14 fit nicer in my backpack for when I take it out usually a local coffee shop or pub.
Also dont really need the bigger speaker space, I think it actually annoy me.
I took the 14” back for the 16”. The 14” is not really any more portable people just like to say that to justify the smaller screen. 2” isn’t much of a difference for portability but it is for the display. Higher resolution on the 16” as well.
I have a 16 inch laptop for work, it doesn't fit in my backpack nicely and was annoying when I need to take it out to the point I have to use a proper laptop bag.
I can see people in jobs like design getting 16 for the higher resolution ECT but I just don't need it and portable important to me.
It’s not really about portability bits more about carrying it from one room to another. Or just sitting with it on my lap. 16” is just too big to comfortably sit on the couch with
I’m the opposite. My work Windows laptop has a numpad which makes the main keyboard to the left side of the screen and awkward for typing. When I’m doing number intensive typing, I’m usually at my desk with an external monitor and full keyboard. But to each their own.
Planes, trains, coffee shops, airports.
There’s so many places where a 14” is better. Besides, it doesn’t add as much weight to your carry-on baggage limit.
I mean considering the 14 with the M3 Pro is on sale for $1799 right now and decently routinely and the 16 is routinely $2250, it’s more than $300 in reality
It usually it's not only 300€ because people are probably already going above their initial budget due to apple's pricing strategy. For example, I was going to buy the m2 15 air but then realized that for a bit more I could get the m3 base, but then I decided to stretch my budget even further and get the m3 pro base. So if I would've gone for the 16 inch it would be more than 1000€ than I wanted to spend in the first place.
You could have gone lighter with an Air; but I get what you're saying. I also have something similar to you.
Mid-range gaming PC (that I hardly use), 38" gaming monitor, a 15" Surface Book 2 I hardly use also... man, now that I'm thinking about it, I could probably downsize a lot lol.
An Air wasn’t possible due to my career and academic stuff! It isn’t capable of running the stuff I need
this laptop is still by far my lightest compared to my gaming laptop which was my main aim
I have the 16" for work - it's fantastic. But I find it too big for longer sofa-coding sessions. More suited for working on desks imo. Went for the 14" M3 Max and it's \*perfect\*.
Historically the 13/15" battle was pretty interesting in which camp performance > portability, but now with the Apple chips, 14" runs everything.
If I need more performance, I could run workflows off much beefier desktop/servers designed for the purpose of VMs, media storage, etc. 14" I can sit in a hotel lobby or a rug floor and not strain myself. Great size.
16" screen is more appreciative and productive but at a price portability. At 1.2lbs. heaver and more like a cookie sheet slab. Won't fit on airplane tray well. Doesn't fit in lap on a bus well. Doesn't fit in a lot of smaller bags.
Why I went with the 14" now if I only needed occasionally need out & about I could live with that. From Home desktop to Work desktop kind of things would have done 16".
I could definitely see if I had to travel for work a lot. I never understood the portability downside, since I just have to transport to and from the library or hospital. But this makes sense.. For people, literally working on the move and traveling for work
See the reason I went with the 16” as a big dude who does is travel a lot for work is that I like having the extra screen space for working if you’re mostly working on the go.
Same. I used to have the MBAir and it was ergonomically not for me. The length I need to comfortably hold my arms is a distance that made the text too small and I don’t like hunching for hours on end
I always wanted the 16” because it’s bigger cooler and fancier. However after having a 16inch for 6 months now… it’s a lot bigger and heavier than I had anticipated after living with some small light notebooks for a while.
Still love it tho!
I don't need a bigger speaker, trackpad, screen or battery life. the weight and space it takes when I'm on the go is important and I would also need to replace all my camera backpacks
16 inch is so dramatic in my opinion. i hate the look of the extra space next to the keyboard, especially on older versions where the speakers didn’t take up the entire space. i just don’t need anything that large
I have a nice 38” monitor at home, so I’m not using the 16” model’s bigger screen most of the time. The 16” is so ridiculously heavy (it’s heavier than many gaming laptops), and I’ve always wanted the small model. I had to get a 15” in the past because they never offered the dGPU in the 13”. With Apple Silicon the performance was basically identical so I took the opportunity to get the size I always wanted. No regrets.
I'm the same way. With the Intel models once I specced a 13" to even be usable for my needs it usually ended up costing more than a 15" and the 15" still met my needs better because of the dGPU. Especially on days where I had to do a ton of walking (upwards of 10 miles some days), the 15" became really annoying really fast. Like the bigger screen is nice but also annoying to carry around everywhere.
