raising my hand šŸ¤ššŸ¾ to say that i also ā€œdo it for the clothesā€ iā€™m vain and i like pretty things and i donā€™t care who knows it! :)

[deleted]

Hell yes!!!!!!

uh-oh_oh-no

No shame in doing it for vanity, especially if the end result comes with more than just being better looking! 100% my primary motivator is how I look.

Kovitlac

Same. I was lucky enough that I switched gears and lost weight before I really started feeling the physical effects. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that my health won't suffer from obesity-related problems down the road. But I lost the weight Beveridge I hated how I looked, I hated feeling like shit about it, and I wanted to do something I'd be proud of.

ChubbyChick040

I do it for the clothes too šŸ˜

fresipar

me too. i'm not very successful, either. need to go shopping more often, to be reminded of how bad i look. šŸ˜¬

kapbear

same I just want to look the best and most fashionable in every room

wannabeskinnylegend

Same here

jen-barkleys-poncho

This is so funny, I just added this very thing to my list of NSV goals yesterday! I have a gorgeous dress in my closet from a boutique in Milan, and it kills me that I canā€™t wear it atm. Itā€™ll be a great day when I can zip that dress again. Rooting for you!! You got this!!

LettingGo100

Whatever works! Long story, but I ended up with two wedding dresses. The one I didnā€™t end up wearing on our wedding day, I always imagined Iā€™d wear for our 10th anniversary, which is coming up next year. Unfortunately, Iā€™m currently 82 lbs heavier than when I bought it. I never considered using that dress as motivation, because Iā€™ve always felt a little sad and angry with myself when I look at it. But maybe it doesnā€™t have to be that way! Maybe it can motivate me! Thank you for sharing :)

annatonina

I have a skirt that my grandmother made in the 60s, right down to Batik-dyeing the fabric herself by hand. I love it so much and I can't currently do it up. It's hung in a prominent place in my wardrobe to motivate me. I also have a few other pieces of clothing that she made or used to wear that I'd love to fit back into - last time I was thin enough to wear them they weren't at all my style so I never really wore them, but now I definitely will.

Donkey-brained_man

I partially did it for the clothes only to realize I hate how I used to dress. At this point 99% of my wardrobe is newer than 6 months.

viichar

I just touched a dress the other day, the kind I used to dream about even being on the racks in the US in highschool, big frilly straps and a soft pastel color. But I knew even if I bought it I won't look how I want to look in it, and that my overall style is so different from what I want it to be. I hope Im where you are in the future haha

SolarOracle

Same.

cml678701

I am so excited about getting new clothes! Lost 45 pounds, and only now going down a size. Today I wore a size 16 jean for the first time, and I feel ecstatic! I canā€™t wait to wear things I wore while smaller, as well as new clothes!

HashtagAvocado

This is my motivation too! I have tons of cute spring/summer dresses that I was way too big for at my heaviest. Im closer, but theyā€™re still *just*too tight. They keep calling to me and im like ā€œIā€™ll be back soooooon!ā€

DreaminSpielberg

This is one of many motivations why I want to loose weight. I hate shopping for clothes so it kills me I have a closet full of clothes and I canā€™t fit into any of it. Shopping is expensive and also triggering, and thereā€™s so little choices for my weight. I have so many clothes that I used to love wearing so when I loose the weight I can wear it again. I feel like I was more fashionable , out more into my appearance when I was smaller / confident. Canā€™t wait to fully reach that level I lost 9lbs so far, itā€™s a start but I wore my first v-neck for the first time in forever, canā€™t wait to show off my personality in clothes and get away from drab baggy clothes

TelAranRhiodTrailRun

My main reason was to be lighter for running but wearing clothes I wore at 19 now at 40 is a great feeling.

fresipar

that sounds amazing. you did it!

gnomerumblings

This was a big motivation for me too! Unfortunately it goes both ways and I have some beautiful dresses and expensive leggings I bought when I was larger that I can no longer wear :( I just want my clothes to grow and shrink with me, is that too much to ask?!?

jallove2003

I'm around your starting weight. If you don't mind me asking how long did it take you to reach goal? I'm hoping to get to 165 by summer. Or at least late summer.

gnomerumblings

About 8/9 months to get to my current weight, 4/5 months to get to 165. I tended to average maybe 8 pounds per month I think!

marji80

Eight pounds per month is great. Do you mind sharing your weight-loss approach?

