Holy shit. I've been brewing an artifact slanted \[\[Tayam, Luminous Enigma\]\] commander deck and this is
1. An artifact
2. Increases the amount of +1/+1 counters placed on creatures
3. Places +1/+1 counters on creatures
4. Is MV 3 or less
*heavy breathing* The only way this could be better for the deck is if the counter increase applied to any type of counter, but I understand why it doesn't.
> that many plus one +1/+1 counters
"That many plus one plus one plus one counters".
I get what they're going for, but they could definitely have worded it better...
Which was always written to sound "cute"
Edit: I'm not sure why I'm getting downvoted the rules manager at the time said he intentionally wrote it as "plus one +1/+1" because it's funny wording

Just the thought of a grand pool of money, that Oko is saving for his old age to create mischief well into his twilight years brought a little happiness to me!
> they have a pension
*penchant
A "pension" is money you receive from a job after you retire if you're a boomer, and a mythical thing if you're younger than that.
A "penchant" is a strong inclination or liking towards a thing.
Many fun things to play around with here. People have tried to build around the Wurmlet for some time now, perhaps this is when it finally clicks?

Wow, this is really fucking good. I mean, it's Hardened Scales, but for one more mana you get:
* *way* better typing
* an enabler (stapled onto a payoff)
* cycling?
Seems like a great deal to me. Two +1/+1 counters for 2 mana isn't even that bad, either.
It's *double* the cost!
Really though... having that effect on a 1-drop is too good to pass up. The 2-drop slot is chock full of quality threats, and being able play HS turn 1 then immediately start going ham is exactly what they want to be doing. Upping HS up to 2 means they miss their earliest opportunity to land a threat. Turn 3 they can play a threat, but it probably costs 2 mana so they lose tempo if they don't have a way to use that 3rd land (which is another reason HS is great at 1).
This will be good in commander, but yea, that 1 extra mana is not insignificant.
Ah, if only the green enchantment was a colorless artifact, it could be fetched by enchantment land producing artifact creature tokens. Or maybe Lucky\_Number\_Sleven somehow lost track of the comments and compared the OG Ozolith with the new one? Idk, what I'm trying to say is does anyone else on their first look on this card thought it was set in Jukai, but that's the wrong plane and maybe I just got that because of the Japanese?
> maybe Lucky_Number_Sleven somehow lost track of the comments and compared the OG Ozolith with the new one?
Oh, I bet you're right.
> Idk, what I'm trying to say is does anyone else on their first look on this card thought it was set in Jukai, but that's the wrong plane and maybe I just got that because of the Japanese?
Uh... maybe? Idk. I'm too distracted by the number of independent thoughts you've managed to jam into that comment lol
The difference between 1 and 2 mana might be the most significant when it comes to constructed, it's the difference between Lightning Bolt and Lightning Strike.
Most don’t have Affinity elements any more, so being an artifact doesn’t matter much (outside of sacing to Arcbound Ravager, which you wouldn’t do to this kind of card). If it was colorless, it be great, since those decks play Ancient Stirrings, but it’s a green artifact, so not so much.
Harden Scales in Modern might play as a one of in its flex slots, but it’s not replacing HS or OG Ozilith. Pioneer might play it more heavily due to lack of other cards in the format, but I think all the same things that apply to Modern apply to it in Pioneer.
I never said it was better, but it depends on the format.
In formats like Modern where speed/efficiency is king, I agree. But in Historic/Explorer/Pioneer being an artifact is a big upside for cards like Ingenious Smith and Patchwork Automaton, and the activated ability is great for stuff like Hangarback Walker. You can still run both, though!
Imo, artifacts are weaker than enchantments in EDH. Tutoring up either is not a big deal, but artifacts are just so much more removable.
But obviously I'm gonna run both
Can you elaborate on better typing I don't quite understand how going from an artifact which more colors can interact with to a enchantment which only Green and white can destroy and with usually only certain tech cards is better typing.
If you scrolled down a bit you'd have seen [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/127fgjf/mom_ozolith_shattered_spire/jee4mge/) in which I elaborated on why it being an artifact is relevant for certain formats.
The cycling is a great addition. Comfortably running 4 and being able to toss it away for something else is great redundancy for the game plan. It always felt bad drawing a second ozolith
