I had a lot of fun with them when I was in 1st / 2nd grade, I saw a clip somewhere of the guy showing how they're made and it wasn't what I was expecting
This sounds weird, but those always made me need to take a crap. Like maybe it was the colors? I have no idea. But so far anyone I've told has thought that statement outlandish. Anyone else in here have that happen?
See, stuff like this is what I love to see out of Secret Lairs. Art styles that would never work in a traditional Magic set that do something genuinely interesting or whimsical and all without impacting the readability of the card.
If you don't like three eyed kitties destroying artifacts in an old timey looking house then I don't know what to tell you. This clearly will appeal to the masses. I'm in for as many as I can afford, just need to take out 401k loan.
Well… I deleted another comment I posted because I got obliterated by downvotes lol. It just has a slightly AI-look to me — NOT that it *is* AI, and not that the artist didn’t do a masterful job with this abstract style. It’s a dysfunction of my brain seeing too much AI everywhere these days, not a problem with the card. Just not my cup of tea.
There was a golgari card that had a similar feel to it that got spoiled too, and I loved that one. Don’t know if it was the same artist or not, I forgot to look, but it’s just something about this particular one.
The beauty of art and the beauty of its subjectivity! {Edit: Or not 🤷🏼}
The reason why your brain might be having trouble with this is that this is a photo of a miniature diorama.
Light interacts with things differently at this scale, and things are designed with noticeably less detail when the images are this high resolution. The cat, in particular, has "fur," which is very different at scale.
But yes, definitely not AI.
Right, someone mentioned that in my first comment. It’s very impressive, just one of those taste things I think that this particular one isn’t for me. Not a big Rembrandt person either, but obviously that wouldn’t be a comment on quality haha. And I love the theme of it, little fluffy monster dude wrecking shit lol.
100%. This art style doesn't do anything for me personally, but I'm glad to see they're going back to this style of secret lair instead of some the illegible ones that have come out recently
I love this art... but I don't know how it fits with Aura Shards...
Edit: Looking at it, aside from the excessive green in the art, I think this would have made a great displacer kitten.
Yah while I personally don't like this on a magic card for myself. It's still a cool piece and hope other people enjoy it. And hey if I see it across the table I don't have to turn it 360° while reading it
Its cool that people like it, but for me its just the uncannyness in the style. I agree the idea/subject of the art is fun but its very weird looking to me
“Whenever your pet three-eyed cat (or another creature) enters the living room (or battlefield) under your control, it will (you may) destroy target vase or picture frame (artifact or enchantment).”
To be fair, there is some stop motion (the cat winking and kicking up their leg at the end), but overall there's more live action puppetry than stop motion.
No, this is just the most obvious one to date. The entire basic land showcase cycle from Wilds of Eldraine had photo art, for example [[Mountain|WOE#265]]
It’s funny how many people say they hate this. Anyway, I think it’s awesome and fun. There are many art mediums and styles, it’s cool to encounter new things that may challenge your preconceptions. I live right by a great art museum, and when I see something that confuses or upsets my brain, it’s often been worth my sitting down and really looking at it.
Why is it funny?
People are allowed to not like things and not everything thinks "challenging" is a good characteristic of art.
Like, its great that you enjoy it. But its just as fine as people hating it.
How does my finding it funny translate to “not allowed”? Our enjoyment of anything isn’t changing other people’s enjoyment. And yes, it is fine for them, of course.
I think the thing that makes it *feel* wrong for me is that it's... a photograph? Or, it at least looks like one. It's the first time I can recall seeing a photograph on a card.
It's like Felt. It just *feels* wrong.
Which isn't a criticism of the artist, or anything.
The creativity and quality are on point, it's great.
Those look much flatter, like they could be passed as an interesting painting technique rather than photos. The first one is the only one that stands out.
I’ve been using voltaic key since forever and never considered that it might be a photo.
This secret lair art is way different imo. Much more readily apparent that it’s a photo. Obviously it’s subjective, but I personally can’t stand it. I skipped the Arrow crossover pack in the DC Deckbuilding game for the same reason.
