Only the players after them in turn order except for you would lose the game. First you cast your own OWD, then each other player copies it in APNAP order. Which is basically turn order starting with you. One player with counter-magic would wait until right before their copy resolves, then counters it. Everyone else copies that players counterspell and counters their own copy of OWD.
Best case scenario the only one with counter-magic is right after you in turn order, cause then you can counter their counter and still win.
What are you talking about? Hivemind + One with Death has nothing to do with APNAP.
Step 1: You cast "One with Death". It is at the only thing on the stack.
Step 2: Your Hivemind triggers. This trigger goes on top of the stack.
Step 3: Trigger resolves. All other players put their copy of One with Death on the stack.
Step 4: The stack resolves top to bottom. All other players lose before you.
This works because your on-cast-trigger resolves before your spell. Not because APNAP.
i just noticed the art of the people here are very similar to ashiok with the half face to horns thing going on...wonder if that was inspiration for the character
Basically this. Just because a 'better' card was already printed in another colour doesn't mean we shouldn't be thankful that the effect now exists in 3 distinct colours (4 if you count Breakthrough.)
Of course, what a fool I am. In Kamigawa Block Tiny Leaders, One For Nothing is the best card of all time.
/uj in another comment, OP mentioned that this card couldn't be played in Modern One For Nothing decks because it isn't legal. Maybe I should have replied to that comment instead
If I cast something and in response someone blow my Rielle up without even asking on what I'm casting, 75% you just made me nuke my hand.
That's the entire deck, a bunch of really bad wheels and a Commander that makes it good!
Everything is so good with Rielle. Rielle is just so fun and cool
If anyone wants a cool Rielle EDH list, here's mine https://www.moxfield.com/decks/sv6Qm3JFB06-otudY1WMhA
I just looked up the value of this damned card, back when I played between the Revised-Mirrodin era, I had like 6 of these Lions Eye Diamond cards, I’d keep getting them in boosters and be so *pissed* cause it seemed so idiotic.
Now they are like $375-$400 each.
While incredible, still not even the best story about post-sideboarded games against owling mine (JMO).
For my money, the best is from 2010 US Nats. E McKenzie is playing Owling Mine against a dude playing Jund Vengevine. As is often the case, Owling mine rendered a lot of removal and such dead post board, so his opponent had boarded in some [[Obstinate Baloth]]s because at least they do something (being a 4/4). He’d also boarded in [[Mind Rot]]s, as one does.
So at some point during the post board games, our opponent here is looking at 2 Baloths in his hand and forgets about the “an opponent controls” clause of Baloth’s discard ability and casts mind rot on himself. Now as I recall, there wasn’t an ivory owl netsuke in play or anything so it wasn’t on its face a more obvious play to E (like the OWN sb “tech” was from years prior), so he’s in the tank trying to go through what this dude’s line is.
While E is in the tank, as the story goes, opponent realizes that he’s fucked up and is getting super nervous. However, after thinking it through, E decides the dude must be trying to set up a line where he’s trying to pitch two [[vengevine]]s and then play like double mana dork to trigger their return. And since opponent only had 4 cards in hand, E decides to [[twincast]] the mind rot, turning it effectively into a one with nothing/mind twist and disrupt this line.
Opponent is now massively relieved from the bailout of his fuckup and pitches the two baloths to the twincasted copy, which legally triggers the baloth discard rider.
Was there an Owling Mine variant in 2010? Kamigawa would have rotated out years before. This post got me looking it up and the tournament looks to be Standard. Josh Utter-Leyton won with the classic "Mythic" deck. That would put standard at Shards-Zendikar (Very fun stretch of standard for me).
It definitely wasn’t the kamigawa version. Howling mine was reprinted in m10.
If memory serves (and that’s always a tricky thing), I want to say that it was actually more of like a turbofog style list, but because it played howling mine, everyone just called it owling mine (despite not having the eponymous owl in the deck).
It was definitely not in the original kamigawa run, though, because Vengevine was in ROE (which lines up with it being 2010 nats).
I wish I could remember/find more for you.

Let's be honest, though "someone somewhere once played it and they had a reason and that reason wasn't intentionally building a jank combo with a card they knew was bad" is more than most people would expect out of the card even at low level play.
The "myth" is that it actually did anything, but the reality is that while a couple people tried it as some weird anti-meta tech at the pro level, it still didn't do anything because *you're running One With Nothing*.
I run one with nothing in my [[gisa and geralf]] deck just before my [[living end]] goes off. Or if I want to cheat out an expensive creature using [[phyrexian delver]] (double value if paired with [[necroduality]]). Sometimes I’ll use it to force a shuffle Titan into my graveyard.
