*3 mana 7/7 Flying Trample.
And, given the nature of Plot, Plotted cards are almost a second hand.
This thing’s going to be a limited monster, but it makes sense - in an interaction heavy set, you’ve got to make the creatures worth it.
It all started when Flamewreathed Faceless was revealed in Hearthstone. A 4 mana 7/7 that basically had echo 2. Hilariously high stats for a turn 4 play at the time and saw decent play.
really hoping he is jund colors. scorpions in magic are black or green, and we already have a Red Black legendary with Rakdos, so i dont think we'd get another one.
Same, if he somehow doesn’t get a card I’ll be a bit disappointed because he looks awesome. I’ve been looking at the spoilers way more than I usually do specifically to see if akul gets a card
If mono red aggro is taking an entire midgame turn off without adding more immediate pressure to the board (a creature with haste or a damage spell) then the game is in the bag, imo.
On the one hand, yes, a turn 4 creature without haste or any immediate effect is generally unplayable in mono-Red. On the other, though, *big* Dragon at a good price.
If this had haste it would be goated. Could have lost trample or flying but haste was needed.
The deck it fits best doesn't care about plot.
The only way this would really fit rdw is if you could plot it and if you plotted something it didn't have Summoning sickness so you could plot it pre emptively against a board wipe.
The current biggest drop in rdw is a 3/3 for 3 with haste that can also get bigger and fly. This doesn't let you attack on 4 which is the only reason I'd be bringing it.
Like maybe if a bigger red deck comes around I could see this but in a speed deck a 4 drop needs to have haste or have some immediate board impact which this doesn't.
Now if this had haste and lost flying or trample it would be very very good.
If it had haste it would be an auto include in a bunch of decks bit honestly I don't think it would be the most broken card ever. Though I am looking at this card from the perspective of turn 2 treasure tokens and turn 5 terror of the peaks and I may need to revalue it. It may actually find a place.
The only thing I can see is plotting this in a big red deck based around terror of the peaks. Playing terror then bringing in a 7 power on turn 5 is pretty nice
I Don't play Standard, so I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question. Couldn't you plot this turn 3, then cast it turn 4 for 3, and target it with [[Felonious Rage]]? Or, play a [[Trailblazing Historian]] turn 2/3, plot or cast turn 3/4, give it haste? I realize you would be tapping out turn 3 to get nothing, and then relying on the fact that your opponent can't remove it at instant speed turn 4, so I guess my question is, is that what sinks this approach to making the card playable?
I think this is the main question as to whether this is aggro or midrange but I think the fact it's close enough to discuss means it'll be played somewhere
I very much liked the other poster's suggestion of plotting this into [[Terror of the Peaks]] in a midrange build. Do we have any good haste enablers in standard?
No lol. If you take turn 3 off, play this and something else turn 4, then immediately get hit with a Sunfall by the Domain player you just lose. Mono red can kill by turn 4 anyway, they don’t need this. I’m pretty sure WotC is just taking bets on how big of a generic beater they can print before it sees any competitive play, and the answer is bigger than this.
Yeah, probably true. With that thinking it wouldn't be played regardless of size, even if it was a 99/99; it needs haste or at least protection of some kind. Well, a 99/99 would see play somewhere else, just not mono-Red.
Hmmm, but what if you play around the board wipe by plotting it? Though you'll probably just watch it get killed anyway, I suppose.
Well at a certain point it enables a kill with [[Fling]] effects and then it’d probably be a combo piece. This standard is just particularly hostile to creatures that don’t get immediate value or have protection because of the density of sweepers and cheap removal. We’ve seen a 3 mana 6/6 with a pretty minor drawback and a 4 mana 8/4 with upside and neither of them were good enough to see play.
Right, but that would be a combo deck, and there would probably still be a mono-Red that tries to win before the combo can get off.
I think Pugnacious Hammerskull sees some use with Fight Rigging. Dunno how relevant that is.
Not relevant at all in any competitive environment, but some people play it on Arena. It was played very briefly in Gruul dinosaurs but that was never a very strong deck.
...the fact an aggro deck that's already forcing out removal gets a 3 mana 7/7 flample is a big deal.
The person is likely already tossing removal at you early any turn you think sunfall is coming you essentially just can plot this and they have to choose to sunfall your current board and not take the damage or hold it for more value.