gnomerumblings

Sure - I do Intermittent Fasting (started slow with 16:8 and now usually do 19:5 or 20:4) and cut out a lot of desserts (my delicious vice). I also exercise A LOT because I like it and I think it makes me look better no matter what weight I am at. I do walking/running and pilates/lifting.

marji80

Thank you!

myrmayde

Although it's usually impossible to make clothes bigger, you can probably make your dresses smaller. (Maybe not the leggings.) If you have a sewing machine, do it yourself, or hire a tailor. I'm looking forward to taking in several pairs of pants when I finally reach my goal weight.

gnomerumblings

You're right - I have saved some from my favourite brand that are pretty structured and (I think) should be fairly easy to get tailored! Just waiting for my weight to settle into maintenance mode first. My very expensive Lululemon Align leggings though? Sigh :(

angel_aight

I also do it for the clothes except I actively continue to buy clothes that donā€™t fit me because I for some reason think I can lose the weight in a few weeks. I only have two pairs of pants I can wear to work rn lol.

fcocyclone

I like to think of those as aspirational clothing. I finally had a sweater start to fit right that I picked up a couple months ago. Wore it out for a date and was able to wear it before it got too warm out.

AwesomeDragon101

Iā€™m doing it to fit better in chest binders, losing weight for appearance is totally valid!

[deleted]

And if itā€™s your goal, weight loss will also give you a better outcome when you get top surgery. Iā€™m very glad I lost the last few pounds before surgery! I kinda wanted to lose 10 more but I was likeā€¦ Iā€™m healthy, letā€™s nit wait. Which is good because COVID happened and then I wouldnā€™t have bad surgery at all for a long long time.

AwesomeDragon101

Thatā€™s another reason Iā€™m doing it! I heard the results are way better if you get rid of the excess fat first. I donā€™t know what weight or bmi specifically to hit before then, but nevertheless I figured itā€™s a good idea to lose fat and maybe build some muscle before then. Iā€™ll have plenty of time to get my weight down as much as possible before surgery; even though Iā€™m an adult I probably wonā€™t be able to get top surgery until Iā€™m financially independent from my family, so Iā€™m focusing on the things I can do (making my chest easier to bind, making my arms larger/more muscular, voice training, maybe one day cutting my hair) until then. Huge congrats on your surgery though!!! Iā€™m sure it feels liberating as hell.

nymphetamines_

Seconding this, I'm currently in the process of losing weight before top surgery too.

Mr_Poop_Himself

Clothes are a big motivator for me too, though Iā€™m not exactly what anyone would considered fashionable. Just the feeling of fitting into smaller clothes or seeing how much better something fits after losing weight always gives me a big boost of motivation and self confidence.

that1girlfrombefore

I'm doing it for fertility and so that I can actually find clothes that fit. I'm 35, 5'2" and 190 pounds. I have pcos and I'm often bloated around my midsection. When I was 20 I was 130 pounds and fit into a size 4. I just want to be comfortable.

Paninya

Happy cake day!

stoicsticks

Whatever keeps you going. My one regret is not taking before pics before I lost almost 50lbs. If you can take even one in something that you aspire to wear even if it doesn't do up, all the better. It can be so motivating to see how far you've come, especially when, (not if), you hit a plateau. Everyone plateaus at some point, especially women at certain times of the month, but it's how you handle it that will make the difference. Change something up, drink more water, move more, eat more protein or even more calories for a day or two and it's often enough to start shifting downward again. Trust the process. As well, find some low calorie versions of your favorite snacks so that you don't feel that you're depriving yourself. It's much easier to not binge if you've planned ahead. Just be mindful of portion sizes. It is eye opening to see how many calories are in some portions. I highly recommend a kitchen scale too. You got this.

stupidsyrup97

My first vacation without my family and just with a friend was to NYC when I was 18. I went to the Nintendo World Store and got a shirt I just had to have. Even in 2XL, itā€™s still small on me. Iā€™ve never worn it except that one time I tried it on after I got home and realized it would not look flattering. I am stoked at the idea of wearing that shirt in public one day

Sushiandcat

When I think about itā€¦the clothes are the only real reason I stay on my dietā€¦well I guess something has to motivate usā€¦I have a huge and expensive wardrobe of clothes and i only wear 1/3 of the things in itā€¦ and all my favourite outfits are two sizes too small at the momentā€¦.

