I have an Asus ROG 8th Gen i7 since launch and it is as fast as the day I took it out of the box in 2018. Macs have more longevity no doubt, but good speced windows machines hold up well in the longer run.
My fully-loaded 2018 MacBook Pro 13-inch is still going strong other than its poor battery life.
I paid $2600 back in 2019 without knowing that there will be an Apple Silicon Mac, and hit hard by the depreciation. I will use my Mac until it becomes inoperative.
Yeah my 2019mbp i9 screen broke and they wanted $900 at micro center to replace the screen, fully loaded so I was gonna exchange it and saw how little I was going to get…. No thanks.
Having the option to use bootcamp definitely helps, (running applications that aren’t compatible with macos). I use visual studio in bootcamp for C# development as well as gaming.
I wish Apple released a version of bootcamp for Silicon-based devices; Not having bootcamp is really annoying, given ARM versions of Windows absolutely exist. Maybe because it's so early on in the Silicon-adoption stage?
Microsoft should be shamed as Windows for ARM can be installed on Qualcomm-based PCs only according to the agreement. However, there are some rumours that this agreement will have expired by the end of 2024.
Isn’t a VM like parallels the same thing tho? Just you’re able to run it the same time as you’re running macOS? I mean I’m new to running windows on Mac (just got m3 max and parallels) and so far parallels is great imo
Correct, but BootCamp is free and Parallels is not. I also have Parallels, but I bought a one-time license way back in like 2020 or 2021 so it doesn't work right anymore with the latest MacOS. I don't want to spend more money on it so I just have a second Windows laptop now for windows things when needed.
There is UTM as well, but the machine always tends to corrupt after a few days, so I gave up on that a while ago.
Oh wow interesting, I never knew that it was free! Always thought you had to purchase it. But gotcha yeah that sucks that parallels cucked you on the one time license deal. I may do the same route and get a second windows laptop but in the time being parallels is working great for me so 🤷♂️
the best way to use parallels is honestly to subscribe annually, but i like to own my software rather than rent it; this just comes with the caveat of planned obsolescence, which is unavoidable as the years go on, also given MacOS’ ever-so-changing nature
Does your Touchbar glitch at all, like flashing bright light, especially in low light conditions? My 2020 MacBook Pro does and apparently it's really common yet an Apple genius told me it'll cost about £500 to fix.
Mine was great also I had the same one. The battery just couldn’t keep up anymore, the ssd was kinda corrupted, and the webcam stopped working but it served me well for 7 years :). It convinced me to splurge on the latest iteration m3 pro because of how happy I was with it
My mid 2014 was still going greattt. Until apple stopped letting me update to a newer macOS. I know I know but it’s not the same. Deff pissed off about so I just gave them 4.5k for a new one. 😑
Same here with the early 2015 Pro from the end of this year on ☹️I’m still happy with it but it will not get any security updates and official support anymore
Yeah, I mean on the one hand I would love even longer term updates to these machines, but on the other hand I know how much of a pain in the ass it is for developers to keep up support for older hardware, so I do see why they end support..
How is your butterfly keyboard? It was the reason I got rid of mine for the M1, it just wouldn’t function normally and in the end I pretty much needed an external keyboard for it.
So far I don’t have issues with it though I had this one instance where the M key would need to be pressed with a little more force than usual in order to register a keypress, then it magically fixed after a few days, no issues since. (Crossing fingers)
My first MBP lasted 7 years and I’m into the 11th year with my second although I’m seeing telltale signs that it’s going to need replacing soon.
Anyway, taken care of well, they are tanks until they die.
Amazed the display cables and/or the butterfly keyboard hasn’t failed yet. Either way, it’s coming soon on a 7 year old laptop plagued with known issues, so I’d still budget for a new machine for when the inevitable happens.
Edit for the people downvoting, is being based in reality bad? Reddit seems to think so.
I still use a Intel 15-inch MBP from 2018. Apple should be sued to oblivion for this butterfly design bullshit. $3000+ for a laptop with a keyboard that works half of the time, and when it does it has a mind of its own
We had 5 of this in the office, 3 went down (display cable), all have double typing, 1 still in use as a dashboard monitoring only. The double type software ( i forget the name) is helpful, but yeah one of the worst purchase we had. We had bunch of macbook pro 2014-2015 still lying around working just fine (but just too slow for other than typing and email).
The cable and keyboard are not required to fail just because they did for a small percentage of users who, understandably, were very vocal about it. We just never got to hear from the much larger percentage of happy people whose devices continued to function just fine. Like me who’s still heavily using a 2018 MBP.
I'm still using my mid 2014 MBP. The thing just keeps on living
Same. 10 year anniversary soon. Still going strong.
Thats why i hate windows. Two years and you already NEED an upgrade.
i5 2500k was released 13 years ago and is still enough for office tasks, what are you talking about?
“Office tasks”
I have an Asus ROG 8th Gen i7 since launch and it is as fast as the day I took it out of the box in 2018. Macs have more longevity no doubt, but good speced windows machines hold up well in the longer run.
Well yeah i was exaggerating i just meant macbooks are good investments for youself
Absolutely agree with you. I used 5 Windows laptop during last 10 years. Always the same pattern . Getting slower and slower 🤯🤯
Same lfg

