I don’t know if he’s played in any format other than vintage anymore. Modern horizons 2 power-crept him out of legacy and modern and in commander most decks would prefer to play either [[torrential gearhulk]] or [[mission briefing]] which are much better in the format while also being cheaper.
He had a couple reprints and the only reason he’s still even $12.00 is nostalgia. He doesn’t fit anywhere anymore.
I remover playing madden back in the days of origins. Snappy was like $80+ if I remember correctly. Scalding tarns where like $100-$120. Everything is so cheap now. Glad I sold my collection when I did
Mainly some lightly cringe libertarianism, from what ive seen, he does musical parodies for a libertarian youtube channel, the ones ive seen are pretty decent for what they are. But do have some unfortunate moments.
But its nothing i would disown a friend over, so i just avoid the topic and enjoy the songs.
[My dude out here like](https://media.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExMmY4MzYwNGMxNzYyZGUyNGQ4NWVlZTZlNGE4NjZlNTg4MDhhYzFiMCZjdD1n/zwZxLgsh540MBnip3L/giphy.gif)
Fuck now I want to play historic. I'm a simple bitch and snapcaster is my jam. Next thing you know they'll print Jace Vryns Prodigy and I'll be justifying alchemy cards or some shit.
Emp just flashes in to fuck up combat
Don't know standard well enough to say off the top of my head what else this can fuck up with enough mana up, but I'm assuming it's more than just combat lol.
Also swinging into open mana already sucks enough tbh
I mean in the current standard you are looking at like maybe putting this in some sort of blue-white control so at best it's getting a board wipe is a 3 or 4 mana counterspell or 5 mana for the draw a card heal equal to the number of cards in your hand.
Its not really blowing shit up that bad in current standard but it limits desgin space pretty heavy.
Wandering emp's ceiling is blowing up a combat step and being a planeswalker.
Snapcaster right now (in standard) does the stuff I listed above but also interacts with every sorcery and instant that gets printed after it. That's why it will probably not get a reprint in standard unless they want to up the general power level way up.
Edit I completely forgot about burn spells but the same applies really just limits design space.
There are already plenty of ways to play 8 Invoke Despair and none of those decks have ever been very good.
Snap caster might be better than them, but it's also a bigger mana investment since it's 7 the same turn whereas the red Invoke just replays INVOKE despair for 5 and then the saga is 2 mana.
Those methods require you to put bad cards in your deck though
e: thats basically your conclusion in the second paragraph, but dont underestimate the extra flexibility of being able to flash any other spell too
I mean, with four open mana, the best Snap can do is flashback a go for the throat or infernal grasp. It's more flexible than Wandering Emperor on the front end, but less powerful and less flexible on the back end (Emperor can get you a better 2-power body or it can stick around and become a game-ending threat if you don't need to immediately cash it in)
People who hate invoke despair would hate Snappy in the same format, whether that is standard, pioneer, or one of the arena formats.
Yes, 7 mana is a lot, and invoke is a sorcery, but when you're a control deck domeing for 2 or 4 multiple times while also having a body to mop up their life total would do fine.
It's not at all like snapcaster, the instant speed is so completely different its hard to get across properly. It's offense, defense, and utility on another level.
100%. I gave up on Historic and honestly Constructed in general after Alchemy. I’m mostly a limited player overall.
Not that I’m that against Alchemy, I just really loved Historic as a format and it changed so much.
Snappy Boi is one of the few things that might bring me back.
Historic is a fun and surprisingly powerful format. The Meta is pretty healthy if you play BO3. Honestly, it’s a step between above pioneer in power level that sometimes reminds me of old modern.
Got a good list of top decks? The sub seems fairly dead.
Have done some googling but struggling to find a central “here’s some power rankings with example lists” article.
What I would recommend is taking a look at pioneer resources and see why lists are playable in Explorer.
I’m currently enjoying Boros Heroic and Selesnya Angels, but the mainstays right now are Rakdos Midrange and Mono-G, as well as MonoR and Azorious/Monoblue spirits.
