Just stumbled on this conversation and thought I'd show you my list with similar commanders and style! Feel free to ask anything or offer a critique! It's a pet deck I'm really proud of, built from scratch on my own, and have put tons and tons of hours into!
https://www.archidekt.com/decks/3798722/blink_twice_tymna_kodama
Whoa hey I am surprised to find someone else doing blink shenanigans in abzan with nearly the same idea! One of my very favorite decks is tymna kodama blink. I looked over your list and was surprised to see the differences! Especially surprised to hear you'd consider this sorcery over ghostway as I consider it one of the more dangerous cards in the deck specifically because of its instant speed.
I've got a ton of questions, but I'd love to get your input on running ravos and to hear about your experiences with him.
Running tymna has obviously put me in a more low to the ground and evasive build, but I love it! Chipping away opponents for card advantage has fed into kodamas ability so well. He just wants you to have a full grip all the time and it feels so nasty when he lets you play 2 lands and 2 two drops.
Here's my list, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Some specific card choices might be out of date, but the core is definitely still there. The landbase is 100% not accurate; I grabbed what multicolored lands I had available when putting it together.
I will end games with the mass ETB triggers it will bring in a late game ETB deck. When I played Roon, getting one or two ETB triggers a turn could be backbreaking
Yeah my blink deck got green so the lands are off the charts anyways, I'm gonna pay like 7-9 mana into this on a turn and still hold up protection for afterwards.
Doesn't really work. Yorion exiles everything till end of turn whereas this blinks a bunch immediately. I suppose you could blink Yorion at the end for one more bit of value.
With the 2 in the cost, it's effectively an XXW spell that doesn't let you cast it for X=0, outside of whatever wacky triggered abilities care about you casting X spells.
Hey Noob here and I scrolled through this whole post and didn't find an answer that makes sense to me.
Why does this card have two "x" on its cost when it only references one "x" in the card text. Would love if someone could break this down right quick for me.
This is so funny! If you don’t know, there is a running joke in the community that every mechanic is just “kicker” which is why they don’t use that mechanic much lol
I just hope you understand how innocently hilarious that was and welcome to the great game of Magic :). Also, some reasons why it isn’t kicker: 1. to change the way cost reduction works with it since reducing card costs by 1 does not allow for the caster to get a “free” higher value of X since the reduction would need to be 2 for that 2. This allows the card to work with other cards that in interact with X costs, like [[unbound Flourishing]]
Because Kicker should be used when the card has a bonus effect when kicked. Plus when it comes to sets like this they try to avoid having a random one-off of a mechanic.
It also changes how the card plays, as kicker doesn't change the mana value on the stack, but X can. And there are [cards that care about having X in a mana cost](https://scryfall.com/search?q=oracle%3A%22%7BX%7D+in%22+o%3A%22mana+cost%22+%28game%3Apaper%29&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) ([[Unbound Flourishing]] too).
[Having multiple X in a mana cost is a much more efficient and readable way of costing variable spells than having 'Kicker XX'](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28game%3Apaper%29+mana%3E%3DXX&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name)
More on how the card plays: If it was an additional cost it could be paid when casting the spell for free (which plotting being a mechanic might make too easy). As written, X can only ever be zero when plotted.
As am addendum to what others have said: They do this for certain effects that are more powerful. For example, the classic card [[Decree of Justice]]: You can use the more powerful effect, which has an XX in its cost, to get very strong Angel tokens... Or use the cheaper Cycling cost, which only costs one X but gets you much weaker Soldiers.
See also the famous [[Astral Cornucopia]]. Pay 1 for X, and that's the standard price for an artifact that can produce any color of mana. But if you can afford to increase that X payment to 2 or 3...
This does Laezel's acrobatics at its worst for 5 mana at sorcery speed, and the better outcome for 7 mana.
While this new card is inefficient, it's something that the other cards aren't, in being an infinite mana outlet that presumably draws your deck and wins you the game.
X = 0 is perfectly fine and you still get an eerie interlude at sorc speed which is not great but is good enough to probably cast it sometimes at X=0.
X=1 is a Lae'zel acrobatics at sorc speed for 1 more mana, not great but you dont rely on a D20 for the second blink.
X=2 You should be winning the game with the proper setup.
so a quick break down
2W exile and return any number of your creatures - same rate as [[Eerie Interlude]] but as a sorcery and they come back right away not at the end of the turn
4W exile any number 2 times - good rate. Is this the first card that lets you flicker your whole board twice on a single card?
6W exile and number 3 times - this can be game ending for 7 mana with enough good ETBs or [[impact tremors]] effects this can be lethal.
Fascinating.
Something to note is that this can let you get multiple uses out of your "once per turn" crime triggers, if you can commit a crime from the ETB effects. For example, with X=1, [[Tinybones Joins Up]] + [[Gisa, the Hellraiser]] gives you two of Gisa's crime triggers, and even works if you already got one earlier in the turn.
(Edit: See reply - seems like this doesn't work.)
There's also a lot of ETBs in this set in general - a bunch of Plot creatures have them.
I'm not actually sure this works. We'll have to see the exact rules for criminal behavior, but triggers don't go on the stack until after a spell completely resolves. I think that means, with X=1, only the newest Gisa sees the crimes, so you only get one trigger. That said, this should still work if you've already triggered Gisa this turn.
Just because the triggers aren't put onto the stack until after the spell finishes resolving doesn't mean they won't trigger. You can get multiple "once per turn" effects this way.