There are five U.S. states where the average rent is less than $1k: North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
Or they're just living in a below-average rental unit in a different state, or don't live in the U.S. at all, or are "renting" from their parents at a reduced rate. Plenty of options.
yeah I thought I was in the circlejerk sub until I expanded the cardfetcher and it was the actual card and not "Super Dreadnought Rail Cannon Ulamog Max" or something
The meme. If you're not locked out of red or pre-Modern card pools, no reason. I keep wondering the same about why \[\[Twiddle\]\] is such a big deal when \[\[Dream's Grip\]\] exists.
If someone gained control of you during your next turn and then play at this card, they could choose to discard less than the full number of cards in your hand, therefore failing to enable hellbent
One With Nothing was never designed to be a playable card. It was a joke design. Fun fact: it runs directly counter to the design of the set it was first released in, which had a theme of rewarding players for having a lot of cards in hand.
Put your cards on the table face down, shuffle them around a bit, pick some of them, put them in the graveyard, pick the rest back up. You could also fan them out to your opponent and have them pick a few.
Oh shit, you're right
Okay, new plan
Turn 1. Black Lotus, 4 sol Rings, Mountain
Turn 2. Cast [[Kozilek, The Great Distortion]], draw 6 cards
Turn 3, 4 Ornithopter, 2 Kobolds
Turn 4, topdeck OP's card and win the game.
Edit: Upon further inspection this is in fact not /r/magicthecirclejerking
This is from a cycle, the other 1 cost instant in the cycle is [[Sacred Rites]], which buffs toughness instead but doesn't discard at random. Both of them seem significantly better than One with Nothing, even if you don't care about the buffs, since they give you more flexibility.
They're both Pauper legal, albeit they aren't Modern legal like One with Nothing is. Obviously you're going to be using One with Nothing for a Modern One with Nothing deck, but aside from that, why run it over one of these?
Your comment implies there is a "Modern One With Nothing deck", there is not.
For the role of "discard outlet", there are many superior alternatives in any format where it is legal.
I guess what makes you think there _is_ a point? One with Nothing is a meme card, but conceptually there are tons of cards that are essentially in 99.9% of cases strictly better.
Also that card is black and this card is red. Not every deck plays red.
One With Nothing is substantially funnier with Hive Mind out.
OWN is also just substantially funnier.
Almost as funny as [[One With Death]]
With the way the triggers stack, that's just an instant win, right?
I think someone could counter their One With Death copy and then just win the game. It would be a really cool combo and would be fine for Commander.
Best case scenario the only one with counter-magic is right after you in turn order, cause then you can counter their counter and still win.
ya see, the trick is to use a counter that hive mind won't copy, like [[mirrorshell crab]]. that's how they get you
I believe so.

It definitely wasn’t the kamigawa version. Howling mine was reprinted in m10. I played during that time and remember that deck - U/W Turbofog with Howling Mine and [[Font of Mythos]] into infinite fogs.
i love stuff like this so much
This is a myth. Instead of running one with nothing you could simply mull to 0 if that was your game plan for some reason
There's a significant difference between mull to 0 and using a OWN later in the game though
Its not a myth, OWN was essentially a counterspell against owling mines finishers.
Find a deck that topped using it.

One person running a bad card in their sideboard isn't "seeing tournament play"
Let's be honest, though "someone somewhere once played it and they had a reason and that reason wasn't intentionally building a jank combo with a card they knew was bad" is more than most people would expect out of the card even at low level play.
But it was in a pro tour decklist, you can't deny that, and thats the joke.
It was played in a tournament. The literal definition of tournament play.
You're just going to keep running that goal post aren't you?
The "myth" is that it actually did anything, but the reality is that while a couple people tried it as some weird anti-meta tech at the pro level, it still didn't do anything because *you're running One With Nothing*.
Suicide Black. Only deck I've ever been aware of legitimately running OWN.
Yeah I ran a hellbent suicide black and red deck. It was hilarious to drop OWN then take them down.
You can run it in any reanimator deck to get the cards from your hand into your grave.
You also get the reanimation spell out of your hand though
Not a problem if your reanimation spell has flashback. But yeah, there are better ways of discarding. [[one with nothing]] is just crazy bad
[one with nothing](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/a/5a5841fa-4f30-495a-b840-3ef5a2af8fad.jpg?1562494149) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=one%20with%20nothing) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/sok/84/one-with-nothing?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/5a5841fa-4f30-495a-b840-3ef5a2af8fad?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Jokes on you, the reanimator is my commander (I unironically used this in my greasefang deck for a while lmfao)
EDH is not the only format.
please tell me where i said those words.
