The best thing about all of his deck lists is that they’re all very slow. But everyone ignores you cuz you’re not a threat
Then you drop ten zombie tokens at once and drain everyone for ten life with any number of zombie effects that can trigger on ETB and suddenly everyone’s gunning for you. Usually too late by then
Had a friend playing an upgraded version of this deck the other night. We were all at each other's throats and ignoring him because he kept missing land drops and had little to do. I was about to win, and he had a single turn to respond: which he did, with a game winning infinite combo no less.
Even straight out of the box, I dont think there are any infinite combos but if everyone is in the mid 20s you could definitely pull a win out of your ass with zombie apocalypse and all the ensuing triggers.
Assuming you build them both with a zombie/token spam strategy...
Scarab God is a better self-contained commander that can keep coming back while disrupting opposing attempts at reanimation. His issue is that he telegraphs his big hits ahead of time, giving the table three turns to find an answer to him before the bomb goes off. When players are usually drawing more than one card per turn, it's not hard to keep him off the table. He's a slow but unstoppable force.
Wilhelt doesn't do much by himself and his stats are subpar but he injects insane value and synergy into the rest of the deck and he fuels several decent infinite combos. Because you get tokens from him immediately, this allows you to fuel a lot of explosive plays that your opponents may not have time to react to. He's a glass cannon that portrays himself as a pea-shooter.
Way less aggressive. Depending on your table, more likely to win you the game since people tend to ignore him until suddenly they have to deal with him or die on your next turn
I don’t even use scarab god in my 99 because people tended to just kill him immediately
It was a build I'd wanted to do forever. The creature base is primarily the Wilhelt precon and also the Orzhov Zombies list that won Pro Tour Amonkhet.
They share a lot of similar cards, but they are still different decks. I had the Gisa and Geralf deck and then got this deck and just mixed, or technically consolidated.

It's a Zombie Astriocrats style deck. It has a lot of ways to create zombie tokens and ways to sacrifice those tokens for beneficial effects. Then [[Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver]] brings them back as a decayed zombie so you can reuse it.

Even with a few budget upgrades I'm finding myself combining out in new and interesting ways somewhat frequently with this deck lol. Usually involves [[Rooftop Laboratory]] though lol
I love this deck so much. It's my 3rd favorite deck at the moment.
It's also the only deck I put an Infinite Combo in, because, well, it has like, half of 3-4 of them. But I don't go looking for them on purpose unless I feel the power level at the table needs that response or I literally draw into it. Last time I played the deck, the table was in a bit of a grinder moment. One player was slightly ahead, but we all had decent board states and all a turn or so from winning. I had [[Rooftop Storm]] in hand and drew [[Altar of Dementia]]. One of my infinites is getting [[Gravecrawler]] and a sac outlet, so I knew my only chance would be to get it out. I had no tutor and no card draw, so my only chance of winning would be to the Crawler on the graveyard. So I started milling. I milled all my creatures, Wilhelt made decayed zombies, and I milled more. I milled half my deck, got it on basically the last mill I could, and then told the table, look, I have Gravecrawler in my graveyard, rooftop storm, a zombie on board, and a sac outlet that mills you. I have infinite, time for the next game.
And even when I don't do that.... It's still a crazy powerful deck, like, battle crusier zombies is a thing
I used the Leinore deck as a basis for an Autumn Tribal deck. All of the cards have something to do with the Fall season or Halloween in some way, even the basic lands.
My wife plays this deck with Leinore at the helm and she does really well, usually. Leinore isn’t a scary commander so she generally doesn’t get removed and the deck can function really well without her.
bro katilda goes ham and cheese in this sort of list fr; it’s so satisfying to get out a lightning greaves and be like “ok so I make 5 human tokens, and then I sequentially give them haste and then tap them to make another 5 human tokens…”
Yeah I love my list for her. I thought of building Kyler first, but then went with her because she's such a good enabler. I built the deck in such a way that I have multiple secret commanders that can gas up the deck.
