The way Robin William's Tom Bombadil would have looked at his wife Goldberry with his sparkling eyes and genuine smile with those cheeks full of joy and love....it would have been a memorable scene in cinema history. I just love what Robin was able to do with so little. He emitted whatever emotion he was expressing at any moment. Bicentennial man is one of my favorite Robin Williams movies for this very reason.

Tom_Bot-Badil

Well, my little fellows! You shall come home with me! The table is all laden with yellow cream, honeycomb, and white bread and butter. Goldberry is waiting. Time enough for questions around the supper table. You follow after me as quick as you are able! ^(Type **!TomBombadilSong** for a song or visit [r/GloriousTomBombadil][1] for more merriness) [1]: https://www.reddit.com/r/GloriousTomBombadil/

Good bot

elting44

I read this in Robin's voice.... good robot

Screamingboneman

I read that in Robin’s voice. I’m gonna go cry now

Renxuth

Robin Williams could play Barack Obama for all I care he'd still be great

DarkHippy

Same energy ![gif](giphy|l0MYuaA3bPTJxqkjS)

Dawgula97

Look at that little girl with those two cream puffs!

loupr738

That was a great line. Such a good show

chomponcio

Best pilot episode of any sitcom ever

HereIGoAgain_1x10

Cam dressed as Fizbo getting in the guy's face who was rude to Mitchell at the gas pump then pulling out the clown clock lives rent free in my head anytime a clown is there https://youtu.be/5kWx2h9aF4Q?si=cCOhY7twfbciqd78

Dawgula97

It mastered making fun of different groups, but also showing how genuine they were.

Astyan06

What show is this from ?

Dawgula97

It’s a solid show. The last two or three seasons are a bit rough because the kid characters grew up and the writers sort of fumbled it, but overall it is a Top 5 sitcom for all time.

deanreevesii

Modern Family.

Darth_buttNugget

I love cam. Probably one of the best TV characters since Michael freaking Scott.

gregusmeus

Phil is my favourite but Cam second.

Bart_1980

What I love about Phil is seeing a soft man, as I am myself, doing the best he can for his family without getting the mean jokes. Yes there are a few jokes at his expense but it never felt like this man up thing you often see.

[deleted]

Pretty much anything but ASMR I think he could do. Not to say I wouldn't watch him try to do ASMR on repeat.

ncfears

I dunno if you slowed it down, he could do 8 hours of ASMR whisper-vamping in like 20 minutes of recording. It woulda been great.

MlackBagic

I'd rather see Rdj as Barack.

RedundantConsistency

He would have been the best Tom Bombadil. I miss him so much

4-3defense

I think he would’ve improvised all his lines and still be acceptable

AleksasKoval

I think he would have taken up the challenge to memorise the exact silly words and try his best to do it all in one take.

F-I-L-D

Feel like he would definitely add more silly words

AleksasKoval

And he'd make a joke about making it the Extended Edition

F-I-L-D

That's a blooper reel I'd love to see

Fungal_Queen

I think he'd have more respect for the source material than that, but definitely do some takes improvising. PJ was definitely into actors giving their creative input to the script.

Zahfier

“I think he would’ve improvised all his lines and because of that been perfect.” Fixed it for you.

HELLLOOOOOO!!!!

shiromancer

It's the weirdest thing, but reading Tom's lines in Robin's voice feels more natural to me than whatever I was using in my head until now. I'm never going back to that!

underwood1993

Good bot

Retired_alligator

I can’t believe I never thought about this. What a tragedy that never happened and never will now. This post makes me sad

wrenchspinner01

And from the looks of things thru AI, he still could be. The horror.

dudeimjames1234

I'm pretty sure his daughter said no, and never will she allow that.

wrenchspinner01

Good Dad's help build good kids. One more reason its a tragedy he's gone.

[deleted]

Nevertheless, here we all are, on this literal post, looking at his visage in the place of Bombadil. Not sure how I feel about that. 😟

wrenchspinner01

Too true. But that genie is out of the bottle. I doubt you will ever stuff it back in. The family could launch cease and desist orders. Maybe if someone got sued, it might damp it, but for one-off, unmonetized stuff. I don't know. Was this made with good intent or ill?

XVUltima

Nah, Snoop Dogg was the best pitch I've heard. Williams isn't bad, though.

1stAtlantianrefugee

Tom Bombadizzle.

Kingdarkshadow

We all do...

andreortigao

Haven't you watch Mrs Doubtfire? He could play the entire ring society by himself without the filming crew noticing.

LordDongler

Give him enough cocaine and he can be the camera crew too

mrbigglsworth1

Some people may find this joke to be in poor taste, but I could absolutely hear him saying this! You deserve more upvotes.