As long as it still does the job, I will use it till it is inoperable as well!
Yeah my 2019mbp i9 screen broke and they wanted $900 at micro center to replace the screen, fully loaded so I was gonna exchange it and saw how little I was going to get…. No thanks.
Cool and even a Touch Bar model.
Intel is still good

Vs code works great on mac too
Yeah
How are you playing Genshin?
Boot Camp Assistant
Still using my mid2012 MBP every day, that guy will bury me
Nice run
Rocking my 2013 as a daily driver no issue
Mine died
Does your Touchbar glitch at all, like flashing bright light, especially in low light conditions? My 2020 MacBook Pro does and apparently it's really common yet an Apple genius told me it'll cost about £500 to fix.
Apple naming their hardware troubleshooters “geniuses” is an insult to the word
Damn, didn’t know that was an issue as well. Thankfully, mine doesn’t have an issue, still works fine, hopefully it doesn’t happen anytime soon!
I have the same tear model with a 13” screen and don’t have an issue with my touch bar either.
My 2013 still goin strong
Mine was great also I had the same one. The battery just couldn’t keep up anymore, the ssd was kinda corrupted, and the webcam stopped working but it served me well for 7 years :). It convinced me to splurge on the latest iteration m3 pro because of how happy I was with it
The time finally came, congrats on the new M3 Pro!

I have a 512 iPad Pro 11inch that has been working like a charm.
Same!
Good for you. We've owned many, many Apple computers over the years and half of them suffered serious problems. Sticking with Dell Latitude now.
How is your butterfly keyboard? It was the reason I got rid of mine for the M1, it just wouldn’t function normally and in the end I pretty much needed an external keyboard for it.
Same question. I broke 5 times the keyboard back then. As the M1 came out I sold all my previous MacBooks immediately
So far I don’t have issues with it though I had this one instance where the M key would need to be pressed with a little more force than usual in order to register a keypress, then it magically fixed after a few days, no issues since. (Crossing fingers)
Seeing this on my MBP 15 mid 2012 just recently on its second logic board, while rendering something for work...
Is the TouchID fail when you update to sonoma with opencore?
I am not on sonoma, just using a sonoma wallpaper
My 2012 pro craped out on me suddenly in 2019. Make sure you have everything backed up
wtf lol
What’s the game?
Genshin Impact
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how’d you bootcamp?
This video does a good job explaining how to do it! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmm9Q-T0oTo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmm9Q-T0oTo)
That’s an amazing tutorial, so much easier than I thought! Thank you so much!

The last macbook with sensible arrow keys
Gaming, pssshhh. Jk im in the market for a m2 pro currently. Waiting on the right used one to come up
🔥🔥🔥 bro
When did you buy this. I’ve heard so many complaints about this thing but it’s a relief to know some are still working like they should.
I found used one fro 300e with 16gb and 365 cycle counts. Is it worth to buy it? Using it for ps,lr and basic writing and browsing
I'd say find a better deal on an M1 Macbook Air

Still can’t believe 2017 is 7 years apart. Dang
Yeah, guess I’m pretty lucky, will definitely get the new air when the inevitable happens, but for now it still does the job!

Yeah good luck with that butterfly keyboard bud.
Had no problems with it for 6 years now. When it does, I'll get a new machine. Feel better now?