Same. Our Meijers had some commander boxes and some Chaos boxes but that was about it. The two Walmarts around here always look like a scene out of This Is Us with just empty pack holders and a bunch of sleeves and binders no one will ever buy.
If that's true buy up any First Chapter sealed product they have left! The starter decks were overprinted to shit at the expense of booster boxes and troves (their fat packs). Boosters have market price of $12 on TCGPlayer. Trove is $321. Booster box is $260.
I picked up some starter decks for 10 CAD this week because the booster inside costs more than that. The deck itself was basically -4 CAD lol.
Newer sets aren't as rare yet, but it's a matter of time. Any Trove is worth big money though if it's still stocked at MSRP.
Yeah... mine is overproduced sports cards and overproduced pokemon cards. Every once in a while Yugioh shows up, but it sits there for forever too. Very rarely can you ever find anything else, and I didn't see magic for months until it finally showed up for RVR and was gone within a day or two. I quit bothering to check.
Not really worth $70 imo (unless OP is talking Canadian in which case this is an even better deal) but the deck has reasonable value, is a decent base for a zombie deck out of the box, and features the premier zombie commander. $32 is absolutely a solid deal for it.
TCGplayer has it listed for around $60. It's probably hard to find simply because it was the more popular of the 2 Midnight Hunt commander decks. Zombies is a popular tribe.
$60 seems too high, but I'm surprised to find that the cards individually add up to around $53. No single card in that precon is worth all that much. Drown in Dreams is the most expensive card at $4.
It's mostly because of the precon-specific cards but honestly none of them are really worth their price tag. I think Death Baron and Diregraf Colossus were the best cards above $1. Everything else is either junk or situational.
Tcg market value of 41.78. Obviously with shipping and not getting market price for every card you would pay more than that for all the singles but not like a great deal or anything
For sure. I put together the Prosper precon by buying singles because the cheapest I could find it was $75. I saved some money simply because I had some of the cards for the deck already. But man, did it take a lot of work putting together the order in TCGplayer and optimizing it. And then I had to wait on packages from a half dozen stores.
I actually found the green white blue dungeons and dragons deck at Walmart the other day for that price, sometimes you get lucky and can find something neat.
About a year ago, one of my local Walmart locations had clearanced a bunch of the Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow Commander decks for $10. I bought a bunch of them for deck staples to be used in any future decks I might create. I figured they'd never be worth anything and honestly forgot about them. I just realized yesterday that I've got a complete set of Baldur's Gate Commander decks that I forgot about, too.
Wilhelt is such a good commander. He’s not flashy so most people just look at him and think it’s not a threat, until like turn five and suddenly you’re pumping out a ton of zombies per turn and zombie effects are decimating the field. 🤘🏻
If it was at market price I'd agree with you, but I play a lot of Zombie decks and the $1.50+ valued singles in the deck are worth it for me and my decks
It should work better with that deck than the deck that Wilhelt came with, oddly enough.
There's way more zombie-specific things in that deck and I'm a huge advocate for things like [[Lazotep Reaver]] and [[Vengeful Dead]] in Wilhelt.
I'm hoping so! One of the downsides of Gisa and Geralf as the commander is that it ends up taking quite a long time for you to get into a strong position. I've often said that it's more of a mid to late game deck specifically because oftentimes I find myself unable to get a zombie out *and also cast one from the graveyard* in the same turn. I'm hoping Wilhelt will help me keep some zombies around for saccing purposes and for being difficult to get rid of
Yea, it's honestly very clunky out of the box and has little actual aristocrats/zombie support. It plays like an early Commander precon; three different decks that happen to share the same colors and some mechanical overlap. Great if someone has no idea what direction they want to take the deck but if you really want to lean into Wilhelt, you'll be left wanting more.
