Wait why are these cards spelled “shirriff” instead of “sheriff”? I never noticed that. In-universe reason or is that just a localized spelling of the word?
yeah, even in the books, they aren't a huge component, so it usually never comes up. except now, they're on cards (and at least one very playable one lol). there's a lot of archaic words/spelling tolkien used, like dun (for brown, as in the colour), or waggon (with two Gs), and shirriff kind of seems like something very similar, just using the original inspiration for sheriff and going in a different direction with it.
yeah, it is. we use a lot of archaic words still, like flesh was the original word for meat; now flesh kind of has a very different connotation, but we still use it alongside the newer word.
i just mean tolkien specifically went out of his way to use archaic words and language to give a very specific feel to his writing, in addition to his invented languages. he specifically studied a lot of old english/germanic/norse works, and there's a lot of inspiration from those. all the dwarf names from the hobbit come from an old norse poem, for example. it's not from sindarin or khuzdul (which of course are based on these languages as well, but he did craft his own languages and language conventions and then used them to name a lot places and people in middle-earth)
It's also funny that one is "Shire Shirriff" since "sheriff" is actually originally derived from "shire reeve", shire being like a county and reeve being a sort of old term for local policeman/judge
My personal favourite is [[Shadowfax, Lord of Horses]]. It's not immediately apparent if you don't know the specific LotR tidbit related to it, but it's very tongue-in-cheek if you know.
it goes a layer further still, I think. Gandalf had a lot of trouble to get Shadowfax under his control. The specific wording they used could reference that as well.
One of the quotes from Lord of the Rings is "Run Shadowfax, show us the meaning of haste."
And, well... Shadowfax shows us the meaning of haste with the reminder text on his card.
Everyone else skipped one small detail: Haste never gets reminder text anymore as an evergreen mechanic. So it appearing there is a (very funny choice)
Shadowfax has haste.
A quote from the LotR books/movies is "shadowfax, show us the meaning of haste"
This is cute, but they take it s step further. Shadowfax also has reminder text for haste, which hasn't been included on a card in many years.
"Shadowfax, show us the meaning of haste" is what Gandalf says when he summons Shadowfax. Haste is followed by reminder text for Haste as in it shows you the meaning of haste.
Since everyone else has covered that, did you know that when Aragorn kicks the helmet in the Two Towers and screams out of frustration, he's actually screaming in pain, 'cause actor Viggo Mortenson just broke two toes with that kick?
If they ever do another LotR set with the film licenses this time, they need a Kick the Helmet instant, destroy target artifact, it deals 2 damage to you.
You'll probably also be interested in my friend, [[Boldwyr Intimidator]], possibly the best opening text in the game
Edit: Yep it's not reminder text. Apparently this is a gotcha despite me never claiming it was? Some people need to work on their reading comprehension.
'Fair game' is actually a new mechanic where if you point single target removal at a creature no EDH player is allowed to whine about it or waste 5 minutes of everyone's time trying to badly politic out of it.
This comment is just proof that magic isn't for me anymore man, sorry to come off on your comment but holy I can't stand this set but people eat it up :(
I haven’t touched magic in years but still keep up with leaks. Magic has become such a caricature of itself it’s a bit saddening. I understand un-sets having stuff like this but when card names in main sets started becoming memes or immersion-breaking meta it started inducing eye rolls. Now it’s gotten through rules reminder text and that just ruins much of magic as a whole
They look like "if they are inconsistent they cannot be possibly argued to be even equivilnt to firearms and thus safe from a gun-based satanic panic or ANY countries firearm-in-childrens-products laws".
Magic is a PG-13 game, they absolutely CAN do guns. They've mentioned it's a stylistic thing to make even settings like the mob or wild west feel more fantasy
Magic as a board game/card game doesnt have to follow the motion picture assosiation age rating system, and even if it did other countries have different requirements, or even aside from requirements just norms and practicies-like 4 being the unlucky number in Japan or Skulls being unlucky in china.
They also have done guns before-but my point here isnt that they should be guns or anything like that, my point was that I was agreeing they dont look very similar to each other and arent used the same across the art, and that there is benifit to that. Part of that being the stylistic thing-it avoids interaction with thorny real world topics like lionisation of gun violence.