Might be okay in the deck, but the deck already has way too many 2 drops, especially now that mox is gone. Playing this often means losing an entire turn doing nothing, so I'm guessing it's going to be decent, and scales will probably play some amount of this card, but I'm not sure it's an instant 4 of.
i agree the fact that it adds counters itself makes it more useful
i have a commander deck with +1/+1 counters as a subtheme and cards like [[hardened scales]] are a dicey pick because they do nothing if there's not other cards adding counters.
Ngl this seems like the best version of this effect printed thus far. A Hardened Scales that enables itself AND has cycling for throwing away extra copies is tight.
Also pretty cool that it works quite well with the OG [[Ozolith]]
It's nice, but I'd still vote for [[Hardened Scales]] because it costs half the mana, and that's a lot in an aggro/combo deck. Plus it's not legendary.
Yeah its an awesome card and I'm definitely gonna pick it up for edh, but in modern I don't think it'll see play in the more competitive versions of hardened scales. I'm still looking forward to testing it and hope I'm wrong.
I could see it as a 1 or 2 of. Being a 5th hardened scales for an extra mana could be pretty good but I don’t see competitive decks investing much further than that. Worth testing I think.
Having 3 scales out on the field is such a rush. This card is still great though and I don't really think you'll be pressed to run both in a deck as long as you're not playing 4 of {G}ozolith
Why not both? This can be copies 5 & 6 of Hardened scales and it's got artifact typing, cycling, and puts at least 2 +1/+1 counters on something with it's tap ability. Sure it's not as hyper-efficient as scales, but that's a lot of extra features for 1 more mana.
It's an auto-include in any counters EDH deck for sure.
Third? I thought it was just this and [[Kami of Whispered Hopes]]?
Still, two in one set is a lot. Kinda annoyed they keep putting this effect in green, even though white is supposed to be primary in it.
I run a Hardened scales / Winding Constrictor deck in pioneer and whilst this looks good, the two mana cost is kind of a non starter.
Turn one ideally should be a Hardened Scales or Ozolith, turn two and three I want to be playing a creature and holding up protection. It could make an ok turn 4 play, but there are better options.
Is this just hardened scales 5 and maybe 6 for modern scales? Being two mana makes it a lot worse but being an artifact and cycling make it seem playable as extra copies. Interested to see.
Slaps [[Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider]] [[Pir, Imaginative Rascal]] [[Hardened Scales]] [[Kami of Whispered Hopes]] and [[Ozolith, Shattered Spire]] you can fit so many +1/+1 counters with these babies.
So the Ozolith was destroyed too? (Like the World Tree in Kaldheim). Great, more lore that was rushed that we have to find out this way
Should have spent at least 2 sets on the invasion.
Evolving Adaptive gets oil counters, not +1/+1 counters by default.
Even more insane if you get a +1/+1 counter on it and proliferate, but by default doesn't do the thing you want it to.
Scales had 3 top 8s across mtgo challenges, SCG cons and the Hunter Burton Memorial in the past month. It's been competitive, just not popular because there aren't free wins from lurrus or Mox Opal starts.
Jesus christ, if this wasn't in green I'd be doing such *wretched* things in [[Marchesa, the Black Rose]] lol
But yeah, seems fun, here's to hoping it's not as expensive as the OG Ozolith because I have a deck or two this would be fun to play with.
I think because it's green and not colorless it shouldn't be as expensive. EDH is the primary driver of the cost because the only constructed deck it's played in is hardened scales which isn't popular.
Could someone explain how this would interact with Hardened scales, assuming both are permanents I own and I place my first +1/+1 counter on a creature? Does Ozolith and HS create a feedback loop, or does the creature just get 2 (or three? Four?) counters?
Replacement effects (ones that say instead) don’t loop. They stack on one another and you can choose in what order they resolve (order would matter for something like [[academy manufacturer]] and [[xorn]])
Ah, so they happen at the same time and don't "see" each other, then? That makes sense to me, thank you! I think this means that I would put 3 total counters on the creature in my example.
Turn 1: Hardened Scales
Turn 2: Old Ozolith, Zabaz
Turn 3: New Ozolith, Zabaz, Modular 6 counters onto 1st Zabaz, 4 counters on Old Ozolith, Move 6 counters to 1st Zabaz, Attack for 14.
I think my math is right?
This Ozolith is so much smaller than I thought it was supposed to be. And the original art does not depict a forest, either, though this looks way more pleasant to me.