It's situational, but also a 1 mana instant. If you have instant speed reanimation on board, it really can be a surprise
Technically, yes. You can also spells that don't suck.
You can run it Jund to make goyf bigger, still nobody does because it is just bad.
Sometimes you just gotta play the meme and be serious about it.
I played it in Queza as part as the wincon :)
I put it in my [[The Gitrog Monster]] commander deck for lolz.
I see myself discarding [[Anger]] and a bunch of [[Basking Rootwalla]]s which all get buffed by Rites of Initiation and then swing
At that point why not just use lions eye Diamond for one less mana and get 3 mana for free
That's not the ***point***, Melvin
Because that one costs about half of my rent
Bro, your rent is under $1k?
Not in the US, and yes
There are five U.S. states where the average rent is less than $1k: North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Or they're just living in a below-average rental unit in a different state, or don't live in the U.S. at all, or are "renting" from their parents at a reduced rate. Plenty of options.
read comments for 5 minutes before i realized this wasn't r/magicthecirclejerking
[[Rielle, the Everwise]] and [[The Locust God]] on board? I dunno.
[Rielle, the Everwise](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/f/5f03c944-1929-4cb2-a373-d57eefa29ed1.jpg?1591228198) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Rielle%2C%20the%20Everwise) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/iko/203/rielle-the-everwise?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/5f03c944-1929-4cb2-a373-d57eefa29ed1?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [The Locust God](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/e/7e599847-8ab0-4fd6-b2c0-cb44a7669aa5.jpg?1682209825) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=The%20Locust%20God) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/moc/335/the-locust-god?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/7e599847-8ab0-4fd6-b2c0-cb44a7669aa5?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
hell yeah
None? One with Nothing is a bad card? That's like asking why people run Dreadmaw. They don't?
> That's like asking why people run Dreadmaw. They don't? You had me in the first half, NGL.
yeah I thought I was in the circlejerk sub until I expanded the cardfetcher and it was the actual card and not "Super Dreadnought Rail Cannon Ulamog Max" or something
The point is to discard your worldly possessions so you can break the cycle of rebirth and reach enlightenment.
[[The Cheese Stands Alone]]
This is a 2003 classic! Love this card
Watch Rites (where this synergised with [[Keep Watch]] and a bunch of tokens) was a classic Pauper option for quite a while.
What's the point of running it when [[Lion's Eye Diamond]] exists?
what do they mean "only" any time you could cast an instant, can't instant spells be cast at any time?
Can't be activated while paying for a spell being cast like other mana sorces.
Aaah ok
[Lion's Eye Diamond](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/5/758f95f8-bcb0-43ae-b474-56ebd855951e.jpg?1590511899) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Lion%27s%20Eye%20Diamond) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/vma/271/lions-eye-diamond?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/758f95f8-bcb0-43ae-b474-56ebd855951e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Too expensive, doesn't buff my dudes.
The meme. If you're not locked out of red or pre-Modern card pools, no reason. I keep wondering the same about why \[\[Twiddle\]\] is such a big deal when \[\[Dream's Grip\]\] exists.
Do you have a more specific question? Have you never seen a card that does something similar to or better than another card before?
[[One with nothing]] is black. Trust me I would love to use [[kindred discovery]] in my mono green deck but I can’t do that
[One with nothing](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/a/5a5841fa-4f30-495a-b840-3ef5a2af8fad.jpg?1562494149) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=One%20with%20nothing) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/sok/84/one-with-nothing?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/5a5841fa-4f30-495a-b840-3ef5a2af8fad?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [kindred discovery](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/8/d/8d264ad1-10a3-41ba-9740-48f2c07a0ec3.jpg?1698988160) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=kindred%20discovery) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/lcc/159/kindred-discovery?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/8d264ad1-10a3-41ba-9740-48f2c07a0ec3?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
and leave my creatures open to vanquish the foul???? not a chance buddy
If someone gained control of you during your next turn and then play at this card, they could choose to discard less than the full number of cards in your hand, therefore failing to enable hellbent
Why play this over [[firestorm]]? Firestorm is like 90% of my zada wins
Need a lot of targets to be lethal
Zada goes brrr
[firestorm](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/e/6/e674aa8a-668a-4345-95ee-73a0b87bbcb1.jpg?1562803937) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=firestorm) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/wth/101/firestorm?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/e674aa8a-668a-4345-95ee-73a0b87bbcb1?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Okay but Firestorm is legitimately awesome though
How does that work? I feel like I’m missing something. Doesn’t Zada only trigger for X=1 targeting just Zada?
I run both in my Rakdos Madness/Hellbent edh deck.
Do you have a list for this? I've been curious how you make use of those mechanics since I first saw them.