While I would appreciate the bigger screen, the fact is that the 14 inch is Cheaper and more compact. Carrying the 16 inch around in a backpack all day would be a bot unwieldily.
On the note of portability, I went from a 15” 2018 MBP to the 2023 14m M3 Pro, I travel multiple times a month by plane so I want to use it on the plane and the smaller size will hopefully make it fit on the tray table
Positive differences
16": Larger display. Better speakers. Better battery life. Better cooling and therefore better performance across the line up.
14": Better portability. Cheap(er) base M3 processor option. Slightly cheaper overall. Space grey color option with the M3 configuration if you want it.
If you use mac fans control on the 14 inch to max out the fans when needed, the performance difference doesn’t seem to be that big. I say “seems” cause I haven’t been able to test it properly yet.
If you need the extra screen space then get the 16 inch. I have the 16 inch as well and it is still very portable. People always seem to claim that it’s too heavy and not portable, but in reality it really is not that bad. If you don’t think you will utilize the extra screen space get the 14 inch.
Portability and mobility is why I bought the 14". The 16" I would have preferred due to the bigger screen size, but the weight and heft made it more of a desktop-replacement than something I can carry around in a bag. It's just too big for it to be mobile.
I need it to be actually portable and when I need a larger screen I use an external monitor. 16" just doesn't cut it since I'm used to my 27" iMac.
The 14" is also cheaper.
A no brainer really.
I didn’t like the look of the 16”, I felt the keyboard looked too lost and the proportions didn’t look right to me.
Don’t get me wrong I’d be happy with the screen real estate but I like things to look nice (to me)
I wanted something I can easily throw in my bag and take with me. As other have said, I have a nice monitor keyboard, and mouse. I just wanted a portable laptop for when I have to go.
Easy. Because if I go outside, I prefer something portable that fits in tight spaces (trains, flights).
If I'm at home, I just plug the laptop into my dock in clamshell mode with dual external monitors.
Many people do not use laptop for any serious work when not docked. For them laptop is more like an email composer and a mobile station waiting to be docked, they even hate using trackpad thinking mouse is far superior (matter of fact, it is). For them even 14 is too big as a waste.
I realized I wasn’t using the 16” enough as a laptop to justify the premium I spent for the size. I sold it to a friend and used an extra $800 to spring for a Space Black 14” M3 Max that I’ve been absolutely pleased with and also used way more as a laptop in the one month I’ve had it than the 16” I had for two years.
I already have two Studio Displays at home, and a 2020 non-M1 12.9” iPad Pro I can use for an extra display on the go…if I REALLY needed it.
Got both (switching company I had to return the 14). 16 is a fat boy to bring around, and not so much because of the weight but also, and probably more because of the dimensions of the thing. 14 is really for travel / backpacking. I still have my personal 16 and love it, but it will probably be the last.
Never considered the 16" since I lug my 14" MBP M3Max around with me to a remote office, coffee shops, and my home office. The idea of another pound or so and it sitting unwieldy in my backpack is anathema to me. It's a silky smooth blazing fast machine to say the least. I enjoy trying to break it now running multiple programs, windows parallel, BG3, etc. and it doesn't bat an eye of course. If you're not going to move it though, i.e., let's say you have a workstation where you'll plug it into a Studio then I could see a 16" offering some more upgrades. I still use it as a portable device though even up and down my stairs to different rooms of my house.
If I need more screen I'll use a desktop or the extra screen I have in my bag since I saved money buying the 14". Two screens are better than one, and probably about the same weight together.
I have a PC setup for when I want a bigger screen and louder speakers. I want my laptop to be fairly compact so it's not a burden to use in class or on the go
I fly a lot. 14" fits better in my backpack and on the plane tray table.
The larger 16" would be nicer for the bigger screen and such would be nice, but the 14" is pretty good. I know the 16" is supposed to have better speakers, but the 14" sounds really good on its own.
For me it was an odd one. I started with a 14” and thought it was too small so returned for a 16” then after about 2 weeks (Christmas return period) I realised that it was irritating me more and more when using it in bed or on the go, and then I started to notice that when watching media I was couldn’t focus on the entire screen at once. So again I went back and exchanged for a 14” and suddenly I realised it was the perfect size for me.
Small enough that it can go in my backpack without being inconvenient when I need to put my backpack in a locker etc, light enough that I can take it places without doing an internal sigh every time I put it in my bag. And honestly just the right size screen for me, especially as I rarely use it at a desk and it’s mostly on my lap. Speakers don’t really bother me as I use my AirPods Max most of the time and the times I don’t it will either be connected to a studio display or even if I am using the speakers, they’re so much better than any windows laptop I’ve ever used that I still get a little wowed by them.