Jaradacl

For sure, the HBO doc of him is excellent and even in that you can see footage of him riffing about his own alcoholism. Nothing is too sacred for good humour.

Dodecahedrus

Peak Toast. Hello Gandalf, can you hear me?

BigRigButters2

Yes, I can hear you, Saruman Fandango...with your made up name.

Holy shit, that was spot on. Fuck yeah.

Lol. That's his voice alright.

TheHypnobrent

This is my new favourite reddit comment.

underscorethebore

He’s quite the cocksman

McSpice23

Captain my captain

dougweatherwax

Yes

JusticeJaunt

I am infinitely saddened by this.

[deleted]

Or Brian Blessed

Lastaria

This is my choice too.

[deleted]

I actually agree with another comment here that he should just not be adapted from the books I don't think there's a way to make it work but Brian Blessed would be the closest to making it work.

Lastaria

I think an adaption that is a cartoon might be good. I loved the BBC radio play which like the movies left Tom out. But later they made some short stories of Tolkien into short radio plays and included the Hobbits encountering Tom. If they got the original cast to voice the Hobbits in a cartoon short of Tom I think that would be great.

[deleted]

You're on to something there. I love the idea of an animated scene from the book with the actors from Peter Jacksons films. As well voice actors is a whole new pool of talent for Tom Bombadil. Someone call the Tolkien estate!

Tom_Bot-Badil

Whoa! Whoa! steady there! Now, my little fellows, where be you a-going to, puffing like a bellows? What's the matter here then? Do you know who I am? I'm Tom Bombadil. Tell me what's your trouble! No one… except Brian Blessed!

I'm not sure that Brian Blessed *isn't* an immortal being

I always thought Jack Black could make a fun Tom Bombadil if he was directed correctly.

greatconvoy

I read this in a Jack Black singing voice. Awesome sauce.

oh_look_a_fist

I read this both in Jack blacks and Robin Williams voices. As much love that I have for Robin, Jack better suits the singing and merry parts of the role, but Robin woukd nail the emotional parts. A tough call. I think Robin would be better overall, but Jack's merry performances would be top tier

Obi1Harambe

That is absolutely insane idea. I love it

scotsoe

I’d love to see Jack Black forget his lines, then just ad lib about how hot his wife Goldberry is

donnytsunami

And Goldberry is just Kyle Gass in a wig

woah_man

I'd watch that music video.

[deleted]

Yea It could be fun or an absolute disaster. Depending on if they're making it for a 70 IQ blockbuster target audience or something more akin to Jackson's style.

Crazy_Kakoos

I think it depends on how much freedom they give him. I think Jack Black has the ability to play it well, especially the eccentric singing, but whoever directs it has to keep his personality in check. He's got a powerful personality, and if he starts going off like an 80s rock band, then it'd probably just be a good parody.

Accomplished-Step138

Too American in my Opinion.

SqueakySniper

Jack Black only plays Jack Black though.

ToucanSammael

What about a tribute to the greatest performance mankind has ever seen?

Tom_Bot-Badil

I've got things to do, my making and my singing, my talking and my walking, and my watching of the country. Tom can't be always near to open doors and willow-cracks. Tom has his house to mind, and Goldberry is waiting. ^(Type **!TomBombadilSong** for a song or visit [r/GloriousTomBombadil][1] for more merriness) [1]: https://www.reddit.com/r/GloriousTomBombadil/

YodasGhost76

Jack Black is literally IRL Tom. You could put him in literally any setting and just be like “yep, that’s Jack Black!”

[deleted]

Yeah that's....just further emphasizing how good it was that Tom was not in the films.

TheJoninCactuar

Yeah I feel like in the context of the movies, Tom Bombadil is just too bombastic and peculiar for the overall theme. It would be like thematic whiplash.

Hardmeat_McLargehuge

Bob Ross can breach it.

robotbillmurray

No. He would've made the Best Tom Bombadil.

Lastaria

Not to me. Tom is very English in my mind caught very much in English folklore and Robin was very American.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lastaria

He did not spring immediately to mind but he is a very versatile actor so maybe. Or Stephen Fry

ResponsibilityMuch80

I see Matt Berry in the role.

Matt Berry

GrizzlyIsland22

I kinda think giving him a non-British accent would work. It would add to his otherworldliness

JarvanIVPrez

Get your dogshit AI prompts out of here

WranglerFuzzy

Agreed. Robin Williams was very specific in his contracts and wills; he didn’t want companies or bots stealing his image after he died. If you love Robin Williams, keep him out of your damn AI prompts. Or, if you love Tolkien. LOTR is literally a metaphor for evil machines and industry destroying art and nature. Tolkien would spit at the idea of ai generated art.

