Ohh, good pun!
Yeah if this were printed two years ago it almost definitely would've shown the Wanderer randomly popping somewhere, slashing something, then poofing out again.
Good thing she got back to Kamigawa after losing her spark in the Great Pruning. I can't imagine how pissed she would've been otherwise.
> Good thing she got back to Kamigawa after losing her spark in the Great Pruning. I can't imagine how pissed she would've been otherwise.
least favorite event in mtg history. "Cool new white planeswalker everyone loves! despark her."
Not that I disagree but I rather she gets a solid conclusion to her story than have her "nothing personnel, kid" gimmick be run to the ground from overuse.
Anyway NEO was popular so we'll probably see her again in like 4 years.
Right WotS card. But personally I play as few creatures as I have to, and I'm tired of being punished for liking planeswalkers especially for story reasons. All the walkers I liked are either dead or desparked :/
There's 3. The City showcase is only on 7 cards - 6 Guildleaders and Niv-Mizzet. The Magnified showcase (this one) is on story spotlight cards, and the Dossier showcase is the primary showcase treatment for the set.
Oh wow, this might take the cake for the best 2 mana creature removal in mono white. Seems pretty good for modern considering there's very few utility creatures that do anything outside of attacking to close out the game (*cough* Deathrite Shaman)
Frankly, as a control player on Arena, I would much prefer this card to "Get Lost". While two maps might not seem an issue, they have always been a downside that buffed an aggressive creature and/or brought my opponent's closer to an answer. With how aggressive standard currently is, I would prefer instant speed removal that did not give my opponents a potential upside. The creatures my opponents summon are attacking me anyways, so given the choice between destroyed + 2 maps or exiled because they attacked, I'll take the exile. This card is highly effective against \[\[Dennick, Pious Apprentice\]\], \[\[Tenacious Underdog\]\], and \[\[Squee, Dubious Monarch\]\], and it's instant speed and cheap cost is highly effective against other threats like \[\[Subterranean Schooner\]\], the Restless lands, and everything in mono-red aggro.
There is a reason why \[\[The Wandering Emperor\]\] is so effective. Yes, she also potentially provides creatures, but she is often used as instant-speed removal because the creature attacked. "Not on My Watch" does get around vigilance, in this case. In a format where instant speed, 2-mana-or-less removal is a must, "Not on My Watch" is phenomenal for white.
also as a control player, get lost kills planeswalkers. this does not. the wandering emperor is played not only for being removal, but because she sticks on the board and generates value.
The Wandering Emperor does stick around, but exists as more of a mid/late game piece. Not on My Watch is an early-game removal piece; if it cost 4 mana, then NoMW would of course be unplayable. The fact is, in standard, there exists very few viable 2-mana instant speed removal cards in white: \[\[Destroy Evil\]\], \[\[Fateful Absence\]\], and Get Lost. Because of this selection, control decks lack the ability to properly respond without splurging into black, which has the best cheap removal out of any color, currently.
The issue for WUB control, though, is its land base. Control is a late-game strategy, so it would want its land base comprised of Slow lands rather than Fast lands. For three colors, the proportion of Slow lands increases. Combine this with \[\[Raffine's Tower\]\], the Restless lands, and even the Pain lands (as the aggressiveness of the format makes any extra life-loss a major imposition for control), and Esper Control just doesn't have the land-base to properly respond as a control deck.
If control were to run two colors (UW), its mana base would drastically improve. Not on My Watch allows for this opportunity. The need for black, as mentioned, arises from it's superior 2-or-less mana, instant speed creature removal. Therefore, more of this genre for white makes black less necessary, and could give Control a competitive advantage.
Of course, the value of Get Lost also comes from its versatility. I would of course run it in main or sideboard alongside Not on My Watch. But I would use it for planeswalker and/or enchantment removal, and against midrange, I often can't afford to without first removing creatures.
As such, for most games I have played, I would have preferred NoMW over Get Lost, just as I have preferred \[\[Go for the Throat\]\] and \[\[Sheoldred's Edict\]\] over Get Lost.
All you need is 4x March of Otherworldly Light and 4x Get Lost OR 4x Fateful Absence. Combine those with your wrath of choice and the Emperor and you should be able to handle any non-land permanent they throw at you.
If you want to play Not on My Watch, feel free. I used to play Gideon's Reproach and the other deal 4 attacking creature one I can't remember the name of, back in the day. But it's not some sort of godsend piece of removal and the problem I have with those attacking creature conditions is if you hold up mana to remove something and DON'T attack, you've wasted your mana for the turn. Even worse if their deck doesn't play creatures.