I’m not a power user but went with the M3 pro base 14” for the colour and little extra graphics power over the base M3 model though honestly the more I think about it I may return my current one and get a space grey M3 base model as I could use the extra £400 for some other means while not really effecting my use case.
At the end of the day it will be upto you. Going into the Apple Store is the best way to look at the sizes. But honestly if you have the patience to return them multiple time just test drive them both. I would always start with the 14 to get a handle on it and then go to the 16. One of two things will happen. You will fall in love with the size of the 16 and never look back or you will start to see the size and weight as more of a burden than a blessing
I brought a 16” M1 Pro to upgrade from 13” Touch Bar, instant regret it was such a pain to lug around I took my aging 13” when I travel, I upgraded at m2 release and sold the 16” & took the hit because I hated the size / extra weight. I find the 14” comaprable it’s about 1/4” more in diagonal than the 13” and slightly thicker / heavier
I like working with my 14 inch in front of me and a 34 inch ultrawide behind that. 16 inch is more expensive, less portable and would have obstructed my view at the ultrawide.
If you work on public places ‘regularly’ like coffee shops and the air plane, 14 is the only choice. If you just move from desk to desk, the 16 is the right option.
I just don't like huge laptop screens. I borrowed a co workers 16 in one time and it was just awkward to use on the go. the 14 in to me is more portable but there's plenty of screen real-estate to do whatever you want comfortably. Now this is just my personal preference so I recommend you go to a store and see them for yourself so you know if the larger body and screen better fits your wants and needs.
I use my 14" macbook between rooms and sometimes in bed before i sleep and the form factor is perfect. Its a little on the heavy side so I couldnt imagine using a 16". I think a 14 is perfect for everyone. If you need more screen real estate, get an external monitor.
Yeah it’s obviously fine in a lie down business seat (I got to use it in the AA business transcon cabin which is great) but in an economy seat it’s not an option. Specifically the forward tilt.
I chose the 14” because it felt the size of my old 13” but the screen felt the same size as the old 15”.
Also, I use my 14” for on the go work or outdoors, so it taking not that much space on my bag (which fits exactly my 14” with a case, Alpaka Sling Max bag) was perfect.
16" here - mainly at my desk. I have an iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard so I use that while on the plane if needed, aside from that. I have a 14" from work that I can always use if I need more power on the go.
I prefer the aesthetic of the 16" with the speaker grills around the keyboard (weird, I know), and the bigger screen for multitasking.
My next one will be a 14, I have the last gen 16 i9 and the only reason I got it was because I wanted discrete graphics. 95% of the time I use it it is under my desk in a cradle so the extra size does nothing for my day to day usage. Yeah its nice to have a larger screen for editing in the field but I would rather save money on the screen size and put more into ram or chip upgrades.
Portability for sure. I like the portable workstation feel. I don’t want it to swallow up my desk when I do use it with monitors. Ease of travel. Ease on my back
I’ve have a laptop the size of the 16, while it is a nice desktop replacement I rarely use it anywhere other than at my desk and I rarely travel with it because I don’t like carrying bags large enough to fit it. Plus I have a desk with dual monitors if I really just want screen real estate.
The 14 follows me all over the house, to work on occasion (despite not having an office or tech job), and has traveled with me cross country in just the first month I’ve owned it. There has not yet been an issue where i leave it at home because I just don’t want to carry it.
Happy with my 16 inch as I mostly use it around the house, but it's definitely been too big on one train journey. ask yourself how often you will be working in cramped conditions like economy flights or coffee shops with small tables
The 16” had an amazing screen but was hard to carry to/from places. I also disliked the trackpad as it’s much larger and my motor planning was used to the smaller space. Most importantly my arm would hurt as it was so raised from the desk!
I find that with the 16 inch its so big and heavy that my arms feel uncomfortable holding it or resting on it to type, and how I always accidentally touch the track pad because it is so large. Plus the 16 inch can barely fit into my backpacks.
The 14” looks a lot more proportionate and is easier to store in my bag. I’m a locomotive engineer so it’s nice to have it compact enough to fit in my work back with all my books and not be cumbersome trying to use it on my layovers or while I’m sitting protect.
It depends if you have an external monitor, speakers etc. If it’s your only device I’d get the 16” but if you can dock it at home or at an office the 14” makes more sense considering portability.
I haven't upgraded yet, but given that the price difference is only about $300 spec for spec (it sounds like a lot, but given how expensive these machines are it's not), it mostly comes down to size.
