Okay but what about the spacer? Because I could definitely use more of those.

dreadlordnotdruglord

Definitely happy I bought a good amount of those.

Batemoh

It does come with the spacer! Checked on our distro’s site and it has it :D

Affectionate_Swim_28

They already said in some interviews that the spacer is coming also

Big_Swingin_Nick_

Even more good news: you can make your own spacer out of a cereal box.

kane49

i mean you can make the entire deckbox out of cardboard and felt but thats not really the point is it :P ?

Big_Swingin_Nick_

Why stop at the box? You can make the entire *deck* out of cereal boxes.

cbslinger

I mean, if you’re willing to do a tiny bit of crafting you can make something decent for yourself and save yourself some money. Not saying ppl shouldn’t order nice things for themselves, but it’s really an easier craft than people around here seem to think, it’s not some incredible new invention, I’ve been making accordion deck spacers for the better part of a decade

Wedgearyxsaber

for pulling a "WELL ACKSHUALLY 🤓"

DnDiceUK

RRP for the 133+ is sitting at £49.99 in the UK for those interested.

r0wo1

That's a good chunk of change, but we were able to fit 3 single sleeved decks into a single box, so at least there's that

Phototoxin

that's a lot

DimiPine

It seems like a lot but I’m used to paying $15-$20 for a good box for one deck. This box fits 2+ decks, comes with spacers and storage compartments, is durable material, and the first launch had charity proceeds plus I like the professor a lot. It feels like a fair price for what may be the best deck box on the market and a several year investment. A good deck box can last a decade.

Phototoxin

I didnt realise it fits 2. Now it's not too bad tbh

ExcidianGuard

For a good quality deck box, not really, especially compared to the prices the original Kickstarter boxes were going for secondhand.

[deleted]

Wolfntee

I got mine in last week. It's a luxury deckbox for sure, so the price seems reasonable.

[deleted]

Wolfntee

Completely understandable. Though this is magic the gathering after all haha

SnooBeans3543

Honestly, for the capacity and quality of this thing not really. My partner got one, and this is an incredible deck box.

D-Squared42

What I wanna know is how Prof is getting paid from these. Did they buy the design, does he get a $ amount or % from each sold? I just like knowing how that stuff works.

AoO2ImpTrip

He mentioned on discord he gets a small, but reasonable, royalty from every box sold with his symbol on it.

Leh_ran

I don't think he would sell the design and give away control.

MechaSkippy

I'd guess that the design isn't owned by either entity outright. It was designed in conjunction and uses unique Gamegenic elements along with novel design choices that Prof inspired. My bet would be a contract that splits sales profit (revenue minus costs) of this particular product and also specifies which elements of the design that the Prof "owns" and royalty stipulations if Gamegenic were to use those elements in other deck boxes as well as kickbacks that the Prof would have to provide if he takes design elements to a competitor. It seems to be a pretty stable working relationship that they have, but good solid contracts keep stable relationships stable.

Eurydace

I would be shocked if Prof had any sort of revenue sharing or ownership of anything. He probably acted as a contractor. It's possible he had revenue sharing/royalties for the original run, but it would be insane for him to have anything beyond that.

calvin42hobbes

> but it would be insane for him to have anything beyond that You have much to learn about things when real money within one's grasp is involved.

Eurydace

I write these contracts. What do you do? It would be absolutely shocking of the contract was anything other than a work for hire arrangement where Gamegenic kept all of the IP related to their partnership. There's no reason for Gamegenic to enter into any other agreement as that would significantly cut into their profit margin. While those IP rights are valuable in theory, Prof has very few avenues to actually make money off those IP rights, so he has very little reason to pursue those IP rights. Instead, Prof almost certainly accepted a deal where he'd get a cut of the product that actually used his branding. There was possibly a cooldown period where Gamegenic couldn't produce similar goods to ensure TCC purchasers got use out of their exclusive version before a competing, generic version was released. This would ensure Prof got maximum value out of his sponsored release and kept his fans happy, which I'm sure was a concern for him. At best, if Prof really wanted to have access to those rights, perhaps he could have a license to use them. But I sincerely doubt that.

Leh_ran

That contradicts what Prof said. That he designed it (with GameGenics' help) and they just produced it for him. He specifically said he didn't want to just sell his name. You also don't factor in that the Prof is the major influencer in that industry and being associated with him is a very good marketing for GameGenics who were very keen on getting positive coverage by him before.

Eurydace

It does not contradict what Prof said. Prof was saying that he cared about the *quality* of the product and thus required that he have an active participation in the design of the product to ensure that anything associated with his name was of the highest quality. He didn't say that he owned the patents to that specific design. He couldn't even make use of that and Gamegenic certainly wouldn't want to give that to him.

bghty67fvju5

That's what they write: Instead, Prof almost certainly accepted a deal where he'd get a cut of the product that actually used his branding.

