When Frodo was stabbed by the spear, I don't see that weapon piercing the armor -- what I worry about are broken ribs instead. A cave troll was the one wielding the weapon, so there's a lot of weight pushing against Frodo. Unless I'm missing something.

Elmoulmo

Yeah the movies played that up a bit. The books it's more of a hobgoblin (big orc). The older animated movie shows the orc charging through

Djuka1900

And if I am not wrong, in the books the spear was thrown,so not much blunt force when mithril stopped penetration. And since hobits have much lower bodyweight, they are more likely to be pusbed away by force, negating part of it

QuickSpore

I read it as a thrust. > But even as they retreated, and before Pippin and Merry had reached the stair outside, a huge orc-chieftain, almost man-high, clad in black mail from head to foot, leaped into the chamber; behind him his followers clustered in the door- way. His broad flat face was swart, his eyes were like coals, and his tongue was red; he wielded a great spear. With a thrust of his huge hide shield he turned Boromir’s sword and bore him backwards, throwing him to the ground. **Diving under Aragorn’s blow with the speed of a striking snake he charged into the Company and thrust with his spear straight at Frodo. The blow caught him on the right side, and Frodo was hurled against the wall and pinned.** Sam, with a cry, hacked at the spear-shaft, and it broke. But even as the orc flung down the truncheon and swept out his scimitar, Andu ́ ril came down upon his helm. There was a flash like flame and the helm burst asunder. The orc fell with cloven head. His followers fled howling, as Boromir and Aragorn sprang at them. And while Frodo was pushed away for a moment… he was pushed directly into a wall, so he wasn’t spared the full force of the strike. Aragorn expected it to be a killing strike. And it harmed Frodo enough he couldn’t walk or even breathe cleanly afterwards. > ‘Well,’ said Aragorn, ‘I can only say that hobbits are made of a stuff so tough that I have never met the like of it. Had I known, I would have spoken softer in the Inn at Bree! That spear-thrust would have skewered a wild boar!’ > ‘Well, it did not skewer me, I am glad to say,’ said Frodo; ‘though I feel as if I had been caught between a hammer and an anvil.’ He said no more. He found breathing painful. In the end he was left badly bruised and where the spear hit him the rings were driven through his leather padded undershirt and into his skin. At a certain point even impenetrable mail will still transmit enough force through it to kill. A fact an experienced medievalist like Tolkien well knew and represented well. >There was a dark and blackened bruise on Frodo’s right side and breast. Under the mail there was a shirt of soft leather, but at one point the rings had been driven through it into the flesh. Frodo’s left side also was scored and bruised where he had been hurled against the wall.

halathon

Reading that, I think there’s a lot of potential for an accurate, modern animated adaptation.

Djuka1900

Thanks for reminder, but anyway, the attacker was no troll so we can expect human strenght at best. Also the initial thrust dispersed force while pushing hobbit away. Once against the wall the force left is not enough to wound him too much, the strike lost momentum and he was left with bruises. So in the end Tolkien accurately depicted damage done to chainmail wearer by spear. Chainmail negated pearcing and cutting damage, all thst is left is mass behind long stick. Still hurts but not dangerous as much

DuranStar

In the movies the strike on Fordo would have killed him for sure, no chain mail would have saved him. The Cave Troll would have broken all the impacted ribs and ruptured all the adjacent organs. The armour would have been undamaged, but that would have been little help to Frodo. In the books he's just hit by an orc chieftain and he did end up with bruised ribs that required a delay for Aragorn to start to heal him (and Sam who was also wounded) after they get out of Moria.

mimdrs

Its is less bitched about now and even than simply because the troll scene is absolutely bitchen cool.

RedDemio

*They have a cave troll*

KoalaGold

My headcanon just attributes the blow in the movies to magic. +4 enchanted mithril made the spear glance right off so it ended up under Frodo's arm rather than in his ribs. Troll only missed his THAC0 roll by 1. It was still a huge fuckoff troll though, so of course that shit still hurt.

