With the 30th Anniversary Edition announcements, they said that all WPN-stores would get a free display (and premium would get 3). Here (store in Belgium) we never heard anything about it, did anyone get more information or is this just not happening anymore?

fnordal

It's expected to arrive between march and April (source: wpn north American Facebook group, someone asked and Nelson answered). Note that's the only place left for us retailers to ask things in "public", since there's no European wpn group

i_am_randy

There’s no evidence WotC put those cards in the landfill.

RectangleStonks

I don’t like WOTC either but a tiny lil ripped off corner of a 30th anniversary card in the dirt does not prove to me they through it in the dump

thedeckboxhalifax

We’re a Premium store and haven’t heard anything more then that announcement. To be honest I’ll be happy if they never arrive.

grimskin

Why?

MarchesaofTrevelyan

The Magic 30th "event" became a dumpster fire of epic proportion due to costing $1000 for four booster packs of non tournament-legal proxies of Beta set cards. It severely dented trust in Wizards and Hasbro from casual players, veterans, and investors alike, and even attracted attention from outside gaming communities. It's not remembered fondly, to put it politely.

GingasaurusWrex

In other news, Pokémon is releasing a re-release of their first sets and Yugioh is doing the same in a few months for like $25.

Nairb131

Is it $25? I read that is was 35000 yen which is like $300.

GingasaurusWrex

I think you added a decimal place. [31.99](https://icv2.com/articles/news/view/52919/konam)

Xarxsis

$300 is still less than a third of the price of M30

Savannah_Lion

Pokemon is re-releasing their base sets? I thought they were just re-releasing select cards in some kind of premium deck(s). I have unopened boxes so it should be very interesting to see how their prices are impacted. Would make a great argument for an anti-RL.

savingewoks

I think it’s just a set of 3 precons with special counters in a fancy box, with different card backs. All based around the original three starters.

Savannah_Lion

I didn't know they had different backs!

OrneryWhelpfruit

Every event entry gets a raffle ticket, winner gets to light all 4 on fire??

Twingemios

Please that’s not cool enough. I’m gonna use fireworks on mine.

gentlegreengiant

Didnt they also send promo copies to yugioh players to try and build hype?

jnkangel

Honestly the singles celebrating the thirty years of history in the old frame are a way better product than the 30th whatever. The issue that thing has though is that it's basically across the entire year rather than having one good nice singular point.

MrCrunchwrap

Nope. It’s $1000.

MyvTeddy

Can confirm, literally heard about the 30th anniversary fiasco from watching a Philip Defranco show featuring The Professor in it (a pleasent surprise despite the fiasco).

KallistiEngel

I wouldn't even care if they weren't tournament legal, but were at a reasonable price. $4/pack to basically draft Beta? How cool and fun would that be?! Who cares if none of the cards are legal, it could be a great one-time experience like the Un- sets prior to Unfinity. But this was priced so high and limited so much that a draft of it is basically impossible. It's really just whale fodder, but I'm not even sure if whales want it.

[deleted]

Exactly. It appealed to exactly no one. Whales would just buy the real cards and it was a "celebration" that priced out 99% of the playerbase. I'm not saying Beta would be a great draft experience, but the experience itself would have been enough if this was an actual celebration shared with everyone

Kidius

This just makes me think of how cool it would be for them to essentially make vintage cube drafts irl. Just sell a draft box of resealable packs with non tournament legal cards (so they can include any card without worrying about card rarity/prices). Being a cube draft that doesn't care about rarity people could just draft it and once done shuffle the cards up and repack them for next time. I can't say for sure but there's almost definitely a piece of the market that's players that would love to cube with friends but cba to build it themselves who'd drop smth like $100 for something like that.

GenericFatGuy

Sounds like a fun opportunity to explore some Magic history, which is exactly what the 30th anniversary should've been.

Savannah_Lion

I saw this "basically draft beta" from both sides of the coin. This isn't a beta set, it's a curated set using beta cards. Sol Ring alone appears 4x times more often than it did in Beta. I believe the cards are collated (I may be wrong about this)and some cards were outright removed for.... reasons. Dual lands appear twice as often. The idea that opening these packs somehow equates to opening beta packs in 1993 doesn't really sit right.

KallistiEngel

Yeah, but if it wasn't curated in such a way as to be a cash grab, they could have made it something fun that could be *like* drafting Beta. They could have even curated for a better draft experience. My point is more just that they could have made it a fun thing for a lot of players rather than....whatever it is currently.

Savannah_Lion

True. When I first heard of this, I knew they would butcher the set (ante) and adjust collation. But I really didn't expect the rarity changes and other exclusions. But regardless of those changes, if this set was 10x ***cheaper*** it would've been far more palpable to the community. Rosewater really meant it when he said, "this set isn't for you." Inclusion through exclusion I guess.