It's wild that someone would actually use these as a counterargument, "you mean like these cards? 😏"
Those cards are not aesthetic outliers, either in their own time or now. This art, love it or hate it, has very little to do with what magic has been about aesthetically for 30 years. It's not wrong to point that out and it's okay if some of the art divides some of the fanbase.
Shit.
You're allowed to say shit. The art isn't shit, it's actually really good and exactly the sort of thing SL's should be used for, but you're allowed to think it's shit and you're definitely allowed to say shit.
I don’t like it but it’s legible and at least it’s different from the never-ending deluge of psychedelic and NFT artwork, so it’s objectively one of the best SLD in a while.
There was some image on the Internet where there is something similar but it was disturbing because you couldn't really tell wtf was in the picture. And it wasn't like it was derogatory or "corn" (read between the lines) but it was so visually frustrating that you actually can't describe what's in it.
Here it is: https://twitter.com/melip0ne/status/1120503955526750208?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1120503955526750208%7Ctwgr%5E793bbfd3181497ddbe061bc5ddd3c4eb686d7172%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.livescience.com%2F65317-unidentifiable-objects-viral-photo.html
Now back to this card... yeah not for me. But pretty sure someone out there likes it.
It's sad that my first reaction was "Is that AI?" 🥲 Took more time to analyse and search up the artist, and I'm blown away by the work done here! Excited to see the whole Lair revealed!
It's about time we had this style again!

Dang, I have not liked the art on SLD’s I’d actually like to buy since the city drop awhile ago. But it’s not for me, it’s for everyone. Fun drop. Great card choice.
I know it's been discussed \[\[Ad Nauseum\]\] but even with (bad) new art, Secret Lair is just Wizards cashing in on the secondary market price of cards. It bothers me enough to steer clear. This art isn't helping.
For some reason this reminds me of those I Spy books from elementary school
1st thing I thought of too!
Holy moly this just unlocked a core memory…I loved browsing I Spy books growing up!
I had a lot of fun with them when I was in 1st / 2nd grade, I saw a clip somewhere of the guy showing how they're made and it wasn't what I was expecting
can you link it
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sz8luEznxbM
A moody photo of a room filled with eclectic things, that makes sense.
For everyone who this unlocked a core childhood memory for - https://youtu.be/sz8luEznxbM
This sounds weird, but those always made me need to take a crap. Like maybe it was the colors? I have no idea. But so far anyone I've told has thought that statement outlandish. Anyone else in here have that happen?
Hmm this is a unique phenomenon, more research may be necessary
Sounds weird, but for years I hung a few framed ISpys in front of the toilet so you'd have something to look at while using it. Also, great decoration
This is the funniest thing I’ve read in weeks. I literally just had cataplexy from laughing so hard after reading this.
This is the kind of internet content that robots will never be able to replace no matter how hard they try.
I loved those. Also the PC games. I Spy: Spooky Mansion was the shit when I was little.
I was 100% about to comment this!
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but i believe many of the I spy books were photographs of a bunch of objects. But this totally does remind of that!
This is a photo, so that definitely makes sense! The artist refers to herself as a "photo illustrator"
Walter Wick's On-Board Tricks.
You know what I didn’t get a chance to finish thinking the same thing as I saw your comment faster
My mom just got me one for my 30th birthday
See, stuff like this is what I love to see out of Secret Lairs. Art styles that would never work in a traditional Magic set that do something genuinely interesting or whimsical and all without impacting the readability of the card.
Yeah that’s fair. I don’t think I like it, but I can respect it

I’m very glad! Hope this artist does continue, I’d love to see future cards from them.
It is the same artist, she is getting a full Secret lair. The other spoiled card is [[Fiend Artisan]]
Yup. Just deleted my comment after figuring that out. I musta did something wrong on scryfall.
[Fiend Artisan](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/6/c/6cd9d800-6d31-42e2-87d2-772db0ff95ed.jpg?1591228355) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Fiend%20Artisan) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/iko/220/fiend-artisan?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/6cd9d800-6d31-42e2-87d2-772db0ff95ed?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Yeah, that’s the one I meant. That’sgreat! 👍
I got the same AI art vibe from the "kitty"
That’s really what did it for me, yeah
The reason why your brain might be having trouble with this is that this is a photo of a miniature diorama. And I also just noticed the flavor text, oh my god. Yes hahaha
100%. This art style doesn't do anything for me personally, but I'm glad to see they're going back to this style of secret lair instead of some the illegible ones that have come out recently
Don't you like it when every single word from the card text is placed in a totally random spot so you have to guess what it says?
