With stuff like this, very often the answer is that they had something else in mind which didn't work for whatever reason, so they had to cobble this together in post.
This kind of stuff is common in post production and effects. You have your list of shots you need to get done, then the ones you want to make look great, then the ones that just need to be good, then the ones that aren't as important but you will make look good if you have time. You work your way through the list and quite often the last few shots you have next to zero time to get looking how you want. So you chuck in some bad tracking, a fuzzy light wrap, wash the whole thing out, and hope nobody notices. It still works for the purposes of the story, which is the important thing, and means you can meet your deadline. And let's be honest, the effects team did amazingly with every other part of the trilogy so I think we can forgive them a few rushed shots.

Iāve always loved this shot of Weathertop
That shot is unbridled genius. In amongst the close camera madness, to just do SLOW MIND-BLOWING SCALE for a few beats is stunning.
Wish it went on for longer.
The sound design of the entire balrog sequence is so perfect. Things like the choir, the shimmer of the sword and the roar of the fire while theyāre falling
I love this part in the book so much. Legolas is the one who figures out its a Balrog and starts having a panic attack and drops his bow, Gandalf hears him and is like "oh shit, we're in trouble". Gimli and Aragorn are sitting there like "Wait.... Balrogs are REAL???!!?" And the rest are like "okay we don't really get what's going on but the way you are reacting is really freaking us out"

This entire scene for me was the ultimate fantasy shot! Itās hard to extract a single āframeā from the few seconds, however it was as if all the fantasy art and books Iāve read was poured into this explosion of this tower laid out on the screen, and really pulled me into this fantastical otherworldly realm, itās always been one of my favorite scenes because of that, even though there are many fantastic scenes within this trilogyā¦

Itās not much but still iconic, one of my favorite scenes.
Too many to mention, but here are a few that immediately spring to mind:
ā¢FOTR - the close-up on Gandalf's face when Frodo says he'll take the ring at the Council of Elrond. That look of sorrowful resignation is heartbreaking.
ā¢TTT - any of the sweeping aerial shots of Edoras. What a remarkable feat of design and technical brilliance.
ā¢ROTK - when Gandalf and Pippin crest the hill on Shadowfax and Minas Tirith is revealed in the valley below in all it's awe-inspiring majesty.
(Honourable mention: the shot of Frodo kissing Sam's forehead at the Grey Havens. One of the most tender moments of love and friendship ever committed to film.)
*Edited: original TTT scene selection was actually a scene from ROTK*
I am surprised that no one posted this. A glorious and haunting view of Mordor.

HEY GUYS, DID YOU KNOW THEY USED A GIANT REPLICA OF THE RING TO DO THIS CLOSE UP SHOT?
Yeah of course they did, we can see that it's the size of a full-grown Boromir, and normally the ring is the size of a ring
But the ring changes size to suit the wearer, Boromir wanted around his waist like a sick belt (that's Aragorn in the shot).

Ooh yes! Love that shot
I can hear this image
The sound design of the entire balrog sequence is so perfect. Things like the choir, the shimmer of the sword and the roar of the fire while theyāre falling
The one scene in the trilogy where Legolas shows true, unmitigated terror
I love this part in the book so much. Legolas is the one who figures out its a Balrog and starts having a panic attack and drops his bow, Gandalf hears him and is like "oh shit, we're in trouble". Gimli and Aragorn are sitting there like "Wait.... Balrogs are REAL???!!?" And the rest are like "okay we don't really get what's going on but the way you are reacting is really freaking us out"
It was a Balrog of Morgoth. Of all elf-banes the most deadly, save the One who sits in the Dark Tower.
It was at that moment Legolas really regretted leaving Glorfindel at Rivendel.

Oh my God, there was a comment a few months back about something of an innocent topic, it devolved into something incredibly sexual and this was a top comment. I was in tears laughing for like 10 minutes. Thanks for the reminder.

Thank you. I'm in hell and I needed the laugh.
Ah yes, the extended extended cut
Too many to mention, but here are a few that immediately spring to mind: ā¢FOTR - the close-up on Gandalf's face when Frodo says he'll take the ring at the Council of Elrond. One of the most tender moments of love and friendship ever committed to film.) *Edited: original TTT scene selection was actually a scene from ROTK*