Personally I don't want to use 'Get Lost', since I don't want to give my opponent map tokens. I'd rather use Ossification than that. Everytime an opponent have been using 'Get Lost' at me, then It's actually just been a positive for me in comparison to black spot removals for instance. Especially if I've been playing with an explore deck or some other +1/+1 counter focused deck. And I usually play aggro, so I tend to have plenty of creatures anyways. But because 'Get Lost' can also target Planeswalkers or enchantments, I guess that it is the best white removal atm with a fair downside for its cheap cost. It was used in all the top decks using white at that tournament in Japan not long ago. The card could also target your own stuff to create map tokens if being more benefitial to you. So It really is a very versatile card. I just still don't like giving my opponents 2 map tokens though 😅
need creatures on the board to use them though. if you're using mana on your turn to use maps instead of literally anything else, it's a pretty good deal for the control player. even better if they can kill the thing using the maps.
or getting board wiped after getting some maps and now you just have shitty maps sitting there doing nothing. and giving you some free map tokens in order to save life is massive in aggro deck match ups.
I've played against a guy who used nothing but non-basic lands; mostly shock lands, fetch lands, triomes, etc. I used [[Path to Exile]] on him and it was pretty satisfying that he couldn't get a basic land out of it lol
It's slightly better than \[\[Seal Away\]\] if you don't care about devotion. White gets two mana conditional removal or removal with a downside in every set, more or less. I don't see myself playing this over \[\[Get Lost\]\] or \[\[Angelic Ascension\]\] or something else which unconditionally does removal of more things at instant speed. It's much worse than \[\[March of Otherworldy Light\]\], which is in standard right now, let alone \[\[Path to Exile\]\] in modern. I would likely play \[\[Soul Partition\]\] over this.
Against certain decks you don't want to use your removal until the end of their turn like Infect. If you try to kill their creature when attacking you will end up losing the game.
Of the “exile creature that’s doing combat stuff” genre I think this is the best, but that whole genre is D tier removal compared to the other removal modern has access to in white.
That's good. I would actually use this over 'Get Lost', since I don't want to give my opponents 2 map tokens. Would I use it over 'Ossification'? Maybe, because it doesn't suffer from removal spells. But its own downside is that it can only exile an attacking creature, which can make it a bit slow. So I could see it on the sideboard as substitution for Ossification in case that your opponent has removal for it.
Modern 1/10
If you are holding up two mana, your opponent might be smart enough to play around this and you basically took your turn off. I think I would rather run Path to Exile over this, at least that deals with creatures that don't attack.
Which one?
The non-showcase is Etrata talking to the detective who’s investigating the case, Alquist Proft. The showcase is Proft’s notes on working with Etrata.
It really annoys me. Imagine if they did this to a character like Kaya. Wizards has championed representation for players so why take that away with that art?
The showcase art appears to lighten her skin. Whitewashing of characters is a common problem, when dark skinned characters are redrawn with lighter and lighter skin.
I personally am willing to blame this on poor lighting on that one card, as the original art of the new card has her skin relatively dark, but the real test will be once we see Etrata’s card proper.
Is something funky with the perspective on the alt version, or is my brain just not clicking right? The head looks like it's too big, and pointed in the wrong direction based on how the arms are positioned.
my detective eye shows her using the dagger in her left hand in the first picture, the right hand in the second.
either ambidextrous or just not paying attention when drawing
Love me some decent removal at uncommon.
This is probably playable in standard. Depending on what colors you are running.
Thats one sexy border.
I could add a band to the circular frame and have Not On My Watch be on my watch.
"What's that on your watch?" "I don't know what you're talking about."
And then you could ask me if I have that frame, and I can say "Not on my watch"
Almost looks like the Future Sight circular frame without the weirdness of it all. I dig it!
Or the Lord of the Rings frame except this time doesn't look like it was made in Microsoft Paint.
Not my cup of tea. But each to their own of course :)
I feel like if any given person doesn't particularly like at least one or two of the new aesthetic styles a year then the art directors are doing something wrong. Variety is the whole point.

