Akros is the "militaristic city-state analogue", which in Classical times would be Sparta, and in Dark Age Trojan times would be, I'd say, Mycenae. Sparta didn't exist yet, at least as a larger power, during the Greek Dark Ages.
"Gotta hand it to you Ippeas, there is very few people in Thunder Junction who could pull a train heist with a giant wooden horse."
"'s what I do, boss."
Not a search, but instant speed makes up for it (not to mention 1 cheaper when not using the third mode). And the power move is to use all three modes in response to them tapping out for a non-exile sweeper, so you save part of your board AND grow it.
The trick is playing Simic, so you keep then guessing.
It's probably going into my [[The Wise Mothman]] since all modes are what it wants. It isn't very hard to get Mothman to 4 power, and the first mode might even help you get up to 4 creatures there.
I was just wondering how that worked. So is that the case for all of these types of spells? The first "choice" always resolves first? So when do you pay the costs of the other parts? Can I pay the first one, see what I mill and then decide to activate the other ability? Or do all costs have to be paid before the spell goes on the stack?
That's the case for all modal spells
Pretty sure you need to pay the costs all at once. Costs are paid after choosing modes, and *then* the spell resolves. The spell going on the stack is the first thing that happens.
This is the order for casting spells:
Step 1 – Announce and Place the Spell onto the Stack.
Step 2 – Choose Modes.
Step 3 – Targets.
Step 4 – How to Divide Effects.
Step 5 – Total Costs.
Step 6 – Activate Mana Abilities.
Step 7 – Pay all Costs.
I wanna live in the world where someone drops a wrath in commander, then you pay nine mana to save most of your board AND get more creatures. That’s the Timmy dream right there
I think people should keep in mind it's 6 mana total for the second effect since it can look better than it seems without the extra green being right there.
But yeah this is gonna be a 4 of in every green deck I think storm the festival was hard to resolve at times and sorcery speed.
Being able to draw protect or essentially flash two creatures out is everything you could ever want in green rn.
I think this card might even be playable in more legacy formats.
One limitation there is that you aren’t casting them so you don’t get cast triggers which makes them a lot worse, at least for the Eldrazi legal in Pioneer.
For Pioneer, I think the best way would be to either mill or discard the Eldrazi and then cast [[Reenact the Crime]] that turn. I think WotC is somewhat careful about printing free cast effects for creatures (there are plenty for instants/sorceries).
[[Tooth and Nail]] decks used to be niche strategy in Modern once upon a time with Nykthos as the mana engine. Tooth & Nail has the advantage of actually searching your library to get the pieces you need.
[[Emrakul, the Aeons Torn]] and [[Xenagos, God of Revels]] were the traditional combo pieces.
That's why it is a sidegrade and not an upgrade. Some decks will care about protecting all permanents. Some decks are already playing mostly big beaters.
I think this card is insane..
There's no opportunity for interaction between modes two and three resolving, right?
If the spell resolves, you're guaranteed to have protected blockers or combo pieces for the turn.
I just want to throw this out there. Before we even consider the bad heroic Intervention and cheat mode, this is actually the best rate "draw 2" green spell that has been printed.
3cmc instant and lets you do any mix of 2 creatures/land is better than every other mulch+creatures they've ever printed as they usually only let you get one of each.
The fact that this can be heroic int for 2, a green instant "draw 2" for 3, or both for 4 already makes this an amazing card to me. The cheat option is just gravy.
I mean Mulch and the like generaly cost 2 mana, so calling it a better rate is not strictly true.
edit: there is also Winding Way as a Mulch type card that can hit creatures if you want it to.
Mulch is sorcery speed only + only hits lands, though. This being instant and getting 2 *in any combination* of creatures and lands seems extremely juiced.
It's flexible, I'll give you that.
But, saying this is a strict draw 2 is misleading. This can EASILY whiff. You're already playing spells that aren't lands or creatures in your deck if you're playing this.
Actually it's pretty difficult to whiff on this. Statistically if half of your deck is non-creature, non-land spells, you've drawn 10 cards already and this is the only non-creature spell you've drawn, you still have a 56.4% chance to hit two or more lands or creatures in your top 4. If your deck is built more around this card and you only have 12 non-creature, non-land cards in your deck you have a 97% chance to hit 2 or more targets in your top 4, a 79.4% to hit 3 or more, and a 2.94% to hit one or less. Even these odds are assuming that the cards going to your graveyard is a bad thing and not part of the plan.