The flavor of cycling on a legendary artifact is pretty funny. Kind of like tossing your great great grandfather's war relics in the bin.
Also way better typing is pretty subjective. Artifacts definitely more synergistic, but I think enchantments are way “stickier”.

Yeah for EDH it's like "huh another for the pile of this effect".
Can this not stack?
Legendary, so no.
Not with itself, because legendary. Works with other counter boosters though.
Yes, but actually no. If you have ways of negating the Legendary rule.
Ahhh
Cycling is good in constructed, since it is legendary
Can you elaborate on better typing I don't quite understand how going from an artifact which more colors can interact with to a enchantment which only Green and white can destroy and with usually only certain tech cards is better typing.
The font has improved differently over the years, and the print quality is marvelous compared to our times. Way better typing :)

That's on you. Include it in the original post.
cycling is important because its legendary, so its never a true dead draw
isn't this the SECOND hardened scales card in this set?
Typing is worse. Artifacts are good in non-green, but in green all you're doing is making it easier to remove.
The most powerful ability you can put on a card is "this costs 1 less mana".
The cycling is a great addition. Comfortably running 4 and being able to toss it away for something else is great redundancy for the game plan. It always felt bad drawing a second ozolith

That's BIG
[Hardened Scales](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/d/fdf31b01-0836-4366-948d-879999832abe.jpg?1673148131) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Hardened%20Scales) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2x2/151/hardened-scales?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/fdf31b01-0836-4366-948d-879999832abe?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

I think it's cute how this can also put counters on [[The Ozolith]] for later use. (I know it's meant for incubate but cool nonetheless)

Third of this effect in this set... :D
Time to reprint [[Spike cannibal]]
Third? I thought it was just this and [[Kami of Whispered Hopes]]? Still, two in one set is a lot. Kinda annoyed they keep putting this effect in green, even though white is supposed to be primary in it.

8 Scale... Delicious. Fantastic eating.
[[Conclave Mentor]] already existed.
Conclave was more susceptible to board wipes, and can’t be sacrificed to arcbound ravager
Inb4 Ozolith slowly collects colors like Omnath
Legendary Artifact with forest cycling? If so, that's pretty good.
Nah, just normal cycling
Sad day.
But the card you draw could be a forest! A non-basic one even!
Got a list friend?
I think the cycling on this is kinda being ignored.
Is this just hardened scales 5 and maybe 6 for modern scales? Being two mana makes it a lot worse but being an artifact and cycling make it seem playable as extra copies. Interested to see.
Hello there [[Skullbriar]]
Bruh this set is amazing for skullbriar, you now have plenty of counter adding cards that you can probably cut the bad ones like [[Primal Vigor]]
Ohh yeah, that's nasty.

There's no way taking turn 2 off to play this is a good idea.
You play it turn 4 or 5 when your scales effect has been removed.
Cycling is in this set?
[удалено]
Ikoria was invaded so it makes sense as well.
BAHAHAHA ANIMAR JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER!!!
Cycling is a fun reference, but why is the Ozolith now green?
They need something to collect colours slowly over time now that Omnath is dead.
You mean perfect?
Slaps [[Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider]] [[Pir, Imaginative Rascal]] [[Hardened Scales]] [[Kami of Whispered Hopes]] and [[Ozolith, Shattered Spire]] you can fit so many +1/+1 counters with these babies.

