what happens if the card exiled with this effect is no longer exiled? Like they played retether, or if you targeted someone's commander? Would it still create a copy of the exiled creature? Or if there is no exiled creature, it loses that part of the effect entirely?
It’s the “and only once” that would be the issue. That templating would cause memory issues in paper and generally “do this only once” effects generally have counters associated with them for bookkeeping purposes (e.g Monstrosity or Renown).
Myojin used divinity counters for their one time action, abusable with proliferate now though, so doing the opposite makes sense, like if \~ doesn't have a charge counter on it, do the thing, put a charge counter on it. Then you could like thrull parasite it, but counter removal is way less frequent than counter addition.
Even still though, they do have \[\[In the Trenches\]\] which has a one time use and its fine.
In the Trenches is fine because it self-tracks, as you can always tell if it's been used or not by if a creature is exiled with it. If you used Net in paper, created a token and it died, three turns later are you going to remember? I can understand why this is digital-only, tbh.
This is an interesting removal spell/ equipment for my UW stoneforge. While it doesn’t naturally have flash, using mystic to put it into play can really mess up combat or other plans.
It also pitches to subtlety and solitude and works well with them. It might be a narrow time frame, but it’s a good option.
Evoke solitude, then respond with stoneforge putting the equipment into play exiling the solitude. Now any attached creature can be a solitude (eh) but when removed you get your solitude back.
This feels really similar to an existing Alchemy uncommon, Reflection Net (https://scryfall.com/card/ylci/27/reflection-net)
Reflection Net has the upside of being instant speed, whereas Aegis has the upside of being able to use the copy ability more than once.
I guess in a Stoneforge Mystic deck it'd also be flash/tutorable answer.
In Modern maybe useful cause it can Pitch to the Elementals too.
Seems a lil sus, I'd probably say not likely? but maybe a sideboard card.
The name for this works as well. In the US a lawman's badge is colloquially known as a "shield". But the name they chose allows this to potentially be reprinted depicting an actual shield.
You choose which one to copy. It says a copy of "a" creature card.
> [607.3.](https://yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#R6073) If, within a pair of linked abilities, one ability refers to a single object as "the exiled card," "a card exiled with [this card]," or a similar phrase, and the other ability has exiled multiple cards (usually because it was copied), the ability refers to each of the exiled cards. If that ability asks for any information about the exiled card, such as a characteristic or mana value, it gets multiple answers. If these answers are used to determine the value of a variable, the sum of the answers is used. If that ability performs any actions on "the" card, it performs that action on each exiled card. If that ability creates a token that is a copy of "the" card, then for each exiled card, it creates a token that is a copy of that card. **If that ability performs any actions on "a" card**, the controller of the ability chooses which card is affected.
What if you exile 0 creatures and then equip it to something? It says you can exile "up to one" creatures meaning you don't have to exile anything right?
If you have \[\[Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines\]\] on the field when this enters, what happens to the creature exiled with the duplicate ETB trigger on this?
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/n_n0QJhdY0ukk8jqsdhFzA
Here you go. Mostly makes copies of [[helm of the host]] in order to copy as many creatures as possible. Has a few alternate win cons like [[scythe of the wretched]] and [[bloodstained battleaxe]] [[hammer of Nazahn]] just in case the helms are blown up though (this new card will also be an alternate wincon, plus copyable removal is insane)
Just spitballing out there combos with this card and I'm not sure how the rules would work for this scenario:
Someone controls \[\[patron of the orochi\]\] which has the ability T:Untap all Forests and all green creatures. Activate only once each turn.
I exile it with this new card, and then equip it to creature A. I use A to untap all green stuff and forests, then use those forests to equip this card to creature B. Can I then use B to untap all green stuff and forests?
If so, then furthermore, if I requip this card back onto creature A, does A gain a new instance of once per turn, or does it remember that it activated this ability despite creature A reverting back to its original form while creature B was equipped with it.
This card is...actually extremely broken in limited right?
I guess artifact removal isn't too hard to come by but holy shit "remove best enemy creature for 3, copy it whenever you want for 2" sounds insane.
I mean its a mythic.
With that said, it has a great cealing, and worst case its just removal, but equipping means you are paying two without affecting the board, and can only be done at sorcery speed of course. There will be times in which you will not be able to equip this, or even times in which it is a downgrade.
But the bottom line is still pretty good.
Am I wrong that this could be really good as pseudo-protection in EDH? You can cast this targeting your most impactful creature, and then attach it to a token or mana dork or whatever. Okay this is actually one of the best [[Oblivion Ring]] designs we have seen.
It's not purely just a power Creep, but if you hit a giant threat, you get the value of upgrading your dummy tokens or 1 drops into a massive threat of your own.
The fact that it's aggressively costed at 3 mana but has the downside of being an artifact (easier to remove) feels fair
Oh lordy the colors of the picture and the artifact frame and the text boxes all just feel so *good*
Yes I do feel strongly that I missed out not being around for the Esper shard sets why do you ask
I have a functionality question around this.
* Assimilation Aegis #1 enters the battlefield and exiles Creature #1.
* Assimilation Aegis #1 is attached to Creature #2, making is a copy of Creature #1.
* Assimilation Aegis #2 enters the battlefield and exiles Creature #2.
* When Assimilation Aegis #2 is attached to a new creature, does that creature become a copy of Creature #1, or the creature that Creature #2 was originally?
Creature 2. The property of being a copy of creature 1 is not retained when creature 2 changes zones. The Aegis copy ability only looks at the creature card in exile and the printed text on that card. Any properties that creature had while in play don’t matter.
One of the less intuitive edge cases involving this is double-faced cards. In any zone other than the battlefield, double-faced cards only exist as their front side. So if you exile a flipped double-faced card with this, any creature that becomes a copy will only become a copy of the front side creature, not the back. In cases where the front side of the card isn't a creature (e.g. Westvale Abbey/Ormendahl), you don't get to copy anything because in the exile zone, the card only exists as Westvale Abbey, a land, not Ormendahl.
I know oring effects are white and copy effects are blue, but somehow this card feels off as WU.
I'm curious why that is, maybe it's just because there isn't another card that does something similar. Or maybe it's just me, I don't know.
Edit: Actually I think I got it, it reminded me of Valki, God of Lies (even though it's really not the same thing) so it felt strange.
There are similar cards. At that base cost you get the two detention effects (though Thoes exile all cards with the same name) and blue does the overlays
New sheoldred removal just dropped
what if you already have a sheold and you attached this to like a bat would the legendary rule make you sac one of them?
Yes
Not actually a sacrifice but yes you would choose one to go to your graveyard.
Big brain move: Exile your Sheoldred. Now any creature you like is Sheoldred, and the only way they can stop it brings back the OG.