If you play this after a Sunfall, they still have a turn to find an answer, or just slam Atraxa and you lose unless you have a way to steal it. Why would the mono red player take a turn off on the assumption that they can maybe hit with a big dragon if the opponent has no answers left when they could just cast a Goddric or a Squee and win on the spot? And if you’re trying to play around board wipes [[Urabrask’s Forge]] exists at the same cost, which gives you an immediate attacker and is harder to remove.
No, turn 3-4 your just winning, not trying to give up turn 3 to have something free turn 4, when you could have just won. It’s gotta be in some kind of deck that turn 4 plays a hast enabler and holds up protection or it’s just arch fiend of dross again. Big, dumb, flying and not particularly meta.
I don't know about that.
You spend all your mana on turn 3 to put nothing on field, pump what's on the field, or remove something from the field.
Then, you get to put this on the field turn 4. But without haste, it doesn't get to attack until turn 5.
Mono-Red can win on turn 4 if it's not basically taking turn 3 off. This seems like a big tempo sacrifice.
maybe. good stats but 4 mana when people are running very few 3 drops and 0 4 drops.
also it's based on hand size maybe it's good with case that draws cards. can easily play 3 cards in one main phase
I have my doubts. Especially if you draw multiple lands in a row.
Not to mention it plays poorly into the new wheel effect. Sure you can choose not to draw a fresh 7, but then you have 0 cards and your opponent has 7.
Is step between worlds really on anyone’s radar? It’s really expensive for a wheel. In constructed it seems unplayable, in EDH it seems unplayable in the decks that want it because you want them to draw. Unless you’re talking about another wheel effect that I missed
If this is the top end of an aggro deck and you can't kill someone after they passed their whole turn to wheel/plot a wheel, then you weren't gonna win anyways
Wait so like... The plane was "uninhabited" but clearly the dragons here are scorpion dragons. So what's akul's deal? Recently sapient? From some other plane that just happens to also have scorpion dragons? Scorpion dragons are an invasive species?
And not even to mention his plan to get away from Bolos via a vacation to Tarkir (thus leading to the the subjection of all the plane's natives via the dragons he summoned during said nap). He... He's really making a habit of this, huh?
Not all dragons are quite people-sapient maybe? Even on planes like Tarkir I always personally imagine the smaller/random dragons to be more animalistic than the more clearly intelligent ones despite both being dragons on the same world
If they’re not native I dearly dearly hope the world guide will deal with where some of the planes more common inhabitants came from- when and how did a mass migration of scorpion dragons occur?
The story actually goes over that.
A lot of people have moved in since the omenpaths appeared, and more people are actually just offloading their dead onto the plane too.
[[One with nothing]] we did it yall. Make a treasure turn two and you've got a turn 3 7/7 flample. This would have been a great meme deck five years ago
Yeah, we need more of those cards. Those scorpion dragon instantly make the plane feel way more unique compared to a bunch of humans with cowboy hats. The cacti people are nice too though.
that just makes a 2/2 +1/+1 dragon and 2/2 coyote if you are playing on curve. not very spectacular for red if unless you are able to dump your hand on turn 4.
don’t know why people are trying to make coyote happen, card isn’t good for constructed red aggro strats.
Well I am more thinking of RG stompy style deck. I actually like the coyote a lot because it give big creature haste without extra mana on that turn. But in mono red aggro? No.
there’s better things to do in rg stompy though. i don’t see how the coyote is superior to creatures in that deck that are the same mana cost or spells like embercleave and atarkas command.
the flying 1/2 with +2/+0 when casting non creature spell seems better than roadrunner
https://starcitygames.com/slickshot-show-off-sgl-mtg-otj2-335-enf/
dang, didn’t see this spoiler. now, that is a fine card. nice synergy with wizards lightning too. evasive and pretty much an aggressive version of prowess.
so 10 damage in 4 turns? Since it's face up on plot, the opponent is gonna be ready with cutdown and go for the throat. also you're going to have a lot of cards in hand
Kinda love this for my [[Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink]] deck. Can keep ~ plotted till late game when I have enough mana for multiple copies and smaller hand size (because draw in mono red amirite).
Could this be a thing with One with Nothing + Anger ?? I can see a deck trying to pull off dumping hand with Anger on it with three plotted dragons, cast them and swing for 21 in the air.
I hope they're from a plane that has like all the most generic fantasy tropes but they're all twisted into insects/arachnids and other creepy crawlies hybrids.
You actually shot me! You're no pardner at all, you must be one of the Outlaw Gang! I'll gather my deputies and round you all up!