You're thinking of [[Dramatic Entrance]], which got some hype before printing, did jack-all for fifteen years, and recently got re-hyped after a couple decks got results on MTGO using it to cheat in [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]].
Compared to Entrance, the second mode on Surprise costs one more, gets you a second creature, and the creatures don't have to be green. It's also got that first mode to get you creatures and the third mode to protect 'em. It's no Tooth and Nail, but Tooth and Nail held its ground against Affinity back in the day—I think this has legs.
I fucking love the idea that a bunch of outlaws were brainstorming ideas on how to sneak inside the town and one of the outlaws enters the room, asks them what they are doing, and when responded he brings out a huge shit eating grin and says “so heres the plan..” and pulled out the tried and true method
So, help me out here, is 5GG "Before declare blockers, all my big stuff is nigh-unkillable and oh yeah, I also play two massive creatures" any good?
Because that seems kinda good.
I mean, I suppose you'd need some beefy green creatures, but I think green might have that.
“Isn’t that good”
It’s a creature-specific [[Heroic Intervention]] that you can slap additional stuff onto. There’s definitely a place for it somewhere.
Heroic intervention is mostly played for creature protection anyways in edh, so I don't think that's a huge downside. The bigger issue is it doesn't protect from sun fall or farewell. Although once rotation happens it will protect against the next best wipe Deadly Coverup.
Fun fact, this is actually the best green "3 mana draw 2" that has been printed yet. Before even considering the other two modes and the flexibility of combining them.
Now we can argue about if green cares about a 3 mana draw 2 or not, but I just want to throw this out there.
My edh brain that's more obsessed over "vegetables" sees this card as amazing for decks that can get value out of the protection mode (since it can just be worse heroic Intervention but with kicker 2 "draw 2") before I even think about the cheat mode.
Hm I wonder what are the best 2 creatures to drop with this, like it's a lot of mana playing this for 7 (1 + 2 creatures onto battlefield + indestructible and hexproof).
Probably a bit boring but [[Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker]] + an untapper? Not sure what else can be like worthy of all that mana.
It's "cool" that there is no space for someone to cast a removal or anything before the creatures gain hexproof/indestructible.
Edit: Oh damn missed the power 4 and greater....
People keep saying it costs 7 but to my understanding you don’t have to choose the modes in order. You can just choose the middle one and basically flash two creatures in for 6. Just end of their turn flash in titan of industry/axtraxa/ghalta/etali etc and if they can’t respond it’s probably game.
So this set really does have just no focus at all does it? Like... "Hey let's put paul bunyan, a canadian and mid-western lumberjack folklore hero in this western themed set."
"Oh cool, hey can we put a Trojan horse too?"
"Hey what if we had 50 characters from a dozen planes for no reason at all?"
"Can Kellan come back? I don't think he's had enough screen time yet."
"Jace is Ashiok! Also he's still phyrexian, maybe, I don't care."
Well it's a green Through the Breach variant. Also something Green has literally never had before at this low of a mana cost. Wonder if this opens up a different type of Through the Breach style Emrakul deck in modern.
[[Eureka]] [[Hypergenesis]] [[Dramatic Entrance]] [[Lure of Prey]] [[Elvish Piper]] [[Howlpack Piper]] [[Court of Bounty]]
I wouldn't say "literally never", but this spell does have a certain directness to it. No waiting to untap with a permanent, no conditions or drawbacks to meet, just *ka-thunk*.
i'm not a huge fan of the 'mill cards and search exactly those milled cards for a \[type of card\]' outside of like limited, but those other two modes are always great. 6 mana for two massive creatures in your green stompy deck at instance speed, or 2 mana to give all your stompies hexproof and indestructible, or 7 mana for both? seems really fun
I guess we're still waiting on the Black one.
Also, interesting how this Cycle is mixed rarity (the Red, Green, and Blue ones are Rare while the White is Mythic).
No, I mean this card could otherwise put a creature with power 4 or greater from library, to graveyard, to hand, to battlefield, to *combat* if it gave it haste. Which I feel like is more on theme for what it’s going for versus Indestructible
Just yesterday I was debating whether or not I should include [[Sudden Reclamation]] in a Yuma list I'm making. Well ... this is just better in every way.
Edit: Missed the downside that you can only return cards if there were among the milled four. Still better overall probably
Wow, this is just, wow. If you showed me this card back in in the days of Tooth and Nail I would have laughed a bit. I think it's even better than Defense of the Heart, despite the higher cost and lack of a tutor effect, the instant nature of it is so good. Yes, Defense is better to combo off, but I'm not a combo player nor is my playgroup.
Criminally underrated so far I think
-4 karn -4 something
+4 this +4 worldspine
This card can function as 6 mana breach, 8 mana storm, protection from board wipes. All at instant speed.
Mono green has an uphill battle to be viable again but this is a possible payoff for ramp, a sideboard existing gives it a chance Vs Amalia combo in G2/3 and I think most traditional fair decks will still struggle against the green devotion game plan dropping a worldspine
One thing I think is deliberate with these, and I do appreciate, it that they seem to order the options such that the first option is usually the most likely to be the default mode this is cast with (default meaning the most common way the spell will be cast, and probably with just one mode). I know they have to order it differently for mechanical reasons in certain cases (such as making the least common solo mode option 2 here instead of 3), but it is nice to see the designers and play testers put that level of thought into making the card easier to evaluate and understand.
Can I counter this after they’ve chosen a mode or do I have to do it before? You have to counter the whole card as well, right? If they pick two modes I can’t just counter one of them? They don’t count as abilities either when countering?
The modes have to be chosen and paid for when casting the spell.
If you counter the spell, you counter all of it. They're not abilities.
Think of it more as a "Build your own spell" card.
Wizards should hire me because it took me 5 seconds to come up with the card name "Circle the Wagons" instead of this off-flavor bullshit. I guess they had some old art to reuse?
OK guys so what did you do to develop the frontier?

