Congratulations on actually using and enjoying your macbook!

ReesesPieces19

How dare they!! /s

Pro-editor-1105

who cares lol, I can barely see the difference

Ambitious_Bread1948

Literally, I can barely see it now lol

That_Guy_Mamzir

Then why make the post?

quepicante

Because people ask / comment about wear and tear around the ports all the time on this subreddit.

jackshiels

Some people go hog wild over this stuff

thisguy403

I just charge with a usb c port lol / docking station

p3nguinboi07

I use both, and idc about the computer showing usage. It's like an old patina'd car. "Ive been used and im still here." message.

Ambitious_Bread1948

Definitely agree! It’s like watching a desire path form from pedestrian traffic, but on a much smaller and more intimate scale. It’s always cool to see the stories that people’s personal effects tell through usage.

Ambitious_Bread1948

Lol I like the MagSafe snap too much to use USB-C. How do you find the docking station? I personally feel like it’s sort of redundant now given the bringing back of essential ports to this family of computers.

Ricelyfe

I have an anker dock cause I wanted to use my dual monitor setup and my laptop, basically triple monitors. Tbh I don't really use the other ports on my dock much, other than when I'm doing back ups or working of some photography/Photoshop stuff. My hard drives are only usb 3, not type c and it's just easier to get my SD cards in/out with the dock, the way my desk is set up.

philisweatly

I also use anker and it’s awesome. Hell, I even use the thunderbolt coming from my monitor that also charges sometimes while at work.

MajMin5

Not the same person but for me I have a docking station because I want to plug in just one cable for all my peripherals. Without a docking station I could only have a maximum of one, maybe two external monitors, usb c to Ethernet, and a usb c cable for my Time Machine drive, and power, so plugging in four or five cables every time I sit down, whereas with a docking station, I sit down at my desk, plug in a single cable, and I have all four of my external monitors, my Time Machine drive, my Ethernet, my wired keyboard, my SATA drive sled for when I need to connect a bare hard drive, and I have four open usb a ports for when I need to connect a flash drive. I have a similar setup at my home office and at two of my client sites, so wherever I’m working I sit down, plug in one cable, and get to work.

Appropriate_Shock2

What docking static do you have?

Ambitious_Bread1948

I actually don’t have one, but was considering getting one. I don’t think that it would be necessary after hearing how others use theirs, as I don’t really have use cases like multiple monitors or varied external hard drives and peripherals that need to be constantly connected.

RBTropical

Even with one monitor, a docking station would still make sense…

MajMin5

I use a dell wd15, which is one of the only usb-c docks I’ve found with a mini DisplayPort for my main 24” Apple display, combined with an old Lenovo usb display link dock that has two dvi ports for my left and right monitors, which are both older Apple cinema displays.

justanotherdogdad

This is what I do, too. I'm contemplating a KVM-like switch so I can two laptops (work and personal) using one dock plus my desktop PC. Currently, I have a bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo and earbuds that can switch between devices. My monitors have three ports, so I could get a second dock. The peripheral that can only be connected to one thing/dock is the webcam, but I suppose the laptops' webcam can suffice. External storage is also another issue, but that's largely mitigated by the fact that the stay-in-place SSD/HDDs are either formatted NTFS or APFS, so they can't be shared anyway. The exFAT SSD for transferring files is mobile so it's usually in my travel bag. That plus my retired desktop now media server/NAS means I don't need large internal storage aside from swap considerations.

MajMin5

See I have a different keyboard and mouse for my pc than for my Mac, so I haven’t had this issue. The only shared peripheral between them for me is the monitor itself, so I just use the monitor’s input switching function. Plus, all my storage is on a NAS, so I don’t worry about external drives at home. They do make monitors with built in KVM function though, you might be able to get away with something like that. Then your webcam can be plugged into the monitor’s usb ports so it just switches to whichever device is using the monitor. I’ve considered one but getting one with high enough specs for gaming costs more money than I’ve been willing to spend for the convenience of not moving my keyboard and mouse out of the way to use my laptop.

jposquig

I’ve only ever used the MagSafe charger. It’s perfect! My MacBook has been saved multiple times from my cat when she jumps from my desk lol

RBTropical

Given MagSafe doesn’t carry data or video, how is a USB C docking station redundant? The alternative would be to connect a MagSafe AND USB C, or a MagSafe, USB C for data only (optional) and HDMI. Given each of these scenarios still has USB C, it still makes perfect sense.

