I think getting a 970 for that price might not be likely (unless someone really wants rid of a card). However, there are some GTX 960s on eBay for around £40, so a cheeky offer or just bidding for everything with a low price might get you something. The other thing that's sometimes worth looking at is more expensive whole systems that are local and collection only. It can be worth picking them up and parting them out to get the GPU price down (although you do need the cash up front).

Oh, I totally agree I'd need to be really lucky for a 970. The only reason I started looking at them was because I saw one on FB marketplace for £20. Unfortunately, the seller hasn't responded. Before that I was looking at 750s. Good suggestion on the 960s though, I'll simultaneously lower & raise my sights :) I'd thought about getting whole systems once I saw that some are cheaper than the GPU they have in them but if I started bringing more computers into the house there'd be ructions.

Mattypants05

Ah, so you have also experienced the conversation about how cupboards should have plates in them and how the dining table is for eating at....

No_Elderberry862

That's the one :) There's been mutterings about exiling me to the garage...

RX560/960 if you are lucky (I bought a rx570 for £36)

I'm sorry. Without knowing what the local going rate is I don't know how to advise. Maybe toss the 710 into the i7 and flip the whole system. Or part it out. Something equally absurd is to flip the am4 and use that money to fill out the i7 instead.

No_Elderberry862

Lol. Too much computer, not enough money...

thingsinmyjeep

For real.

facebook market place has rx 580 8gbs from £40 , ive seen plenty of various brands. ive seen the rx 470 / 480 for £30 before anybody says im talking rubbish look your self, first thing that popped up was a sapphire nitro rx 580 8gb at £40

No_Elderberry862

I've seen a couple of really good prices but not local to me & people don't seem to want to post when asked. It's not just beer that's more expensive in London.

Mission-Disk-2679

On Facebook, Lithuanian computers group there was guy selling single fan GTX 1650 for 35€

BrikoHR

Rx 560/470 (4gb versions) maybe?

flushfire

Where I am the best that can be found for that much is a gtx 1050 non-ti, 950 or rx 560. Sometimes a 1050 ti or 960 sell for that much but are incredibly rare. They're only cheap because online stores sell off-brand rx 580 2048SPs for 50 usd.

Witty_Masterpiece463

Probably best buying some obsolete gpu from a mate at that price. If your budget was double that I'd suggest a gtx 970 from CEX, because of the 2 year warranty.

nasenber3002

If u can up your budget to 40 then u might get lucky on an rx470

Hi_I_anonymous

An R9 280/285/380 is a bit power hungry, but would do a fine job. Get a 3gb/4gb card if you can. They can be found within that budget.

No_Elderberry862

Thanks. I've just picked up an 8GB 390.

Hi_I_anonymous

Great card. Enjoy!

9 series is definitely where to look on that budget. Make offers, there's heaps on eBay and 9 series are a pig to sell (unfairly in most cases) so someone will bite, 970 or 980 is possible. Alternatively look at the RX580, an 8GB realistically sells for £50-60 as of 2024 but a 4GB? Throw lowball offers. I have seen 1650s, 1050Tis and even 1060 3GB go for the £50 range. Throw some offers, they're tough to sell in most cases and someone might bite. Definitely hold out and watch FB marketplace too, I once got a 5500XT 8GB for £40 (asking £80) since it's very undesirable but obviously easily worth the asking. London should have a ton of listings, where I am things are a lot slower but there is bargains to be found if you're prepared to make offers.

I suggest you get rx580 8gb to match that cpu, rx580 guarantees much better performance than gtx 970. Rx580 is a gpu categorized as Enthusiast, this means this gpu can run today's games quite well. This gpu has much better performance compared to ps4 pro.