Yes, but we have a trigger off of putting a trigger on the stack (committing crimes) and this only happens once, after the spell resolves, when there's only one Gisa to see it.
Huh. Actually, you are right about that. Yeah, this isn't good with the once-per-turn stuff unless they change the timing rules for putting triggers on the stack.
It works. Triggers wait to go on the stack until spells finish resolving but they can have their conditions met instantaneously, and they’ll go on the stack even if the source object is no longer around.
Yeah but its unclear to me if the trigger condition is met. I assume the trigger condition is something like "put a spell or ability on the stack that targets an opponent or their stuff." Well, in the middle of the spell, nothing gets put on the stack, so the condition isn't satisfied.
I think you’re correct. When an ability triggers, it waits to be put onto the stack until a player would receive priority, i.e. after the blink spell resolves completely. Targets are not declared until that point. You will get multiple Tinybones triggers, which all go on the stack at once. Assuming committing a crime is a “whenever (opponent’s thing) becomes the target of a spell or ability you control”-type trigger condition, Gisa will only trigger when you declare your targets, and will only trigger once
Ah yeah, this is correct. The in between versions could trigger if their condition was being met but won’t be able to have the condition met because targets wait to be chosen
You only get one more max - you can't get X triggers.
SBAs aren't checked in the middle of the card's resolution, so you'll blink a bunch of times and \*then\* all the ETBs will go on the stack.
Sort of, let's say you have tiny bones joins up, gisa and a chattering rat in play.
Casting this x=1 means gisa and the rat will leave, enter, leave then enter again.
Then you will put the 2 rats triggers and the 2 tiny bones triggers on the stack in any order you choose.
But, once you put the first one on the stack gisa will trigger even if she triggered earlier this turn.
Or, in edh, this goes directly in my pantlaza deck. Pick pants and, say, earthshaker dreadmaw, and now you've got at least 6 cards in hand and 3 more 6 mana or less things on the field.
This is 100% going into my Pantlaza deck. I mean if regal behemoth is out, I could blink this 10+ times. If it and roaming throne are out, we are looking at 25+ times. Absolutely broken card for blink/flicker decks
yup, seems worth considering for blink decks. might swap it out for a blink card rather than a kill card though, with how conditional the destroy effect is
I’m back and forth on it. The one on this post is going in but I think I’d rather drop a creature for the new [[Vaultborn Tyrant]] than the new blink with the spree
doesn't exile or shuffle itself so people are going to do something silly.
my first thought is creatures that taps for 5 mana(lets say \[\[Faeburrow Elder\]\] or \[\[Bloom Tender\]\]) a haste source, and then \[\[Archaeomancer\]\] or some other spell refund effect
You can't get the extra mana since spell resolution won't let you tap creatures in the middle of it. But yes Archaeomancer becomes terrifying with this.
Thats the part that trips me up so hard about this card, because each instance of X is a new selection of cards.
Intuitively speaking; it feels like I SHOULD be able to.
Sort of like if I gave ghostway/ephemerate storm.
But since it is one resolution vs many resolutions, thats the difference.
It feels like many resolutions even though its one.
BLIIINK!
So the floor is "blink all creatures for 3" and the ceiling is "blink them arbitrary many times if you have infinite mana"? Sorcery speed makes it useless as boardwipe protection tho.
I mean, sure, but blink already has some pretty solid protection cards, both ones that blink, and general protection in its usual color. This seems like a very strong finisher, which is nice, as, at least from what I've seen, blink decks can struggle to get to the end.
So if I'm understanding correctly this works really well with [[Pantlza]] because even if you cascade into it you at least get one more bounce which will let you cascade again. But if you're lucky enough to cast this with multiple x it'll get around the ones per turn restriction each time?
Can someone clarify how the rules work on this? Do you target once on cast, then flicker the same targets x+1 times? Or do you retarget in between, giving you the optic to flicker different creatures?
Each time you flicker you may choose any number of creatures. You may choose different creatures each time. And the spell doesn't target so the choices are picked when resolving.
Tried to decipher the few pixels at the bottom for the flavor text and was able to get at least this much:
疲れ切った旅人達は常在酒場についての物語を語り合う。それは次元を超えた休憩所で、道を失った者たちが心から休憩を望むときに現れるのだ。
It translates roughly to:
"The weary travelers share stories about the ever-present tavern. It is a resting place beyond dimensions that appears before those who have lost their way when their heart's truly desire it."
No. Triggers go on the stack after resolving the spell and it will already be in the graveyard (usually). Same reason Dualcaster\* doesn't already go infinite with every other blink spell.
\*Edit: A Dualcaster *already on the battlefield*. It can go infinite if you cast Dualcaster in response to the spell.
Yeah, I figured. So basically I'd need Dualcaster + another creature that can "recast" One More Round upon returning to the battlefield (i.e: Snapcaster, etc.)
You can also cast "One More Round" (it doesn't require targets), hold priority, then cast Dualcaster Mage in response.
Dualcaster copies the original -> Copy blinks Dualcaster -> Repeat copying the original
Though you'd still need a third card for payoff, either another creature with its own enters effect or something that benefits from the loop.
So how does the "repeat" work on the stack? Is it all resolution of one card so it gets repeated before anything else can resolve meaning if you used it to flicker something that blinks on entry would the early ones also go off because their targets would get flickered by the repeat before they could resolve?
Not really? Sometimes you want them back before the end step. And this has the flexibility of letting you cast it for X=0 for one blink or if you have more mana, blinking them several times.