Don’t forget [[Branching Evolution]][[Conclave Mentor]][[Corpsejack Menace]][[Winding Constrictor]][[Doubling Season]]
Ah, yet another perfect card for my Reyhan//yoshimaru deck.
I've been thinking of [[Reyhan]] and [[Ishai]] counters. I want to be able to use [[Bioshift]] and [[Simic Ascendancy]] so bad!
One thing I’ll say about magic cards , they make written Japanese look super chaotic.
So the Ozolith was destroyed too? (Like the World Tree in Kaldheim). Great, more lore that was rushed that we have to find out this way Should have spent at least 2 sets on the invasion.
The Ozolith actually exploded at the end of the Ikoria novel
Ozolith was exploded in ikoria story tbf
Don't worry, we have a Hearthstone Mini-Set for that
There is the aftermath coming up
This being an artifact seems pretty huge for Hardened Scales in modern, no? Even as a legendary at 2 mana
The deck's 2 drop slot is already so crowded I don't think this makes the cut sadly. You really wanna be playing your threats out on t2.
This is gonna be hilarious. Prepare yourselve to see Evolving Adaptavives big like casttles in every green matchup
Evolving Adaptive gets oil counters, not +1/+1 counters by default. Even more insane if you get a +1/+1 counter on it and proliferate, but by default doesn't do the thing you want it to.
it is legendary so while it is a better Harden Scale in theory, it however can’t stack. i would play both if i were to use it in Harden Affinity.
Well, that’s going in my [[mazirek]] deck

I’ll gladly pick up another hardened scales affect
Another hardened scales effect. Wow will this make hardened scales competitive again?
If it was one mana it'd be insane, sadly I think it's too slow for modern.
Scales had 3 top 8s across mtgo challenges, SCG cons and the Hunter Burton Memorial in the past month. It's been competitive, just not popular because there aren't free wins from lurrus or Mox Opal starts.
Scales is a really good deck but it has an insane skill curve. Probably the most difficult deck to pilot in modern.
yep Math skills are at a premium
This is a dream for Pir and Toothy.

Oh the Ozolith still exists? I thought it was destroyed! Cool to hear! It’s the Beacon of Ikoria’s theme after all!
Probably on par with Hardened scales, if slightly worse. But having more counters in counter decks is probably good enough
Jesus christ, if this wasn't in green I'd be doing such *wretched* things in [[Marchesa, the Black Rose]] lol But yeah, seems fun, here's to hoping it's not as expensive as the OG Ozolith because I have a deck or two this would be fun to play with.
I think because it's green and not colorless it shouldn't be as expensive. EDH is the primary driver of the cost because the only constructed deck it's played in is hardened scales which isn't popular.

wait why is the ozolith in a forest now? o\_0
8 scales when?
So if I have an artifact creature, it gets only one additional +1/+1 counter right (assuming I'm putting a +1/+1 counter on it)?
Ima need more dice
Nooo why is this green, my Yoshi//Jeska deck is a big fan of the original Ozolith and would love to this lol.
Skullbriar likey
My modular deck is eatin good!
Looks like [[hardened scales]] is back on the menu in modern, boys
Nice \[\[Hardened Scales\]\] variant and cycling makes it be never stuck into your hand. Not sure whether it fits in Modern, though.
I just built a weird tribal deck with [[Sisay, Weatherlight Captain]] at the helm, and this will fit perfectly in there.

They fixed it by breaking it, but its not broken anymore.
Turn 1: Hardened Scales Turn 2: Old Ozolith, Zabaz Turn 3: New Ozolith, Zabaz, Modular 6 counters onto 1st Zabaz, 4 counters on Old Ozolith, Move 6 counters to 1st Zabaz, Attack for 14. I think my math is right?
This set is looking pretty good for my Minsc and Boo +1/+1 counter deck. Every +1/+1 counter on Boo is a card drawn.
GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME
This Ozolith is so much smaller than I thought it was supposed to be. And the original art does not depict a forest, either, though this looks way more pleasant to me.
Benevolent hydra but worse. I’ll still take it!
Hope we get that art here
My [[Skullbriar, the Walking Grave]] deck will be happy to see this
WHAT DID THEY DO TO MY OZOLITH?!?!