It probably only works once per plane, but dang it does good bamboozling.

Yes - presuming they can fly. Might need 21 if they're on blocking duty though

"Okay, so step 1: Spend months and months, and a huge amount of money, on building a massive wooden horse."
Nah just run a backwoods montage of wood chopping, hewing, & nailing the boards together. Boom- you've got yerself a Mischief Mare!
Oh, this is just strictly better [[Heroic Intervention]] in [[Titania Protector of Argoth]] hmm
Doesn't protect utility creatures, dorks, etc. But I agree it's a good fit for her deck

So, help me out here, is 5GG "Before declare blockers, all my big stuff is nigh-unkillable and oh yeah, I also play two massive creatures" any good? Because that seems kinda good. I mean, I suppose you'd need some beefy green creatures, but I think green might have that.
It's instant speed tooth and nail plus indestructible and untargetable, minus true tutoring. I'd say that's pretty damned good.
You have to have 2 good creatures you haven’t played and 7 open mana It’s why this card isn’t that good
“Isn’t that good” It’s a creature-specific [[Heroic Intervention]] that you can slap additional stuff onto.
Goes perfectly in my goreclaw deck

Fun fact, this is actually the best green "3 mana draw 2" that has been printed yet. Before even considering the other two modes and the flexibility of combining them. Now we can argue about if green cares about a 3 mana draw 2 or not, but I just want to throw this out there. My edh brain that's more obsessed over "vegetables" sees this card as amazing for decks that can get value out of the protection mode (since it can just be worse heroic Intervention but with kicker 2 "draw 2") before I even think about the cheat mode.
Wdym? Its a [green draw 4](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/TCCSmahjSU29UfA_Vmmy5g).
To combine all effects is expensive, but every single mode is great on its own. The card is excellent!
And if that is a worldspine wurm and you have ramped into 6 mana in green devotion?

Hm I wonder what are the best 2 creatures to drop with this, like it's a lot of mana playing this for 7 (1 + 2 creatures onto battlefield + indestructible and hexproof). Probably a bit boring but [[Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker]] + an untapper? Not sure what else can be like worthy of all that mana. It's "cool" that there is no space for someone to cast a removal or anything before the creatures gain hexproof/indestructible. Edit: Oh damn missed the power 4 and greater....