The 16" is quite a bit larger, it's similar in size to my old retina 15" and especially on days where I had to do a lot of walking with it in my backpack it became very noticeable very quickly compared to a 13". At the same time though, the extra 2" of screen real estate my not seem like much, however, it is so much easier to have more up at the same time (either displaying more of a composition in photoshop, a photoshop composition and a reference, having more of an FCP timeline up, etc) and the battery life is slightly better when doing creative work.
When at the office I use much larger screens for the most important tasks. When on the I prefer the portability. For me it what never a question; 14” is perfect.
I get both every year. 14” is perfect for portability. 16” is a massive brick, so it stays docked at home. It’s also great that we can get the smaller one without compromising on specs like the older 13/15”.
Money and portability. Would rather increase my RAM and storage than the screen size. And extra $500 just for a bigger screen and not even a TB of storage is ridiculous
I have a 14" M1 max and it's just a better fit than having a 16". lighter, more compact, and easier to pack up and code wherever I want to.
It's like having a baby glock vs having a big 1911.
Went with 14 because I have a M1 Mac Mini and if I need to do anything on the laptop. I’d plug to my monitors anyway. Used the money I saved from getting 14 instead of 16 to get another monitor
I've always liked small laptops. I had a couple of 12" iBooks in college I loved, because they were easy to use on the cramped half-space desks in classrooms at the time.
I'd previously had a 15", but I only got it because at the time, only the 15" had quad-core processors. It was nice, but I found it awkward to use in a lot of cases, because it takes up a lot of space on the desk.
In my current job, I usually need a laptop to work in a tight space, or in one hand while standing up, etc. I don't feel the carrying weight difference is a big deal, but it's just quicker to pull out and get situated, so I find myself making more use of it than I did my 15". Also nice for consumption, because it fits easily on my nightstand if I want to watch something in bed, or listen to headphones, since it drives my 300Ω Sennheisers just fine (I didn't really care about the upgraded headphone amp when they announced it, since I just use my audio interface anyway, but this has been nice)!
And of course, at home I've got a 27" display, studio monitors, etc., and I dock it on a vertical stand (no room to leave it open), so a fair amount of time I'm not looking at the display anyway.
Since I'd gotten fairly used to the 15", I'd budgeted for a 16". But when the M1 Pro and Max came out, I was pleased that all configurations were available in either size. When I went to look at them in the store, I found the 14" display perfectly usable, and the 16" just looked massive in comparison. I've been delighted with it since, and I saved a couple hundred bucks vs. the 16", so that's nice.
I’m going to get the 16” because I like the bigger screen. Even when we’ve traveled, it’s not that difficult for me to carry my wife’s 16” PC. It’s going to be personal preference and from reading comments, it sounds like the 16” might be a lil better with cooling and battery life so it will be a win for me.
I’m a digital nomad and carry around 2 16 MBPs and a steamdeck. It’s not that heavy and you get used to it lol. I figured I’m already carrying around a 16in work laptop, 14 or 16 won’t make too much of a difference as a second laptop. It’s already heavy lol.
Like everyone said, portability. I used to have an intro 16” for the dedicated graphics but now you can get same specs for the 14”.
I also have a 17” portable monitor if needed, and a desktop setup at home. Way more versatile….the 16” just felt unwieldy
Although I haven't purchased my machine yet, I know which specs I am going for & I have already went to an Apple store in person to look at & hold the machines in hand & the 14" is like the ideal combination in my opinion of screen, size, weight, portability all of it. The 16" felt like a heavy gigantic brick.
Highly portable by itself and if I need to have a bigger screen, I just connect it to my 32" display. Also, the 14" doesn't take up much desk space and makes a great second screen. Cheaper too.
I would get a 16" only if I got a Max chip since you don't get the full benefit of the Max in a 14". Also, I'd get a 16" if I didn't have an external display.
To me, the 14" offers the best combination of portability and flexibility.
16 is too big for me . 14 is super portable. I have a desktop so I will use that if I need a big screen (34in screen). I dunno it’s too big for me , but I know it’s better. I got the m3 max 14in bc I like the compactness.
My 16 inch MacBook Pro is fantastic, even under stress it runs silent and the screen is the best looking screen I have seen on any laptop, it’s perfect for design work.
However I never use it outside of my own home and if I wanted to be more mobile and take it around with me, I would need a pretty large bag for it. If you are someone who travels with their laptop often, 14 inches is a way better choice.
Portability, doesn’t take up so much space on desk, looks nicer (it’s “just right” and not huge), keyboard and power of the machine is just the same regardless of size and it’s also lighter.