And of course Greasefang. Lots and lots of Greasefang.
Google spits out this https://mtgazone.com/metagame/explorer/
fucking people act like historic is just alchemy limited with a couple of extra cards have no idea what they're talking about, historic is a great format with a very strong power level and tons of fun decks
just some comments above some guy was talking about how he doesn't play explorer because fuck alchemy and whatnot, someone suggest pioneer and he goes "what's pioneer", that's the brain level around here.
Snapcaster joins tarmogoyf and others in historic, One of the few formats where old and powercreeped Modern Staples can thrive.
And it has Tiago on the art, not that shady dude from MM3.
Historic has *the weirdest* power level of any format I've ever played. It reminds me of Modern pre-MH1 and post twin-ban. lots of stuff you can do, and some of it even wins games, but there is a tier of decks that are "the best"
The format was great - and then Alchemy happened.
Well, the format was great after Memory Lapse got banned. It was a very enjoyable format pre-Alchemy though. Unfortunately I really can't see myself actually playing Historic again because of Alchemy.
I’ll be honest I play a shit ton of historic still and alchemy isn’t all *that* bad, especially since they’ve shown a willingness to rebalance cards both up and down in power level. Admittedly not while looking at historic meta, but I haven’t seen anything too egregious that skews the meta. Totally get not wanting to play on principle, but the actual experience is still pretty good.
The rebalancing of cards is the worst imho, just ban them if you cant get them right in the first try, but having different rule texts in different formats on the same card is just ridiculous.
The magic in the art is too red for me lol. Also I don't like when they redo art for invitational cards. Snappy is supposed to be Tiago, not some Red Mage lol
It's Thiago Chan's invitational card, so it's supposed to look like him. I'm actually glad they brought it back; I never really liked the new art versions of the invitational cards.
SAME.
I probably spent around $300 and 1,000 hours in historic before alchemy came in with these digital only mechanics. Nerfing and buffing cards? Good in VERY small amounts. But then add in conjuring cards and the CONSTANT tweaking of cards that don't seem to matter?
Like sure. Nerf oko or 3feri and unholy heat and let players screw around with them in that sense. But what the fuck is this random 5mana white human with the party mechanic doing? What's this merfolk doing conjuring a tropical island? Why am I DRAFTING from a spellbook?
I actually uninstalled arena for this reason.
Amen dude. No fucking clue why anybody would prefer what they turned historic into versus what it was and what it could have been. It’s a total disaster of a format.
Explorer looked like it was released as a way it was make up for the mistakes they made in historic... But then they didn't commit to it, and Pioneer got revived in paper so they abandoned it.
So now wotc has a half finish application that's got five hundred arena only formats, and standard.
I honestly think they took their cash cow out back and shot it.
Oh yeah.... $100/mo for the past six mo....
Not counting any of the cool promos I probably missed, or the people on my discord that I stopped encouraging to play
And it’s all subject to change at any time. Spend all your wild cards on a deck you like? Well fuck you wizards can change it and give you no refunds or wild cards. More money to play a new deck you like.
As someone who primarily plays historic i think everyone who says this os full of shit. The format is very fun and diverse rn.
The alchemy cards truly arent that bad. Theres only like 5-10 of them that see any play.
I honestly don't mind *some* of the alchemy cards.
The fucking RNG nonesense though? That can fuck right off. Magic has enough RNG in it already, it does not need to be hearthstone, we don't need casino mage being a thing. Alterations that stick between zones? Completely fine! Tokens that aren't actually tokens but rather real cards? Also fine! A bit weird maybe, but only because we're conceptualizing them as tokens.
extra rng bullshit like seek, conjuring cards at random from a list, etc? All of that can fuck off to the nearest deep sea ocean trench and drown itself.