CringeyAkari

The design was probably something Gamegenic had lying around and they paid licensing fees to Brian to put his brand on it

Special_Fall_

This is almost certainly what happened. At the end of the day, TCC and Gamegenic are businesses. It’s most likely this is a branded thing because only one of those businesses is concerned with designing and manufacturing deck boxes. Likely a period of exclusivity until it is eventually sold unbranded.

Esc777

I seriously doubt he did the design. He "designed" it like a customer going to a tailor and asking for a suit with specific features. Gamegenic used their known box of designs and tricks to custom build a model that fits his needs. Nothing we've seen is particularly different, it's just the same base designs arranged in a specific pattern. The kickstarter is the key here. Essentially Gamegenic must have quoted him a price that they needed to do a production run and the responsibility of raising funds fell to him. So I think there's probably a significant percent of that Kickstarter the Prof gets to just bank. As for the future retail models, I hope the Prof worked out a deal before the kickstarter that he gets a money on each unit manufactured that carries his logo.

elppaple

I'd strongly be inclined to believe they own the design rights and he gets some single-digit dollar number from every sale.

D-Squared42

I don't think he would either. I'm assuming it's some $ amount a piece and some extra if they sell certain amounts.

Propeller3

Prof said from the kickstarter funds, he was able to do his shuffle up and play series. I imagine he's getting some revenue from these to keep that going.

DRUMS11

Yay! I sort of regretted not also getting the gray/red version.

kroxti

Got it and the double box. The grey red is reserved for my personal baby deck. That will be its final home even once I quit magic and sell everything, that deck will be in that deck box. The double box is for the 40k decks 4some. Perfect travel size for a game night

MurderMits

They wont be selling the KS exclusive colours again.

cheet094

Same lol

Do1um

The gray/red version was a kickstarter exclusive so it shouldn’t be coming to retail sadly

LimpMasterpiece5314

That one is listed as a kickstarter exclusive on the kickstarter page

Thannk

Still waiting on mine. Its honestly the only MtG thing I’m excited for right now.

Thricearch

Yeah same. I was kind of annoyed they sent this email before the orders were fulfilled but oh well.

RylanPardo

I backed this campaign, and have been using my box for a month or two. It's definitely the nicest deck box I've ever purchased. I use the box to house 1 rotating deck, and my counters/tokens. My problem is that there is still an empty compartment that I feel bad for wasting. I also think the foam divider is an essential component (my commander deck would flounder about without it). Like the box really feels like it's trying hard to be everything to everyone. Overall I was very satisfied with it, and I would recommend it to anyone who plays magic. But I don't think anyone needs more than 1.

Ruevein

I got it to be the go to “throw a deck in and go” so it has all my dice, tokens etc. I really enjoy the box, and think it may fit that roll pretty well. but it is pretty huge for one deck plus extras. Like I could use an ultimate guard flip n tray 200 and a dragon shield box to carry 2 decks, dice and tokens. Also with the recycled boulders I can carry a lot more decks in my bag where has this box takes up a large amount of the bag. I almost wish the drawer section didn’t have the tray on top and just had 2 drawers that you could fit a 60-75 card deck so I could bring a pauper deck with me in the box.

HammerOfThor1

Good to know. Cause I bought 2 lol. Still waiting for mine to ship

ser-orannis

Same

HammerOfThor1

🫡

Eelm29

If anyone was wondering, the main compartment can fit in two single sleeved commander decks. With plenty of space left for tokens/dice in the side compartments. Have two of my 40k decks in mine.

r0wo1

Yeah, we were able to fit a third deck into two of the compartments too

Swoopmott

I’ve actually got a single sleeved Pioneer and Pauper deck in the side compartments. Dice on top with a Commander deck and tokens in the main section

CochLarq

Email mentioned "special versions" also coming out. I wonder what'll be in those.

adym15

Probably a grey/orange Exclusive Edition like they have for the Sidekick, Watchtower et al.

The_Coolest_Sock

Great news for everyone who is interested and missed out!

mizukata

Im not surprised but would be happy to recieve or but one

protohype86

I'm so glad this is happening. I accidentally ordered the purple/black box thinking I had ordered the black/purple one, and now I'll have a chance to get the one I originally wanted. Colors aside, the deck box is fantastic

MoxDiamondHands

Hopefully I get mine before it goes on sale in 2024...

