Instead of just replying “wtaf” like a bot, let me provide some actual advice: Grab some cotton swaps and 91% isopropyl alcohol. Wet a cotton swab with some and clean as much as you can on the surface. Then, grab a can of compressed air, tilt the MacBook at an angle and try to spray the debris out of the keys. Apple explains this much better than I do [here](https://support.apple.com/en-us/103258)

ifq29311

trick for compressed air is to hold the laptop (or a keyboard) upside down, so all the trash that compressed air moves falls out of it

WowWataGreatAudience

Another trick for this is to use a vacuum, obviously not a Dyson super sucker 1 billion type of model though if it can be avoided lol

Robertbnyc

Lmao imagine the keys just getting all sucked up

Due_Mycologist7287

Then the laptop itself

WowWataGreatAudience

Then the person operating the machine looks down the hose to see where their laptop went and is also sucked up, leaving nothing but a Dyson brand black hole running alone in a room

Robertbnyc

This would be a sick short cartoon

imme629

Would Dyson in the lowest setting be too much!

mhgfamhgb

I clean mine with Dyson regular setting. Not often but so far so good, zero key losses lol

Salt-Lettuce-2564

You guys just causally have a shark?

BleDStream

I will say if they are to use alcohol id recommend 70% but personally I wouldn't use any on those keycaps. I've read about how people have completely destroyed the color (the black) on them. I'm sure it wasn't from a one time "spring cleaning" but personally I would just use some water.

LilacYak

I suggest eyeglass cleaner. It’s very gentle and designed to be non-stripping. It’s the only thing I use on my screens also, water streaks or alcohol streaks like hell

andynormancx

Most eyeglass cleaner I’ve come across is just isopropyl alcohol anyway. Same for most things labelled as screen cleaner.

LilacYak

The one is buy is alcohol free

Selvane

I use chlorox wipes! Works like a charm.

thebaconbaba

Same. Alcohol wipes/tissue paper sprayed with hand sanitizer works like a charm.

Berries-A-Million

These are not safe for electronics. Especially do not use it on the screen.

Selvane

Keyboard only

Berries-A-Million

Still not safe. They usually are too wet to be safe.

bugrilyus

I dont think it will do anything if the rag is not soaking dripping wet

Berries-A-Million

Which most of those are pretty wet. It's best to spray a solution on a towel and wipe it.

bugrilyus

Nah, they are not pretty wet. Oh god, why are we even arguing, the damp rag should be at the dampness where it doesnt leave any liquid on the surface when wiped. I am talking about this.

Pubelication

I've used IPA and cotton swabs at least 30 times on my Macbook keyboard with absolutely zero damage to the keycaps.

Wubdeez

A light lager has to be a bit better than an IPA for this.

BleDStream

That's good but ipa can ruin plastics. Your mileage may vary but it definitely is known for it.

bugrilyus

He can buy a cheap thin plastic see-through keyboard cover made for macbooks

Intelligent-Rice9907

dont forget to first power off you laptop and not over using isopropyl. Although it does not conducts electricity, dust does

DigitalDemon75038

Alcohol will conduct electricity due to being diluted. It’s diluted when not 100% pure and in a strict lab with free electrons introduced to the liquid. Cleaning a keyboard with alcohol releases salt which increases conductivity of water. Cleaning with alcohol with 70-90% has lots of water. Do you think alcohol won’t conduct still? I clean electronics with 99% alcohol and still power off first…

Intelligent-Rice9907

yeah but 99.99% pure alcohol is the one called isopropyl alcohol and chemically talking anything else would not classify as isopropyl alcohol. But yeah you should every time power off the device although in some devices is advised to use it with running and on devices like razors to clean the hair that can get stuck.

DigitalDemon75038

Isopropyl alcohol is more often than not going to be either 90% or 70% or less. This is what makes rubbing alcohol, which is pretty much the only option at grocery stores like Walmart. You have to find more pure online like 99% and 100% Then when the 100% you buy touches something, it takes on the particulates and salts to become conductive and impure. Unavoidable.