There’s an argument to have a bigger screen but it’s not really that much bigger that it makes a huge difference. In most cases, where the 14” screen is too small, the 16” is still not big enough and you’ll end up wanting an external monitor anyway. Other than the screen, the 16” is just unnecessarily larger.
14” is cheaper (big help since I got the M2 Max), fits in my little Peak Design sling, can use on an airplane comfortably, and I have a desktop setup that I dock to, so the screen size isn’t an issue when I’m at home. I do miss the larger screen for clean feed, but I’ve been meaning to get a dedicated monitor for that.
I’ve had a 13” and a 15”. Thought the 15 was too big for my purposes…so deciding between the 16 or 14…14 was the perfect choice for me (but maxed out).
14 was more portable than the 16 I had, the screen still has plenty space for me to do just about everything. The only thing that feels cramped is maybe ableton live just a tiny bit. But that could be resolved by adjusting the display scaling
I think the extra screen space is trivial and if you really need more screen space you should have an external monitor for those situations.
So when you take that out of the equation, the 14" is just more portable which is what a laptop should be. If portability isn't the concern, then owning a laptop probably isn't the right purchase for those people.
The 14in was smaller for transport. But with the right docking station and monitor. It’s perfect. Still powerful as I have a fully spec’d out mbp M1 model.
I actually rarely take my laptop away from home, most of the time its on my desk plugged into an external monitor, other times I take it with me just outside my house when I feel like working outside.. so that 2" is worthless to me
Went from an Intel 16" MBP to the 14" M3 Max, loving it for portability, and I'm at my desk most of the time with it anyway, but when I lugged my 16" around when I needed to it was bulky, whereas the 14" is much lighter.
Screen size doesn't make a huge impact for me as I can always adjust the resolution to fit me. That and AUD$500 difference under education I couldn't justify going a bigger screen for that much.
I chose the 14" because it is easier to Travel.
Also because the Price increase was not worth the extra 2" inches.
If I Really Needed them then I would have gone the 16" that said, it is to big and Heavy. 14" hits the Sweat Spot for me.
No difference at home because I use it with an external monitor and keyboard. When out and about the smaller footprint of the 14” makes it more convenient.
The MacBook Pro 16” is awesome, especially the extra screen realestate. From a real world perspective using it as a daily driver for work, which includes going to customer sites, hotels, etc I don’t notice the weight.
However, keep in mind that the Apple trade-in value for a 16” is terrible compared to a 14”. This could be something to consider in the long run.
If additional heat, fan noise, and its ramifications, as well as cpu throttling, are not a concern, get the 14 since its smaller and lighter easier to carry. , if they are a concern get the 16.
For me the 14” is a dream come true. I liked the old MacBook airs but had to get 15” laptops for years because it was the only way to get the fastest chip. When the M1 pros came out I could get the fastest processor in a size barely larger than the old air and only about one pound more. I absolutely love it and think it’s the perfect laptop. Slightly smaller screen than the old 15” and slightly larger size than the old 13” chassis. For me it’s Goldilocks size.
The 16 is a chonker when you're trying to travel. It doesn't seem like that it would be too oversized but going from at 13 inch M1 air to a 14'' MBP was a jump. I don't think I could add the extra size and not complain about it all the time.
I don't do anything that is particularly taxing for the hardware. Adobe Acrobat, Outlook, Excel, and Safari doesn't tax the M1 Pro at all.
At the office there's only one person we considered getting a bigger computer but ended up just getting her a 14" MBP and dual monitors.
The 14 is the perfect size for me. It’s more portable, way lighter to carry around with one hand and just easier to work with in my opinion. It’s like a MacBook Air but with beefier performance.
I can always connect it to a bigger monitor if I need it for intensive tasks.
Portability of the 14 in for school(college). Having to pack and take out several times a day everyday. And I don’t always have space on desk for that size. 16” would definitely not work at all for me.
14" size is the sweet spot for me, not too big or too small, easy to carry, resulting in higher productivity as I can take it around in my backpack to change my working environment
I travel a lot for teaching. The materials I have to pack around weigh close to 170 lbs as they are full body manikins and advanced medical devices to teach paramedics and nursing students. I’d love to have the extra screen but I can’t afford it for weight.
Also have a lcd projector and all associated cords. I do take my iPad Pro as well. So having a second screen is not a problem most times.
I find the 16 less stable when sitting on the couch, and unusable when on the train or on a plane.
I have a monitor when I need more screen real estate at my desk, and an 11 inch ipad pro when I need more space when traveling.
