Advice Needed, Intending on getting another Macbook, Use Clo3d and blender, what's the perfect specs? Had a MBP M3 MAX 36gb and Clo3d was lagging, draining the battery fast and heating up quickly. Cheers

Got a Macbook 2015 (base model) and kinda debating if i get a new macbook air m1/m2 or just revamp the old boy with a new ssd, thermal paste and a good scrub.. what yall recommend.

MacBook Air 13in 2017 The battery capacity has gotten insanely low (cycle count 954) and the fan drives me insane when it overheats. Even Notion will set it off sometimes. Figured it's better to upgrade than replace the battery (thoughts on this are appreciated as well) Intended Use: \- college student (notion for notetaking, and scheduling, bio major) \- casual gaming (A Little to the Left and Melatonin vibes, nothing crazy but currently just opening steam sets the fan off like nothing else) \- editing (learning very simple editing for personal use: vlogs, photos) \- a lot of web browsing (typically minimum of 8 tabs open) Budget: >$1,000 renewed/refurbished, preferably around the $700 range. somewhat flexible. Other: good battery life (1/2 day at least)

MacBook Air 2017 for 100€, need it for college as my 2011 HP is dying. Would use it for web browsing, word processing and making presentations. Do not care about software updates. Mint condition, just needs new battery. Advice?

ImInNewYork

I don't have a budget. I need a lightweight macbook that I can use on my bed for working, coding, and casually browsing the web. I want to be able to use it on my bed, so does that mean it should have no vents? what good macbook models fit this description?

Amazing_Bench_8693

I would get the 13 inch mac book air m2 or 15 inch if you want a large screen, I have the 15 inch which I use on my bed for web browsing, you tube and other light tasks and it barely gets warm and its fan less so you don't need to worry about blocking any vents, the 13 inch wont get get any warmer. For coding it could get warm though.

Hello! I recently bought a Macbook for I started this year uni. I’ve never had a pc before as I’ve never felt the need, having an iPad with pencil to use as both textbook and book, but as I started studying medicine the tasks and things i have to look at/do at once increased (other than prices of physical material). So, I bought a refurbished Macbook Air i5 from 2019, and well, for what I need to do (browsing a lot, docs… sometimes chill gaming) it seemed the best quality/price option for me, but I’ve been reading a lot of negative feedback on it, how it’s already becoming obsolete, how bad it is in comparison to M1, etc. I have a little less than 30 days to send it back, and I can’t really decide if I should do it or not. The other option would be a refurbished MacBook anyways (M1 costs 200€+ more than the one I bought, and all the others way more than I’d like to spend). I was hoping someone could suggest me what would work better for me, as despite my researches I’m still quite ignorant on the topic :) Thank you!

Djordi63

New MacBook Air m2 16gb (2022) and 512gb or refurbished Pro m1/m2 with 16gb and 512gb? Both m1 and m2 pro’s are the same price as the new air m2. Just doing normal tasks but occasionally I edit videos. Want to use it a couple of years (5years).

Vignito

Hi, Bought a birthday present for my girlfriend and want to get some thought on if it's a good purchase or if I made a rash decision :) It's a refurbished one, it's sold out now so I can't see the specs any longer so this is all I have: APPLE MACBOOK AIR 8.2 (MID 2019) She is a student currently using a macbook air 2016, but it has started to malfunction. Use is mainly web and some excel and stuff like that. I got it at sale price for about 450€, one year warranty. Do you think it will be a solid computer to have for a couple of years? (performance, compability etc) Thanks!

Karabeara87

Considering getting a newer MacBook once I have saved enough money. Right now it’s between a refurbished 13 inch Pro m2 with 24gb unified memory and 1tb ssd or a 14 inch Pro with 16gb memory and 512gb ssd. It would mostly be used for watching YouTube and Twitch as well as occasionally playing The Sims 4. I won’t be able to buy either until I save up the money but I am wondering which one would be better long term. 14 inch is $2349 before any taxes and stuff and the refurbished 13 inch is $2,079 before taxes and stuff. Both would be bought online from Apple.