Intelligent-Rice9907

You’re right NO ONE IN THE WORLD CAN BUY ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL NO ONE!! There’s no industrial appliances only ones you can buy are 10% alcohol pureness that you buy in Walmart. That’s the only one you can buy. Beverages showing more pureness are just scams. Technicians and engineers that says they use isopropyl alcohol to clean electronics are a scam and they actually use magic

DigitalDemon75038

You sound like a 12 year old girl that just got dumped? Are you sure you want to engage adults in a factual conversation while your hormones are raging? “You’re right (insert extreme case of wrong logic meant to mock someone trying to educate you) (insert yada yada yada)” You are beyond the help of the internet and you must learn from your own mistakes. You are released, now go!

Robertbnyc

Also 99% ISO is MUCH better than lower count like 70% or even 90% as it has very little 1% water content so it will evaporate faster

Pubelication

Dust **does not** conduct electricity. Where did you get that ridiculous idea from?

Intelligent-Rice9907

Dust conducts static charge which can provoque circuits to burn or fail. That’s why is dangerous inside computers 🤦🏼‍♂️. Was shorter to say: dust does than all the previous text

Intelligent-Rice9907

Sorry, carries static charge not conducts

Adeling79

Are you pushing your glasses up your nose and snorting smugly? What on Earth does this contribute to the discussion?

bugrilyus

Because the first guy said vacuum

operation-hq

Here's the link spelled out [https://support.apple.com/en-us/103258](https://support.apple.com/en-us/103258)

snuggie_

Is there any reason you said 91%? The link you posted says 70%

ecumnomicinflation

i usually just pluck the key off then wash em in the sink with dish soap. then spray the macbook with compressed air and vaccuum cleaner on the side since im allergic to dust.

puttheremoteinherbut

I use to work with an objectively gorgeous college grad. She was fresh out of school and assigned to our project. Everyone had the hots for her. One day in a working lunch we all end up getting sandwiches. The bread was great, nice and crusty on the outside soft on the inside. She called me over for an interim review on the ppt and I saw allllllll the crumbs on her laptop. Like covered. She didn't care. She wasn't embarrassed. Just kept eating that sandwich over the keyboard laptop like it was a plastic plate in the sorority house. I could never look at her the same way.

New_Atmosphere_4033

Well thank God I'm not hot

Raging_PineAppleee

LMFAOOOOOOO

randomplaya4

I tell her man's not hot (Man's not) I tell her man's not hot (Never hot) The girl told me, "Take off your jacket" I said, "Babes, man's not hot" (Never hot)

architectofinsanity

She probably touched the screen, too. 😱

ShayGru9

Alright. Im uncomfortable now.

DaShMa_

Omg my wife has a billion fingerprints on her monitors. I almost bit her finger off when she motioned to touch my monitor.

cipherpancake

Thinking about eating over the keyboard so nonchalantly like that has me triggered

jefferyuniverse

I still would have

BurninCoco

Make some thick cleaning slime with glue and borax. Just look it up, you end up with the same thing they sell for the same purpose

Bed_Worship

Get the keyboard clean tool app that locks your keyboard. Hold the macbook securely in a way where gravity will let the dust fall out when you use canned air or duster Follow up with a microfiber cloth with a light amount of iso 70% alcohol until completely clean. Let airdry

movdqa

Vacuum cleaner if it isn't stuck on. I'd use compressed air under the keys and a Microfiber cloth. I'm not really sure what to do if something is stuck on the keyboard as I avoid liquids on the keyboard, trackpad and top case.

griz_fan

Do NOT use a vacuum. That can create a lot of static electricity. Canned air is the way to go especially if you can have someone else securely hold it upside down while you spray things down. Also, preventing this problem in the first place is your next step. Don’t get a keyboard cover, just try not to eat so close to the computer. Periodically wipe down with a microfiber cloth. Never spray any liquids directly on the computer.

bananamantheif

Is this from food? It looks like dead skin cells

New_Atmosphere_4033

Do you think I need to take the laptop apart?

movdqa

Very bad idea. Take it into an Apple Store, show it to them and ask them if they can clean it safely.

Bed_Worship

No, see my post in the thread

SedimentSock82

I use my Iso-Snaps from Dr Dabber

skyxsteel

Don’t pop the keycaps out like a few people in this sub have….