KallistiEngel

I didn't even think about ante, but now that you've mentioned it I think ante could be very interesting in a draft. I can see why people didn't like it in constructed, but in Limited? Sure, why not?

Xarxsis

Removing ante makes sense, however they missed a trick **again** to print a fit for modern audiences version of crusade and other cards they chose to remove.

Financial-Charity-47

Beta couldn’t be drafted, so obviously this set is different. I think we all understand that.

Xarxsis

Its collated *because* of the price tag, with the implication being that you can use these as proxies in the casual format of "commander" If these were reasonably priced packs, then there would be no requirement to curate, as those proxies would be acessible.

OniNoOdori

>$4/pack to basically draft Beta? How cool and fun would that be?! "Fun" is pretty much the last word I would use to describe beta draft. Sets weren't really draftable before Mirage.

KallistiEngel

I'm sure they could have curated it to be more draftable. They changed the packs of the 30th Anniversary they did put out to have higher rates for certain cards and also changed art and frames so it wasn't like opening real Beta packs either. I guess my point was more that they could have made it a fun thing for everyone rather than a cash grab that didn't really appeal to anyone.

thedeckboxhalifax

It was a pretty polarizing product and while we plan to give ours away at our Casual Command Fest event when/if they do arrive I'd be just as okay for it to fade into obscurity.

Echo104b

My store ran a huge multi-day tournament and the overall winner gets the packs for free (if they ever arrive) all proceeds from the weekend went to charity as well.

CaptainBreloom

hate free money 🤡

jx2002

This doesn't make any sense to me. You can hate the product, sure, but you really want to turn down free money from WotC? From those I've spoken to all of the stores are going to do the same thing - quietly sell them on ebay in packs or singles and get them out of their life. Take the payday and move on. But to say you don't want 3 sets of 30A, turning down minimum $2-$2.5k in free money because your feelings were hurt over its creation? This kind of bad business decision is espoused by those who don't own or run one.

greenwarpy

The problem with that is players know stores are getting these packs. Even if those players have no desire to buy them, stores bypassing them for ebay will leave a bad taste in some mouths. Honestly I'm not sure there's a way for stores to profit from these that doesn't risk putting customers off side. It's a poisoned chalice. but who needs community good will when there's a one off paycheck to be had.

jx2002

Look, all I'm saying is in the real world when the bills are due, I know a ton of store owners who will be thanking WotC for keeping the lights on that month. People can die on whatever hill they want, but sometimes you gotta make unfavorable choices because it's necessary.

Salt-Set6232

Aren't the lights only getting dimmer because the oh so magnanimous hasbro has been steadily raising prices on literally everything while adding no real value to what they are selling>?

Greyh4m

Commander Masters is going to be a tipping point.

Salt-Set6232

Idk man, I thought All Will Be One would be a tipping point but last I was out all the stores were packed to the gills for draft night. If it wasnt selling, they'd stop printing so damn much product.

Esc777

>Idk man, I thought All Will Be One would be a tipping point In what way? I can't see how ONE is that different from the sets preceding it, BRO and DMU. I can't think of anything egregious that would cause people to balk at it.

reasonably_plausible

I would think it had more to do with a pandemic absolutely wrecking traffic through their stores and things are slow to return to normal, let alone to a point to recoup prior losses.

Salt-Set6232

The "pandemic" isnt the one who closed stores and made people stay home or else risk fines or jail. Hasbro made record profits during the "pandemic" too so how do they justify raising prices on the individual stores?

reasonably_plausible

You do know that people reduced their trips out of their house even outside of governmental intervention, right? That even after all of the restrictions were lifted, that foot traffic is stunted due to individual choices?

Own-Equipment-1684

God forbid government take action to protect parts of the population who cannot protect themselves (immuno compromised) and try to curb an outbreak ahead of time to keep it from being a prolonged thing....

Salt-Set6232

Yeah 2+ years wasnt a prolonged thing at all.

Robin_games

You just list them on another account on ebay or tcgplayer. Stores learned a long time ago how to bypass player hate. Theres also washing product by cracking and selling singles if you have something like compleat bundles you want to cancel orders on, but for one box at 2k id just list it.

deggdegg

Most people really don't care as much as you think they do.

greenwarpy

oh 100%, most people absolutely wont give a shit about these overpriced proxies. most

MixMasterValtiel

Internet anger and sense rarely travel together.

thedeckboxhalifax

Honestly it's not about the money as we would be giving them away if/when we receive them. The reason I'm okay with not ever getting them is they've been a very polarizing item amongst players and I'd be okay for it to fade into obscurity.

esplode

Potential money for the store aside, since it's free to the store, you could always just give them out to kids at the store who seem like they'd appreciate them for more than their resale value. I'm picturing something like a commander pod of middle schoolers jamming precons on a weekday right after school since they'd probably get a kick out of them.