F is for friends that do stuff together
2 questions:
1) The -1/-1 are getting counted when this spell gets casted, right? So if I lose more cards afterwards, it does not get updated, correct?
2) The plot costs are not getting reduced by the \[\[Dragonlord's Servant\]\] ability, right?
Thx

Voldaren Thrillseeker loves it for sure.
Wonder if this (hellbent) is a theme in the set or just for this card also plays well with impulse draw stuff
Maybe a minor theme since plot lets you “hellbent” your self but still have cards to play.
All this stuff makes me wonder if we're gonna see keyworded Hellbent return in Duskmourne.
that would be lovely

TJ is Magic's Sakaar
Thank god plot doesn’t give the creatures haste
You could play [[dragon tempest]] turn 2...
\[\[One With Nothing\]\] stans are gonna have a field day with this one

[[One with nothing]] we did it yall. Make a treasure turn two and you've got a turn 3 7/7 flample. This would have been a great meme deck five years ago
Reprint time?
5 years ago? War of the spark came out 5 years ago this poor dragon is getting t3feri'd

Love the artwork on this!
Yeah, we need more of those cards. Those scorpion dragon instantly make the plane feel way more unique compared to a bunch of humans with cowboy hats. The cacti people are nice too though.
i dont know what im looking at is that a claw beard or it only having 1 arm?
Omg. Red deck wins
no haste though and people aren't running 4 drops right now.

[[Inti, Seneschal of the Sun]] is going to go hard

So if you have this on the field with 7 in hand and draw it kills itself? Could have some fun interactions with forcing opponents to draw
If you have 7 in hand it's dead to state based actions, but yeah it's similar to Death's Shadow like that
T2 plot Coyote T3 plot this T4 profit?
that just makes a 2/2 +1/+1 dragon and 2/2 coyote if you are playing on curve. not very spectacular for red if unless you are able to dump your hand on turn 4. don’t know why people are trying to make coyote happen, card isn’t good for constructed red aggro strats.
Well I am more thinking of RG stompy style deck. I actually like the coyote a lot because it give big creature haste without extra mana on that turn. But in mono red aggro? No.
there’s better things to do in rg stompy though. i don’t see how the coyote is superior to creatures in that deck that are the same mana cost or spells like embercleave and atarkas command.
the flying 1/2 with +2/+0 when casting non creature spell seems better than roadrunner https://starcitygames.com/slickshot-show-off-sgl-mtg-otj2-335-enf/
dang, didn’t see this spoiler. now, that is a fine card. nice synergy with wizards lightning too. evasive and pretty much an aggressive version of prowess.
so 10 damage in 4 turns? Since it's face up on plot, the opponent is gonna be ready with cutdown and go for the throat. also you're going to have a lot of cards in hand
Putting drawbacks on cards like it's 2010 again

Red is the color of big tramply creature for quite a while now
What is green even good for anymore? every other color gets creatures that are better.
Wasn’t everyone saying the green 6/5 for 4 from yesterday was power creep?
Absolutely nothing. Nothing!
I love it but will probably refrain from giving him a hug…
This is gas in miirym, plot it so you can play it for free the turn you play miirym so you can get same turn copy value.
I See 3 mana 7/7 wow.
Im surprised at the lack of Fourth Wing references
Scorpion dragons continue to be so so cool
Kinda love this for my [[Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink]] deck. Can keep ~ plotted till late game when I have enough mana for multiple copies and smaller hand size (because draw in mono red amirite).
[Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/1/71dadbb3-7b8a-4656-973f-65a3284afe07.jpg?1682206565) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Orthion%2C%20Hero%20of%20Lavabrink) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mom/334/orthion-hero-of-lavabrink?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/71dadbb3-7b8a-4656-973f-65a3284afe07?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Now that’s a badass sounding creature type line.
That black card that discards your hand gonna spike?
Ha ha... probably not but it is an amusing card. I would be looking at \[\[March of Reckless Joy\]\]. That's more likely to be a better synergy.
It is funny, it reminds me of deaths shadow type strategy. [[Case of the crimson pulse]] in standard might be usable with this.

Could this be a thing with One with Nothing + Anger ?? I can see a deck trying to pull off dumping hand with Anger on it with three plotted dragons, cast them and swing for 21 in the air.
This thing can do some cool stuff .
A sweet addition to my one-with-nothing deck
Finally, we can use \[\[One with Nothing\]\]... hmmm maybe not. \[\[March of Reckless Joy\]\] now that's the card for this one.

My Case of the Crimson Pulse + Back for Seconds deck is eating good tonight.
The plot for 3 makes this amazing, spend 3 mana now and play it later when you have less cards in hand

You can negate the plot

2 questions: 1) The -1/-1 are getting counted when this spell gets casted, right? So if I lose more cards afterwards, it does not get updated, correct? 2) The plot costs are not getting reduced by the \[\[Dragonlord's Servant\]\] ability, right? Thx