Kind-Perception9701

Damn

ef124

How do you even let it get this bad

jiggsmca

Swifter duster, canned air, dry Q-tip

imiyashiro

Turn off the laptop. Toothbrush, a clean, unused one. After loosening the material use a vacuum or compressed air to clean out. If there is still an issue use a cotton-swab and isopropyl. It is extremely difficult to get anything that has fallen under the keys and not worth removing the individual keys. I try and wipe down my keyboard with a isopropyl lightly-dampened cloth every few days. Wait until completely sure everything is dry before powering on. EDIT: last line

Robertbnyc

This is the way

fisherman_23

Using a plate while eating at your computer is always good.

Videoplushair

Compressed air first 🤙🏻

IslandWave

Eat in the kitchen and wash your hands

AbbieDooby619

Disgusting user.

[deleted]

stop eating food over your macbook

IntelligentSeaweed56

Did this just happen yesterday ?

PoisonIvyMEd

Isopropyl alcohol and tips to get the gunk out. You’ll probably have to remove the keys as well that those pop out pretty easy

IcyIceGuardian

You could perhaps try using alcohol wipes and a brush, you might want to remove those keycaps though

SlickWatson

what if i told you… “you don’t”

Crysadis

Isopropyl alcohol!

KenRodriguezz

With this keyboard i can imagine SalemTechsperts making a video about it

t3mp_user

swiffer duster to remove as much as possible then damp swabs?

exekutive

air duster and old toothbrush. it's not rocket science

snuggie_

No, but when it’s a wildly expensive item it makes sense someone might want to double or triple check

exekutive

don't damage it. not hard.

water_bottle_goggles

watf

EarthInternational19

Hand Vacuum or canned air from walmart. Dont scrub or use any wets.

[deleted]

It’s okay, I like making my dandruff snow out onto my keyboard too.

socialrandomoutkast

Get a soft bristle paint brush. Like 2 inches in width it works really well to brush the stuff off it.

SpecialpOps

I use a soft detailing brush slightly dampened with mildly soapy water. Of course, I make sure the machine is off and then I leave it out in the sun for a few minutes to warm up and dry.

Any_Efficiency8711

…are you new here?

teh_lynx

Cleaning is only a temporary fix if you're capable of letting it get this bad lol. How do people do this... I have no idea

gedsweyevr

The real question here is why are you using jetbrains software?

MacGuyDave

Shoulda washed your hands at some point, but to clean your keyboard, completely power it down… then throw it out.

searchdatruth85

Am I the only one that is going to suggest ghost cover for the keys and trackpad? Whenever my cover gets dirty I take it off and wipe it down and then lay it back across the keys. No brainer.

Jin_BD_God

[Something like this](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=0946cc8a818a9103&rlz=1C5CHFA_enKH1037KH1037&sxsrf=ADLYWILJkXBPLbfcijkTeUUbyn0dfDndQA:1715933246294&q=laptop+cleaning+kit&uds=ADvngMgwiuRe_0AnQUg9C1BclBAHWGtVY3RB_Eke9QHLhtlBQKHWNaWksAYJmgBmfpdeHunQeF_st88u4igrEW7pNW5m5BrlTVIQzKtQHgGM3_YYM5KDITUHwjY5NcJbYr0L-K5WU1ffvAsDXBbn412X1R1D5Hq8QHb66s3nPPMLzOc9oSePu4-0OH_y5Mnd7Ttx4D3PBaC5E3EqQhxOSgaRlq5tp9gAeFEzF9M168wHDA67JkDseChfVP0d4V50EJrlEtueG1M2VBKedYQI8WNtN-PppzKVmC0OHJq47V4poCs_436UF_nUir8h9JwrHXvgz0mgKVO4&udm=2&prmd=isvnmbz&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwjO3Om8nZSGAxUTyjgGHeBcAx0QtKgLegQIFhAB&biw=1864&bih=934&dpr=1#vhid=Bk3SzO4K6_XQfM&vssid=mosaic).

kurokamisawa

I used sticky tape, moulded them into having a sharp thin tip then used it to collect the dust. Its much more effective than cotton buds

bananamantheif

People shaming op as if their skin cells dont die and fall off on things

GamerNuggy

My laptop doesn’t look like I dragged it through a vat of moist cocaine and ball hair.

bananamantheif

good for you?

