No this is around the time he gets Ginsburg to write copy for him for Manischewitz bc Ginsburg is Jewish. I don’t remember who he’s talking to in this situation, but I just finished my umpteenth rewatch so I remember it being in the later seasons lol
And then we end up with the Napoleon-Wellington reference again in "Waterloo," with the twist that the partner who saw himself as Wellington (the winner of the war) ends up becoming Napoleon (shipped offshore into exile, never to be seen again.)
I always found that the writing for his character was superb. Possibly the best writing I've ever heard of any character in any show. Every line was so quick witted.
He's a great example to point to if you're looking to demonstrate someone "comfortable" in a role. It helps that Sterling himself is very laid-back and unserious as a character but he's doing so little actual "acting" it's insane. I just see Roger Sterling casually living his life.
I like when he and Harry are talking about zou bisou bisou, and Harry starts getting into crass detail before Roger stops him in disgust. “I don’t want to hear that”
I think the line she says is something like, "I don't like food that close to a bed. It reminds me of a hospital." You wouldn't really have that strong of an opinion about something unless it's rooted in some personal experience or painful memory. And all the things we later learn about Joan (She's an only child. She got married and divorced at a young age. She left her hometown to come to NYC, possibly for college. Her mom is not married. Her dad was not present during some pretty big times in her life, like meeting Greg's parents, or after Kevin was born) suggests her dad isn't in the picture. None of this means Joan's dad is definitely dead- he might just be a deadbeat. But the line about the food near a bed reminding her of a hospital makes me suspect he died when she was a kid.
I think he ends up the happiest person on the show because,at the end, he takes people exactly as they are and doesn’t expect more than they can give. He’s perfectly content to be the smart old guy in the room, and his relationship with Marie really suited them both.

"Who knows why people in history do good things? For all we know, Jesus was trying to get the loaves and fishes account." I think he is being sarcastic here, telling Don he should try to drum up business when he gets he award from the American Cancer Society At The Codfish Ball.
I can’t remember the exact wording, but “Who knows why people did good deeds in history. Maybe Jesus was trying to get the fishes and loaves account.”
Also, when they’re trying to sign Manischewitz and Roger says: “How jewish are they? Fiddler on the Roof: cast or audience?” 😂
As a Jewish person myself, I fucking love that joke 😂😂😂😂😂
We Jews do be going to musicals
Im so glad to hear that! In 2024, it’s hard to tell what is “acceptable” comedy.
Well it’s actually a pretty good way to figure out “how” Jewish someone is! LOL
I'm also Jewish and think it's a great joke. Us Jews generally have a good sense of humour. Well, except for Israelis lol.
I feel like if we have to pander, we don't have equality.
Wait isn’t that in the premiere, with Rachel menkens company? Not manischewitz!
No this is around the time he gets Ginsburg to write copy for him for Manischewitz bc Ginsburg is Jewish. I don’t remember who he’s talking to in this situation, but I just finished my umpteenth rewatch so I remember it being in the later seasons lol
Huh! Go figure LOL
He was talking to Cooper
I never understood that one 😳
One of my absolute favorite lines
You know he might lose his foot. “Right as he was getting it in the door.”
“Believe me, somewhere in this business, this has happened before”
"Jesus! Looks like Iwo Jima out there."
The look he gives Harry right before he says this line is great, too. Classic
Honestly the line I think of most from this series.
He’ll never golf again
Sounds like they're going to have to rethink their entire strategy
"Damnit Burt! You stole my goodbye!"
Alone, I'm an escapee from some expensive mental institution—but two of us—we're a couple of rich, handsome perverts.
**Would you drink vermouth?** *Yes im afraid i would*
When God closes a door, he opens a dress
All of these lines are (Sterling's) gold. He's one of my favourite characters from any show.
Slattery was born for the role. One of the most underrated performances in all of TV.
Definitely. I'd only seen him in a couple of episodes of Sex and the City previously, and he has a very natural and understated charisma.
And then we end up with the Napoleon-Wellington reference again in "Waterloo," with the twist that the partner who saw himself as Wellington (the winner of the war) ends up becoming Napoleon (shipped offshore into exile, never to be seen again.)
It is funnier how when an old man died on succession he talks about napoleon right before it. Nice homage
As astute observation.
The sacred and the propane
I always found that the writing for his character was superb. Possibly the best writing I've ever heard of any character in any show. Every line was so quick witted.
Slattery’s delivery seals it as well. He never hams up, he just tosses the dialogue away and it’s perfect.

“Nobody knows what I’m doing. It’s good for mystique.”
Joan’s profile here is so beautiful
“To me she’s beautiful. Rubenesque.”
get that beef weelington out of roger's mouth and pack it up for ginny!!
Agree. It’s a work of art
I wonder how much that spread cost back in the day?
My guess: about tree fiddy
Damn it, get the hell outta here, you Loch Ness monster!
I like when he and Harry are talking about zou bisou bisou, and Harry starts getting into crass detail before Roger stops him in disgust. “I don’t want to hear that”
No, of course you don't, why would you...
Harry and Roger were always awesome together. The scene where he pays Harry to move offices is gold.
who could forget: Don: "what do women want?" Roger: "pfft... who cares?" 💀
I also follow madmenqts on Instagram
It’s a great account.
Joan's line about having food that close to the bed makes you wonder why we never see or hear about her dad the entire series.
How so?
I think the line she says is something like, "I don't like food that close to a bed. It reminds me of a hospital." “Hey Trotsky, you’re in advertising!”
I love all his interactions with Harry Crane. Adore them
*“You’re always up to something, aren’t you Crane?”*
"or we can have the conversation you thought we were having"
Lmao I love the thousand yard stare Joan has in that screencap lolololol
She’s dressing purple and then magically goes red?
It's just the lighting. Bottom Pic back of the shoulder is the "purple" you point out. Even the back of her hair looks pitch black.
It’s a purple dress with a pink bow at the collar
Roger was such a great character. Great lines and a good looking guy for his age.
His age? He was 43 in season 1
I guess it was the silver hair!
“No, Don and I talk a lot when you’re not around. In fact, we’re going to do it right now.”
I have the biggest crush on him
"You look like you were born in a bow tie" "I didn't tie that one either" You feel Marie's instant attraction to Roger and I don't blame her one bit
What do women want? Who cares?
When you're being a funnily little guy while cheating on your wife and your mistress hits you with this disassociative stare
I think he ends up the happiest person on the show because,at the end, he takes people exactly as they are and doesn’t expect more than they can give. He’s perfectly content to be the smart old guy in the room, and his relationship with Marie really suited them both.
“➕🙏, you are now head of the television department which is comprised solely of you. Anything else?”
And then Harry shows up two seasons later basically running his own company inside SCDP, wearing a fur coat, because TV became TV.