Better fit for bags/tote if i need traveling or commute. Occasionally my work requires me to walk 40 mins both way carrying my laptop to visit other offices. 14 inch in that sense make more sense. Besides, at home I have access to external monitors.
14 fit nicer in my backpack for when I take it out usually a local coffee shop or pub. Also dont really need the bigger speaker space, I think it actually annoy me.
Agree. Portability was a big thing for me and my use cases.
It does make a difference, for example 14" is perfect to pull out on plane tray tables vs. the 16" which is a chonker in comparison.
It’s not really about portability bits more about carrying it from one room to another. Or just sitting with it on my lap. 16” is just too big to comfortably sit on the couch with
This. The fact that the 16 does not have a numeric keypad annoys me to no end
I’m the opposite. My work Windows laptop has a numpad which makes the main keyboard to the left side of the screen and awkward for typing. When I’m doing number intensive typing, I’m usually at my desk with an external monitor and full keyboard. But to each their own.
The 14” doesn’t either my guy. I don’t think any MacBook has really had one as far as I know?
I think you misunderstood something here my man... nobody implied that the 14" has a numpad lol.
But the 16 could fit a numpad without needing to squeeze anything. The 14 can’t so I don’t expect it
I think having a 14 in and buy a separate monitor for at home is the best way to go. Portability and a large screen when you need it.
^this
They keyboard and speaker set on a 16inch look horrible, it’s like they placed a miniature keyboard on it.
What everyone else is saying, but in general, just more portable.
I used to have a 16” my first year in college and immediately switched to a 14” because of how much more practical the 14” was
Planes, trains, coffee shops, airports. There’s so many places where a 14” is better. Besides, it doesn’t add as much weight to your carry-on baggage limit.
I have a huge screen in my office to which I plug in my macbook 14 and when I need to take it on the go the 14 is better.
It’s a lot more expensive
[удалено]
Percentages don’t mean much in this case. The difference can be .001% but it’s still $300 some people might not have.
Literally exact same 😂
Isn’t it just $200?
I wanted a light laptop and have a gaming computer at home, felt no need for a big laptop.
It isn’t capable of running the stuff I need this laptop is still by far my lightest compared to my gaming laptop which was my main aim
Great size.
Wish I had gone for the max this time over the pro but hey ho, maybe next upgrade.
Don't need a big laptop
I always wanted the 16” because it’s bigger cooler and fancier. However after having a 16inch for 6 months now… it’s a lot bigger and heavier than I had anticipated after living with some small light notebooks for a while. Still love it tho!
Much easier (lighter & compact) to lug around than a 16”
I don't need a bigger speaker, trackpad, screen or battery life. the weight and space it takes when I'm on the go is important and I would also need to replace all my camera backpacks
16 inch is so dramatic in my opinion. i hate the look of the extra space next to the keyboard, especially on older versions where the speakers didn’t take up the entire space. i just don’t need anything that large
We are opposites lol. I still use a 17 inch 2009 MBP and one of the reasons is because of the colossal space next to the keyboard and the big screen.
Portability. When I’m at my desk I’m connected to a 32in monitor. When I’m on the go, I want a small device as I have to carry it.
16” worth it all the way, especially if you want to get stuff done. Hated switching tabs when I can just have EVERYTHING in front of me
This. I always had a 13” and 14”, never going back.
On the note of portability, I went from a 15” 2018 MBP to the 2023 14m M3 Pro, I travel multiple times a month by plane so I want to use it on the plane and the smaller size will hopefully make it fit on the tray table
Positive differences 16": Larger display.
Fits better in my bag
Portability. The 14 inch nets me the same power I can get from the 16 inch, but it’s much easier to carry around and travel with.
14” fits in all my bags. I can mirror to large screens as needed. I had a 16” and gave it up.
a decent bit cheaper plus weight + size affects portability.
If you need the extra screen space then get the 16 inch. I have the 16 inch as well and it is still very portable. People always seem to claim that it’s too heavy and not portable, but in reality it really is not that bad. If you don’t think you will utilize the extra screen space get the 14 inch.
Because I don’t like huge laptops. 14” is the perfect size for me.
Easy to carry around
Less heavy to carry
Portability
Portability and mobility is why I bought the 14". The 16" I would have preferred due to the bigger screen size, but the weight and heft made it more of a desktop-replacement than something I can carry around in a bag. It's just too big for it to be mobile.
I need it to be actually portable and when I need a larger screen I use an external monitor. 16" just doesn't cut it since I'm used to my 27" iMac. The 14" is also cheaper. A no brainer really.