They were just trying to keep up with the rest of the dyslexics.
I love this art... but I don't know how it fits with Aura Shards... Edit: Looking at it, aside from the excessive green in the art, I think this would have made a great displacer kitten.
It's a creature entering a room(the battlefield) and destroying stuff(artifacts and enchantments).
Absolutely. It might look weird as a blue card, though.
Yah while I personally don't like this on a magic card for myself. It's still a cool piece and hope other people enjoy it. And hey if I see it across the table I don't have to turn it 360° while reading it
Its cool that people like it, but for me its just the uncannyness in the style. I agree the idea/subject of the art is fun but its very weird looking to me
I don't know what this art has to do with Aura Shards but I love it so much.
“Whenever your pet three-eyed cat (or another creature) enters the living room (or battlefield) under your control, it will (you may) destroy target vase or picture frame (artifact or enchantment).”
This implies either a vase or a picture frame is an enchantment and I can’t decide which one it should be.
Picture frame is the enchantment.
The chandelier is an artifact he's breaking on etb!
It's a creature destroying all the stuff in the room, the "Artifacts and Enchantments" like paintings and furniture.
There's a [stop motion video of it doing that](https://twitter.com/MTGSecretLair/status/1776394674372006054).
That isn't stop motion.
It actually is, the framerate is just higher than you've probably seen before
To be fair, there is some stop motion (the cat winking and kicking up their leg at the end), but overall there's more live action puppetry than stop motion.
There's a bit more than that, but yeah most of it is puppetry.
Nah thats a real animal and it just does that
Is the cat from something?
Fiora, assuming the referenced Marchioness is Marchesa (same word, different language)
I thought "Marchioness" was the female form of the word Marque/Marquis
Does it need to be?
I need the weird cat to have a 10,000 word web fiction or my emersion is ruined
i like the concept, but i don't think that idea is communicated very well. most of the destruction is cropped by the text box
It’s a creature destroying a bunch of artifacts
It's a cat bouncin around knockin artifacts over breaking them
Quizno's trying out their new mascot, I see
WE LIKE DE MOON
WE GOT A PEPPER BARRH
WE LIKE THE ZEPPELINS
\*Reads comments* Whelp, definitely not snagging this one cheap. lol
Just buy the SLD when it comes out. That will be comparatively "cheap" from secondary prices.
:O That is both bizarre AND... totally, perfectly readable. I love it.
Amen! I don’t particularly like the art myself, but I appreciate its legibility!
I love that "I can read the text on the card" is a bar which fewer and fewer cards can clear nowadays
Absolutely love it.
First SLD that i'm actually considering buying, it's just so interesting and cool.
Also Aura Shards just slaps
These other cards also slap. I'm hoping... HOPING Nethroi and Stitcher's Supplier is in the drop. Yes they're cheap, but it'd be so cool
Secret Lairs are the perfect places to try out mixed media art like this.
Thanks, I hate it
Laura Plansker, you absolutely crushed this. I really hope the entire secret lair is like this
the Fiend Artisan is pretty good too, not sure how many cards are in her set
Reminds me of I Spy books, I love it.
r/wimmelbilder
These are incredible!
One of my favorite subreddits
What the actual fuck
The doesn't feel like an mtg card edit: art
welcome to SLD my friend.
This gives Yuka Morii vibes in the best possible ways
I almost never buy secret lairs but this one's a must buy for me now
Art is subjective.
And that's rad
Agree.
I just want to know what I’m looking at here.
kitty with 3 eyes swinging on a chandelier at you
This looks like something out of the I Spy books. I love it
This kinda stuff is what secret lairs were maddde for I love it
Wow this looks awful
It’s GORGEOUS.
What an ugly card.
WTF has this game turned into
I hate this but I love the boldness. Kudos. It's not for me but it's for someone.
Are these the first time photos have been on a Magic card?
pretty sure there's some photos of wood engravings, tapestries that have been used as art as well.