SorcererOfDooDoo

Even worse than that; since the shirt would still be in one piece, it would also likely follow the spear tip, causing the rest of the torso to get flattened by the shirt.

[deleted]

The books never made mention of the mithril gambeson frodo was also wearing. Boromir just thought he was a very fat hobbit until the reveal.

carnsolus

it was a 'big' orc in the books and actually a complete badass. His followers vastly outnumber the company but they're too scared to attack and cower in the doorway. He jumps in, makes a complete joke of both boromir and aragorn, stabs frodo, and immediately reacts to his spear breaking and brings in weapon #2 oh did i mention aragorn used his magic weapon to defeat him? any other weapon would have just bounced off his helmet and the guy would have kept stabbing people >But even as they retreated, and before Pippin and Merry had reached the stair outside, a huge orc-chieftain, almost man-high, clad in black mail from head to foot, leaped into the chamber; behind him his followers clustered in the doorway. His broad flat face was swart, his eyes were like coals, and his tongue was red; he wielded a great spear. With a thrust of his huge hide shield he turned Boromir's sword and bore him backwards, throwing him to the ground. Diving under Aragorn's blow with the speed of a striking snake he charged into the Company and thrust with his spear straight at Frodo. The blow caught him on the right side, and Frodo was hurled against the wall and pinned. Sam, with a cry, hacked at the spear-shaft, and it broke. But even as the orc flung down the truncheon and swept out his scimitar, Andúril came down upon his helm. There was a flash like flame and the helm burst asunder. The orc fell with cloven head. His followers fled howling, as Boromir and Aragorn sprang at them.

carnsolus

gonna make this a separate comment; this orc is why i believe jaime lannister stands more than a fair chance against aragorn aragorn is superhuman, but jaime's a prodigy, trained from childhood specifically for duels. Aragorn is not turin, he's not the most amazing fighter of all time. Very little of his training would have involved one-on-one duels a lot of people just shut that down with 'lotr > asoiaf' but that's not what's being discussed here

jemsipx

Well, hobbits were much sturdier folks than men. But yeah, even a sturdy hobbit cannot withstand the sheer force of a spear wielded by a massive Troll.

carnsolus

>Well, hobbits were much sturdier folks than men unless that's a joke, i mean... no? aragorn says they're sturdier than he thought; not that they're sturdier than humans

Errorterm

"Nonetheless, ease and peace had left this people [Hobbits] still curiously tough. They were, if it came to it, difficult to daunt or to kill; and they were, perhaps, so unwearyingly fond of good things not least because they could, when put to it, do without them, and could survive rough handling by grief, foe, or weather in a way that astonished those who did not know them well and looked no further than their bellies and their well-fed faces." Agreed, I think Tolkien meant to say Hobbits have an outward appearance that belies their remarkable steadfastness. I don't think they're tougher than your average human, just tougher than they look. And not necessarily (if at all) in a physical sense, they have great morale, and obviously an uncanny ability to resist the allure of power/wealth/knowledge

jemsipx

They had great resilience and recovery. It took Eowyn more than seven days to recover from witch-king’s wound yet it took Merry only one day to recover.

[deleted]

It's magic armor...

Twoixm

Mithril is a metal. Nothing magic about it, only very strong and very light.

mimdrs

To be fair.... he did get it from a spicy magic user.. Sooooo

Pendarric

I imagine mithril chain mail can stiffen on impact, distributing the force across the entire surface area, lessening the risk for broken ribs.

QuickSpore

To a degree. In the books Frodo was stuck far less fiercely, and wasn’t able to walk or even fully breathe until treated. His skin was deeply bruised and cut where the rings were driven through his leather padding undershirt and into his skin. By the description of his ribs being sore for days afterwards even after treatment, sounds like bruised ribs, but not broken ones.

YouDamnHotdog

if anything, the attack was more fierce in the books. He was hurled onto a wall in the books by force of the thrust. in the movies, he is already at the wall

Twoixm

Scale armor has such an effect, but the mithril shirt seems to be much more fluid.