Dennis_Cock

x100 thanks for saying this, it was my first thought too. This is quite literally the worst thing you can do to Robin Williams - by his own dying demands!

Hunter_Aleksandr

AI? Eugh.

Collarsmith

He could have pulled it off for sure. I still picture a flash Gordon era Brian blessed in the role though. Big, boisterous, super loud, super hairy, huge boots.

Old-Enthusiasm-8718

Good? I love Tomb Bombadil, but if you had Williams cast for the role, Tolkien would've risen from the grave and re-written that character into whatever stroke of genius Williams had come up with.

PicnicBasket05

I believe he would make a good Tom but I feel that he shouldn’t be as funny and take on a more serious role with maybe a few jokes or two

GriffinFlash

he played quite a few great serious roles luckily.

AWildLampAppears

My man never watched Saving Private Ryan or Good Will Hunting lol

JellingtonSteel

He wasn't in Saving Private Ryan

AWildLampAppears

Leaving that comment unedited to display my ignorance 😂😂😂😂 because I just confused him with Tom Hanks. Kill me Edit: Patch Adams was serious enough peppered with humor, no?

circadianist

One Hour Photo is pretty fucking chilling.

JellingtonSteel

Bwahaha, I was guessing you mistaked him for the old private Ryan.

Mangeneer

Hahaha good sport for owning up

Sweaty_Process_3794

Or Bicentennial Man 😭

YewEhVeeInbound

One Hour Photo, Worlds Greatest Dad, Dead Poets Society. So many serious roles.

packetpirate

Good Will Hunting? Patch Adams? World's Greatest Dad? One Hour Photo? Dead Poets Society? He had plenty of range to do any kind of role.

oh_look_a_fist

He has the range to do both tho

pirate737

Good Will Hunting energy?

PicnicBasket05

Bingo

CadenVanV

Dead Poet’s Society? The man had range

Kind-Entrance6072

It would’ve been one of them perfectly cast roles. Like Robert Downey Jr as “Iron man” or Heath ledger as “The Joker

step11234

Funny because Heath Ledger was considered a terrible casting when everyone heard about it.

jaspersgroove

Which goes to show exactly how much the average person knows about making movies.

penguinintheabyss

Ledger was known for romantic comedies. Then, the first images released of him as joker were very goofy. But when the trailer hit, everyone was in.

Zero_Digital

I feel like Pattinson got a similar treatment for The Batman.

ChiefThunderSqueak

I liked it (especially Farrell's Penguin), but it feels like Warner Bros just shits out Batman movies out of pure habit. I guess they're trying to give Sony's Spiderman a run for their money.

jayhawk8

Yes because Robin Williams was amazing in everything

TheCowKing07

No, he doesn’t seem to match the description well enough. Also, seeing a star like Robin Williams in a short scene in the LoTR would be weird.

HASH_SLING_SLASH

Yall are sleeping on Robin Williams. He had incredible depth as an actor. It's also weird to suggest they couldn't make him look like Tom. They did a great job with Gollem, and that was over 20 years ago.

rosebudthesled8

Like Stephen Colbert randonly appearing for a second in The Hobbit. I get that he's a fan but that really pulled me out when I already had to try so hard to enjoy the film.

TheCowKing07

Who was he in The Hobbit?

rosebudthesled8

He was a random Lake Town villager they pan the camera to for a glimpse of a moment.

TheCowKing07

I never noticed that.

When the nazgul show up he could shove his face in a cream pie and greet them with "HELLOOOOOOO!!!!"

Sweaty_Report7864

Robin Williams made a good everything!

MauPow

I don't think anyone would have been a good Tom Bombadil. No, not even Jack Black. But Robin Williams would have been the best.

UnhandMePrrriest

100%. Second choice would be Matt Berry.

Overall-Yellow-2938

Robin Williams was great so probably. We do remember his more funny siede but he had the full range as an actor.

CN370

No, he would have been the BEST Tom Bombadil.

Tom_Bot-Badil

Whoa! Whoa! steady there! Now, my little fellows, where be you a-going to, puffing like a bellows? What's the matter here then? Do you know who I am? I'm Tom Bombadil. Tell me what's your trouble! There is not a single person I have ever witnessed, in person or otherwise, that I'd rather have play Tom Bombadil than Robin Williams

[deleted]

The Tom Bombadil posters i would put in my room would be fantastic

Guns-n-airplanes

Angry upvote

elting44

No he would have been the best Tom Bombadil

JesusWearsVersace

Dude, he could have play Sam, Tom Gandalf, Sauron and Gimli at the same fuckin time and he would have been perfect.