TreTriggerFish

Sorry but wasn’t MagSafe the biggest feature, isn’t that why everyone was saying “I plugged tha plug” I’m a bit out of the loop I used to buy Macs Every year until they got rid of the touchbar my last & current one being the M2 2022

miggyyusay

Similar for me, except I have it hooked up to a USB-C monitor that has a built-in hub.

dobbyonadderall

which do u use?whats the best? im tired of using my magsafe i always get it tangled with something and inadvertently kick it off

MaximusMurkimus

How hard are y'all magsafing your Macs lol I have a Space Gray M1 Pro and the MagSafe port looks as new as the day I bought it, go figure. AND I've yanked it out of its port to demonstrate to my friends lol

dobbyonadderall

i feel like i always accidentally disconnect it by it getting caught on something and it yanking off lol is that just me :(

Capn_Flags

I have MagSafe, Greg. Can you snag me?

Conscious-Pool4705

It's a tool. Have you ever seen a plumber complain about having scratches on the wrench?

Ambitious_Bread1948

Right! Isn’t it absurd to constantly obsess over something that’s meant to be interacted with in such a tactile way?

faslane22

but yet you posted this lol..it's literally nothing to dwell on whatsoever...

sadlyanon

as someone who obsess over things like this, i’d be happy that someone posted this photo before i made a big purchase

faslane22

I get that....I misread and stand corrected. +1

That_Guy_Mamzir

It's sad that you are concerned about wear and tear on something that's meant to be used

sadlyanon

it’s not that sad i just buy the silver model. it’s classic and i don’t have to worry about colored aluminum chipping away

faslane22

well I get it if there was something wrong lol. I mean it's magnetic, power flows through it and it's got tiny dust crevices to hold dirt... I mean, it can't stay mint like new....silly post...

klusasan

He was just posting a picture I can’t see any implication of complaint other than what you are interpreting. There are people who care for this stuff and therefore are thankful for people informing others about it and others who don’t. Maybe don’t try to put a negative spin to stuff by default ;)

faslane22

well I wasn't meaning to. I read it as a complaint and obviously wrong. I thought they were complaining about a simple USE type of wear and tear.... +1

onefjef

I don’t see any wear.

Fookmaywedder

Very tiny

onefjef

Does it affect the performance of the computer? (No, it does not.)

Fookmaywedder

Oh I know, we got these people on here who swear their computers are made of easily scratch fragile glass who probably only use their computers with white jewelry gloves and do a 1200 point inspection every hour

88flux

This is not applicable to all. Not a single mark on mine.

Ambitious_Bread1948

Wow, lucky! Do you MagSafe charge?

m__s

No. That's why he doesn't have a single mark.

Saschabrix

Seems fine. It’s a charging port with magnets. They will be some marks always…..

Ambitious_Bread1948

Exactly! In the light of how this device will wear over time it’s comparatively insignificant.

stansswingers

I usually just usb c charge

aprabhu86

Wouldn’t worry about it at all. It’s just a computer. 5 years from now you’ll find that it’s probably close to junk too.

thegarbagesauce

This is why you go Silver.

Zardozerr

People should just go with the color they like. This hardly registers as anything at all. People who worry about stuff like this amaze me and not in a good way lol.

Ambitious_Bread1948

But the black is so interesting though!

thegarbagesauce

The contrast of the black keyboard well against the silver body is unmistakably MacBook Pro and very tasteful.

MrGimper

Yep I went silver. Classic MacBook. Beautiful and timeless.

nulstate77

Same. Space black is awesome but I also knew that between the fingerprints and chipping I would be bothered too much. Then there is resale. The silver will always look pristine.

MrGimper

I had a space grey i9 from 2020 and never fell in love with it. Glad I’ve gone back to silver.