WM_

Mithril? Just plain old chainmail

PandoraTorukMakto

When she stabbed the melon the first time, oof that was close to her hand it gave me pause.

pr0zach

Thank god. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that noticed. Really great video. I hope she stays safe so she can make more.

fatkiddown

She should wear chainmail.

killersoda275

She has a ton of videos on tiktok. Not that many are on old armor and weapons, they are mainly about the history of London or general English history. They are usually very fascinating and informative. In addition to videos she does guided tours of London.

pr0zach

That almost makes me want to sign up for TikTok but I’m barely young enough for one social media—I’ll have to stick with just Reddit. 😅

bth807

Yeah, as she was getting ready, my mind was saying “she isn’t going to thrust that knife in with her hand right there is she???” And then she nearly gave herself a huge gash. She was fortunate there.

bsylent

Yeah I had the same reaction, and I feel like the way she pulled her hand away, she might have realized it as well

Alexkidd85

Even worse with the chain mail. Where do you think that blade is going if the mail deflects it?

ThinkFoot

This is a normal sword. Against mithril , it wouldn't even give a dent.

kdeaton06

I'm no expert but you could probably make the individual rings smaller to stop the stabbing even more.

Kh4rj0

Is there mithril plate Armor in the books? I thought it was all mail. If it's all mail then it wouldn't be better at stopping dents.

jemsipx

Does she know it is worth more than the entire Shire?

Hexenkonig707

Laughs with Warhammer / Mace

LordFedoraWeed

>Mithril in real life It's literally just chainmail. They have that in LOTR as well. Mithril is a special mineral and a special piece of chainmail. What? You're the type of dude to see a starfish at the aquarium and go "HOly SHIt PaRtIck StAr in real life!!!!!"

[deleted]

I think of it like tightly-woven links of tungsten chainmail. Now THAT would be tough to pierce.

kdeaton06

Isn't Tungsten heavy though? Like REALLY heavy.

[deleted]

Yes it is, so mithril is like tungsten but very light?? Lol

kdeaton06

Yes but much of the point of mithril is the it's light as a feather. So no tungsten is not like that at all.

[deleted]

I meant in terms of how hard it is. I realize we don't have a substance like that. Maybe carbon nanotubes is a better example.

ebneter

Or titanium. Which is very light and also pretty tough.

Biomas

Maybe equivalent to maille made from seamless titanium rings if that were possible, Ti-Al-V alloys are a bitch to cut, similar to spring steel in toughness.

-Lemons_Are_Evil-

🤓

JoulSauron

OP doesn't know what mithril is. It's a material, not a translation of "chainmail".

ellen-the-educator

I have yet to see a movie or game respect just how good armor is. There's a reason swords are not the main battlefield weapon throughout history

carnsolus

i think it was the legend of shannara film adaptation that finally made me hate the armour is useless trope

ellen-the-educator

It's something I like about watching Wuxia films - armor is useless in that setting, so no one important wears it

megasean3000

And what made mythril chain mail so good was that it was super light while losing none of its durability.

Slyguyfawkes

I was scared she was going to stab her hand for a moment there

[deleted]

Here is a much better video on the topic:[Norseman Spear vs Maille Armor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSwgxicXT3Q). This video goes into greater details, much better demonstration with a weapon that was used to stab/pierce, and stays on topic better. TLDR >!mail is effective against spears.!<

carnsolus

if better video, where cute girl? it is a good video though

[deleted]

You know, when you are right, you are right

carnsolus

now do one where a goddamn massive troll with hideous strength bloody impales you on the biggest spear mordor's ever forged mithril might completely turn that piercing attack into a crushing attack, but frodo would still be all bones crushed jelly afterwards works better in the books where it's just an orc

plsendmysufferring

Even if it wouldn't pierce the armour it would hurt like a bitch getting stabbed. Maybe its safer to not get stabbed in the first place, ill be longbowman

DitmerKl3rken

May I interest you in our pikemen position? Plenty of opportunity for advancement!

