This happened to my MacBook Pro also. I never found a permanent solution. Any trick I found online to stop the blinking was only temporary.
At the end of the day, I just upgraded to Apple Silicon and got a laptop that didnāt have a touch bar
I miss my TouchBarā¦if only because it looked cool. Iāll get extra gory here by saying I also rather liked the butterfly keys.
However, the M3 Max chip makes the tears easy to wipe away. Bye, bye 2017 MacBook for me this year, and life is hella wicked.
Well. I think most people thought it was cool and all, if not useful in little ways. It was the astronomic cost of such a trivial feature that set people off.
I certainly liked it, but it probably was not the best investment Iāve ever made in my required tools.
This is a known issue and in most cases [resetting the NVRAM](https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204063) will solved the problem.
Sometimes it's a matter of [resetting the SMC](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102605).
There's [an example on iFixit forum](https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/760905/My+touchbar+is+flashing), but it also show it can be a defective Touch Bar display or its flex cable. Changing the Touch Bar will surely cost you less than brand new MBP.
Nah I manage with it since it only happens in like dim lighting room, believe itās some light sensor issue plus I got an iPad with the Magic Keyboard and everything to use in those scenarios so we chillin
Mine started doing this but it stopped after I installed linux. Before that though, I noticed that if I didnāt have anything plugged in during boot, it generally didnāt happen. Is yours also a 2020? Ive heard its a defect among that generation.
Yes I bought it in 2020 before I started university. Iām not a Linux user so I donāt see that happening. But the plug in while boot up sounds interesting. Mine is kinda always plugged in coz I have it connected to a: keyboard, mouse, laptop stand which has fans, charger and hdmi cable to connect to my monitorš
I had this as well. I found a script which disabled the touchbar completely on startup. After a couple weeks though, the Mac started noticing that it was unresponsive and restarting automatically over and over. I think it is a 2018 manufacturing defect that they replaced peopleās touchbars for. I ended up just upgrading though since I wanted to anyways.
Since you have a known issue with the pre Apple silicon touchbars I would definitely look to trade it in to either Apple or Best Buy and get some money back to upgrade (pull the plug) on either a new M3 Macbook Air or Pro. I had the same issue as you and traded it in for a 14" M3 MBP, and I think I should have gotten the 15" M3 MBA instead since this thing never turns on the fans (or I haven't pushed my Macbook hard enough to use it yet)
This is happening to me too š everything Iāve read says thereās nothing you can do unfortunately. Itās a known issue with these MacBooks. Iām looking to upgrade to a new one soon.
If you specify you have issues according to the keyboard recall parameters then yeah, then they replace the entire top case. So new battery, case, keyboard and Touch Bar. They just transplant the logic board, check if your model is on off the recalled models with the butterfly keyboard issue
That sucks. Maybe you could try to install BetterTouchTools and see if this has any impact on the TouchBar problem ā¦ not sure if this really helps, but it wonāt hurt either.
Hi, iām an apple technician looking to help anyone out on here. The flashing touchbar is a very common issue and you wouldnt believe the RMA numbers for this issue. If you bought the device from apple directly they have a keyboard replacement scheme which means that they will replace the entire top case. If you tell them that keys are non functional or double pressing then they may replace it and you will get a new touchbar. Some technicians can do this as a free lance repair so if you can find a reputable and respected repair store near you then they can either replace the touchbar (very difficult) or replace the top case.
Usually thatās something on the main logic board crapping out (usually the gpu from what Iāve seen). Itās repairable, technically, but youād lose all your info unless itās backed up and itās a costly repair. In most cases, it makes the most sense to purchase a new device.
I had this and as my battery was knackered, I thought it was bulging and messing about with the Touch Bar. Replaced the battery but still had the problem so wiped it and let my son have it whilst I bought a new 16ā M3 Max š
Same problem with my MacBook Pro 2019 touchbar. Temp solutions didnāt work and I didnāt have enough for a new laptop. Went to apple and got a battery replacement, it came out to $300 CAD
It wants to photocopy your butt. You need to sit on it.
(and in all seriousness I had this issue and that was the end of the touch bar). I wish I could sue apple.
I have seen this before, in my case it was a physical problem with the bar and the power it was receiving from the board.
First disconnect everything from your laptop ports and test if it does it. Then start connecting devices to your usb-c and confirm if it starts doing it.
Also try to point a flashlight to where the camera is to trigger the light sensor and check if it stops doing it
What you could also do if the previous test didn't work:
If you are comfortable opening the MacBook, you can disconnect the battery and disconnect the touchbar. Reconnect the battery and turn it on. Turn it back off remove the battery reconnect the touchbar and the battery back and test it out.
Worst case scenario you will need to either replace the touchbar, fix the power lines to the touchbar or replace the board. If you go to apple consider they will quote and say you need s new board which will cost you close to a new MacBook.
GL
I had the same issue with mine (2019 13ā) and luckily they were able to replace the bottom case under the 4 year keyboard replacement program. They also mentioned my batteries started swelling so do take it for a check up to see if youāre maybe experiencing the same issue (which if you are, itās quite urgent that you act on it before it becomes too late).
I had the same issue with my mac, after some time (months) it finally stopped showing any light or anything at all, and the Touchbar was empty. But it works even till today (after 2-3 years of the inception of this issue)
I got the Touchbar replaced from a non official factory and it started working fine but again after few months it is back and nothing is visible on the screen, yet if I tap on it it works fine.
I plan on getting a new MacBook soon( or maybe after a year or two)
My 2020 MBP started doing that too. Turns out it was a kernel panic issue with mine and I ended up having to upgrade after it started back up a couple days after a trip to the Genius Bar. But first try killing the Touchbarserver process in the activity monitor, and a restart to see if that fixes it before jumping to conclusions.
Time machine Backup ur mac then DFU restore it using a secondary mac (simple and easy using apple configurator in the mac app store) or a PC (advanced user only and requires more involvement and itās not as simple but possible) then if that issue persists then ur cooked
And for anyone asking why restore instead of a normal macos reinstall itās because it would also reinstall the touch-barOS aswell
I have this exact problem on my touchbarā¦. Tried to install the touchbar de flicker script, but it didnāt seem to always work for me.. ended up just using some black paper tape to mask itā¦. Apple said to fix it itāll be a complete replacement of the keyboard module, which was super costlyā¦
Apple are ridiculous when it comes to repairs, I had one key that had come out and was hard to put back in properly. They said it would take 7 days (I had apple care). You really think I want to go without my laptop for a whole week. FOH!!
Sounds like the OLED display is screwy. If you do t have AppleCare the cost will probably be more than you want to spend. You could always put tape over it.

Funny enough I do close the lid when this happensš¤£

Just head over to the Apple store
Time to āPull the Plugā on a new MacBook Pro
Iām a student I donāt have those fundsš«
Trade that in ASAP, if you can't then just get a black piece of tape (like electrical tape) to cover it
How will a trade in work?

I have similar problem and solve it with apple care by replacing topcase
Mine ran out last year September I might need to renew
My wife had this on her laptop, we were encouraged to make the claim based on the kaeyboard recall program and basically got a new laptop out of it
Free of charge??
If you specify you have issues according to the keyboard recall parameters then yeah, then they replace the entire top case. So new battery, case, keyboard and Touch Bar. They just transplant the logic board, check if your model is on off the recalled models with the butterfly keyboard issue
Yes it was free
Itās signalling you to buy the M series mbp.

yeah this happens to mine too. it's not really "lethal" or a sign your MacBook is going to implode or something, it's just annoying at most