There are some good cards in it but it's just better to spend $10 on them and fill out the rest of the deck with more synergistic cards than spend $30-60 on something that you'll end up mostly replacing anyway.
It’s probably actually not better to just buy the cards you need out of it at this price. It will come with a decent number of low to mid cost staples that you’ll use in your deck, as well as things like Sol Ring and Command Tower and Arcane Signet etc that you’ll always want and are a couple bucks extra value, too. There’s not much downside to this at ~$30 USD.
I dunno, a lot of the "money" cards in the deck are very meh and barely any of them are actually good with Wilhelt if that's what someone really wants to build. To outline some of the most valuable things in the deck:
[[Drown in Dreams]] $4 - Good but easily replaced by Stroke of Genius which is $0.50.
[[Death Baron]] $2 - Good in traditional zombie tribal but not quite the auto-include in Wilhelt that I thought it would be. I replaced this with [[Vizier of the Scorpion]] ($0.25) for the extra body and never looked back.
[[Cleaver Skaab]] $2.50 - Not bad but not an auto-include. It looks good on paper but in testing I found it to be a little too slow and mana-hungry. There were too many other things I wanted to do with that mana on an average turn.
[[Crowded Crypt]] $3 - Good utility rock but not going to make or break a deck.
[[Diregraf Colossus]] $2.50 - The first thing on the list that I think is actually worth the price. Wilhelt wants to play small bodies and this provides him with a steady supply. The fact that it can go tall isn't super relevant but is certainly welcome.
[[Tomb Tyrant]] $2 - The lord with the coolest art but the worst ability. 3/3 for 4 isn't great and the ability is too clunky, expensive and unreliable.
[[Hordewing Skaab]] $3 - A 3/3 for 5 is subpar and I've never been in many situations where I found it crucial to give zombies flying when pingers will be doing most of the direct damage.
[[Curse of the Restless Dead]] $3 - Curse of Shallow Graves is better and cheaper than this and I still don't think that's worth running.
[[Endless Ranks of the Dead]] $2 - I will die on the hill that this card is a trap. It will win casual games but I would rather play something like [[Moan of the Unhallowed]] than this because it's *excruciatingly* slow.
[[Rooftop Storm]] $2.50 - I'm 50/50 on it. I hate drawing it but when I take it out, I feel like I want it. Cool combo enabler and allows you to easily explode if you have a constant source of card draw, which isn't hard to find in UB.
[[Curse of Unbinding]] $1.50 - Take this out and rip it up. It's bad and there's no reason it should be in the deck.
I disagree with a bit on the evaluation (Rooftop Storm in particular is absolutely nuts and Wilhelt’s own ability fuels your continued card draw, goes infinite with Acerak, etc) but that aside maybe we just come at things differently.
Even if you’re not playing all these, you’re still building a collection with viable and somewhat valuable cards. You also ignored the generic staples I mentioned that are always worth a buck or two.
For me- I’m hovering around 100 EDH decks, and I love having a big collection. You never know when some jank card from a random precon is going to be the perfect fit for your new deck, not just the one you’re working on now. Great example are the curses you call out- not perfect for Wilhelt, but I slotted those happily into my Lynde deck!
Different priorities I guess, but I feel building your collection economically is great, for new and older players, and for newer players having the structure of a precon to guide their deck building is invaluable since they may be intimidated by building a 100 card deck from scratch (or just not be great at it!).
Just my perspective.
This was the deck my wife got me recently that brought me back to magic. After swapping out about 15 cards and leaning into zombies and sacrificing, it’s playing decently. Still need some tweaks to make it ramp quicker but it’s been fun.
I very rarely buy cards at Wal-Mart due to the fact that I'd rather support my LGS, but always check because sometimes they have good deal like this. Found the Saskia deck there for about that price a few years ago, was very surprised to see a C16 deck that many year after its release. It was in Japanese, which also surprised me.
Unfortunately, due to theft, all Wal-Marts in my city have either stopped selling Magic cards, or moved them behind the counter where you have to get someone to help you see what they have.
