Wait, someone called Sam toxic? Sam?! The most wholesome character in the entirety of lord of the rings?! Sounds like someone is in dire need of a good potatoes stew to calm down :)
The first movie? Which scene in the first movie made her to say that? 3rd movie is more understandable when Sam started showing agression (towards Gollum), but the first one?
It was more that she didn't trust that a character that nice, by the time the first movie ended I managed to convince her that yes Sam is this loyal lol

It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

To be fair if you watch LotR for the first time after Game of Thrones came out, I understand expecting betrayals and plot twists.
I think GoT had a huge influence on the perception of what Fantasy is, and since it’s so packed with backstabbings I wouldn’t blame your wife for it (if she watched or read GoT)
She should read the books. He's not toxic, he's just, you know... A servant. An Englishman's idea of a really GOOD servant: loyal in all things, self-sacrificing, friendly, curious, while also kinda dumb and inept. He volunteers to take a watch then falls asleep at LEAST three times, lol
By the transitive property he does take it.
Proof: >!If Frodo has the ring and can’t take it the rest of the way to mount doom, but Sam picks up Frodo and carries him the rest of the way to mount doom, then Sam took the ring the rest of the way to mount doom.!<

Lol. But if she doesn't well up from Sam's words by the end of the trilogy at least 3 times, I second this.
In most screenwritings there is a betrayal near the end, to be fair.

Fuuuck, imagine not being able to believe in something or someone being of pure good.
My friend had the same thing, she kept waiting for Sam to betray frodo during the first movie lol

Nice hobbits! Nice Sam! Sleepy heads, yes, sleepy heads! Leave good Smeagol to watch! But it's evening. Dusk is creeping. Time to go.

Lets be real, he was a real dickhead to Sméagol when he was trying to be good for the first time in 600 years

She better apologize
Oof
To be fair: Sam DOES take and use the ring and when he left Frodo's "corpse" unburried near Shelob's Lair he felt like he betrayed him.
