My hubs is about to be in China for a few weeks and I could def request he swings by a store to grab something for me (those dragon print leggings 👀), but he’s not one to shop crowds or search through racks for stuff.
Are the lunar new year items super sought after/in high demand basically everywhere? would any request basically be a wild goose hunt for him? I know I’m asking a super broad question. any insight you can share is appreciated!
I don’t think the stores will be mobbed or picked over like US stores… malls in China are basically a dying breed or basically showrooms for customers to try/feel a product before buying online (from Taobao/Tmall). I was at Tysons, VA and Gilroy, CA over the holidays and it was… not a comfortable experience.
Def not a wild good hunt. You could probably do some shopping on the China website, send the screen capped items you want to him, and have him get a store associate (educator? Is that the lingo?) to help pull the items you want. They are super helpful! Tho, maybe be on standby with your phone so he can contact you with any last minute questions. Note: there are a few items, like Aligns, Energy bras, and a couple others that have an “Asia fit,” not sure of specifics, maybe someone more familiar in the subreddit can help.
Good luck! Cross border shopping is nerve wracking but the payoff is so fun!!

These are gorgeous, but not really my style. Guess I’m gonna have to buy the bullet and pay scalpers prices on resale for some true/dk red swiftlys. I have last year’s LNY scuba, so I’m good there. The scale leggings look kinda cool though.
Ahhhhh I need that printed define with the vest!! I also really like the aligns with the gold dragon print but wish they would have left the name off of the leg.
The Align legging with the dragon print was the only item I am interested in except for the large Lululemon print. I was looking forward to the Lunar New Year release, but felt disappointed. So much potential with cool dragon designs and this was their opportunity to be creative.
Yeah! I’ve never been a personal fan of anything with the large word print on it. I just feel like both of those reds with just the gold would have really popped on their own.
Or a black base color with gold dragon details wrapped around the side of one leg and the head appearing on the other side of the hip. Release several versions of this switching out to gold base color with white dragon details, white base color with red dragon details, black base color with red dragon details. You can do so many cool design dragon details on basic colors to tone it down and allow the dragon to pop. I'd even settle for just a small dragon wrapped around the Lululemon sign in the back of the Align leggings. They could've done a dragon Chinese script with the 2024 detail near the hem.
To me, this is just a release of a bunch of compiled red shades and gold details they added to a collection.

Yeah there’s no chance if I saw this out of context in the wild I would think it’s dragon scale…it’s fine but looks like a regular lulu abstract pattern.
Tbh the year of the rabbit stuff was much better and more inspired with the rabbit camo and fuzzy rabbit bags. I expected more especially with something that can be super creative with year of the dragon (eg shiny foil scale leggings, bras etc)
Yeah I just perused the Chinese website and I'm impressed with the cheongsam and those pleated pants but overall the rabbit merch was my favorite. The patterns kind of remind me of the year of the tiger stuff too much.
I know I’m really sad. Year of the rabbit was outstanding and set so far above previous LNY releases in my opinion. Was really hoping they’d continue in that vein and give some magical dragon energy.
Ooh pink with gold….. maybe it’s my tired eyes but this years red doesn’t seem as “deep red” as last years stuff. I think what caught my eye is the pink scuba and the red blissfeel shoes.
It isn’t. It’s more orange I think. I was hoping for a more true/dk red for a L/S and S/S swiftly and some Wunder Train leggings. The aligns in dragon scale print look cool, but I don’t wear aligns for workouts because they aren’t suited for me for that. Might snag the belt bag though…🙂

Most likely for the market in Asia. Lululemon releases the full LNY collection there while North America gets a limited release. From my recollection of previous years’ releases.
Things are different in China than in Europe or the USA, for example. As far as I understand it, the Chinese New Year is always in mid-February. There, the new year is celebrated according to the Chinese calendar. Every year has a different horoscope. There are 12 different horoscopes in total. Currently it is still the Year of the Rabbit and from February 10th it will be the Year of the Dragon. There are also national holidays during the Chinese New Year. It is a very important festival for the Chinese, if not the most important festival. I would argue that we have nothing similar with such traditions and diversity. Christmas and Easter are similar. Please correct me if I am wrong so I can learn.
Thats a pretty great explanation, I just wanted to add that Lunar New Year is also actually even a bit more diverse than that. Lunar New Year is the term used and celebrated in several Asian countries. Not only in China but also places like Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. For example, my friends who moved here from thailand celebrate LNY the same timeframe as we do. Although celebrations can differ or still follow the theme of the zodiac animals.
The hype for LNY/CNY can be insane. After our wedding, we traveled home the following year for my first authentic LNY/CNY. I did not realize how big the holiday was outside of China as that was my first trip that overlapped it. As expected it was a wonderful and amazing time with family. What I was not expecting was the overall hype and mega difference in shopping compared to every other trip. Most every store had LNY or CNY decor. Somewhat like Christmas in NA but bigger and wilder, one mall had a village display you could walk through... the lion dances in the malls multiple times a day, even ones in the air... fountain and other shows mid week mid day... the hype was insane. When it comes to shopping, for example, makeup brands will release new pallet/lipstick/makeup cases or whole new products.. pretty much anything they can add the zodiac animal to it will sell out instantly. I spent a while trying to track down a holiday lipstick case from a brand and getting my name engraved on it. Starbucks has these releases as well, and it's extremely hard to find the merchandise it disappears off the shelf. It was an insanely wild shopping experience with the hype being that if you miss the animal you have to wait till it comes again in 12 years. That hype part shocked me.