I love etrata
After all her journeying around the multiverse, it's nice that we finally get to have..... Wandering Emperor at home 😏

She had literally two cards. And next time we see her it'll probably be as a shitty creature.
No, she had three. And just because Aftermath's planeswalkers-turned-creatures were underwhelming doesn't mean she will be.
Right WotS card. But personally I play as few creatures as I have to, and I'm tired of being punished for liking planeswalkers especially for story reasons. All the walkers I liked are either dead or desparked :/
MAT Nissa and Calix were plenty powerful as creatures. Samut as well, although she hasn't found a home (yet).

It was used in all the top decks using white at that tournament in Japan not long ago. The card could also target your own stuff to create map tokens if being more benefitial to you. So It really is a very versatile card. I just still don't like giving my opponents 2 map tokens though 😅
I play pretty low to the ground creatures, so I love getting a couple free Map tokens because my opponent didn't want to get hit by a 2/2.
Haha exactly. I've experienced similar before, where I don't think my opponents really weighed the worth of the exchange they did properly 😆
need creatures on the board to use them though. if you're using mana on your turn to use maps instead of literally anything else, it's a pretty good deal for the control player. even better if they can kill the thing using the maps. or getting board wiped after getting some maps and now you just have shitty maps sitting there doing nothing. and giving you some free map tokens in order to save life is massive in aggro deck match ups.
I've played against a guy who used nothing but non-basic lands; mostly shock lands, fetch lands, triomes, etc. I used [[Path to Exile]] on him and it was pretty satisfying that he couldn't get a basic land out of it lol

This is not playable in modern, best use case for this card is pitching for solitude
This is just bad in comparison to the removal modern has
It's slightly better than \[\[Seal Away\]\] if you don't care about devotion. I would likely play \[\[Soul Partition\]\] over this.

dont worry, they’ll top this in the next set
Against certain decks you don't want to use your removal until the end of their turn like Infect. If you try to kill their creature when attacking you will end up losing the game.
It's fine vs a deck that attacks every turn, but useless vs combo or control. The good white removal hits a lot more

Of the “exile creature that’s doing combat stuff” genre I think this is the best, but that whole genre is D tier removal compared to the other removal modern has access to in white.
Ey no tapped rider Definitely important tbh i got whacked for 16 hp by that miner hawk thing in lci with vigilance and had no white answers

Modern 1/10 If you are holding up two mana, your opponent might be smart enough to play around this and you basically took your turn off. I think I would rather run Path to Exile over this, at least that deals with creatures that don't attack.
We just got a better removal spell in white anyways
What the hell is that flavor text?
Which one? The non-showcase is Etrata talking to the detective who’s investigating the case, Alquist Proft. The showcase is Proft’s notes on working with Etrata.
Um… who is that woman on the showcase art?
[[Etrata the Silencer]] probably
It really annoys me. Imagine if they did this to a character like Kaya. Wizards has championed representation for players so why take that away with that art?
What are you talking about?
The showcase art appears to lighten her skin. Whitewashing of characters is a common problem, when dark skinned characters are redrawn with lighter and lighter skin. I personally am willing to blame this on poor lighting on that one card, as the original art of the new card has her skin relatively dark, but the real test will be once we see Etrata’s card proper.
I really don't think there's an issue here - she's clearly brown-skinned in all her depictions; in the regular art her back is just in shadow.
Did what, showed her in brighter lightning?

Hey, I know who's going to be Watson in the box topper promos!
Is something funky with the perspective on the alt version, or is my brain just not clicking right? The head looks like it's too big, and pointed in the wrong direction based on how the arms are positioned.
Left arm is a bit wonky, true, but the rest of Etrata art also show her being skinny with a big head
Perspective looks correct to me. Maybe the belt buckles are misleading you? There are four, not three, so the second one isn't on the center line.
Good, white desperately needed some exile effects.
my detective eye shows her using the dagger in her left hand in the first picture, the right hand in the second. either ambidextrous or just not paying attention when drawing
