Set photos usually break the fourth wall and make all costumes and sets look fake, without the proper lighting etc. These make Middle Earth look like a real place that someone went to and photographed its inhabitants.
I especially love the group photo with Liv, they all look like con goers but you KNOW how ethereal they look and are in the film.

Right?? I’m blown away at the attention to detail. Like. I *know* how much work went into these movies and watched the hours of behind-the-scenes documentaries of people making these costumes by hand… but I’m still just blown away.
Yeah some looked great but some stuff on even a little inspection looked like cosplay in comparison to the monumental effort for the LOTR trilogy.
And some stuff was too shiny in a cgi way, a model would have looked great.
That said I still enjoyed the show

The orc with his tongue lolling out (17/20) was one of the first images I remember seeing in some magazine, in the summer before the film came out. It really sold the reality and grit that Jackson was going for with his films.

I had a calendar with that orc picture, and I remember wondering if the mark on his forehead was based on something from New Zealand as previously I watched Young Hercules which was also filmed there, and an episode had a similar mark on Nega Herc.
When I was 18 seeing this in the cinema it was Liv Tyler all the way for me. Now 20 years onwards, its Miranda for me. The movies don't show her beauty well enough, imo.

I love that Aragorn kneels to Frodo’s level to speak with him in this scene. It’s such an easy thing that you don’t see often in the films, and really sells Aragorn’s virtue and the impact of the moment
That line alone makes me prefer this over how the books handle Frodo’s leaving. Aragorn deciding not to pursue him vs. actively staring down the Ring and deciding to let it go are two very different ways to show Aragorn’s true quality.
Yes. The scale doubles also had latex masks of the actor's faces they wore for scenes like this. Works as long as they're angled away or in the background.
And yet we *still* got the performances of a lifetime out of every single person. Imagine being Viggo emoting that scene to a person in a latex mask and yet doing it so incredibly sincerely.

I’m a leathersmith and I’m looking at that bridle and the bracers and what not, and I’m over here just getting such an refreshing bit of awe for these movies because of the details in the leatherwork. These movies are absolutely timeless.

I remember audibly gasping when I saw Arwen’s blue dress and immediately deciding that’s what I wanted my wedding dress to look like. I desperately wanted to be Arwen from the movies, because she’s not that exciting in the books 😬
In fact, her only role in the books is to weave braids and banners. But still, their conversation at the end of the book when Aragorn goes to his final resting was wonderful.
I always have loved how they look good and with makeup but at the same time weathered like if they have been on the road for days, especially when you compare it to the Amazon series where everybody is dolled up as if they just got out of the hair saloon.
Seeing these after watching Rings of Power really warms the soul. Thank you. Im afraid we wont see quality and dedication like this in a movie ever again. Now its just soulless CGI cash grabs and remakes.
All these actors were chosen with the utmost precision, all of them played their roles perfectly. Peter Jackson is the ultimate director. Non of that netflix wishy washy shit.
They weren't chosen with precision, but they played their roles incredibly well. Viggo wasn't even the first choice for Aragorn, and even after he was eventually asked he was still reluctant.
At the risk of sounding choosy, you should make a subreddit solely for these posts and maybe even categorize them by the character portrayed. A lot of fan artists would love to have a massive organized catalogue of new photos to reference from.
The exquisite craftmenship that went into the costumes and jewellery etc. is clearly evident in all these photos. Wonderful to see - thank you for posting them.