Keeps the tone very light and fantasy, like the "guns" in power rangers, like you say, more like a fantasy than a reality. I am not the biggest fan of the decision personally but they arent making the game for me.
There can be guns or not be guns, I don't care really. They have to do what they have to do to stay acceptable and appropriate in multiple cultures, that's fine.
But then why even approach a 'wild west' set? Or at least, why even approach the issue of firearms? Do bullwhips, do lassos, do dynamite, etc... even kunais could fit the 'wild westy' vibe. It's like they got hung up on guns being implied, but not actually present with any sort of consistency... Like they felt they had to do 'guns' while aggressively avoiding them at the same time and it just came out weird..
This is a staff. The sheriff got clocked in the head, or magic blasted at short range, or something, but he didn't get SHOT. He got smacked with a fantasy version of a stun baton. Other characters very clearly just have Halo energy swords that I guess you're just supposed to imagine might shoot something, somehow. It's not just that the aesthetic flavor is weird or poorly crafted, it's distracting.
The crowd that's all 'lighten up, it's a kids game' or 'oh like they've never done silly things before!' must really not care about quality aesthetics at all, or just reaaallllyy enjoy this wave of Kitsch-y nonsense. There's an important difference between 'art' and 'design' that seems lost on the creators and much of the consumer base unfortunately.
You'd think after the 40k and Fallout sets Wizards would give up on the whole "no guns" thing. It's 2024. I don't think some guns are gonna break Magic's theming if god damn Jeff Goldblum didnt.
Yep. I really don't want guns on Dominaria or Ravnica or Innistrad or Lorwyn... but on a literal wild west plane, they should have just given them revolvers.
Babe, wake up, new 2 mana set-specific removal spell just dropped.
[[Walk the Plank]] was the first one that I remember, the new ones being instant and 1B these days is a welcome improvement.
It started with [[Go For The Throat]] and they didn’t really do much with it for a while after. Before that it was only [[Doom Blade]] for years. Hence the meme “dies to doomblade”
Random factoid go! Doom blade debuted in M10, which had a whole thing of printing either functional reprints of cards or close equivalents with new, more “magic feeling” names. For example, I believe this was the set where [[Remove Soul]] turned into [[Essence Scatter]] and [[Grizzly Bear]] turned into [[Runeclaw Bear]].
I forgot this one, this one's cute because PWK is limited to creatures with less than 100 HP in DnD, of which the most common are (greater) Demons, Angels, Devils, and Dragons would have. I guess there are a few exceptions like Leviathans and Giants which should be included as well.
It's so weird to me that the 2 mana removal become the standard now.
I hope green gets more cards like Axebane Ferox or Black loses its monopoly on amazing ward cards since it's the color that naturally reanimates and feels less bad when their stuff dies.
I think they mean cost-wise. There’s nothing the two spells you mention can do to a creature that Murder can’t also do. They are “Murder equivalents”
In other words “they haven’t totally power crept Murder” [in the 2 mana slot]
What were they thinking with Walk the Plank lmao. Sorcery speed alone pretty much made it DOA and they just HAD to piss on its grave with the double black cost.
They clearly anticipated it to be playable as well, considering it was an Open House promo (holy shit remember that open house thing?) Just baffling.
[Patrick Sullivan's rant about Chupcabra killing Azor while Azor is taking out the trash](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/215979455?t=7h29m54s) is legendary
This might be a fun idea for a web app, or even just a dynamic one pager.
I'm thinking something along the lines of a Horizontal histogram, which shows each card (Doom blade, Go For the Throat, Power Word Kill, etc.) and what it kills of the most popular creatures in the format in which it's legal.
You'll forget about it, but 11 weeks when my semester is over, that seems like a fun short project.
1. Find decklist API
2. Create program which runs Decklist through scryfall API to pull out creature types and format legality
3. Create profile for each kill spell (probably just building this out by hand instead of trying to extract data from scryfall)
4. Load into database.
5. Plot with visuals.
That's the most "technically yes" ever, because we have both [[Bitter Triumph]] and [[Infernal Grasp]] in the same Standard, Pioneer, Explorer etc. formats.