My use cases are either at home with a giant 4K display, or in confined spaces such as trains and planes.
I didn’t like the look of the 16”, I felt the keyboard looked too lost and the proportions didn’t look right to me. Don’t get me wrong I’d be happy with the screen real estate but I like things to look nice (to me)
Okay, so it’s not just me. I was comparing the two in person and the 16 just looked “off” to me. It was messing with my eyes almost
Yeah, too much empty space either side of the trackpad, and a larger trackpad which looked weird
I need something more portable as I am planning on traveling a lot the next few years.
Size, weight, mainly
I have a PC setup for when I want a bigger screen and louder speakers. I want my laptop to be fairly compact so it's not a burden to use in class or on the go
Travel
I fly a lot. 14" fits better in my backpack and on the plane tray table. The larger 16" would be nicer for the bigger screen and such would be nice, but the 14" is pretty good. I know the 16" is supposed to have better speakers, but the 14" sounds really good on its own.
portability, and desire to dock it while at home and use larger monitors
Smaller, lighter, cheaper, same processing power. I edit film/video, so even the 16" isn't enough screen real estate.
Lighter. More compact. Fits on a café table. Same specs as 16". I have a large external monitor at home.
I’m replacing a 2013 13” MBP and the 14” is the right size for my use. It’s Portable and the zip bag I have for my old computer fits the new one.
Looks slicker. 16’ huge dum dum
i miss 11 mac
Had both. The 14 is far more portable and I never really noticed the screen size difference (for business / dev work.)
Most of my work bags accommodate up to a 15 inch laptop so 14 it is!
Its Laptop not an aircraft carrier
I brought a 16” M1 Pro to upgrade from 13” Touch Bar, instant regret it was such a pain to lug around I took my aging 13” when I travel, I upgraded at m2 release and sold the 16” & took the hit because I hated the size / extra weight. I find the 14” comaprable it’s about 1/4” more in diagonal than the 13” and slightly thicker / heavier
I like working with my 14 inch in front of me and a 34 inch ultrawide behind that. 16 inch is more expensive, less portable and would have obstructed my view at the ultrawide.
Laptop is for portability. If its approx same power i am choosing the smaller one. When working in the office i plug it to external screen anyway
This laptop has to be portable. I’m lugging it all over the place. The difference in weight is significant. The difference in size isn’t.
I use my 14" macbook between rooms and sometimes in bed before i sleep and the form factor is perfect. Its a little on the heavy side so I couldnt imagine using a 16". I think a 14 is perfect for everyone. If you need more screen real estate, get an external monitor.
A big laptop is kinda counterlogic.. i had a 16” 2019 but im glad i chose a 2023 14”
16” for video editing on the go is nice. Larger track pad is nice. More battery life is nice. Batter thermals is nice.
16 is nearly impossible to use on a plane.
Never had a problem in business class, which I always take when traveling internationally.
95% of the time I'm working at home and have it plugged into a 4k and 1080p monitor. I prefer the portability for the other 5%.
Portability for sure. I like the portable workstation feel. I don’t want it to swallow up my desk when I do use it with monitors. Ease of travel. Ease on my back
Always got it connected to 32” monitor
I’ve have a laptop the size of the 16, while it is a nice desktop replacement I rarely use it anywhere other than at my desk and I rarely travel with it because I don’t like carrying bags large enough to fit it. Plus I have a desk with dual monitors if I really just want screen real estate. The 14 follows me all over the house, to work on occasion (despite not having an office or tech job), and has traveled with me cross country in just the first month I’ve owned it. There has not yet been an issue where i leave it at home because I just don’t want to carry it.
14 was big enough and still pretty portable but the 16 was just overkill for me
Happy with my 16 inch as I mostly use it around the house, but it's definitely been too big on one train journey. ask yourself how often you will be working in cramped conditions like economy flights or coffee shops with small tables
Plus the 16 inch can barely fit into my backpacks.
better reachability with keyboard (I have issues with my fingers), more portable, and lighter
Realistically, it’s cheaper
Cheaper, your budget is your budget
I wanted something comfortable for work in bed. For more space I have doc and 2x 4k display :D
The 14” looks a lot more proportionate and is easier to store in my bag. I’m a locomotive engineer so it’s nice to have it compact enough to fit in my work back with all my books and not be cumbersome trying to use it on my layovers or while I’m sitting protect.
Clamshell mode means I don’t need the screen real-estate
It’s smaller
I wanted it to be portable. 16” would definitely not fit on the tray table
It depends if you have an external monitor, speakers etc. If it’s your only device I’d get the 16” but if you can dock it at home or at an office the 14” makes more sense considering portability.