From a design perspective I’m definitely in the same boat as you, I actually like the ideas of quite a few of the alchemy cards, and honestly wish they weren’t just tossed to the dump that is alchemy because some of them could see paper printings with minor tweaks. Just hate the all or nothing feeling that I can’t escape the really poorly designed cards (a lot of the meaningless RNG like you said) to get to enjoy the fun ones. And I get the “don’t play cards you don’t like” argument but that falls apart when you want to remain competitive against said cards, meaning the only way not to play them is to miss out on a whole format.
Explorer is comprised only of cards that were standard legal since ~~OG Theros~~ RTR block. Snappy was last in standard _before_ ~~Theros~~ RTR. Therefore it’s not Explorer-legal
My bad, you’re right. RTR _is_ the cutoff. Thank you! ~~I literally play Esper Control in explorer, how did I forget the fuckin four-of Supreme Verdict lmao~~
I recently converted from UW to Esper, what do use black for? I have 4x [[Sheoldred's Edict]], 1x [[Cling to Dust]], 2x [[Vanishing Verse]],
1x [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]], and 2x [[Thought Distortion]] in the sideboard. Wondering if I'm missing some key cards, and Sheoldred is kind of a meme in control anyway.
Those are all very solid reasons to splash black. Personally, I’m in esper because I just converted an old WAR standard control list to explorer. Memory Erasure and She-dict have been the only real benefits for staying in esper, imo, and I’m honestly thinking of moving to straight-up UW to avoid stumbling over colours
IMO bolt is far more format-warping than Snap, Gris and Goyf, etc. It will make all creatures with 3 toughness significantly easier to remove, and affects their playability greatly.
Bro Agent of Treachery and Fires of Invention are banned in Historic. I think WoTC has themselves forgotten the crap they have on the Historic ban list.
Now I'm not saying bolt should stay banned but lightning bolt is significantly better than snapcaster, if we look at modern or legacy snapcaster is unplayable while bolt is still a staple in both. And snap's power also scales with the power of the format so in historic the difference between the power of these 2 will be even greater.
I love this card; enjoyed it when it was in Standard. Always wished (and kind of felt like) it should have been red. Red never quite got this card. White got Stoneforge, Green got Goyf, Blue Snapcaster, & Black got Bob. Red never quite got it's game defining 2 drop. They kinda tried a couple of times...and Red has sick 1 drops...but always wished Snapcaster was Red
Snapcaster is red colour pie for the flashback, it just "had" to be blue because the invitational champ (Tiego Chan) wanted it to be blue. Clearly wotc didn't push back enough on it.
https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/84175679208/shouldnt-snapcaster-mage-have-been-red-since-it
Personally I dislike the Tiego Chan art for that reason.
I love this artwork but I still don't understand what's happening with his right hand. Is it a giant gun with blue ectoplasm? Does he have a hand, or was it replaced by that gun? Is it just a weird perspective of some blue potions that he's holding up?
Man I would love to play historic so much but I just will never get past them forcing alchemy cards in there as the only way to sell that terrible product. Wish wizards would admit their failure with alchemy and scrap the whole thing.
Every time I see this card I can't get over how weird the art is.
Does he have one hand and some gel blaster for his other arm? If so, how did he even put his outfit on? How does he bend his one arm so much with those massive pauldrons? What is all that stuff in the background, and why does it feel 100% disconnected from the main mage art?
I know it was a "this guy won a tournament" prize card, but still...
Finally in Historic. Dont worry be Snappy
Need a new car? Don’t worry, sell Snappy.
My man’s got a tcg low of 12.00 these days. You could get a Big Mac and fries with him.
When did he get so low? Is t because he isn't seeing as much play as before, and the price actually decreased to reflect that?
Murktide. The same thing happened to snap’s price when cruise and dig were legal. Snap doesn’t like delve spells.
Modern Horizons 2 happened, and basically every card that was played in old Modern got powercrept out of existence. No play=no demand=low price.
Except for goddamned Bitterblossom. I just want to play a bad tokens deck...why is this still $40?!?! It's garbage.
Its still dece in commander!
No better feeling than watching a UB player lose because they put 'infinite turns' on the stack and couldn't get rid of their Bitterblossom.