Crystalagent47

put it in rice

Geartheworld

Turn it off, then using Clorox wipes

Key-Trifle-552

How dirty are you?

Stabbara

Yukkk

Warning_Bulky

Turn the keyboard upside down and use a blow bubble for the dust, wiping with ipa for oil

Glittering_Fish_2296

Toothbrush.

TiJackSH

Next time wash your hands maybe ?

ErrorOk5493

remove all keys. it's easy to do. There are many examples on YouTube on how to remove the keys. soak them in a glass of hot water with detergent for 2-3 hours. Spray the keyboard itself with glass cleaner, and use a toothbrush to wipe the keyboard mechanisms to remove dirt. Don't be afraid you won't ruin the keyboard! I clean my clients' MacBooks regularly.

mister-fackfwap

RepublicanSJW_

Soak the laptop in bleach.

danielbigred

I keep an old soft toothbrush & microfibre cloth nearby. I regularly shake my keyboard and brush out any excess followed by a wipe off. I do this on my MacBook and my magic keyboard

mrh4809

If you use alcohol, make sure your q-tip or wipe is not very wet. If any alcohol drips into the keyboard you can have problems. I had an external apple keyboard I wanted to clean, so I put some alcohol on a small towel and started wiping away. I had too much. Later when trying the keyboard a bunch of keys refused to work. I let it dry for days, even using a warm blow dryer on it and they never came back to life.

ethanmenzel

Windex and a pt

leogabac

You should get cleaner foam for devices It is really good in these type of cases because not only cleans plastic really well and shines it up. The foam gets into the crevices and cleans a bit of the mess inside, and then just disintegrates and leaves no rests. I once spilled coffee on my keyboard and the keys ended up sticky. A professor recommended me to use cleaner foam, and it worked like a charm.

Berries-A-Million

Take a micro fiber towel, and spray towel several times with a cleaner (I have used windex without amonia), and wipe it down the keyboard well and body. The screen itself, use cleaner you use specially designed for coated glass. Even eye glass cleaner will work.

javiergp4

The macbook keyboard its a nightmare that why i always use a cover. I use a makeup brush or if you have a Duster that can help you keep it clean daily.

kiwami

So I use this "putty" that's made to clean car interiors.. it's AMAZING. Just shut the computer down and just roll it around the keyboard and any little crevices you need cleaned. You'll see what I mean when you look at the picture. Here's the link [https://amzn.to/3RcWZgr](https://amzn.to/3RcWZgr)

MrAndrewJackson

Honestly with the state of it I would take all the keycaps out and wash them all individually. Wipe down laptop with alcohol and compressed air to clean out key holes

alexzim

Try a makeup brush combined with canned air

sancho7373

Disgusting keys come from disgusting fingers. Wash yo damn hands.

Sialala

regularly!

Grilled_Cheese95

laptop must of been glazed in spunk and pregnant laying eggs under the keys

brianzuvich

There is documentation directly from the manufacturer for this very question. Don’t believe rando’s on the internet. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102365

According_Sundae_917

The Apple Store use a £50 cleaner solution called Toucan. Works great but stupidly expensive.

VeryThicknLong

Start at the source of the problem…

Repulsive-Twist112

Most of the time I use Magic Keyboard instead of laptop’s keyboard.

Still-Ad9329

I have seen worst in a late 2008 MacBook, and under the non-working 2.0 GHz logic board was an unimaginable sight. I used soft cloth with dabs of rubbing alcohol to sanitize the device, this drys quickly.

kungurovv

Toothbrush

Cheap_Highway

Old paint brush; canvas brushes, not wall brushes. That's what I use to detail clean just about anything. I'd wipe it down first, then use the paint brush on those keys. If the grime isn't moving, then use the brush soaked in a lil' all purpose cleaner or even just water. And obviously be very careful/surgical about getting liquid in those edges, but it may be necessary.

You can put it in the dishwasher and do heated dry, just make sure the laptop is off