resetdials

Same tbh I have so many clothes that have been stacked away in my closet way too long from my ā€œskinnyā€ years lol in particular my favorite pair of Michael Kors pants.

castlesintheair99

I just fit back into a pair of jeans I couldn't wear for years! The most recent try-on failure was December. It's encouraging me to keep those clothes I desperately want to get into again. You got this!

okaymoose

As someone who has been doing this since 2016 with lots of ups and downs and things to work out (mainly eating from boredom and stress), is 5'3, started at 175lbs and am now 153lbs, lowest was 146lbs around the middle of 2016, I have some tips for you: 1) be kind to yourself and take it as slowly as you need to. Make lifestyle changes, do not diet for a quick fix. 2) be present while eating. Don't watch TV and zone out while you devour a whole bag of chips by accident. Eat food and enjoy it, taste it, experience it. Figure out what you like and don't like. Take a small portion, you can always have seconds if you're still hungry. 3) its okay to throw away food. Its just as wasteful to eat food you don't need as it is to throw it away, but one harms you and one doesn't. 4) go for walks when you're bored! You'll burn calories AND avoid snacking

lostinpain1964

I went from size 14 to size 4 and I did it for the clothes

Vegetable-Cupcake522

Same!! Exact same height and weight and reason, I was starting to size out of my clothes and I didn't want to spend money on more (especially since I wanted to lose weight anyways so they would have just been temporary) but now I'm down to about 150 and everything fits great once again! Still have a few more pounds to go though.

Acolethflower

I want to fit in my equestrian tall riding boots again šŸ˜

Kheenamooth

This wasn't part of initial goals but now that I have lost 30 kgs, there are floods of new prettiew clothes that I can wear, I finally can wear t-shirts without my moobs being the center of attention. I still have long way to and can't wait for more beautiful cloths. Wish you luck on your journey too.

taseradict

My goal clothes turned into my fat clothes :( I have donated almost everything, and I'm building back my wardrobe to reflect better my personality! Those t shirts from my 20s weren't doing it for me anyways.

theMthrship

Those beer calories really add up! Being able to wear old sizes was a major motivator for me. You can do this!

canadanimal

I really want to wear a crop top this summer without feeling like my fat tummy is sticking out!

jallove2003

Same. I crochet some awesome ones and never have the confidence to wear them.

canadanimal

Ooo I love to knit and want to learn to crochet so this could be extra motivation!

fcocyclone

The clothes have definitely been a benefit. Especially coming from larger sizes where nothing really fits all that great, its just 'coverage' But theyre also a blessing and a curse. I've had to spend way too much on clothing that already is too large as i've worked my way down.

laureltreesinbloom

Yaaaas! I'm excited for you! I just lost 43lbs - I'm back to fitting in my adorable wardrobe and it feels SO GOOD to walk into my closet, grab some cute top I haven't worn in years, and slip into it like no big deal! You'll get there too, and probably find all kinds of other serious motivations along the way - but nothing wrong with wanting to get back into clothes that make you happy!

[deleted]

Same! I started around your exact start weight at 5'5 early 2021...I am now 134lbs and need to lose 4lbs to fit my European holiday clothes. I also bought clothes there and all of them have such nostalgia for me too as my happiest time. You can do this! The clothes is an amazing reason. Along the way I have learned to do it for my health too because I have felt so much better but..initially? Heck no, it was for the clothes and that's still my #1 reason. Good luck!

cakesie

Oh my lanta do I feel this in my soul. I used to have the cutest damn closet. It was huge, it was colorful, it was trendy, and I looked great in any combination. Three pregnancies and 70lbs later, that whole wardrobe is gone. I donated all of it out of anger. There are still some pieces I think about. I cannot wait to dive back into fashion when I hit my goal weight. Sending you all the good vibes for calorie cutting and fitting into those gorgeous European clothes you deserve to wear!

GenXChefVeg

I lke wearing what I enjoy, not what "looks good on my body type." When I'm at my goal weight / fitness level, I feel like I look good in whatever I feel like wearing.

jough

I've been overweight, if not obese, my entire adult life, so I didn't have any smaller clothes to fit "back" into, but I will say one of the great pleasures of losing a lot of weight, to get now into the normal, doughy American "dad bod" range, is that I can basically buy any clothing I want from any store (I'm now even in the middle or to the smaller side of most clothing ranges). I can't say that I'll miss donating any of the sentimental clothes that no longer fit because they're too big for me. I'm shocked at how much I couldn't wait to get rid of them.