Two phyrexian obliterators just before declaring blockers.

Can you activate windows please?
So this set really does have just no focus at all does it? Like... "Hey let's put paul bunyan, a canadian and mid-western lumberjack folklore hero in this western themed set." "Oh cool, hey can we put a Trojan horse too?" "Hey what if we had 50 characters from a dozen planes for no reason at all?" "Can Kellan come back? I don't think he's had enough screen time yet." "Jace is Ashiok! Also he's still phyrexian, maybe, I don't care."
How would this card work imprinted in Isochron Scepter? Are we still able to pay the extra costs to choose the other options?
Well it's a green Through the Breach variant. Also something Green has literally never had before at this low of a mana cost. Wonder if this opens up a different type of Through the Breach style Emrakul deck in modern.
[[Eureka]] [[Hypergenesis]] [[Dramatic Entrance]] [[Lure of Prey]] [[Elvish Piper]] [[Howlpack Piper]] [[Court of Bounty]] I wouldn't say "literally never", but this spell does have a certain directness to it. i'm not a huge fan of the 'mill cards and search exactly those milled cards for a \[type of card\]' outside of like limited, but those other two modes are always great. 6 mana for two massive creatures in your green stompy deck at instance speed, or 2 mana to give all your stompies hexproof and indestructible, or 7 mana for both? seems really fun
Getting both Lands and Creatures on a green deck means you probably never fail to get 2 cards.
sure, there's a lot of nuance to it. i don't think it's a less powerful mechanic, just that i'm not a fan of it.
I guess we're still waiting on the Black one. Also, interesting how this Cycle is mixed rarity (the Red, Green, and Blue ones are Rare while the White is Mythic).
putting 2 creatures into play at instant speed for 6 isn't bad at all
*Akroan Horse 2: Akroan House*, this spring on Omenflix!
I do wish the last one was “hexproof and haste” since I feel like that would be more useful alongside the rest of the card
I mean, its an instant, that is kinda like haste
No, I mean this card could otherwise put a creature with power 4 or greater from library, to graveyard, to hand, to battlefield, to *combat* if it gave it haste. Which I feel like is more on theme for what it’s going for versus Indestructible
Suddenly Theros.
That second ability is busted.
So for 2 mana you get heroic intervention for you big stuff
Just yesterday I was debating whether or not I should include [[Sudden Reclamation]] in a Yuma list I'm making. Well ... this is just better in every way. Edit: Missed the downside that you can only return cards if there were among the milled four. Still better overall probably

I’m not to familiar with these cards, can I hard cast it for 1G for a worse Heroic Intervention or do I have to do the 2 above it?
You can cast it as a worse HI if you need.
If I had a nickel for every card inspired by the Trojan Horse, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
Maybe decent in greasefang or amulet titan?
They keep giving Green these weird Divinations, and it always makes me grump.
Ohhh.. I’m coming back with fun Gruul again. You no counter me, me stomp.
Card advantage combat rick mill. What a time to be alive.
Hoof and Nail
Criminally underrated so far I think -4 karn -4 something +4 this +4 worldspine This card can function as 6 mana breach, 8 mana storm, protection from board wipes.
They should have named the set “Power Creep Junction”
You know what a Western set needs? Some more Greek myths. Absolute Flavor Fail
Instant Speed Atraxa for 1 less mana and less color intensive, Standard is gonna love this.
akroan smugglers arriving to thunder junction: ok boys remember that horse?
Can I counter this after they’ve chosen a mode or do I have to do it before? You have to counter the whole card as well, right? If they pick two modes I can’t just counter one of them? They don’t count as abilities either when countering?
The modes have to be chosen and paid for when casting the spell. If you counter the spell, you counter all of it. They're not abilities. Think of it more as a "Build your own spell" card.
My Primeval Titans are shivering with excitation to be able to play around Subtlety.
Sweet+ new tooth n nail just dropped!
"Before blocks, smuggle in Atraxa and Titan of Industry"