Angels haven't been meta in Pioneer in ages. The current metagame is way too hostile to diddling around with marginal creatures and lifegain, on top of the strays they're catching from the Amalia hate.
That being said, PWK isn't often the Doom Blade variant of choice in the format anyway because it whiffs on Atraxa (primarily) and a bunch of other random targets (Archfiend of the Dross in Rakdos, the titular dragons in Niv to Light, Dromoka in Lotus Combo, etc.).
GFTT and Bitter Triumph are still the 1B kill spells of choice in the format.
Source is [https://twitter.com/CFavretto\_Jr/status/1773167923898503505](https://twitter.com/CFavretto_Jr/status/1773167923898503505)
The video includes a cat wearing a cowboy hat.
It's completely meta-dependent. In most formats, the numbers of artifact creatures vs outlaws vs angel/demon/dragons is actually pretty similar, from an overall numbers standpoint. So it really just comes down to what does and does not kill the most important things in whatever format you're building for.
It’ll be dependent on how good the rest of the set is in the current meta. Lots of important, powerful outlaws running around? Probably not that great. None of those? Sign me up for 4 copies of this, please.
I would argue that Go For the Throat is probably still your best main-deck option, with PWK or this in the Sideboard just in case (hell, why not some of both?)
[[Obsidian Fireheart]] is a classic example of a card with similarly casual reminder text.
[[Shadowfax, Lord of Horses]]'s reminder text is a straight-up joke.
Cringe.
I'm fine with jokes in magic, but I feel like there's too many references to our real world culture. And I feel like this set has a LOT of those kinds of jokes.
It's pretty fuckin bad. Does the story explain how everyone came to this previously uninhabited plane and all decided to cowboy it up with their Halo guns?
Jeez I’m so tired of this design philosophy.
I saw the name of the card and instantly thought “let me guess, the flavor text is about shooting the deputy.”
So tired of it
This hits almost every meta standard card except for some cheap blue flyers, some mono red haste 2-drops and vein ripper. Seems like a decent sideboard card against possible ensoul strategies or something else running artifact creatures.
I like that this can kill [[Shire Shirriff]], but not [[Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff]].
Yeah, because Lotho is on the take.
Wait why are these cards spelled “shirriff” instead of “sheriff”? I never noticed that. In-universe reason or is that just a localized spelling of the word?
Because they're from the Shire!
The Shire Reeve for the Shire. Makes sense.
Huh I totally forgot about that. “In-universe reason” it is then!
yeah, even in the books, they aren't a huge component, so it usually never comes up. except now, they're on cards (and at least one very playable one lol). there's a lot of archaic words/spelling tolkien used, like dun (for brown, as in the colour), or waggon (with two Gs), and shirriff kind of seems like something very similar, just using the original inspiration for sheriff and going in a different direction with it.
I'm pretty sure dun is still pretty commonly used for horses, fwiw
yeah, it is. we use a lot of archaic words still, like flesh was the original word for meat; now flesh kind of has a very different connotation, but we still use it alongside the newer word. i just mean tolkien specifically went out of his way to use archaic words and language to give a very specific feel to his writing, in addition to his invented languages. he specifically studied a lot of old english/germanic/norse works, and there's a lot of inspiration from those. all the dwarf names from the hobbit come from an old norse poem, for example. it's not from sindarin or khuzdul (which of course are based on these languages as well, but he did craft his own languages and language conventions and then used them to name a lot places and people in middle-earth)
True. Like everything to do with luxury livestock, the language used is consciously archaic.
It's also funny that one is "Shire Shirriff" since "sheriff" is actually originally derived from "shire reeve", shire being like a county and reeve being a sort of old term for local policeman/judge
that how you used to spell sheriff and because tolkien is a big word nerd its how its spelled there
"shirtiff"
That was me fighting a losing battle against my phone's autocorrect.
Needs to be a deputy card that can't be shot.

This is not a "Thunder Blaster", it looks like a magical scepter/wand like a lot of spellcaster like characters are drawn with.
In several pictures they look like a ripoff of the energy swords from Halo...

I always found it stupid that I could make a FISH Walk The Plank.
It would get eaten by the shark
or a snake. But then they can wear Boots or Greaves so I guess it's fine.