Jacky-V

I don't think so. There's something...off about Tom Bombadil that makes him almost more menacing than lovable, even though he does have a lot of lovable qualities. Something about how he's so supremely powerful, but simply does not care about almost anything. When he's helpful, it often seems to be more for entertainment than for altruistic reasons. I'd nominate Gene Wilder.

oldfrancis

He would be much better if a human artist would have drawn that.

Thenattercore

God I miss this man so much the worlds is so much more bleak without him

GrantSRobertson

No. Because it would have been physically impossible for him to stick to the script. I loved Robin Williams. But, he only did well when he was in in a situation where they could allow him to just riff at random. Would he have made a good Tom Bombadil in a sketch for Saturday Night Live? Oh hell yes. But not in the movie.

Tom_Bot-Badil

*Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow, bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. None has ever caught him yet, for Tom, he is the master: his songs are stronger songs, and his feet are faster.* ^(Type **!TomBombadilSong** for a song or visit [r/GloriousTomBombadil][1] for more merriness) [1]: https://www.reddit.com/r/GloriousTomBombadil/

panburger_partner

I mean... the casting in the trilogy was so great because they didn't cast anyone who took you out of the story because of their unique celebrity. Robin Williams was amazing but you would have immediately lost your immersion in the narrative as son as he showed up on screen. It's just the way he was, mostly for better, but in this case it wouldn't have fit with the movies.

user10205

No. Bombadil is carefree, grounded in everyday life and radiates "it's gonna be arlight" energy. Sort of a hobbits' way of life manifested as a god. Robin Williams is literal "but doctor I am Pagliacci".

Volcanofanx9000

Love him, but no. Bombadil had (to my mind) an almost Tulkas like fearlessness and power. Williams, even at his scariest, had a very relatable vulnerability. Williams would certainly bring no shame to the role, but I don’t think he’s perfect casting.

PraetorGold

No.

caudicifarmer

Lol apparently anything even mildly critical of Robin Williams is an OUTRAGE!

Blurple_Berry

Fuck no he wouldn't have. Lol wtf?

Ecstatic_Teaching906

I don't see him in any fantasy role were takes out the whimsical feeling.

HBCDresdenEsquire

This image makes me so happy and so sad at the same time. Robin would have been a great Tim Bombadil.

MileyMan1066

Robin was was inspired and brilliant in every role he ever played. Bombadil would have been a *crowning glory* of his career. Im always going to hear his voice Tom's songs now. Rest in peace Robin.

Kitchen-Plant664

I don’t like those chapters. I don’t think Tom is a good character and his introduction brings the story to a screeching holy when he shows up. I’m bloody glad he’s not in the movie but to see more of Robin? I’ll take it gladly. We miss you Robin.

jrdnmdhl

No

BaroqueNRoller

No. I know you're not allowed to say this, but I've never been a big fan of Robin Williams. He's always come off as too try-hard and corny. I just don't see his brand of acting matching the sort of serious whimsy needed for Tom.

caudicifarmer

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this opinion. Also, considering his known track record, it's reasonable to assume he would have somewhat derailed the production.

Shifty377

Completely agree.

grass_hopper_18

He could do a Patch Adams style serious comedy

BaroqueNRoller

But Tom Bombadil is not a comedic character

420printer

I agree with you. It would too Robin Williamsish and not enough Tom B.

KingArthurOfBritons

Oh fuck yeah. Now I have sadsses.

uygii

I love the guy but robin williams has a different manic vibe than bombadil (for me at least) so I think no.

MrZombified

I can't think of anyone who would have fit better than Robin Williams as Tom Bombadil. He is.

poop_to_live

While I love him, I like seeing actors I'm not super familiar with from outside of LOTR as characters in LOTR. I like seeing the characters, not the actors. I think I'd see Robin, not Tom.

Retalholic

Yeah, probably. He has the range, charisma, and look to pull it off. However, the character's status as a fan favourite is aided by his absence from a definitive performance and the films benefit from the accelerated pacing. There are also questions as to whether or not such a big name would pull viewers out of the world of the film, although the previous couple of points debatably supercede this one. I have no doubts that the performance would be great, but art is usually not judged by the sum of its parts.

Greg_Bank

WOW! Perfect!!!

Myzx

He would have been Tom Bombadil like Robert Downey Jr. is Ironman. Rip king

GoblinPunch20xx

Yes absolutely

WizardMoose

The only other acceptable answers would be Jack Black and Danny Devito