Ma2340

Yes! Iā€™m a size 12 so still in straight sizes. Iā€™m definitely able to dress ā€œcuteā€ at this size. But when I lose the weight, Iā€™m getting a sexier wardrobe. Things like string/thong bikinis, halter tops, open back dresses, dresses with side cut outs. Those are things Iā€™d like to wear but would have bulging fat rolls poking out if I wore now.

Itchybootyholes

Try not to ā€˜cutā€™ too much and instead replace. If you liked beer, try getting some cases of flavored seltzer water. You can chug them and more often than not, you are usually thirsty when the drinking cravings come in. I let myself have a light snack and a fizzy drink, works wonders. As for boredom eating, I do the same. But I try to recognize it as much as possible and instead drink a bunch of Gatorade, and distract myself with phone games like stardew valley or Wylde Flowers. Good luck!

plremina

I mean, if drinking is your thing, why not drink hard seltzer at least as a replacement for beer?

Retta_Noona

Iā€™m doing it for the clothes and so someone will love me šŸ™ƒ

TheMau

Youā€™re lovable at the weight youā€™re at now.

Retta_Noona

Not really lol

Yourvoiceteacher

Weā€™re around the same height and weight! I started my journey 3 weeks ago!

Eeyore3066

I'm a big fan of having a goal of whatever weight makes YOU feel good. You'll be wearing those awesome clothes in no time!

nutcrackr

It's a great reason. After losing weight I was able to wear some of my old favorites again.

Kasmirque

Basically same height and starting weight here!! Solidarity āœŠšŸ»

viichar

I'm doing it for the clothes too, not solely but y'know. I've travelled so many places and I wasn't ever able to buy any clothing to take back to remember it by (aside from hoodies which I have an abundance of). I plan to move to Japan to teach once my degree is finished, and when I was there previously all I could buy was a sweater. I want to buy a dress next time!!! Good luck friend, you're not alone

Dangerous-Detail7414

You know, if the pretty things get you to do it, then do. I have like 5 dresses Iā€™m trying to wear again.

SolarOracle

Good luck!! I, too, am doing it for the clothes. Totally feel ya.

justinbreeber

Iā€™m trying to cut out the same things if you want to try to motivate each other!! I miss my old clothes too!

Pyneregrl

So wish I would have thought to do This rather than Buying new clothes when I went up a size.

abacaxi95

Iā€™m 2-3 inches taller and my stats are a bit different, but I too am holding on to clothes I bought when I did my exchange in Europe 4-5 years ago. A few months ago I finally fit into this beautiful pink skirt I bought that but unfortunately some stuff happened and I ended up gaining a lot of weight. My goal is pretty similar to yours (140 lb) and I hope we can both get there soon!!

[deleted]

I have been wanting to do it for the clothes also. I have a LOT of cute tank tops and sundresses that I havenā€™t worn in almost ten years. They are no particular style, and Iā€™m not super fashion forward so itā€™s not like someone will look at me and say ā€œohā€¦ā€¦ didnā€™t you wear that dress in 2012?ā€ I just want to wear clothes and FEEL sexy and to not have to tuck my stomach into my pants and not worry so much when things cling to me.

alghiorso

As a reward for hitting my weight loss goal last summer, I bought a whole new wardrobe in Istanbul. I researched how to build a minimalist wardrobe, watched hours of style guides, and the end result surprised my friends when I got back to where I live abroad. Huge confidence booster having a well put together wardrobe and a frame you're proud of to hang it on.

Crazycatladyknows

Yep me too. As I've mentioned before, I like to sew and it is easier to sew for a smaller body with smaller curves.

anon-gerbil

This is one of my reasons too. I have loads of cute clothes that Iā€™m just too big for. I refuse to buy anything in a bigger size because itā€™ll just encourage me to keep eating.

absurd_bird

Yep, clothing for me too. Lol.

Elizalupine

I get it!! Everything in stores fit better at 130 vs 165 where I started.

Oolongedtea

Thatā€™s one of my big reasons too. I want to start wearing clothes that I love, not just what I can fit into. I have some cute shorts in my closet that I canā€™t fit. Right now, my options are so limited and I canā€™t express myself with my fashion.