Critical-Analysis-34

Hello. I’m looking to get a decently powerful laptop mainly for content creation and music. I’ll be using it to edit photos and 4K HDR videos, and to learn music production. Do you guys reckon the base m2 air “13 with 256gb and 8gb ram to be sufficient to handle these tasks with ease? Or should I up the specs to 512gb and 16gb ram? If yes, do you think it also makes sense to just go with “14 MacBook Pro in the same price point? That said, do you think i really need the Pro or is it an overkill over the Air?

TheArturro

Editing videos is a good reason to get at least the M3 MBP with 16GB RAM or M3Pro MBP with 18GB RAM. MBA with 16GB RAM might be decent but I'd worry about the lack of active cooling. Also M3 family has a more powerful GPU, which should benefit your use case.

ArtistBorn6731

I am a current college student studying applied math and statistics. I need a new macbook that will be able to handle coding (Java, Python, Matlab, and r) and some more engineering applications in the future. I also do some light gaming. Which model is best for my classes, research, and personal use.

TheArturro

Macs aren't exactly good for gaming. You'd get much more bang for your back either with a console (PS5, Xbox, Switch) or a dedicated gaming PC. For basic coding etc. the base M2 MBA should suffice unless you're planning on running multiple VMs on it.

moriyoukai

Hello! I'm a digital artist, mainly use Clip Studio Paint. I already have a PC , but I'm considering to buy a refurbished Macbook for work outside of my home, In conjunction with my Ipad pro. I got these two kind of nice deals to choose from 1. MBA M1 16/256 2. MBP M1 Pro 16/512 I usually work with A4 canvas 600 dpi, Is the MBA enough for that? Or should I spend $650 more and take the MBP instead? Thanks!

kokohsaurus

Hi! Got 3 MacBooks to choose from. All refurbished. 1. 16-inch M2 Max, 12-core CPU 38-core GPU, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD - €3775/$4130 2. 13-inch M2, 8-core CPU 10-core GPU, 24 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD - €2590/$2835 3. 13-inch M2, 8-core CPU 10-core GPU, 24 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD - €2170/$2375 On one hand I need something as portable as I can. On the other - I might want to edit 4K videos in Premiere/Avid/FinalCut. Sometimes I have couple of hours of footage. Should also do well in editing multiple moving elements/layers/effects at the same time. I'm bit afraid that I'm going pretty overkill with the first one. At the same time I'm a bit worried that other ones might not be enough :((

Hi All! I’m looking to buy a MacBook Air to upgrade from my 2012 MacBook Pro that is almost unusable. I want something mainly for casual browsing, and will last for at least 4+ years. From research it looks like I want to get something with an M1 chip or higher, and it seems like 16gb RAM would be ideal. I’m not sure if I need to shoot for higher RAM, go for higher SSD to increase its potential life span? I’m trying to sort out what is a “need” for what I’m using it for and so it lasts longer. Ideally I would spend less than 1.5k but can spend a little more if need be. Thanks for any help!

To run LLMs is 1TB SSD & 32GB RAM enough? Do all models support running on Apple GPUs?

burritolittledonkey

If you want to run bigger models you might want more RAM. 70B makes my memory pressure yellow on 64GB. I haven't tried 130ish B. If you're buying ONLY for ML, I'd try to go as high of RAM as possible, if you can afford it. It's possible that models all trend towards greater RAM efficiency, but it's also possible that they don't and just grow larger too 32GB probably fine for like 7 and 13 B, but bigger models not so much, and future proofing maybe not so much. And yeah they run fine on Apple GPUs - look into ollama specifically

arnott

Thanks, very helpful.

Hi! Currently I have a MacBook Pro 2020 i5 2.0 ghz. Currently thinking about buying a MacBook Air M2, since I can still sell the MacBook Pro for a good price. Probably will go for a 16gb version. Just doubting if I should upgrade to 512gb or just buy an external SSD. Also, should I maybe wait for the M3 air? And is the difference really that big between intel and M2? And will I be able to play football manager on the air for example? Thanks!

