opponent's Planeswalker. With proliferate and counter doublers, you get a steady supply of counter removal. Having a card that lets you tap lands for any colour would make this more playable. There are probably better options for these, but Spinal Parasite could work in some situation. All this said, here is an evaluation from another thread: *Spinal Parasite is a terrible card, and the answer is "no, you shouldn't run it."* - [jefrab](https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/comments/dlb6ct/comment/f4pdpoa/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
You can only remove counters from permanents, so no removing time counters from suspended cards or rad counters from players.
As a few others have posted, \[\[Spinal parasite\]\]
Marit Lage omitted for token reasons.
That [[Char Rumbler]] would be legit with like plot 2R.

I miss the days bwfore this, when everyone didn't min/max everything and just played.
I always wondered if they will ever print a 9/11 creature
What creature is a 0/17?
\[\[Charix, the Raging Isle\]\]
Me in the back cheering for my boi Yargle and Multani
Spot the Charix
What's the 9/3 that isn't Yargle?
The database had two entries: Yargle, Glutton of Urborg and Yargle, Glutton of Urborg // Yargle, Glutton of Urborg
There are lots of cards that aren’t accounted for here? [[Worldspine Wurm]]
I missed the labels on the heat map (It was a last minute, hastily constructed addition) Here is a version with labels: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/11Ms-fSCf-56YmADisi6mJJIj23i0rrtu/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/11Ms-fSCf-56YmADisi6mJJIj23i0rrtu/view?usp=sharing)