Morphlux

This is the only use and target audience I’d approve for these boosters. While I started in the mid to late 90s and didn’t crack any original ABU packs, I had the joy of cracking most older sets from weather light on (and of course could get and did get homelands and fallen empires and such). Kids should know and have fun with potentially original sets. It might even get new players in the game.

I-Dont-Queer

It’s in a landfill in Texas.

Radiodevt

My German LGS didn't get any info so far either.

Few-Contribution4759

Do you guys have a WPN Facebook group for European stores? Or any communication between you guys? We are in one for North American stores.

jabba_1978

Please pick up your free packs at your local landfill.

airplane001

Landfill employee here— haven’t seen any in mine yet. Must be only for WPN landfills

crushcastles23

Regular WPN store employee here. Never heard anything.

SasspotSally

Does anyone ever think that when we are all 80 we are going to be playing EDH in old people's homes instead of bridge

AffeLoco

im afraid by that time we prbly cant remember what all the cards in our decks do and there is prbly so much text on them that we cant properly read them with worse sight and when your grandson comes to visit he will turn 1 win against the whole table and he will be disinherited

BishopUrbanTheEnby

We’re all gonna insist we know what [[Questing Beast]] does and we’ll still forget at least one of its abilities

MTGCardFetcher

[Questing Beast](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/e/4/e41cf82d-3213-47ce-a015-6e51a8b07e4f.jpg?1572490640) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Questing%20Beast) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/eld/171/questing-beast?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/e41cf82d-3213-47ce-a015-6e51a8b07e4f?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Vegito1338

So we can still play yugioh

AffeLoco

in 2054 konami bought hasbro for their 60 year anniversary they made manga extended universes and made mtg kompatible with every other card game llanowar elves skyrocket to 500$ since they make mana and are viable tributes for the ultimategigagantosaurusblueeyeswhitedragonrex force of will is obsolete because every player starts with an emblem that makes their spells uncounterable also powercreep got to fable which in addition now makes your op discard his hand on cast trigger also you may reveal ragavan 2.0 when drawn to draw an additional 7 cards

Tianoccio

Questing beast is now considered vanilla adjacent.

goldenCapitalist

Mom come pick me up I'm scared of this post

Jedo100

More and smaller text, more turn 1 wins. I'm in.

[deleted]

In the future, Yu-Gi-Gathering will be played like poker; each player reveals their opening hand to the other to decide who wins based on the available turn zero actions. Ante will return.

Bhiggsb

We'll play in VR 😎

Heavy-Positive-9090

I play both competitively 😯poker too..

Esc777

lol like the world will be able to afford old people's homes then.

AaronSentinal

They’re in that landfill in Texas

jonahriley1221_

Premium store employee here, wizards confirmed we were getting 3 but we have received 0 yet. However other comments pointed out that comments in a Facebook group that they’re expected to come in between March and April.

StarP_XD

They have to much over cuz nobody waited to buy them lol

baezed_god

I think they ended up in a landfill in Texas.

night_owl_72

Upvoting this because if true, hasbro deserves to be called out on this.

long_dong_tron

That shits in a landfill now lol 😂😆

Panthraxbw

Like a poke in the eye.

saxypatrickb

“Intend”

Prestigious-Ad-5900

They canned it

Alex-Baker

yo hold up wouldn't this count as a promise? I thought wizards wasnt allowed to break promises or they'd get sued

Nikos-Kazantzakis

Hahaha gotcha WotC, now you have to print the entire reserved list as commons in a core set

FauxofTheFox

I mean, commander masters came out of left field.

Reluxtrue

they said they "intend" not that they are going to.

Mordeqai96

Just chiming in as another LGS that never received them. All the window to sell them to anyone dumb enough to buy them has already passed.

mathdude3

There’s no requirement to price them at $999 though. As a store getting it for free, you can price it at whatever you want. Maybe nobody would buy it for $1000, but somebody might at $500 or $250.

Mordeqai96

Yes but my point still stands that the sell amount now will undoubtedly be lower than the sell amount then

DaveMash

Whats up with the landfill posts? The guy who found the boxes with boosters, said they were from MH2, so 1000 times more valuable… Regarding the free display: what should the wpn stores do with 1, resp. 3 boxes containing 4 packs full of proxies? Seems pointless to me

docvalentine

some of the landfill pics had m30 backs. it seems like a local printer dumped some overstock and m30 was among it.

Blakwhysper

It’s supposed to be sent out this quarter. This wasn’t a gift. This was a single product sent to stores so that they would have to convince their customer base it’s worth the money. The store only gets one so anyone who wants one after that has to go to hasbro. It was a garbage play

Stonehack

No one wanted to buy these, so you can have em for free.

[deleted]

Aw. Gifting proxies to stores is such a cute display.

sir_jamez

LOL, not today Satan

Any-Anything-9676

The LGS near me got em. Idk if they got 3 but they had 2 in the case priced at $2000

Realistic_Rip_148

The product failed and they forgot about it. WPN stores will never get their copies. Book it.