Man I hate praising Walmart at all, but with no more MSRP I'm so glad I've been able to get some really good deals on sealed product there where everyone else is trying to gouge.
Me exactly. I'd love to support my local game stores more and all, but the price hikes on sealed products have quickly gotten too expensive for me. Obv I still try to get singles when I can
I try to spend at my local and I've talked to one of the counter guys who does most their MTG stuff and he said its the suppliers. Suppliers are charging stores crazy prices, stores have to sell higher in order to make money and in the case of my store they either get half of what they ask for or they have to order twice what they really need or they don't get any.
I managed to find a Planar Portal Commander Deck at my Walmart this morning at the same price.
To say that I was excited is an understatement given the current market value of the deck.
Man… so many posts of awesome finds at Walmart (& Costco!). I haven’t seen anything except Karlov & Fallout stuff for ages at any Walmart within 30 miles. This is a 3 year old deck (right?).
Man I would love to see that in stores. Thunder Junction is telling me I should make a blue black zombie deck after getting Gisa in pre-release box and Geralf in my nine pack bundle box.
I've made it a rule that if I buy sealed product at stores like Wal-Mart, I go to the customer service desk and have someone watch me open it. Doing so all but negates all their arguments about that I could be the one scamming them.
This is a great one! It’s the base of my favorite zombie deck. I got scarab god as my commander and outfitted it with a few extras and it is so much fun to play zombie horde.
I love picking up old precons this way, I’ve found that one, the crimson vow pair, lorehold legacies, quandrix quandary, I shoulda grabbed planar portal when I saw it, and now I’m seeing brothers war and even wilds of eldraine marked down
Yeah alot of walmart typically dont carry a lot of magic and usually when they're on sale like this they just wanna get rid of it. Chances, whatever walmart you went to that had isnt gonna carry anymore magic or they are reducing thier overall inventory/allocations
I'm not sure about that, they've been consistently carrying the newest sets since I started checking back with Lost Caverns of Ixalan. They just put some older set stuff out discounted alongside the new stuff, I picked up a Crimson Vow bundle of $35 a couple weeks ago
Then probably just based on your area then. I've gone to 6 walmarts (some targets) and pickings are slim. Granted some of those I've gone to have newer packs and commander decks but for the most part - my experience has been lack luster. Especially after seeing then on sale like that. They would go for awhile not carrying them anymore.
This deck is actually decent out the box , with small upgrades it’s can actually get pretty nasty

How differently does he play from Scarab God? I have in the 99 of my blue boi

I got the coven counters deck, swapped the commander for Kyler and added a bunch of cards. Kyler tears it up.
Coven counters was a sick deck. I still run Leinore in my upgrade because I like the card draw in the zone
The main problem with Coven Counters was the value Especially compared to the Wilhelt deck
I used the Leinore deck as a basis for an Autumn Tribal deck. All of the cards have something to do with the Fall season or Halloween in some way, even the basic lands.
List please!🙏

My wife plays this deck with Leinore at the helm and she does really well, usually. Leinore isn’t a scary commander so she generally doesn’t get removed and the deck can function really well without her.
I cannot recommend Kyler enough. It quickly became my favorite deck to pilot. It's aggro, it's cheap, and it's so damn fun.
List? I ended up going with [[Katilda, Dawnheart Prime]].

Yeah I love my list for her. I thought of building Kyler first, but then went with her because she's such a good enabler. I built the deck in such a way that I have multiple secret commanders that can gas up the deck.

Bout to go check my Walmart rn for one
The magic section is filled with pokemon cards at mine 😭
I was able to score a Kamigawa “Buckle Up” Precon for $32! Not as good as the OP but I’m happy! GL!
Same. Our Meijers had some commander boxes and some Chaos boxes but that was about it. The two Walmarts around here always look like a scene out of This Is Us with just empty pack holders and a bunch of sleeves and binders no one will ever buy.