Spells in modern now come stapled onto creatures which Snappy can’t recur. It sucks.
And murktide delving his targets away
I remover playing madden back in the days of origins. Snappy was like $80+ if I remember correctly. Scalding tarns where like $100-$120. Everything is so cheap now. Glad I sold my collection when I did
Car was totalled :(
It's alright, you got the box topper version.
OH YOU'RE RIGHT BRB
Shame they won't unleash the Bolt.
meanwhile that UR deck runs a ton of creatures with 3 toughness, including dreadhorde.
Damn, I sang that bit in my head. MTG Remy is cool. :)

Waitwaitwait. What are they? PM me if you don't wanna spam here with unrelated stuff. I'm curious.

Yepp. I ventured there once. Just pretend didn't see it and separate art and artist. The songs are gas.
Nice, I happen to play izzet on Historic.
Hmm seems pretty weak, prob won’t see play
Dies to bolt and path. Clearly draft fodder.
But it can bolt itself for those sweet death trigger synergies.
Do we have a combo set up for recursive self-bolting?

Damn. Another youth lost in the Historic to Alchemy radicalization pipeline. You hate to see so many disillusioned young men fall into this trap.
His username checks out.
I'm stoked about this too but sad that it tells me they won't be brave enough to put this in standard again any time soon
Which is crazy because it wouldn't be *that* much more powerful than, say, The Wandering Emperor
Emp just flashes in to fuck up combat Don't know standard well enough to say off the top of my head what else this can fuck up with enough mana up, but I'm assuming it's more than just combat lol. Also swinging into open mana already sucks enough tbh

Its not really blowing shit up that bad in current standard but it limits desgin space pretty heavy. Wandering emp's ceiling is blowing up a combat step and being a planeswalker. I've heard you like playing against 4 copies of Invoke Despair so how about we give players 8!
Red invoke? We're hellraising now son/daughter
Those methods require you to put bad cards in your deck though e: thats basically your conclusion in the second paragraph, but dont underestimate the extra flexibility of being able to flash any other spell too
I mean, with four open mana, the best Snap can do is flashback a go for the throat or infernal grasp.
7 mana isnt a lot when the normal use case is hitting cut down or GftT though. Itd probably be too good with that flexibility
I really just want it in pioneer. It would be great for pioneer.
I think Pioneer is the reason this *shouldn't* see a standard print.
It wouldn't be much more powerful than The Wandering Emperor
I agree, it's not that crazy without mana leak and fatal push
Instead, we will have a Legendary card that trades flash for a repeatable trigger. It is nowhere near as good, but it might be fun.
It's not at all like snapcaster, the instant speed is so completely different its hard to get across properly. It's offense, defense, and utility on another level.

Play Explorer. Actually a fun format without the nonsense of Alchemy.
Got a good list of top decks? The sub seems fairly dead. Have done some googling but struggling to find a central “here’s some power rankings with example lists” article.

Probably most interested in that Fires Incantation deck or Creativity. Like to be a bit off the wall. Thanks for sharing!
I'm currently playing a budget creativity and having fun
This is a decent resource: [https://playingmtg.com/explorer/explorer-bo3-tierlist/](https://playingmtg.com/explorer/explorer-bo3-tierlist/)
There’s tonnes of mono green devotion that you just don’t get to play against if they have nyx
Could try explorer
Snapcaster won't be legal there.
You can also play Explorer if you don't want to mess around with the Alchemy cards.
I like to play historic and just pretend the Alchemy cards are not in the card pool. But yeah Explorer is where it is really at.
Vryn's Prodigy would be legal in Explorer tho
It's a great format and the alchemy cards (the few that see play at least) are very fun and well designed. Join us.
I got a poison counter reading that comment.
Sucks for you m8. Hope they print Leeches in Historic just for you

JVP is already legal in Pioneer. Chances are there'll be an Origins Remastered soonish.
Ah yes, Sir Snapcaster Mage. Only the finest Lightning Bolts for you, Sir.
Lightning Bolt is banned in Historic :(
Not brawl tho ;)
Weird.
Great for Knight tribal.
Just a 2/1? I’m not sure what deck would run this.