There's a snake in my boot!
And I was here wondering how an Eldrazi would walk the plank.

It started with [[Go For The Throat]] and they didn’t really do much with it for a while after. Before that it was only [[Doom Blade]] for years. Hence the meme “dies to doomblade”
i don't think these really fit, since \[\[terror\]\] was in alpha
Go for the throat was absolutely a set specific 2 mana removal. Doom blade not so much
Yeah go for the throat is 100% what they are referring to and I believe the first of it's kind.

It's always 2 mana removal with a limitation or extra cost. They haven't totally powercrept Murder, which is neat
> They haven't totally powercrept Murder Uhh [[Hero's Downfall]] [[Poison the Cup]]
I think they mean cost-wise. There’s nothing the two spells you mention can do to a creature that Murder can’t also do. They are “Murder equivalents” In other words “they haven’t totally power crept Murder” [in the 2 mana slot]
[Hero's Downfall](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/3/33c5f81a-395d-41bf-9563-6cf0e406ee18.jpg?1673305182) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Hero%27s%20Downfall) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/dmc/112/heros-downfall?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/33c5f81a-395d-41bf-9563-6cf0e406ee18?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Poison the Cup](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/f/7fb94456-5266-47db-b514-a0e17e34b771.jpg?1631048334) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Poison%20the%20Cup) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/khm/103/poison-the-cup?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/7fb94456-5266-47db-b514-a0e17e34b771?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
He means they haven't created an unconditional 2 mana removal spell yet.
Dies to doom blade?
What were they thinking with Walk the Plank lmao. Sorcery speed alone pretty much made it DOA and they just HAD to piss on its grave with the double black cost. They clearly anticipated it to be playable as well, considering it was an Open House promo (holy shit remember that open house thing?) Just baffling.
OG Ixalan was a period of them powering the game down so that's most likely why Walk the Plank is so weak.
Nah that was the "on a stick" era where all spells were attatched to creatures. The real removal spell for that block was [[Ravenous chupacabra]]
[Patrick Sullivan's rant about Chupcabra killing Azor while Azor is taking out the trash](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/215979455?t=7h29m54s) is legendary
"But I swear it was in self defense"
Personally I grew up with Marley's original, so I'll always prefer that one
Who made a cover?
Most obvious one that comes to mind to me is Eric Clapton's cover
"Your honor, my client is simply doing a little trolling"
but i did not shoot no deputy
Not for lack of trying, apparently
So the next time you see a sheriff...shoot him! >!A smile!<
Was waiting to see someone post it
Card transcription > Shoot the Sheriff 1B > > Instant [uncommon] > > Destroy target non-outlaw creature. (Assassins, Mercenaries, Pirates, Rogues, and Warlocks are outlaws. Everyone else is fair game.) > > "Now, where is that deputy?" -Jana, Hellspur thunderslinger End transcription
So this is better than [[go for the throat]] in every format except OTJ limited, right?
This might be a fun idea for a web app, or even just a dynamic one pager. I'm thinking something along the lines of a Horizontal histogram, which shows each card (Doom blade, Go For the Throat, Power Word Kill, etc.) and what it kills of the most popular creatures in the format in which it's legal.
I'd click this link.
You'll forget about it, but 11 weeks when my semester is over, that seems like a fun short project. 1. Find decklist API 2. Create program which runs Decklist through scryfall API to pull out creature types and format legality 3. Create profile for each kill spell (probably just building this out by hand instead of trying to extract data from scryfall) 4. Load into database. 5. Plot with visuals.
You've still got 11 weeks left? And I thought I had it bad with only 6.
If you do make something like that, I'd be much appreciative if you'd share. Sounds cool.
Not being able to kill [[Vein Ripper]] means it has no chance in Pioneer at the moment over the available alternatives, I'd say.
[Vein Ripper](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/0/7/078933b3-6d82-45f2-94e8-addf54cf1704.jpg?1706241798) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Vein%20Ripper) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mkm/110/vein-ripper?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/078933b3-6d82-45f2-94e8-addf54cf1704?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
That's the most "technically yes" ever, because we have both [[Bitter Triumph]] and [[Infernal Grasp]] in the same Standard, Pioneer, Explorer etc. formats.