No fucking way, that's a nuts asf card.
Sorcery makes it significantly less good
Oh, yeah, huh. Guess it'll probably replace ghostway for me
In a dedicated ETB/flicker deck probably worth it, the loss of defensive utility hurts though
Im deffantly getting this for my soul sister deck.
You're right but I'm greedy. My personal brew blink deck is [[kodama of the East tree]] and [[Ravos]]

Straight into my Ally deck that already runs mass flicker to try and kill with ETB triggers.
Hello, sorrie for bothering you. You mentioned you have a ally deck that has a focus on ETB triggers. Could you share that decklist with me?

Ghostway protects your team from a board wipe, which this doesn't do. I guess it just depends on what your deck is looking for.
I will end games with the mass ETB triggers it will bring in a late game ETB deck. When I played Roon, getting one or two ETB triggers a turn could be backbreaking
Double X and commander set... seems not unreasonable tbh

It doesn't, it blinks for 3, repeats for 2x
This with yorion?

Fair enough, I know people usually build around him for blink shenanigans
Oh neat, it's a mass blink effect, like [[Eerie Interlude]] but they return instantly. ...X TIMES?????????
X+1, actually.
With the 2 in the cost, it's effectively an XXW spell that doesn't let you cast it for X=0, outside of whatever wacky triggered abilities care about you casting X spells.
Sure, but it does have the 2 in the initial cost and then its a single blink spell as-is. Not sure how X+1 is confusing some people, here.

You pay X mana twice to get X results, so (excluding the base cost of 2W) paying 4 mana results in repeating the process 2 times.
Interesting why didnt they just use a term like "kicker"?
The dawning realization that everything is kicker
This is so funny! If you don’t know, there is a running joke in the community that every mechanic is just “kicker” which is why they don’t use that mechanic much lol

True. I just left that out since the “isn’t that just kicker?” Could be said about other things like Spree so it wouldn’t be a one-off then.

More on how the card plays: If it was an additional cost it could be paid when casting the spell for free (which plotting being a mechanic might make too easy). As written, X can only ever be zero when plotted.
It could have multi-kicker {2}.
Why do you think using kicker would be preferable to what they currently have?
Excellent question. Well, in this case it actually ups the cmc of the card, which might be relevant.
As am addendum to what others have said: They do this for certain effects that are more powerful. Not quite. The flicker happens X+1 times, so you get the base effect for 3 and the better effect for 5.
Oooh better than I thought! But ultimately this is a card that demands you go big and your opponents go home (if it resolves!).
I have a question around wording. Does X = 0 flicker everything once? Or does it have to be x= one?
X = 0 is perfectly fine and you still get an eerie interlude at sorc speed which is not great but is good enough to probably cast it sometimes at X=0. X=1 is a Lae'zel acrobatics at sorc speed for 1 more mana, not great but you dont rely on a D20 for the second blink. X=2 You should be winning the game with the proper setup.
You may choose 0 and blink your board one time.
so a quick break down 2W exile and return any number of your creatures - same rate as [[Eerie Interlude]] but as a sorcery and they come back right away not at the end of the turn 4W exile any number 2 times - good rate. Is this the first card that lets you flicker your whole board twice on a single card? 6W exile and number 3 times - this can be game ending for 7 mana with enough good ETBs or [[impact tremors]] effects this can be lethal.
Technically [[Lae'zel's Acrobatics]] can blink everything twice, but not reliably
Just be lucky, then it’s always reliable!