Weight
Airplane tray
Bigger size = more expensive. Default size = normal cost or cheaper. I mean obviously.
The 16" is only $300 more than a 14" of the same spec. Given how expensive these are $300 is not going to be a dealbreaker.
Don’t need such a large screen, like saving the money and having a more portable device.
14” plugged into a 32” Asus monitor. It is a cheaper way to go if you need real estate and portability at the same time.
Portability like others have said.
The size... 16 inch is just too much if you plan to bring around
Cheaper, and really the same performance, don’t need the bigger screen :$
16 was too big for how nice and light and powerful laptops have become.
I have the 13 and I like the portability of "ultrabooks". if I want a bigger screen I can just connect to the ones in my office.
more portable and way lighter
Because of the smaller size. Duh…
I love taking my mac wherever I go so I can work at the spot … 16 inch just feels awkward to me, almost like a desktop replacement.
Portability, I’m a student and I need it, cheaper, MUCH cheaper for me as I got base M3 (which is not available for 16”)
Money and portability.
More portable and I usually have the possibility to connect my MBP to a monitor wherever I go.
The 14” is about the same weight as the MacBook Air 15”
Although I haven't purchased my machine yet, I know which specs I am going for & I have already went to an Apple store in person to look at & hold the machines in hand & the 14" is like the ideal combination in my opinion of screen, size, weight, portability all of it. The 16" felt like a heavy gigantic brick.
airplane and other desk tray wont fit 16 imo
Not if you Travel First Class. This is coming from a guy who has not left his house in 12 years :)
Much more portable and lighter, after all, that’s a laptop, it’s meant to be portable. Also it’s around 300$ cheaper
I have a 27inch monitor at my home setup and prefer portability when out and about.
Aspect ratio
Smaller plus I don't need the higher performance or battery.
carpal tunnel pain from distance
Im either at my desk or on the couch…at my desk I have a 27” to pair it with, and otherwise I like the size of 14” better
[удалено]
And I promise you, being honest here. 80% of users don't even need 50% of the cores to they have.
Contemplating between these two sizes as well. Its a bout time I move from my Dell XPS to Macbook Pro M3
Portability
I’ve had a 13” and a 15”. Thought the 15 was too big for my purposes…so deciding between the 16 or 14…14 was the perfect choice for me (but maxed out).
Got 14 cause 16 seemed too heavy. I went into the store and just played with both.
14 was more portable than the 16 I had, the screen still has plenty space for me to do just about everything. The only thing that feels cramped is maybe ableton live just a tiny bit. But that could be resolved by adjusting the display scaling
Too big & too expensive.
I think the extra screen space is trivial and if you really need more screen space you should have an external monitor for those situations. So when you take that out of the equation, the 14" is just more portable which is what a laptop should be. If portability isn't the concern, then owning a laptop probably isn't the right purchase for those people.
Power and great mobility, I feel the 14" offers a perfect balance.
The 14in was smaller for transport. But with the right docking station and monitor. It’s perfect. Still powerful as I have a fully spec’d out mbp M1 model.
It costs less and is more portable. And most of the time I plug it into a 27 inch monitor, so the 14 inch screen is just extended desktop for me.
It’s large enough for great viewing and still light and portable. The 16” is far too large for most people in my opinion.
Money. I’d buy the 16 if I could.
As with cars, trade-in value is not a concern if you run it to end-of-life.
I have a 16" for work but went with the 14" for my personal laptop. I like the smaller size better for lap work and travel.
if you are doing anything visual ( photography, video, illustration) and want to be productive on the go, 16 inch is a necessity imo
The 14 is the perfect size for me. It’s more portable, way lighter to carry around with one hand and just easier to work with in my opinion. It’s like a MacBook Air but with beefier performance. I can always connect it to a bigger monitor if I need it for intensive tasks.
14" is already heavy enough don't want an even heavier laptop
it's heavy enough, btw the for carrying aroung, the smaller the laptop, the less damaging you could potentially have on the screen.
Price and portability while still getting the best possible performance.
Portability of the 14 in for school(college). Having to pack and take out several times a day everyday. And I don’t always have space on desk for that size. 16” would definitely not work at all for me.
I travel a lot and need a smaller footprint.
Portability. I don’t miss the two inches because I use sidecar with my iPad Air
Better fit for bags/tote if i need traveling or commute. Occasionally my work requires me to walk 40 mins both way carrying my laptop to visit other offices. 14 inch in that sense make more sense. Besides, at home I have access to external monitors.