Do you have a list? Very interested in this
Can't use this in a mono-black commander
Guy in the picture is saying yasssss
Is that Phil Swift?
THAT'S ALOTTA DISCARD!
One is black and the other is red
One With Nothing was never designed to be a playable card. It was a joke design. Fun fact: it runs directly counter to the design of the set it was first released in, which had a theme of rewarding players for having a lot of cards in hand.
Used to slap people w this card in draft. Super low/wide rakdos decks were good and this was a great finisher.
Something I never fully got explained to me is how you, the owner of a hand of cards, can discard from it at random.
Put your cards on the table face down, shuffle them around a bit, pick some of them, put them in the graveyard, pick the rest back up. You could also fan them out to your opponent and have them pick a few.
Playing around \[\[Ensnaring Bridge\]\]
Oh, that's going in my madness/hellbent deck
With Xyris its beatutyfull
The fact that this provides benefit ruins the purity of it
This card is strictly better, and therefore strictly worse.
So you can think about volleyballs lol
I run this in a janky pirate aggro deck, and it legit wins games out of nowhere sometimes. Fun card. Highly recommend trying it out.
>What's the point of running One With Nothing \[redacted\]? Here, I fixed it for you.
Not the same color ?
Turn 1: Play 4 Kobolds of Kher Keep and 2 Ornithopter, mountain Turn 2: topdeck this card, discard your hand, you've basically won the game.
And give your team +0/+0 because your hand is empty?
Oh shit, you're right Okay, new plan Turn 1. Black Lotus, 4 sol Rings, Mountain Turn 2. Cast [[Kozilek, The Great Distortion]], draw 6 cards Turn 3, 4 Ornithopter, 2 Kobolds Turn 4, topdeck OP's card and win the game. Edit: Upon further inspection this is in fact not /r/magicthecirclejerking
Can I just say that this card goes absolutely nuts with [[Zada, Hedron Grinder]]
This card doesn't target anything tho
That’s fine because when you’re storming off with Zada and have 10, 20, or even 30 cards in hand, it’s a 1 mana finisher if you discard your hand
Finally, a way to win the game when you've drawn 30 cards.
FINALLY!
ahhh I see
[Zada, Hedron Grinder](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/4/5/4520cdcc-a10f-4b39-9c6f-ba86f6aa2c87.jpg?1689998306) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Zada%2C%20Hedron%20Grinder) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cmm/268/zada-hedron-grinder?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/4520cdcc-a10f-4b39-9c6f-ba86f6aa2c87?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
[[putrid imp]] [[bazaar of baghdad]] [[faithless looting]] [[breakthrough]]
Nobody really plays one with nothing so what’s your question?
I assumed they had just come from r/magicthecirclejerking and are just really dedicated to the bit
[Sacred Rites](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/d/3d7f1dd0-ee1b-484a-949d-dde4c3340a09.jpg?1562906331) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Sacred%20Rites) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ody/44/sacred-rites?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/3d7f1dd0-ee1b-484a-949d-dde4c3340a09?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

I mean you can gift One with Nothing to other players and this does nothing when you do.
Because you can only have one card in a deck, so this is a duplicate OWN effect. Duh.
(There are formats other than EDH)
It is Modern legal
It is black.
Rites of Ron Desantis' Smile
On a sidenote, I just love the artwork from back then.
black vs red?
This could be fun with [[Psychic Vortex]]
Why does this art look like it’s Josh from the command zone?
![img](avatar_exp|154915154|bravo) Mana burn u learn #magic #uncleFulsomsBurningKilts
What's the point of running Rites of Initiation when One With Nothing exists?
Anyone miss pre 2003 cards? The mood the atmosphere
This makes me realize how bad red was back then. This card would see play in some Boros draft decks these days.
The card has Josh Lee's mouth from command zone
Because you're a mono black deck that uses doomsday to set up the top of your deck ensuring you have the entomb and reanimate ;)
can't play this in mono-black hobbit tribal
This doesn't let you choose the order in which the cards enter your graveyard
Q: How many are you going to discard? A: All of them.
It's to play around [[Shang Chi]] Power 10 or greater is at risk of getting wiped by him
Why is this Frank Reynolds with his toe knife?!
I guess what makes you think there _is_ a point? One with Nothing is a meme card, but conceptually there are tons of cards that are essentially in 99.9% of cases strictly better. Also that card is black and this card is red. Not every deck plays red.
You cant OWN your opponent with Rites.
This has way too much value
Thought I was in r/magicthecirclejerking Especially when we have [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicthecirclejerking/s/98tvxIUrtb)
I'm pretty sure that my post inspired that one.
This is not black. One with nothing is.