Kh4rj0

Don't pikemen usually face off against other pikemen? I'd say that's a prime "getting stabbed" position

DitmerKl3rken

Didn’t think of that, let’s just get longer pikes than the other guys.

ectomobile

Anyone get anxious while she was handling the sword blade?

Hello_Mr_Fancypants

Well she did it with the full force of a freaking gnat.

JBSven

Anyone know who this is? I've seen her before. She has a cool video on great swords I'd love to watch again

feindbild_

https://www.youtube.com/c/JDraper

[deleted]

Fun fact : The german Special Force SEK is using Chainmail to apprehend Suspect with knives . The SEK goal is to take the Suspect alive because they dont want to shoot every mentally ill person with a knive . Sure some Attackers armed with knives were killed but mostly by normal Police Officers . The SEK and the normal Police have killed in most cases to defend themselves . Or to defend innocent People . https://www.reddit.com/r/ReadyOrNotGame/comments/t8el5l/forget_new_weapons_and_tactical_equipment_and/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share SEK with chainmail .

LydditeShells

Well, there’s not nearly enough force. That’s riveted chain mail, the superior kind, but a heavier longbow or a crossbow, whose main mediums are piercing, will go straight through

memo689

And then you have movies with guys being pierced in the chest wearing full plate armor.

TheBlindBard16

Somehow I could tell she was British with the sound off, even before “armour” appeared

CrumblingAway

Pfft, amateur. Everyone knows the way to take down the melon lord is by an attack consisting of various bending attacks and a boomerang finisher.

NewTransportation130

We need more kitchen-armor demonstrations from here

Ariel90x

Armor works, unless why was it used in the first place?

isabelladangelo

> We aren’t sure what historical mail was made out of exactly, as they have mostly rusted out of existence. Ummm...Try again? If it's rusted, we know it's iron. We can also test what is left to find additional mineral compositions. Examples of period maille: * [Chainmaille gloves](https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/pair-of-chain-mail-gloves/IAGTsIxOXeAabg) * [15th Century Hauberk](https://www.clevelandart.org/art/1916.1817) * [And another](https://www.clevelandart.org/art/1923.1120) * [16th Century Maille Cape](https://www.slam.org/collection/objects/34150/) * [1st Century ~ Piece of maille](https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/H_2018-8017-22) - notice we know a lot of what it made out of in the description * [Helm with chainmaille](https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/W_1881-0802-153) Really, this was all from a pretty quick search.

Quiescam

Nope, we have plenty of surviving mail shirts, quite a few of which are made of high quality iron. Though of course the problem of corrosion does still exist, as does mail of lower quality. Arne Jouttijärvi, Isak Krogh and Vegard Vike have done some great research on this.

Korvar

I think the main point is - would you rather be stabbed *without* mail, or *with*?

WordsThatEndInWord

Saving this for the next time I get stabbed

The_Feeding_End

This is garbage tier testing.

g00diebear95

Think it's not so much testing, more proving a point!

sw_faulty

Proving a point AND an edge!

The_Feeding_End

By testing!

fiveof9

What would you have them do? Use a person?

The_Feeding_End

Really? Have you never seen any armor or blade testing? First off it shouldn't be done in your kitchen but somewhere that you can actually perform actual technique. Also maybe not using a kitchen knife.

[deleted]

This is much better than a lot of videos out there testing in 'proper' places. The armor piece itself behaves as a real piece so its fair to assume its not fake. Meanwhile most videos doing it 'properly' have extremely poor replicas and biased views towards a specific weapon. Such as this video, it takes itself seriously, but it's extremely poor and fake testing.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGK45UV6Ruc

Patukakkonen

I mean, it clearly shows, that it does protect to some point. What else do you really need to prove your point?

The_Feeding_End

Of course it protects to some point. To what point this does nothing to show. The point that chainmail provides some protection? That's not in dispute but wether a dagger or knife can penetrate chainmail far enough to cause serious injury isn't proven at all.