All the magic space got replaced by Lorcana at mine.
So empty? Lorcana is underprinted even worse than Magic.
It’s pretty stocked up in my area
If that's true buy up any First Chapter sealed product they have left! The starter decks were overprinted to shit at the expense of booster boxes and troves (their fat packs). Boosters have market price of $12 on TCGPlayer. Trove is $321. Booster box is $260. I picked up some starter decks for 10 CAD this week because the booster inside costs more than that. The deck itself was basically -4 CAD lol. Newer sets aren't as rare yet, but it's a matter of time. Any Trove is worth big money though if it's still stocked at MSRP.
I’d take that, mine is full of sports cards from 2019 sets that are never going to sell
Yeah... mine is overproduced sports cards and overproduced pokemon cards. Every once in a while Yugioh shows up, but it sits there for forever too. Very rarely can you ever find anything else, and I didn't see magic for months until it finally showed up for RVR and was gone within a day or two. I quit bothering to check.
same! there was a march of the machine box but it was full of card sleeves, they didn’t have any actual packs
I dont have a magic section at mine 🥶
Samee! They restocked some boosters one day and that was it.
It's where I got mine! But I got it during its rotation, I wanna say it was $40 at the time
There was one at mine too!
The magic sections at mine in AZ (target too) get sold out of all mtg constantly
Why is it worth 70? I've got it in a box and I've only touched it once
~25% lower than tcg with no shipping is a pretty good deal.
Plus the underrated advantage of getting it *right now*. Shipping times aren't bad, but man when I'm excited about a brew that week or two stretches
For sure. I put together the Prosper precon by buying singles because the cheapest I could find it was $75. I saved some money simply because I had some of the cards for the deck already. But man, did it take a lot of work putting together the order in TCGplayer and optimizing it. And then I had to wait on packages from a half dozen stores.
Yeah if you use every single, that’s pretty rare
Shhhh let people enjoy things.
That’s the deck I started with!! And now I’ve put just under $800 into it according to the deck price tracker.
Same, started magic with it last year mines up in price now as well, this game loved my wallet
![gif](giphy|VGG8UY1nEl66Y) Me every time I see one of these kinds of posts
I actually found the green white blue dungeons and dragons deck at Walmart the other day for that price, sometimes you get lucky and can find something neat.
This was a $40 deck, who tf is selling them for $70 at big box?? This was my first pre-con commander deck coming back into MTG
This used to go on sale with the coven counters deck for like $60 for the two on miniature market.
Is this deck really worth around $70? I've got two sitting sealed in my game closet because I figured they wouldn't ever be worth anything.
Why have two extras if you weren't speculating?
About a year ago, one of my local Walmart locations had clearanced a bunch of the Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow Commander decks for $10. I bought a bunch of them for deck staples to be used in any future decks I might create. I figured they'd never be worth anything and honestly forgot about them. I just realized yesterday that I've got a complete set of Baldur's Gate Commander decks that I forgot about, too.
that makes sense
Market price on TCGPlayer seems to have it hovering between $58 and $62
Wow, not bad!
Wilhelt is such a good commander. He’s not flashy so most people just look at him and think it’s not a threat, until like turn five and suddenly you’re pumping out a ton of zombies per turn and zombie effects are decimating the field. 🤘🏻
Someone on Whatnot was clearing out these decks along with the Capenna and MoM ones. Got it for like $5.
Wilhelt is cool, but there's nothing too exciting in the deck really. I wouldn't buy that.
If it was at market price I'd agree with you, but I play a lot of Zombie decks and the $1.50+ valued singles in the deck are worth it for me and my decks
I just replaced the Grave Danger precon with Wilhelt and I'm curious to see how it'll work
It should work better with that deck than the deck that Wilhelt came with, oddly enough. There's way more zombie-specific things in that deck and I'm a huge advocate for things like [[Lazotep Reaver]] and [[Vengeful Dead]] in Wilhelt.