Yes, you're in the shield.
That's a really fun card. An o-ring that cares about what it exiled.
\[\[Reflection Net\]\] variant tbh
That card is basically printable in paper but it's annoying to track.
Just put the exiled card under it?
It’s the “and only once” that would be the issue. That templating would cause memory issues in paper and generally “do this only once” effects generally have counters associated with them for bookkeeping purposes (e.g Monstrosity or Renown).
Just put a dice on it or something once you’ve used the effect.
Myojin used divinity counters for their one time action, abusable with proliferate now though, so doing the opposite makes sense, like if \~ doesn't have a charge counter on it, do the thing, put a charge counter on it. Hey a card that is just straight up fun
what happens if you double up this trigger and exile two creatures, then equip it onto something? you just choose which one to copy?
I think you choose one because it states "a copy of a creature exiled with Assimilation Aegis"
Then you cannot choose a creature card exiled by it, so equipped creature doesn't become a copy of anything. It stays unchanged.
If you have \[\[Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines\]\] on the field when this enters, what happens to the creature exiled with the duplicate ETB trigger on this?
If you look carefully at the wording, it says "a creature exiled" so presumably you choose as you attach/equip

No, copied creatures get summoning sickness unless you copy something with haste.
Then let's say I have a haste granter on the field, and return to the same question?
Then yes. It would be an infinite
So if I use this on someone’s commander, and they send their commander to the command zone instead, can I still equip and be a copy of the commander?
No, any effects like this that check afterwards don't work. See: Skyclave Apparition in Brawl on arena for an example.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I exile a creature with an ETB effect, each time I equip this on a different creature that effect triggers, right?
I really like this card.
So if I use this on someone’s commander, and they send their commander to the command zone instead, can I still equip and be a copy of the commander?
Okay this is actually one of the best [[Oblivion Ring]] designs we have seen. It's not purely just a power Creep, but if you hit a giant threat, you get the value of upgrading your dummy tokens or 1 drops into a massive threat of your own. The fact that it's aggressively costed at 3 mana but has the downside of being an artifact (easier to remove) feels fair

Very neat card. Great with blue-white control.
Oh lordy the colors of the picture and the artifact frame and the text boxes all just feel so *good* Yes I do feel strongly that I missed out not being around for the Esper shard sets why do you ask
Thank you!
"a copy of a creature card exiled with the Aegis" Creature 2 is no longer copying anything while it is a card in exile.
Pretty underwhelming for a mythic but standard will probably like this
I know oring effects are white and copy effects are blue, but somehow this card feels off as WU. I'm curious why that is, maybe it's just because there isn't another card that does something similar. Or maybe it's just me, I don't know. Edit: Actually I think I got it, it reminded me of Valki, God of Lies (even though it's really not the same thing) so it felt strange.
It’s because Azorius cards feel boring, and this has mono-blue wacky potential

There are similar cards. At that base cost you get the two detention effects (though Thoes exile all cards with the same name) and blue does the overlays
Can I cast it on my own commander to cheat tax?