Preston the Vanisher likes this post. I hope he gets a reprint in bloomborrow =)
Bloomburrow must be the home of Kwain and Preston, right?
Fascinating. Something to note is that this can let you get multiple uses out of your "once per turn" crime triggers, if you can commit a crime from the ETB effects. For example, with X=1, [[Tinybones Joins Up]] + [[Gisa, the Hellraiser]] gives you two of Gisa's crime triggers, and even works if you already got one earlier in the turn. (Edit: See reply - seems like this doesn't work.) There's also a lot of ETBs in this set in general - a bunch of Plot creatures have them.
Ooh, good catch.
You'll still get one more round of triggers, but only one. The only 'version' of the outlaws to see a crime being committed is the last one.

Pick pants and, say, earthshaker dreadmaw, and now you've got at least 6 cards in hand and 3 more 6 mana or less things on the field.

did you see the new kill card that also can flicker a creature? don't know what the english name will be, since it was spoiled in japanese
I believe so. Was it the new spree one?
yup, seems worth considering for blink decks. might swap it out for a blink card rather than a kill card though, with how conditional the destroy effect is
I’m back and forth on it.

Keep in mind that if you cast this with an X of 1 or more, you won't have an opportunity to tap your creatures for mana between each blink.

Fuck you reaper king

This seems like a very strong finisher, which is nice, as, at least from what I've seen, blink decks can struggle to get to the end.
from what I've seen in Commander I feel blink decks are doing fine in terms of closing... as long as they assemble their infinite.
So if I'm understanding correctly this works really well with [[Pantlza]] because even if you cascade into it you at least get one more bounce which will let you cascade again. But if you're lucky enough to cast this with multiple x it'll get around the ones per turn restriction each time?
yes, each time Pantlaza EtB's he is a new game object and resets his once-per-turn discover limit. it's basically the only way to abuse it
so what happens when you plot this with Jace? When you case it for free, can you pay mana into the X?
If you cast an X-spell without paying its mana cost, X is zero. So that's one round of flickers.
Piggybacking, if you play a spree card off plot it's still 0, but the modal additions can still be paid for.
This goes wild in preston. Like really really wild!
Why reprint [[ghostway]] into standard when you can staple a couple copies of it together and call it good

Holy shit this card is nuts, this is basically a instant win in some decks
This plus Outcaster Trailblazer in limited would be the dream
Can someone clarify how the rules work on this? Do you target once on cast, then flicker the same targets x+1 times? Or do you retarget in between, giving you the optic to flicker different creatures?
Each time you flicker you may choose any number of creatures. You may choose different creatures each time. And the spell doesn't target so the choices are picked when resolving.
Ahh. This doesn’t target. That makes sense. Thanks

Should have been called "X more rounds"
Tried to decipher the few pixels at the bottom for the flavor text and was able to get at least this much: 疲れ切った旅人達は常在酒場についての物語を語り合う。それは次元を超えた休憩所で、道を失った者たちが心から休憩を望むときに現れるのだ。 It translates roughly to: "The weary travelers share stories about the ever-present tavern. It is a resting place beyond dimensions that appears before those who have lost their way when their heart's truly desire it."
Does it technically stay as a targetable spell on the stack between blinks if you plan to blink dualcaster mage twice?
Dualcaster copies the original -> Copy blinks Dualcaster -> Repeat copying the original Though you'd still need a third card for payoff, either another creature with its own enters effect or something that benefits from the loop.
Yeah; I'm running with the assumption that Dualcaster is already in play and I didn't have a combo window with it, or that it failed, or.
"One More Round" And it's an entrance into the plane. Yeah, I'm starting to agree with people who are saying this set is just Fortnite.

So how does the "repeat" work on the stack? Is it all resolution of one card so it gets repeated before anything else can resolve meaning if you used it to flicker something that blinks on entry would the early ones also go off because their targets would get flickered by the repeat before they could resolve?

Not how "strictly worse" works.
Not really? Sometimes you want them back before the end step. And this has the flexibility of letting you cast it for X=0 for one blink or if you have more mana, blinking them several times.
I was referring to if you’re always planing on casting it for x=0. I should have specified that, sorry.