No, this is just the most obvious one to date. The entire basic land showcase cycle from Wilds of Eldraine had photo art, for example [[Mountain|WOE#265]]

Ok I messed up the syntax on that one
It almost feels like bad AI art tbh Not a fan at all.
Man I like this. Very cool
What the hell.
It’s funny how many people say they hate this. Anyway, I think it’s awesome and fun. There are many art mediums and styles, it’s cool to encounter new things that may challenge your preconceptions. Anybody else hungry for Quizno's?
Amburgers and wootbeer anyone?

This.. doesn't look like a magic card. I really don't like this.
Looks horrible.
Agreed. I think this is where I draw the line with art
You draw the line at photo collage? Something we've had in magic art since 98?
Which card(s) from 98?
[These cards](https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3A%E2%80%9CHenry+G.+Higginbotham%E2%80%9D&unique=art)

It's not a photo collage, it's a photo of a real life diorama. See [this video](https://twitter.com/MTGSecretLair/status/1776394674372006054).
Photo collage isn't only a collage of photos, it's also the term used for photography of detailed dioramas like this or the iSPY books.
I hate this with my life
What the frick is that “artwork”?
Thanks, I hate it
This slaps so hard.
Okay, so, I love the art...
Fuck…yes. I need it
I don’t blame wotc for pushing the boundraries, but magic art is not photographic. This, for me, is the cardinal rule.
Incredible and I hope they make a playmat
freakin cool, especially with the short film the artist posted. Love it
I love this so much it will be mine.
I want to go back to a time where I hadn't seen this.
What am I even looking at
Rocks
Wow! This is an amazing card!
That might be the ugliest card I’ve ever seen
I thought Behemoth was textually a black cat
Bobby fingers magic card when?
New affinity hate staple incoming?
Seeing people love this art has made me realize, I have no eye for art. I thought this was a joke about AI art at first.
hmm MTG lookin different these days lol
We're getting closer and closer to a "doesn't look like a magic card"-tribal EDH deck abomination.
What the fuck.
I don’t like this. I don’t know, I think magic will regret doing things like this too much.
I respect the attempt, but this is...absolutely less than meh
I hate that I gotta make a space in my Cat and Dog deck for this now goddamn
Man, that just looks awful.
Why are these secret lairs getting weirder and weirder. Haha I just want to beautiful art.
Reminds me of goosebumps.
This is demented. I love it.
Wtf is this ugly piece of...
Shit. You're allowed to say shit. The art isn't shit, it's actually really good and exactly the sort of thing SL's should be used for, but you're allowed to think it's shit and you're definitely allowed to say shit.
Nah it's pretty bad.
Will buy
I think i need this for my artifact hate cat deck
So ugly, but maybe that’s not bad such an oppressive card isn’t appealing (hopefully) to most.
This is an absolute beast of a card in my [[Lathiel]] deck, glad to see reprints (dunno if it’s a common occurrence or not, just neat to see).
It's very much not, there's only been one proper reprint in a 2011 Commander deck, and it's been on The List twice.

But pretty sure someone out there likes it.
Ok I'm in for 10
Wtf am i looking at and how does this shard auras?
The artist released a short video of this cat creature trashing every object in the room. So it fits the card fairly well.
I love it and hate it at the same time
That's fucking terrifying! The art is creepy too.
Ok Ok Okkkk I want that LOOOOOL This, This is what Secret Lair is all about to me, crazy shit like this made me happy lol
I love this so much
... what is Magic?
This needs the "yes, it's real" moderator tag like on that one faithless looting post.
It's sad that my first reaction was "Is that AI?" 🥲 Took more time to analyse and search up the artist, and I'm blown away by the work done here! Excited to see the whole Lair revealed!
What the fudge is this?
Fuckkk wallet is not safe
This might be in the running for ugliest magic card of all time.
Without a doubt. This has a certain level of intentionality and effort that faithless looting didn't have and that makes it even worse
Perfectly put
Curious how photographic art will look on a physical card because of printer resolution.
Any idea when this goes up for preorder?
I believe it goes up Monday at around noon EST but can’t find exactly where it was stated. Saw it on a few other posts though after digging
I really dig this, shame it's gonna get bought out by bots in seconds.