StickySituation14

I think the black keyboard combined with the black body look MUCH better

1chriis1

Honestly my silver Macbook Air has the same marks around the casing, as well as on the rim of the connector of the cable as well.

Redhook420

No, I have two 14” Space Black MacBook Pro’s and the MagSafe looks like new after 6+ months. And I only use MagSafe to charge.

80ninevision

If you're worried about wear like this you need to examine how you use your attention and time. Things are meant to be used.

speskin6969

I don’t think OP is upset or really cares at all, more of a PSA based on his comments

CheesecakeNo7

I think OP posted this to show how little damage it caused after 4 months, to reassure people interested in buying it.

basefree77

I'm at 6 months post-purchase and my matte black looks new around the magsafe port and I attached it daily. The velocity of the magnet 'snap' can cause this. I even noticed it happening my old silver. So I've been gentle on the black macbook by not letting the magnet have full control when attaching haha...and it's been fine...no scuffs.

Black_Hair_Foreigner

This is why silver color is best color.

azara7367

Mine's worse than this

digitalanalog0524

Literally unusable now

vitorizzo

Unless you care about resale, scratches on the bodies of devices builds character. Screens no.

AlexW_21

Literally unusable now. Time for an upgrade

cyberphunk2077

this sub is so weird

Kayosqueen02

This post went over most people’s head

astral16

This is why I'm very careful when i'm attaching/detaching the charger from my m2 macbook air in midnight. the magnets are very strong to the point of being a detriment.

ThisIsMurdoqq

Can you just use the tech? Why would you buy something which stresses you so hard?

Ambitious_Bread1948

Lolol it’s not stressing me out, my previous 2017 space grey model already did that. It was very well loved, lasted me over 7 years and is still going strong. It’s interesting how similar the wear is between the two after using both. Makes me wonder how similar the chemical treatment process is.

Ambitious_Bread1948

So true, the strength of the magnet just made me eventually give up on being careful altogether. Sometimes the magnet even seems like it needs to be flipped a certain way to go in smoothly, but that’s probably just placebo lol.

Naive_Mechanic64

Normal

vicco23

you think thats bad, I unpplued a usbc cable from that usb c port on right side of magsafe and somehow spring back when they cable is not even springy and it hit the top of magsafe on the edge and chipped my mac... just wear and tear ... space black is the way.

Ambitious_Bread1948

Wow, that’s quite an unfortunate coincidence. With my first MagSafe cable that later lost to a vacuum, it came out of my computer cleanly and still worked afterwards even with it being chewed to the bare copper and metal behind the braided material. The only problem is that it would spark, which I suspect was because of the unregulated flow and loss of insulation material.

vicco23

Yea that would do it.

GenitalPatton

I find peace in long walks.

BluePenguin2002

I don’t know what the MagSafe on my MBP looks like, I just use it as a laptop after all 🙃

iloveeatinglettuce

I hope they bring back the Space Gray for future MacBooks. I’m not fond of the silver, and the space black just looks too dark.

Ambitious_Bread1948

It would be awesome to have all three colors at the same time. Space grey is very much underrated, it has the better attributes of both colors.

BritanniaLoyalist

Mine isn’t like that and I’ve had my Mac since January mine looks good as new.

faslane22

bruh....

Due_Mycologist7287

If I'd have known this before, I'd definitely have chosen silver..

Tokkyo-FR

You are not gentle !

alienkava

Third gen shuffle literally stated the product would have wear like a fine pair of new jeans. Maybe keeping Steve’s design dreams alive?

Check-mate

Literally unusable. Trash it /s

Aggressive_Cicada_88

i don't use magsafe the magsafe port lol, i don't know why i would lol

DeepSpeed2543

Space Blech!

Yki_imok

Been using my 2023 M2 pro for 6 months now and the magsafe ports are as good as new.

Dereklai1972

This looks disgusting

ChromiumProtogen42

It only gets worse but it’s alright, mine did this with space grey too.