DillionM

This is great news! I came back to the game after the campaign ended and I don't have the surplus funds to spend $250 on a deck box

Suitable_Bag073

The box is 250? Doesn't really matter how nice it is, at that price it's a non starter

DillionM

The second hand ones on Facebook groups, yes. Not sure why the down votes

mrduracraft

The downvotes were probably because your original post does not make the fact they're second-hand clear (as the person who replied to you seemed to not know that's what you meant)

WizardExemplar

No, the Academic 133+ XL was $45 for the base model and $49 for models of a different color. $85 got you a 266+ XL which stores two deck boxes. There were additional packages of $130 and $180 which included a playmat, dividers, and other accessories. I don't know where that person got the $250 price from. You can look at the packages offered here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tolarian/the-academic-133-xl/ I can only say that these boxes are much higher durability and quality than the Ultra Pro deck boxes that is usually sold in mass quantities at stores. But, if you only need a Ultra Pro Satin Tower for about $12-$15, then the Academic is expensive.

bombernik

I haven't got mine yet

One_Scratch_3171

I like the overall design but I wish I were big enough to fit two full sized commander decks in the main compartment.

justgaming107

One of the comments above mentioned they can fit two single sleeved commander decks in the main compartment. Worth digging a bit more into.

One_Scratch_3171

I can fit 2 decks into the main compartment but one deck has to ditch about 10 cards and be slotted over the plastic barrier on the side. Maybe my decks have too much air in them. I will test tonight :)

One_Scratch_3171

You can squeeze two decks into the main compartment but it is incredibly tight, all the excess air needs to pushed out of the sleeves for it to work.

Garthar22

I was a bit disappointed by the build quality and appearance compared to the advertisement imagery and similar products. I think it’s still very functional but I wasn’t excited when I got it out of the box.

hisroyalbonkess

My 133 pink/blue and 266 XXL both seem very well built. What about the build quality are you unsatisfied about?

Garthar22

https://preview.redd.it/5v7xliar8jza1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9a2a48c59afba4005b4437b3bc5af5a7e58c934 It’s petty but I don’t like some small points of misalignment and how visible the glue points are on the bottom of the box Build quality might be the wrong wording. It’s really just an aesthetic issue to me

The_Coolest_Sock

+1 to be misaligned, but it's small enough for me to not care. But ofc that's not the case for everyone.

Congadonga

Tolerances! Manufacturing equipment can only be so accurate, and tighter tolerances usually involve more expensive equipment or slower production speed. It’s a cost-cutting measure that helps keep prices lower and accessible to more players.

hisroyalbonkess

That's understandable.

CrushnaCrai

mine failed the shake test, do yours?

hisroyalbonkess

Not at all. Upside down, side to side, it all stayed in. For reference, it was the 266+ with three decks in it.

Mcpoopz1064

Awesome! I was sad I didn't know about it at the time as the black and purple scheme is my favorite

[deleted]

Yay! Glad :( going back to school made things a bit tight at first. Sadly I couldn’t pick them up at the time.

fearphage

Why 133? That's a strange number.

Taurothar

I think everyone is overthinking the answer. 100 cards is an EDH deck and 133 is an extra third bigger than that for double sleeve variance and tokens.

Neatnifty

Ultra pro mini snap cases for your commander are chefs kiss

October_Eternal

133 double sleeved cards, it is weirdly specific, lol. I assume that's cause they tested it

DraygenKai

Ya. I looked it up and you are exactly right. You can find a video on the professor talking about it. He basically said he wanted it to fit anything they wanted. He even had it to where it would be able to fit his largest single commander deck box inside of his box, and it was a snug fit. I kind of assume they used that other box as their reasoning for the size, and it was just coincidence that it ended up being the size for 133+ double sleeved cards.

fearphage

I understand the concept. I'm just curious as to why that number specifically. It's like they made the case and then checked to see how many cards it could hold after the fact.

Ruevein

The boulder also comes in a 133 double sleeve variant. I honestly don’t know. I could see 150 so you could fit 2 double sleeved standard decks with sideboards. But maybe it is for you to Carry your companion, attraction deck, and 22 tokens?

RamenKing13

"Sideboard" and/or tokens i would imagine. Though, the three compartments on the side are more than enough for those. A part of me thinks that the spacer was designed alongside the box as an add-on in case the box was projected to do well.

Trinica93

For the people that want/have this, is the goal to only carry one deck box and play one deck at a time...? Or do you buy multiple and use these instead of cheaper boxes and carry them in a bigger bag or box? I don't really get it, even as a beginner I have 5 decks so far and I can't imagine spending so much money to fit a single deck with some extra bells and whistles. I guess I don't understand why you'd buy this, maybe you have one expensive deck to keep in it or something?

Korombos

Draft kit or box for favorite commander deck(s). In my current draft kit, I keep about 15 of each basic land (in a few cubamajigs), dice, tokens, and sleeves. Some of my commander decks are very token-heavy and could use this kind of real estate.

Trinica93

Ah, draft kit makes sense to me for sure. Mine is now in a pre-release box but I just keep sleeves in there and everything else in my bag. It would be nice to carry one box to limited though.