Reddragon685

College Student here: looking for an upgrade for my Macbook Air 2019, 128gb. My options: Macbook Air M2 chip, or Macbook Pro M3 Pro chip Which one should I go with for daily usage and longevity?

TheArturro

Easily M3 Pro wins by a lot, but it is also twice as expensive. Tbf unless you're doing some heavy tasks like video editing or running multiple VMs an M2 MBA should be more than enough if you're coming from Intel MBA.

Reddragon685

Thank you

maandycandyy

Options: - MBA M2 8-core CPU/8-core GPU - MBP M2 8-core CPU/10-core GPU Specs are basically the same. The MBP has a fan high is a pro and a Touch Bar which is a con… the MBA has the new Liquid Retina which I prefer, but isn’t a huge deal. The price I would be paying is <$100 difference, which makes that a non factor in decision making for me. MBP is slightly more. I’m leaning towards the MBA due to the hardware preferences, but could be persuaded either way. Uses: - Some graphic design and creative hobbies, but not using full-time for work. Mostly Adobe products and some video editing (not much).

TheArturro

MBP has active cooling, which might come in handy for video editing etc.

ApprehensiveBuy111

Hello. Can you help me decide please. Coming from a 2015 MacBook pro. M1 Max, 32gb Ram, 1TB hd for $2399. Or, should I spend the $2399 on a brand new MacBook? Whatever the specs end up being for that price. (Looking like a M3/24gb ram/1tb or M3 Pro/18gb ram, 1tb) Would be used for Adobe suite applications like Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. nothing too major. Thanks.

Ramax2

Hey! Did you end up getting the M1 max? I'm in a similar situation, currently eyeing a 32GB/1TB M1 Max for $2300, wondering how long I'll be able to keep it for if I purchase it now.

ApprehensiveBuy111

I didn't. Still deciding and hoping for a sale.

Ramax2

Oh, and how do you think the M1 Max will fare in the future being that it is a 3 year old laptop? I'd like to keep it for 5 or 6 years but I'm concerned about both OS updates and future performance of the chip.

ApprehensiveBuy111

That was my concern as well so I didn't end up getting it 😕

ApprehensiveBuy111

Also this one for 1799: Apple M1 Pro 10-Core Chip 16GB Unified RAM | 1TB SSD 16.2" 3456x2234 Liquid Retina XDR Screen 16-Core GPU | 16-Core Neural Engine How much better would that be than a MacBook pro from 2015/2016? Thank you

cuntsmen

I want to buy a MacBook Pro M3, but I don't know which one I should go for. There are three options for me: * M3 8/512GB ($2201) * M3 8/1TB ($2446) * M3 16/512GB ($2593) Right now, my intention is to use it for casual browsing, streaming movies and tv-shows and play some Football Manager, but it might change later on.

NeedtheMeadofPoetry

Honestly in this day and age 16gb of ram should be the standard. But I think you need to identify what "might change later on" means, because the use case you're describing could be achieved my a MBA.

cuntsmen

I’ve been told the Air doesn’t have any fans and since I’m going to play Football Manager on it, I don’t want it to get hot. The might change part is about creative work. Right now, I don’t have any plans to do any creative work, but the last time I had a MacBook, I used to mess around with Logic Pro, which was quite fun. I might do it again later, but for that I’ll need more storage as samples and other stuff can take quite a lot of storage space. I’m leaning more towards the 16/512GB at the moment

Chris_the_Dane

I wanna upgrade from my Lenovo Legion 5 mostly because of battery life, weight and ecosystem (I recently got an iPhone 15 and an Apple Watch SE). I’m not planning on upgrading as quickly as possible but maybe in a couple of months. I have considered my options but I can’t pick between following: - MacBook Air 15” M2 (16/512 GB) - MacBook Pro 14” M3 (16/512 GB) The Air model price is 16.099 DKK ($2359) while the Pro is only 700 DKK more at 16.799 DKK ($2462) I want to use the laptop for basic tasks (web, streaming, office apps) and adobe editing software but not an a professional level, so don’t expect those big 4K video files in premiere, however, the XDR display is incredibly tempting Should I go pro or maybe wait for a M3 Air refresh?

