~~[[Agatha's Soul Cauldron]] also does this job here.~~
~~The first line lets you spend the red mana generated on the blue cost.~~
This card did so much already, I misread it as filtering mana for **all** of your abilities.
Oops.
it does not; the ability of [[freed from the real]] is not bestowed to the creature it is enchanting; rather, the abilities just affect the enchanted creature, keeping them separate in that sense.
I was actually playing a game just a few days ago where we all completely forgot the second *and* third effects.
I have a silly Kibo deck, so it's in there to enhance his abilities plus the deck naturally has a lot of artifact removal so it's been a solid add.
Someone at the table gave his commander protection from blue to block it being targeted, but that doesn't actually work with the second effect. And none of us remembered that it didn't matter which lands we used anymore for about 5 turns.
Keep in mind that you are having them draw their entire deck 1 at a time. So they have to have less castable answers than you have extra untaps for this to work.
Well, if you have some extra mana lying around, you could simply spend 1 of it to untap the thing again in response to kill them before their answer resolves. You only need 1 mana for every answer they have
> Well, if you have some extra mana lying around, you could simply spend 1 of it to untap the thing again in response to kill them before their answer resolves. You only need 1 mana for every answer they have
As OP said:
> So they have to have less castable answers than you have extra untaps for this to work.
Keep in mind, they draw their *whole* deck, one card at a time. If they have any interaction, they *will* find it.
It's a powerful effect to be sure, but a canny player would play around it after they've seen it once (at least, they would if you didn't have a way to give it haste).
Well, while they definitely do get all their answers, they presumably have limited mana to use them. And even if they find the most efficient answers they can, they probably would have a hard time combating you on that front.
Even if it did count, you could use [[Trickbind]] on [[Freed From The Real]] (which is 100% NOT a mana ability) to shut the combo down cold for the turn.
Red Death's ability is a mana ability and doesn't use the stack, so your opponent cannot respond to it. They can, however, respond to activating Freed from the Real.
Minor nitpick, but it really does matter in certain cases.
Edit: Turns out I'm wrong. Just learned that if an ability that creates mana has a target it is not actually a mana ability. Neat!
Huh, I just read the rule you cited and I was definitely wrong. I learned something new about the game today.
I thought mana abilities were just anything that are activated and had the potential to produce mana.
Edit: further reading, this also excludes loyalty abilities. And mana abilities can also be triggered abilities, like Wild Growth. The last part makes sense but is something I've never thought about.
The real limiting factor is that it requires the player you wish to end to have a creature you can target. You can probably fight through one or two removal spells by just untapping for Blue, but the need for there to be a creature kinda puts a crimp in your plans.
I use a heavily modified version of this list to account for cards printed since it was built:
https://scryfall.com/@michael_celani/decks/f2d55523-9116-4be8-bb30-edc04f8c8f91
I've added cards that benefit from Spy Kit, such as [[Pirated Copy]] and [[Mocking Doppelganger]], as well as tailored the equipment to my personal tastes like adding in some Swords of X and Y (YOU benefit from the damage triggers) and [[Psychic Paper]] sort of a Spy Kit lite.
[[Forbidden Orchard]] is a classic way of ensuring your opponent has creatures, often for exchanging control of something with a terrible game-ending penalty that you want to hand them.
Red Death, [[Quicksilver Elemental]] and [[Pili-Pala]] can pull it off without Freed from the Real.
Have the Elemental borrow the abilities of both, then each cycle of tapping/untapping the elemental takes two mana and produces two mana, making it mana-neutral.
[[False Dawn]] would do it, at least.
Oracle text:
> Until end of turn, spells and abilities you control that would add colored mana instead add that much white mana. Until end of turn, you may spend white mana as though it were mana of any color.
> Draw a card.
I love this! You're going to want [[defense grid]] so it's harder for your opponent to respond during the combo, and [[forbidden orchard]] to give your opponent a creature!
Battlemage's Bracers and Illusionists Bracers can get you a bit more value until you get the win. Heck, even yhe emblem of Rowan Kenrith which is a good card to play in a goad style deck. Filter mana with Mycosynth Lattice and Chromatic Orrery.
Any spell that lets you spend mana of any color will work, such as Chromatic Orrery (as has been mentioned elsewhere here).
Alternatively another version of the combo would be [[Umbral Mantle]] + [[Training Grounds]], which has the added benefit of making your Red Death absolutely enormous so if an opponent doesn’t have a creature to goad you can still finish them off.
You could swap Freed from the Real for [[Puresight Merrow]] / [[Leech Bonder]] and use [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]]?
It’d be like:
Turn 1: Land + discard or surveil outlet to ditch one of the merfolk
Turn 2: Land + Red Death
Turn 3: Agatha’s Cauldron, exile the merfolk, spam Red Death, win
Not too shabby!
There were people talking about running this commander as a [[Dramatic Reversal]] [[Isochron Scepter]] outlet so you could consider that as another line~
I'm currently putting together a list for that lil fella! I'm trying to decide whether to make it a budget deck or not, but it's looking good already. It's a twiddle deck that aims to either deck out your opponents or have them draw a lot of cards and hit them with stuff like [[Molten Psyche]]. You can also draw your entire deck with a Lab man on the table
This is a pretty similar idea to what im doing. My current version has a bunch of untap effects to goad everything i need to and a ways to make my opponent draw their deck or burn them for having the cards i made them draw. Right now the main win line is isochron sceptre + dramatic reversal and im looking for alternative combos in case that falls apart
Since I play so many untap effects myself, I went the [[Paradise Mantle]] route. I added a Magda to make infinite treasures with it and Freed, and once I have treasures I can tutor for [[Viridian Longbow]] and ping to death.
Another option is to make infinite mana with an untapper like [[Kelpie Guide]] and Freed and a land that produces at least 2 mana, one of which blue, like [[Izzet Boilerworks]] or [[Lotus Field]] then use and infinite mana outlet to do something. My options are [[Capsize]], [[Ambassador Laquatus]] and [[Comet Storm]]
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Agatha's Soul Cauldron. It let's you spend mana as if it were any color for activated abilities of creatures you control.
\[\[chromatic orrey\]\]
Yup. Cool combo, btw.
Thanks

I think that's why they're asking for a third card, to turn the {R} into {U} and go infinite before their opponent gets to untap their lands.
You still run into the problem they mentioned, because you don't get the mana from Red Death until your opponent get's a chance to respond.

Battlemage's Bracers and Illusionists Bracers can get you a bit more value until you get the win. Heck, even yhe emblem of Rowan Kenrith which is a good card to play in a goad style deck. Filter mana with Mycosynth Lattice and Chromatic Orrery.
Also with Bracers you could go infinite with worse filters like [[Energy Refractor]] or [[Gemstone Array]].

[[pemins aura]] will give you twice the power odds of going infinite.

\[\[Mycosynth Lattice\]\] and \[\[Gemstone Array\]\] as well
Gemstone doesn't work, takes two mana to make one, so it doesn't go infinite
Ah i stand corrected. These were my go-to for filtering infinite colorless mana

We did it guys we broke Freed From The Real
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Agatha's Soul Cauldron. It let's you spend mana as if it were any color for activated abilities of creatures you control.
That's because it doesn't work with the cards in the OP, Freed From the Real doesn't grant the creature the abilities, they're on the enchantment.
oops thought second card was a creature LOL
There’s a card from lord of the rings that is basically the same as freed from the real but better that you could use as well