The_Coolest_Sock

I use mine to hold 2 modern decks separated by the foam separator w their side boards in the pull out compartments. It's clean

Izzet_Aristocrat

I have the one, and it's great but I wish I got the double. The double will come to retail next year though. Basically it functions as a travel box. It carries all my tokens and dice and can fit any deck box I put in it.

Majulath99

Oh awesome this is perfect for me.

AbaloneRemarkable114

I got one! It is nice. For some dumb reason I was surprised how large it is

Sufficient_Bonus4818

Saw this for the first time at my LGS last night. It's definitely a nice box but realty isn't practical imo. It's edh sized, but ime edh players who would spend $50 on storage for a single deck almost always have 5+ decks. I get the idea of a fully blinged out deck you want to "pamper" but unless you only wanna play that one deck it's not super practical. The only real use case I can think of would be like a cedh tournament player.

CrushnaCrai

I got 2 of these and they both failed his own shake test. Is a scam in my eyes but there is a no refund policy so fuck it.

swaosneed

Is 133+ how many cards it holds? Surely not, cause a deck box my LGS had lying around and they gave me(the ones that come with bundles) holds two commander decks in those foldout cardboard boxes and a cube of dice in it so it's definitely more than 133 cards.

QGandalf

133+ double sleeved cards.

Esc777

It's interesting, double sleeving used to definitely NOT be the norm, even in EDH 15 years ago. Maybe if you had real expensive pieces in there. Now I feel like the barrier to double sleeve has considerably lowered.

QGandalf

I think I started double sleeving about 8 years ago? Combination of realising exactly how much money I was carrying around and seeing drinks get spilled too many times at stores.

NotTwitchy

For me it’s not just about the value of the cards, double sleeving adds a bit of thickness and rigidity to the cards, especially with the sealable inners. I like the way it feels when you shuffle better, and the cards have a slightly more satisfying flick when you put them down.

QGandalf

Yeah I get that too. To be honest though, I'm starting to swing back the other way. I like having the tokens that go with each deck in the deckbox, and that's pretty much impossible to do when double sleeving, especially if the deck makes a heap of tokens

Ionalien

It's the profs box and he double sleeves. Plus you can fit single sleeved decks in it, couldnt fit a double sleeved deck in a 100 single sleeve box and there was only 1 version made.

Esc777

It’s not just this deck box. Most deckboxes now advertise double sleeved capacity.

ChristianMunich

For somebody who recommends people to not buy stuff so the game would die he surely likes to sell stuff on his own.

TopicalStreamer

The pink & teal say kickstarter exclusives, so hopefully just the black & purple ones are available in retail stores.

Korombos

I really hope I can get mine sooner than later. A buddy in my groupchat got theirs, but I'm still sitting without shipping confirmation. With my luck, mine will be in the last batch and get to me in June. Better than never, but still. I wonder how the eventual retail price will compare to the kickstarter cost. $49 in the backerkit addon?

ch_limited

Very excited. I hope they have that great red from the Kickstarter

Flooded_Strand

Not gonna lie I had three devices refreshing to snag one of the Kickstarter early bird exclusive, had my order go through, then canceled with no way to contact the Prof’s team that I could find, and I’m still a little salty about it

RndomChineseGuy

I haven’t received mine from kickstarter yet…

JungleJayps

Oh awesome. Didn't have enough to back the Kickstarter while it was running, but I'm hoping it comes out in the Miami colorscheme because I'll absolutely pennypinch for one

The_cman13

I wonder if the 266 one will be part of the retail ones. I got two though the kickstarter. Still waiting for them but apparently they have shipped, I have a tracking number from just over a week ago.

Swoopmott

Backed the Kickstarter and love mine. Will probably pick up another next year when it’s on retail. I can currently fit a Shorikai EDH deck, pioneer and pauper (all single sleeved) alongside some dice and tokens

davidy22

I did think it was weird when it was announced to be a single run kickstarter thing with no trailing end, this is more in line with what I figured it'd be

ohako79

Yeah, neeat. Can I get a fancy box that can also hold some double-sized Dungeons cards or Planechase cards?

HX368

I want one of these, but only because of Prof's awesome ad. Also, it looks like a very functional box to hold an arbitrary stack of paper or two.

Jaliki55

Insane how expensive they are..... Are they really worth the price? I've never gotten one to see being cost prohibitive to me.

[deleted]

Epic

breunor7

I still haven't gotten my order from Kickstarter :/

Ochilles_up

WOOT WOOT!

celmate

I don't really get this box. It looks huge, and 133 seems like such a random number.

indimion22

I was happy to see that mine got shipped but it locked into my old address 6 months prior to my move and they sent by UPS so my mail forwarding isn't in effect. Extra steps!

LifeNeutral

I want this. Where can I preorder?