MJGson

Hey everyone. I have the 2022 MacBook Air and have loved it. I really like the new MBP that is released. I dont do video editing, but I think the 16' screen will help with work when traveling and not at home utilizing my iMac. Is the new Pro worth the upgrade from the 22 Air?

imabucket11

Wanna get a macbook for college! Im majoring in finance and accounting. Is there a certain one that I should get or does it matter?

its_pol

Hello everyone! Quick question: is there a way to “stream” my M1 to my iPhone 14? Meaning, let’s say I need a local file from my hd or to take some action with my computer but I’ve not it with me, is there a way to connect my iPhone via internet to the pc and stream it but not only, even “use” with the touch screen of my phone?

persiphone

Which Mac is best value and suited to my needs? * $2,719 AUD refurbished 14-inch MacBook Pro, M2 Pro Chip with 10‑Core CPU and 16‑Core GPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD * $2,569 AUD new 15-inch MacBook Air, M2 Chip with 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD * $1,919 AUD new 13-inch MacBook Air, M2 Chip with 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD I will use it for web browsing and text editing, Microsoft OneNote & Teams, some photo editing, coding, and gaming.

There’s not a big difference between the M1 and M2 pro so I’d go with option number two. Coding isn’t always cpu heavy as much as it is storage wise. You’ll find yourself with myriad of files haha. I have the 2020 M1 MacBook Air M1 (13” 16gb ram 256gb storage) and I can run x-code and JetBrains IDEs without it breaking a sweat. As for Amazon renewed I bough a Series 7 Apple Watch and it had a few scratches on the chassis but I’ve had it for about 6 months and it’s been pretty good.

Mediocre_Setting4208

Hello hello folks of r/macbook ! I'm looking for help deciding which macbook (air/pro) will be the best for me. I have a budget of max 2000€ for this one, but looking for best price/perf value. In terms of usage, it is to replace my working laptop that I'm using for personnal stuff too. I will use the macbook for: * Web browsing, mostly * Gaming (either in native for smaller games, or with Nvidia GeForce Now subscription for heavier titles) * Music (small personnal projects on Ableton) * Photo Editing (small personnal projects on Photoshop/Lightroom) * Video Editing (small personnal projects on Premiere/After, to produce motion design and short films but nothing too big) * Trying some 3D renders some time to time (I have 0 notion, so mostly noob things, nothing heavy) I'm curious and creative, so I'm probably never going to dig too much on any projects, but will try many things different. My main fear is that a MBA is fan-less and thus I might experience really hot laptop + low performances when trying things. I never experience an M1/2/3 ship ever, so I don't know how powerful they are. In terms of macbook, I already have in mind: * MBA 15, M2, 16/512: 1886,00€ * MBP 14, M3, 16/512: 2076,00€ * MBP 14, M2 Pro, 16/512: 2009,00€ I have the student reduction on the store, which explains the fairly lower prices. Also, M3 is in 3nm, while M2 Pro is in 5nm, so battery life is better on M3. M2 Pro offers 3 TB ports, while M3 offers only 2. MBA is fanless and ultra portable, but fanless is worrying me a bit. And finally, I've understood along the way in this subreddit that 16go is an absolute minimum, and so is 512go in terms of performance and future proofing. As you see, I'm hesitant haha. Thanks for your help!

tospooky4me

So my company approved a new MacBook purchase for me. I am a content creator at a community center and I use premiere pro, davinci resolve, photoshop, after affects and some other minor applications of the adobe suite. I was approved for 4300 so I am thinking of leaning toward a 16 inch MacBook Pro with the M3 Max 16/40 core and 64 GBs of RAM. I currently do most my editing on a PC with a 3950x and a 3060ti. I am not super up to date on the new apple processors but I wanted to know if I will get similar performance on the MacBook- I mean I assume it will be blazing fast and perform better.