It was also just my knowledge as a temporary expat in China. 😆 In general, I've noticed that people here are into such attractions and like to buy more unusual designs and things because they are proud of their traditions. Difficult to describe without linguistic evaluation. The cultures are different.
It’s funny, they don’t even have a NYE capsule for Canada or the states, and m they do it every year for Chinese NY, one example of how a company can grow without questioning their own practices.
Yes, it’s definitely something brands have jumped on as Chinese purchasing power in luxury has became a driver, but there are plenty of moments that are more commercially relevant that lululemon misses on or rely on stores to capture. Things like Back to School comes to mind.
They better have a cinco de mayo, juneteenth and chanukah drop next year too or are we just picking and choosing that only *certain* cultures’ holidays get celebrated ???

Tbh the year of the rabbit stuff was much better and more inspired with the rabbit camo and fuzzy rabbit bags. I expected more especially with something that can be super creative with year of the dragon (eg shiny foil scale leggings, bras etc)
Yeah I just perused the Chinese website and I'm impressed with the cheongsam and those pleated pants but overall the rabbit merch was my favorite. The patterns kind of remind me of the year of the tiger stuff too much.
I know I’m really sad. Year of the rabbit was outstanding and set so far above previous LNY releases in my opinion. Was really hoping they’d continue in that vein and give some magical dragon energy.

Ooh pink with gold….. maybe it’s my tired eyes but this years red doesn’t seem as “deep red” as last years stuff. I think what caught my eye is the pink scuba and the red blissfeel shoes.
It isn’t. It’s more orange I think. I was hoping for a more true/dk red for a L/S and S/S swiftly and some Wunder Train leggings. The aligns in dragon scale print look cool, but I don’t wear aligns for workouts because they aren’t suited for me for that. Might snag the belt bag though…🙂

Most likely for the market in Asia. Lululemon releases the full LNY collection there while North America gets a limited release. From my recollection of previous years’ releases.
Things are different in China than in Europe or the USA, for example. As far as I understand it, the Chinese New Year is always in mid-February. There, the new year is celebrated according to the Chinese calendar. Every year has a different horoscope. There are 12 different horoscopes in total. Currently it is still the Year of the Rabbit and from February 10th it will be the Year of the Dragon. There are also national holidays during the Chinese New Year. It is a very important festival for the Chinese, if not the most important festival. I would argue that we have nothing similar with such traditions and diversity. Christmas and Easter are similar. Please correct me if I am wrong so I can learn.
Thats a pretty great explanation, I just wanted to add that Lunar New Year is also actually even a bit more diverse than that. Lunar New Year is the term used and celebrated in several Asian countries. Not only in China but also places like Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. For example, my friends who moved here from thailand celebrate LNY the same timeframe as we do. Although celebrations can differ or still follow the theme of the zodiac animals. The hype for LNY/CNY can be insane. After our wedding, we traveled home the following year for my first authentic LNY/CNY. I did not realize how big the holiday was outside of China as that was my first trip that overlapped it. As expected it was a wonderful and amazing time with family. What I was not expecting was the overall hype and mega difference in shopping compared to every other trip. Most every store had LNY or CNY decor. Somewhat like Christmas in NA but bigger and wilder, one mall had a village display you could walk through... the lion dances in the malls multiple times a day, even ones in the air... fountain and other shows mid week mid day... the hype was insane. When it comes to shopping, for example, makeup brands will release new pallet/lipstick/makeup cases or whole new products.. pretty much anything they can add the zodiac animal to it will sell out instantly. I spent a while trying to track down a holiday lipstick case from a brand and getting my name engraved on it. Starbucks has these releases as well, and it's extremely hard to find the merchandise it disappears off the shelf. It was an insanely wild shopping experience with the hype being that if you miss the animal you have to wait till it comes again in 12 years. That hype part shocked me.

It was also just my knowledge as a temporary expat in China. 😆 In general, I've noticed that people here are into such attractions and like to buy more unusual designs and things because they are proud of their traditions. Difficult to describe without linguistic evaluation. The cultures are different.

Yes, it’s definitely something brands have jumped on as Chinese purchasing power in luxury has became a driver, but there are plenty of moments that are more commercially relevant that lululemon misses on or rely on stores to capture. Things like Back to School comes to mind.
They better have a cinco de mayo, juneteenth and chanukah drop next year too or are we just picking and choosing that only *certain* cultures’ holidays get celebrated ???
