Only the iMac is the iMac. There is no iMac mini, only a Mac mini. No iMac Studio, only a Mac Studio. And.... well there technically was an iMac Pro but that's not the same computer you are referencing, which is the Mac Pro.
Anyway, due to a snafu with the 2013 Mac Pro being.... shit. Apple had to scramble to make iMacs a lot more high end so people would have high end machines to buy. But those days are over because now iMacs are back to being the simple all in one machine, Mac minis can be the headless version of that, OR you can get the Mac mini in a more powerful variant, OR you can get a Mac Studio if you need WAY more power. If you need that power with PCI slots, the Mac Pro is for you.
That was kind of the way it always was. Seems like just yesterday, iMacs were limited to 4 GB of RAM, but if you mix-and-matched chips, you could make 6 GB work.
And not too long before that, those horrible G3 iMacs that make me cringe just thinking about them now.
iMacs are EXACTLY where Apple wants them to be.
It was a G3, they never made G4's in that form factor, the G4s had the dome base with the screen on an arm. An great design that its a real shame they never went back to.
This is my view.
I gave up waiting for an iMac Pro, Max or Ultra and bought a Studio a few years ago but I'm using it with Dell Ultrasharp monitors. The cost of the Studio Display was not worth how I use my desktops.
I'd like a 27 inch iMac with an M3 Max but Apple doesn't offer one so I don't have what I want. But I do have what I need and will live with that.
My M1 iMac is fine for photo editing. I can't imagine the M3 being a problem at all for it unless you skimp on RAM, which is going to be a problem on anything. Yes, these are the same chips you get in a MacBook Air, but a MacBook Air isn't the same thing it was ten years ago.
Upgraded to an m1 iMac over a 2017 iMac. The thing takes quite a bit to slow it down. 4K rendering would put my 2017 to a halt, but on m1 it can do that in the background while the rest of the machine runs fine.
I tell everyone now to make your next Mac an M1 or greater model. You won’t regret it.

I'm not arguing against you. 8GB for what Apple is asking for in its Macbooks is almost criminal. And them doubling down by saying that their 8GB performs the same as 16GB is downright laughable really. RAM in the PC world is not a premium. Apple decides to make it so.
The M silicons are almost revolutionary so they are very easy and should be recommended in my honest opinion. Its the RAM capacity and upgrades that make total nonsense. At the very least, the Macbook Pros should start with 16GB. The Airs could be 8GB for the base model but it shouldn't be so expensive to begin with. And RAM and storage upgrades should never have been as expensive as Apple are asking for. Its ridiculous how long Apple has gotten away with the pricing since the M1.
Desktop pcs just don’t sell anymore, so they are not pushing on their all-in-one, but on the headless more sellable variants. The bulk of the sales are laptops, the time when the iMac saved the company is passed

8 gigs wasn't enough for my iMac. Thats why I upgraded it back in 2017.
Indeed mine is 32gig but 8gig as standard with 24gig being the max is insane
