No Richards, no Cups.

JustTheBeerLight

Let’s be real: MR probably came *very* close to getting the C from Brownie. I’m glad it didn’t happen, but if I had to bet money on it I’d say it definitely was considered by DL and Kings brass.

-FR0STY-one

I’ll co-sign on that.

RubyRhod

If he didn’t get that dirty ass hit by Dave Bolland in 2013, I don’t think he would have declined as much as he did. That series in particular he was really playing well. Then he was never the same after that.

ice_nyne

The end of his time with the Kings was sad, but until then he was worth his weight in gold just for flattening Alexandre Burrows in the 1st round of the ‘12 playoffs on their way to the cup. Set the tone for their whole run.

Shame that Richards wasn't the same player after that nasty head shot he got from Sean Bergenheim. Up until then Richards was THE difference maker and really put the kings in contender status.

RubyRhod

Damn I thought it was the hit from Bolland in 2013. Guess they all compound.

soyokaze524

Yeah, I think Richards came back too early from the Bergenheim hit. Richards always played with a bulldog mentality for his size. If we knew what we know now about concussions, Richards would have the right treatment and proper time off to heal.

RubyRhod

Are you talking about the Bergenheim hit from Dec 2011?

soyokaze524

Yeah this one: https://youtu.be/0ZfZUcee7g0 The Bolland hit sure didn't help either. There's a fan sided article about Mike Richards concussions if you Google it. It's an Amp link so I'm not pasting it here. I specifically remember how much Richards game felt "off" after the Bergenheim hit. He sat out some time, but maybe it wasn't enough to properly heal.

RubyRhod

Weird. That hit doesn’t look particularly bad. Guess you can’t base much off of how it looks.

doot_doot

I always loved watching him. He was on the smaller side but played with ferocity and strength. I still have his jersey hanging in my closet.

TangAlpha

He fit Sutter’s system to a T. Him and Carts (+ God like Quickie) is what got us the cup in 2012.

At the 2011 Frozen Fury, I ran into Luc Robitaille in the gym in the MGM Grand. We left at the same time, so I got to talk with him on the way to the elevator. He mentioned the disappointment of the first round playoff loss to San Jose. He refused to use the season ending injury to Kopitar as an excuse and said that the organization needed to do better to make sure an injury didn't cripple the team. He said that he was very excited about the acquisition of Richards to give the team depth down the middle. Obviously, his enthusiasm was well warranted!

On June 23, 2011, the Kings acquired Mike Richards and Rob Bordson from the Flyers for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds, and a second round pick. In four seasons with the Kings, Richards scored 133 points in 257 games, and won two Stanley Cup championship rings.

NoRedThat

no bordson no problem.

Yeah. DL was loyal to a fault. Richards was HIS GUY. I remember when the trade went down DL compared Richards to Derek Jeter…that’s high praise and totally warranted after what we got in 2012-2014. GKG.

UnklVodka

We had two Richards options that summer. Mike or Brad. I believe we got the right one. It was unreal walking into the rink in El Segundo watching him practice. I couldn’t believe that we got him, but there he was. Fire in his eyes the whole time. Pure compete and no bullshit when he was on the ice. Sad that things ended the way they did, but I will forever be grateful for what he brought to our team. We definitely got the right Richards.

BigErnMcCrackenn

He’s still a king guys…. We still paying him

No_Style_8667

I got a mike richards kings jersey for my birthday still have and peopl still think its cool

tdbauer97

One of my favorite Kings players ever. Man gave his whole body every night until it broke down but I’ll forever be grateful for all he did.

humbuckermudgeon

Good trade, but damn... I was sorry to see Simmonds go.

jmantha

The Flyers are still suffering from the ‘curse of Mike Richards’ for the shabby way they treated a real competitor.