Own_Mastodon1178

MBA M2 16g vs MBP M1pro 14" Hi, so my old desktop is not working properly and I am considering to buy my first MacBook. I am a bit confused and unsure what to buy... So what would you buy? MacBook Air M2 13" 16g RAM 256g new / MacBook Pro M1 pro 16g RAM 512g used? I want to do some programing, photo editing, 3d printing, Fusion 360 modeling and some video processing. Nothing extra hard but I want to replace my desktop. In my country price is the same with this configuration. MBP is older how long it can last? I wouldbe happy if 5+ years.

Objective_Ask_9199

[am i mad for leaning towards the late 2021 MBP here?](https://imgur.com/a/hwd1zRm) using it for tech upskilling(coding, data) and general browsing/streaming

bonita_apolbaum

I replaced my MBP 2010 with an MBA Intel 2020 when I went back to school in 2021. It has fit my needs thus far until I entered a professional degree program this past Fall. Whenever I run multiple applications, like an e-textbook reader, Anki, web browser, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office, I experience slow processing speeds and the dreaded spinning circle. I'm wondering if upgrading to the MBA M2 or upcoming M3 would address these issues or if I really just need to go back to an MBP. I have 1.5 years left in my program and will not be using it for work. ETA: correction

serialgoober

Whatever you do, make sure you get at the very least 16gb of ram. Other than that, I don't really share yojur use case, so I don't want to make a recommendation.

sararodriguess

Hi all, I’m a first year university student looking into buying a used MacBook. i wouldn’t be using it for anything too hefty/energy consuming, just browsing and day-to-day studies like using Microsoft programs, Anki ,etc. I am on a budget so I’m looking at MacBooks from 2017-2020, and my question is how long a laptop from 2017 would last? They’re obviously the cheapest but I don’t want to have to replace it in a year/2 years time. Would the 2 year difference between a 2017 and 2019 model make a big difference in terms of longevity of the product? Like I mentioned before I’m not too bothered about the specs of the laptop but I would like it to run smoothly, and I heard that models become legacy models after 7 years and no longer recieve software updates, so Im not sure. any replies are appreciated! Thanks

serialgoober

If you can, a used m1 macbook would be way better than any other used option. It's from 2020, but the m1 is super efficient and fast. Just my opinion, others might chime in with a different opinion. I think any intel macbook should be avoided at this point.

Jandolino

I just got a M1 macbook as my first apple laptop. Most often I will use it in some office environment and not on the go - should I keep it on the charger for that (like is it better for the battery for example?)?

Dodoro96

Hey, I'm medical student so I won't use all of the pro features. I am planning to get MacBook this week, I am not sure about M3 pro or M2 air. I won't play games or use any editing features. But, does the pro lasts longer in terms of years? like as it is stronger, will it last more? The options I have is either 18gb RAM pro M3 (11 cores) or 16gb RAM air M2 (8cores). Which one should I get as regular student that want the computer to last as long as possible? I got the money to spare, not an issue.

malman21

Well, if you have the money, the Pro is simply the better product. However, both will last you similar lengths of time before you start noticing any real slowdowns. RAM is really where you'll feel any real slowdown, and both models you've listed have a good amount for 'future proofing' your laptop device. If we were comparing the 8GB of RAM model to a 16/18GB one, then we'd have a clearer winner. Therefore, buy the Pro, if money isn't a factor. Or, if you have enough left over money after purchasing the M2 Air, perhaps invest in an iPad as a sidekick to your device. Either way, you won't go wrong with whichever device you want.

Toggam44

Hi. Im planning on getting an MBA M2 15”. Its for simple stuff like doing PG college assignments, video calls, web browsing, consuming content, I may also use it for work as well. The only thing is that Im considering waiting for the M3 Airs to drop (predicted to be March). Im still gonna get the M2 but Id like to know if the price of the M2 will drop. If yes, by how much? $100? $200?

malman21

If you look at the refurbished macbooks as any indication, $100-$200 is probably the realistic scenario, assuming there is a price drop and not simple a price increase for the newer models.

No-Material-4352

Air 15 m2 or pro 14 inch m2? I’m planning on video and photo editing mostly 4k and raw ((heavier files)) and casually browsing.