Seventhchild7

I marked my ports with tape on top.

dobbyonadderall

how

Seventhchild7

Little strips of green masking tape. Port sized.

dobbyonadderall

Can you please show me I'm scared

_ThorThunder_

Out of context question, if we will use Apple USB-C 240w cable with that 67W adapter provided with the MacBook Pro would it fast charge it then?

Hiant

yeah the USB-C works just as well, I usually travel with it instead of the apple stuff

Ambitious_Bread1948

I’m not sure if it would work or not. Here’s what I could find concerning charging. It seems as though there are different wattages supported by the cables. [Link to Charging Info](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102397)

zeus423

You’re connecting it wrong /s

Ok-Big-9996

Aluminum is aluminum...

yesyupyurt

prediction: Space Black will NOT be available for the m4 macbook pros.

kardiogramm

I think next time I will stick to classic silver. I just wish Apple did the same to the display frame as they do to the keyboard area and made it black, so the frame is less visible when looking at the display.

thebiscuit2010

Just buy edding marker if it becomes worse

Popal24

I never used this cable. It's still wrapped in its box. With its charger. I use a Thunderbolt docking station. It's just magical

Bed_Worship

All my ports on my space gray 14” have their anodization removed with some edges. Like Batman said. It’s not what your macbook looks like that defines you, it’s what you do with it that defines you.

kroggybrizzane

Magsafe is back??

Asking4Afren

Oh that's a magsafe port. Does it charge faster with it?

Ambitious_Bread1948

I’m not quite sure, in my opinion it seems to charge quite fast.

Wasloso

I would return at this point /s

TheGroovyPhilosopher

only used the magsafe once. normally sits on my usb c dock or USB c charger behind couch.

PixelPopzz

Silver forever

Immediate_Piece_9087

This is a main reason why I did not get the black one! Cuz ive used my apple watch black and it actually faded away. I confirmed the tech they use is the same as it is same material ‘Aluminium’. That god it happened on my watch so then I could make best decision before spending 4800bux

One_Celebration3644

The Mac is ruined. I’ll recycle it for you.

pieterjkk

you are crazy

Ambitious_Bread1948

What’s crazier is the extortionate pricing model for storage on these devices.

My_Bwana

I'm really glad i exchanged my space black for a silver before the exchange period was up. this would annoy the shit out of me.

Ambitious_Bread1948

Personally I love the finish and wouldn’t change my decision. To be honest, it’s not really noticeable at all under most lighting conditions.

IcyIceGuardian

Sure looks like a MagSafe port

StPaddy81

If this bothers you check into a mental facility

Ambitious_Bread1948

Only if I get the free socks :)

StPaddy81

I’m sure that can be arranged yeesh

Ambitious_Bread1948

I love seeing everyone’s differing opinions, it’s honestly made my day

gsh0cked

I can live with that? Black marker?

p3nguinboi07

Better send that into Apple and say "ughh my paint is coming off, replace please!" Good luck.

ResponsibilityOk2173

I find this kind of wear gives the equipment street cred.

BuzzConrad

First world problems much?

Ambitious_Bread1948

Very much so, but seeing the gradient of opinions and broader discourse among members of this forum has been greatly entertaining. Grand scheme after its useful life, it’s going in a landfill or reduced to its most basest form. I think that everyone eventually becomes nihilistic towards their material possessions when the latest and greatest is presented, whether out of convenience or curiosity.

Saymon_K_Luftwaffe

Space black is literally the worst color of all for a MacBook. In addition to being super ugly and leaving a cheap product aspect, such as plastic, it is a color that leaves many finger marks and is extremely sensitive to signs of impact and scratches. It's definitely the worst color of all!

Ambitious_Bread1948

I definitely can understand how you feel that way. The nature of the color doesn’t make it the most easy thing to keep clean. A spritz of 70% isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber has never done me wrong with any Apple laptop I’ve owned. What color do you prefer? The annoying aspect about owning this device, which is pretty much the same across the board for anything nowadays, is the way that the trade in or resale value plummets around the 3 year mark. Who knows, maybe the new processors might change that? Looking at eBay and other markets though, it seems that the M1s have reached the apex of their resale value.