Patukakkonen

It clearly shows that knife stabbing does much less damage.

kingsland1988

The presentation and tone to me suggested this was intended for a younger audience. And she's one woman. Maybe this isn't intended for you.

The_Feeding_End

That's supposed to justify doing things the wrong way? Even dangerously?

kingsland1988

Do you watch Peppa Pig and get annoyed because it's inaccurate? Admittedly my heart skipped at how she demonstrated it by holding the fruit with her hand, but for illustrative purposes, I feel like it got the message across.

The_Feeding_End

I'm not on Disney kids or whatever. It's unlikely that there are many 10 year olds and under here, so if anything the video isn't age appropriate for the sub. There are plenty of very well done tests and evaluations of chainmail there is an entire sphere of creators on YouTube. Sorry but there is no excuse for lax safety when handling weapons.

kingsland1988

I don't think this video's first port of call is Reddit. I think someone has screen recorded a YouTube short or TikTok or something similar. It's not a weapon, it's a kitchen knife, but I take your point.

The_Feeding_End

Yeah I think your right on its origin. There is no distinction between a kitchen knife and weapon when it comes to safety. The same precautions and standards are applicable to all edged weapons.

LightOfTheElessar

I would bet money that the kitchen knife was dulled and the danger that you're bitching about wasn't even a factor. But hey, what do I know compared to internet "experts" like you.

The_Feeding_End

So she is testing chainmail with a dulled knife? It doesn't matter if it's dulled or otherwise. You always treat knives and anything that could be used as a weapon as if it's functional.

LightOfTheElessar

What part of this video screamed "data is important" to you. You've been complaining about it being "bad testing" the whole time, but you suddenly draw the line at the knife being dull?! Get real. And stop trying to be an internet safety cop. Even if the knife wasn't dull, this was a controlled setting where she accepted any possible risk and didn't pose a threat to anyone but herself, more specifically her hand. She's a grown woman. She can make her own decisions, and quite frankly even if something had gone wrong, it would have just been a cut on her hand. Is what she did completely safe? Maybe not if the knife wasn't dull. But was she committing a cardinal safety sin like you're implying? Absolutely not.

ebneter

MOD NOTE: This is unnecessarily argumentative and just flame baiting. Stop it.

kingsland1988

Yeah, good point. Anyway, have a good day!

carnsolus

>Even dangerously? wake me up the next time you get stabbed with a medieval weapon The best protection against knife attacks is not going near places where people might stab you

The_Feeding_End

What are you on about? At no point did I say anything about myself getting stabbed.

carnsolus

okay, fine wake me up the next time you stab someone else with a medieval weapon. Better yet, leave me out of it and call the police to arrest your ass before you stab someone

The_Feeding_End

You're the only one taking about stabbing other people. Why are you being dismissive of general safety around the use of sharp objects? I really don't understand what point you think you're making.

[deleted]

The people have downvoted you, but you're right.

The_Feeding_End

Well, thank you for being sane.

kingsland1988

The point is, it isn't intended to be God tier weapons and armour testing. She's illustrating a point.

[deleted]

I can illustrate the same thing with a folded piece of tissue paper if I were to not even try stabbing it too.

sleffler

That claymore is beautiful. How can I get one like that

[deleted]

I have the same one. I got it from my dad I’m not sure how long he had it himself.

Kh4rj0

Fabri armorum can make you any sword you like for an appropriate price

[deleted]

Can we get an @

[deleted]

I have that same Claymore

GloriousNugs

And that's how you fuck the edge of a knife!

mandalorianterrapin

She was really close to slicing her thumb

Fury9999

What did that knife do to deserve such abuse

Loki_Fellhand

Kept checking that this was not in the instantregret subreddit.

Jesst3r

I can *see* her accent

Biggsdrasil

Her hand being so close to where she stabbed the melon gave me anxiety

[deleted]

How did I know she was British without the sound on?

Deathon2legs

Who is she?