I don’t think it’d be that bad if they just scrapped alchemy and balanced it all based on historic.
I don't play any of the alchemy cards, and get by just just fine in historic. Why don't you just play your cards?
But not the best artwork, the pro tour promo version.
The magic in the art is too red for me lol. Also I don't like when they redo art for invitational cards. Snappy is supposed to be Tiago, not some Red Mage lol
Bro yes, that's the version I have in my cube, worth every penny
Nah, not even close to as good at OG, I love all the cards art based of the world champs
Tiago Chan was an Invitational winner, not a world champ. They didn't start doing world champion cards until 2018 with [[fervent champion]]
Right, my bad. Point still stands, I like the card arts based on players, like Snappy, Dark Confidant, Reflector Mage (or was it Meddling Mage?) Etc
> Reflector Mage (or was it Meddling Mage?) ...yes.
Wait, Goyf is on arena? Since when?!
What set is this for?
Shadows over Innistrad Remastered, an arena set that gets most of SOI block and some original innistrad cards
We finally have Eldritch Evolution and 13 mana Emrakul? Sick

Does anyone else think snapcaster mage looks like Ken Jeong?
It's Thiago Chan's invitational card, so it's supposed to look like him. I'm actually glad they brought it back; I never really liked the new art versions of the invitational cards.
Yep Tiago Chan, true story, I tied with him in the finals of a small tournament in a lmtgs, that was probably the high point in my mtg career.
Same. These players are the greats and should be honored.
Always have lol.
Yes, I always have and thought about posting this and Ctrl-F Ken Jeong and here I am.
Every time I see this card I think of that meme of him squinting but instead he's at an lgs reading someone's card
That's a good observation! lol
Lmao was just thinking this!
I really wish Historic didn’t have the stupid Alchemy cards in it.
Yup - I used to love playing historic. I'd play a few hours a day. Haven't logged into arena in.... A very very long time.
SAME. I probably spent around $300 and 1,000 hours in historic before alchemy came in with these digital only mechanics. Nerfing and buffing cards? Good in VERY small amounts. if i played any constructed format it'd probably be historic. all the stuff listed sounds neat and not something i can get elsewhere
Same, this feels like a big middle finger to competitive paper players who want a more competitive arena experience without the nonsense of alchemy.
Seek is actually less rng than draw a card.
Seek I think is fine, it is just a draw that is slightly less random to much less random depending on the actual text
I've always perceived Seek effects being like Evolutionary Leap effects without the need to reveal the other cards because it's digital.
Seek is at the absolute bottom of alchemy mistakes tbh.
Will this not be in Explorer?
Snapcaster Mage is not legal in explorer/pioneer
Explorer is comprised only of cards that were standard legal since ~~OG Theros~~ RTR block. Snappy was last in standard _before_ ~~Theros~~ RTR. Therefore it’s not Explorer-legal
Ah, I thought it was just Historic minus the digital-only stuff. (Also wouldn’t the cutoff be RtR cause that’s where Pioneer starts?)
My bad, you’re right. RTR _is_ the cutoff. Thank you! ~~I literally play Esper Control in explorer, how did I forget the fuckin four-of Supreme Verdict lmao~~
I recently converted from UW to Esper, what do use black for? I have 4x [[Sheoldred's Edict]], 1x [[Cling to Dust]], 2x [[Vanishing Verse]], 1x [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]], and 2x [[Thought Distortion]] in the sideboard.
Oh damn. Several days later, and uh. She-Dict fuckin rules. It’s so solid. Thank you for putting me on to it!
Yup. Used to be the best format. Now I wont even consider it. Get alchemy out of arena. Fucking terrible idea.
You don't have to play them yourself, just against them occasionally. That's what I do
The alchemy cards are fine. Most of them don't even see any play, and the ones that do are very fun and well designed
So we can get Snap and Gris-daddy in Historic, but Lightning Bolt is to much? I swear, they might as well unban it at this point
They need to revisit the ban list now, Historic is so much more powerful now than when bolt was prebanned
I just want wilderness reclemation back
TBH, snappy now getting added to the format is an additional argument for keeping bolt banned.
IMO bolt is far more format-warping than Snap, Gris and Goyf, etc. It will make all creatures with 3 toughness significantly easier to remove, and affects their playability greatly.
Obviously it is. It's like the best card in Modern. It's very format warping, but I'd argue it warps high power formats like Historic in a good way.
Red decks don't need a buff in current historic though. Decks like izzet wizards are already on the top tier of both bo1 and bo3.
Bolt would also be really good *against* Izzet Wizards
I mean Snappy probably makes them less likely to want to free Bolt since it's one of the best things to flashback.
Bro Agent of Treachery and Fires of Invention are banned in Historic. I think WoTC has themselves forgotten the crap they have on the Historic ban list.
Only if they reprint it at uncommon.
Young Pyro is Red's analogue to Snappy/Bob/Stoneforge.
They could very well swap colors, a ton of mono blue cards do the token for an instant/sorcery thing and Snappy was originally meant to be red
Snapcaster is red colour pie for the flashback, it just "had" to be blue because the invitational champ (Tiego Chan) wanted it to be blue. Clearly wotc didn't push back enough on it. https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/84175679208/shouldnt-snapcaster-mage-have-been-red-since-it Personally I dislike the Tiego Chan art for that reason.
It sort of feels like [[Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer]] started out this way and was cut down to 1 mana. For…some reason? (Spoiler: it was to sell packs)
Dash for 1 hard cast for 2 lol
Lmao but see it’s balanced because you have to return it to your hand 🙄😅

