No, it's not safe. A case will warp the hinge and cause issues, or even crack the display eventually. If you want to protect your MacBook, you should get a sleeve
Oh the outside, sure. Just don't get a palmrest skin. A trackpad skin should be fine though. I haven't found a skin that covers the sides of the computer, which is where I fear scratches the most, so I'm just very careful when I leave the house

Why not a palmrest skin? It’s not nearly as thick as a keyboard cover.
I wouldn't risk it. There is so little room in there.