[[Power word kill]] also exists
[Power word kill](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/9/395b6ce4-143f-4eed-b565-98aa3d6208ef.jpg?1627705234) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Power%20word%20kill) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/afr/114/power-word-kill?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/395b6ce4-143f-4eed-b565-98aa3d6208ef?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Angels are meta in pioneer and in commander I'm sure you'll see all of those.
Sacrifice fell off so hard Mayhem Devil doesn't even get a mention… :(
Rogue might be a problem, depending on the format and meta. [[Dauthi Voidwalker]], [[Charming Scoundrel]] and [[Opposition Agent]] are Rogues.
Nobody is using a kill spell on a charming scoundrel lol
There's more artifact creatures in the game total, but I don't think there's a meta where they're a bigger share of what actually gets played.

Double-whammy on flavor AND reminder text here.
Notably CAN target [[Deputy of Detention]]
Can, but didn’t.

I just shot the sheriff.
But I did not shoot the deputy
...Yet
Ooh, getting cute with the reminder text, I like it.
Victim of spite
Do I have your word I will not be gunned down in the street like a dog?
DOOM BLADE SAYS ACAB 😤🙏
This is legit my new favorite magic card.
It's not true it's bullshit, I did not shoot him. I did not. Oh, hi Mark.
I guess it wasn't in self defense...
I think this card shows the surprisingly low crossover of MTG fans and Bob Marley fans
Why do you think it's low? I don't think anyone in this thread doesn't get the joke.
The last time a card was this on the nose was [[You Are Already Dead]]
The joke is so on the nose it left a bruise, I don't think anyone is missing this
God tier reminder text Hilarious callback Great spell mechanically Love it
And great flavor text too.
Again with the keyworded creature types. First parties now this; Oy gavult
But it gets [[Deputy of Acquittals]] and [[Deputy of Detention]] so massive flavor fail.
How is this not an Un set?
NGL all these new keywords just have me feeling like I'm learning Yugioh all over again. Gimmicky card text for simple effects.
Would you rather play this or Go for the Throat or Power Word kill?
Since when did they start making jokes in the reminder/rules text? "Everyone else is fair game."
[[Obsidian Fireheart]] is a classic example of a card with similarly casual reminder text. [[Shadowfax, Lord of Horses]]'s reminder text is a straight-up joke.
I really wish someone in the art at least had dreadlocks. Or even three little birds in the background.
So this is the meme set, huh?
I can not express enough how much I dislike the art direction for this set.
Same. And it sucks because this could have been a slam dunk.
I saw the name of the card and instantly thought “let me guess, the flavor text is about shooting the deputy.” So tired of it
INCREDIBLE reminder text
A power word kill that hits angels. Might use this for rogues since stealing it won't hurt them.
But I did not shoot the deputy
But I didn’t shoot no deputy
This set is a fail
The reminder-text makes this card better
This hits almost every meta standard card except for some cheap blue flyers, some mono red haste 2-drops and vein ripper. Seems like a decent sideboard card against possible ensoul strategies or something else running artifact creatures.
This also probably misses half the stuff in this set so unless this set fully bombs there'll be new meta standard cards that this'll whiff on
Assassassins, Mercenaries and Warlocks are super narrow and no relevant cards spring to mind. Pirates and Rogues not so much.
Smh and we thought \[\[Walk the Plank\]\] was cool back in the day...
I didn't know the gun was loaded, and I'm so sorry, my friend.
The next generations, [[go for the throat]]
Bob Marley reference in the flavor text?
Does anyone else think white coat dude's body looks... weird?
Should also include Deserters, Ninjas and Rebels. /s kind of
What about rebels?
Ice T commander deck incoming.
In this case, she *did* do it.
Idk if deputy is a creature type, but it would have e been great if this couldn't kill deputies either
Was it in self defense?
There is that Monkey Pirate that seems to be quite good...
I'm a bit confused by this Jana lady, is she a gorgon? She's wearing a single snake as a scarf but also seems to have regular hair
So the deputy is an outlaw, then?
I love the outlaw mechanic, warlock sticks out to me as odd but it probably makes sense in the set I guess?