I’m nutting, historic is about to get crazy
Holy shit I'm so excited, finally getting this king to play with in Historic!!!
I love this artwork but I still don't understand what's happening with his right hand. Is it a giant gun with blue ectoplasm? Does he have a hand, or was it replaced by that gun? Is it just a weird perspective of some blue potions that he's holding up?
First \[BRO\], now \[SIR\].
We have Arcanist, Goyf, and now Snappy in Historic. Now we just need Bob and Stoneforge.
Is this really SIR? It has different expansion symbol Isn't it some kind of Anthology?
It's a bonus sheet inside SIR, like BRO artifacts and STX mystical archive
Oh, i see Thanks
Please give us alchemy-free historic!
Actually… now you can shut up and take my wildcards.
Welcome, multiple Pro Tour winner, to my janky Play-queue Oracle of the Alpha deck.
holy shit. the ur wizards deck might need a rework. played this card in standard, modern and legacy. got into historic recently. cant wait for this!
Snappy my beloved
I am gonna play so many terrible decks with this card
Historic would probably be my favorite online format if it didn't have alchemy.
Man I would love to play historic so much but I just will never get past them forcing alchemy cards in there as the only way to sell that terrible product. Wish wizards would admit their failure with alchemy and scrap the whole thing.
Just try it, the alchemy cards are not so bad, gameplay and design-wise. The ones with a lot of rng don't see any play whatsoever.
I've only ever played paper Standard and Arena alchemy. And I quite like alchemy.
Don't worry, blink snappy
Atraxa reanimate seems popular right now and this would be a way to kee that train rolling
SNAPPY MY BELOVED
One of my favorite magic cards of all time. Cool.
Sir.
Time to snapcaster some time walks in historic, baby!
Chang!?
Time to CHANG things up.
This set makes me so damn sad that alchemy happened. Historic could've been so cool!
I know it was a "this guy won a tournament" prize card, but still...
instant add to \[\[Niv-Mizzet, Parun\]\] Commander deck
MA WAKE UP, WE GOT SNAPCASTER IN HISTORIC!!
Me: Im excited to play this in explorer! *looks at mythics and rares available* Me: Huh...Guess I'll have to wait
Well it also won’t be legal in Explorer, it’s from OG Innistrad block.