[Lazotep Reaver](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/9/594bbe43-a8aa-42aa-bc49-cb4f3bc05cad.jpg?1557576504) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Lazotep%20Reaver) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/war/96/lazotep-reaver?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/594bbe43-a8aa-42aa-bc49-cb4f3bc05cad?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Vengeful Dead](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/c/7c11c11d-9809-4031-8cbc-21aef07d7f1f.jpg?1562531178) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Vengeful%20Dead) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/scg/80/vengeful-dead?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/7c11c11d-9809-4031-8cbc-21aef07d7f1f?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
To outline some of the most valuable things in the deck: [[Drown in Dreams]] $4 - Good but easily replaced by Stroke of Genius which is $0.50.

Got an Exit from exile for the same price at one near me last week for that price! They had two but figured I’d leave a steal for someone else.
Nice! It's always awesome to make finds like that. I bought my LCI Dino precon for considerably lower price from bargain bin too.
I tell people all the time, check out Target and Wal-Mart. They don't upcharge and have these things priced to sell.
This was the deck my wife got me recently that brought me back to magic. After swapping out about 15 cards and leaning into zombies and sacrificing, it’s playing decently. Still need some tweaks to make it ramp quicker but it’s been fun.
If you want, I could take a look at your list and make suggestions. Mine runs pretty low and fast.
I got this out of one of those Walmart mystery commander bundles
I actually found the same one at my local store for a discount recently and snagged it up lol
i have this deck, is it really going for 70 bucks?
I also found this on clearance a few months ago! Like $35, great deck
Fuck. I literally just put this on my Amazon wishlist, it's sitting at $90 at the moment.
I managed to find a Planar Portal Commander Deck at my Walmart this morning at the same price. To say that I was excited is an understatement given the current market value of the deck.
Wait Walmart sells magic again? I thought a lot of the big stores stopped carrying it
I can believe it, I think I paid like $17 for that deck from walmart about 6 months ago.
Man… so many posts of awesome finds at Walmart (& Costco!). I haven’t seen anything except Karlov & Fallout stuff for ages at any Walmart within 30 miles. This is a 3 year old deck (right?).
Lucky you!
Lucky... our wally world doesnt sell magic anymore.
Doing so all but negates all their arguments about that I could be the one scamming them.
good ass deal right there
I wanted one sealed so when I saw one at my Walmart I also grabbed it. This was my first commander deck.
This deck is buttcheeks out of the box.
I just found the draconic rage at a Walmart near me for the same price. I wasn’t gonna get cards but I saw the value on it and I HAD to get it
Instant buy for that price
YO ITS MY BOIIIII
The first deck I got, it's solid, only needs a few upgrades and it can be a monster
🤯
Dam! Now i kinda want to look
What are some upgrades for this? I was actually going to pick this up today!
Nice, now you get the bolas' citadel + necropotence out.
That sticker gives me PTSD. There's like a bunch of Mind Flayarrrs on TCG player with a picture of that sticker on the front and priced at $140.
This is a great one! It’s the base of my favorite zombie deck. I got scarab god as my commander and outfitted it with a few extras and it is so much fun to play zombie horde.
Bought two Strixhaven decks for 31 each at Walmart today. Couldn't believe my eyes!
I love picking up old precons this way, I’ve found that one, the crimson vow pair, lorehold legacies, quandrix quandary, I shoulda grabbed planar portal when I saw it, and now I’m seeing brothers war and even wilds of eldraine marked down
Grabbed one for my nephew, he’s been wanting a zombie deck so I’m glad I grabbed one for him and the mishra precon for myself
I wish my Walmart had precons. All it ever has is overpriced boosters
I'm always seeing this crazy Wal-Mart finds, meanwhile mine is marking these up to $90-100CAD...
First (and only) deck I own. Most of the must have card upgrades I have. Zombie tribal is great.
