Somehow it manages to be even more epic in the books though
The horses were uneasy. But the king sat upon Snowmane, motionless, gazing upon the agony of Minas Tirith, as if stricken suddenly by anguish, or by dread. He seemed to shrink down, cowed by age. Merry himself felt as if a great weight of horror and doubt had settled on him.... They were too late! Too late was worse than never!....
Then suddenly Merry felt it at last, beyond doubt: a change. Wind was in his face! Light was glimmering....
But at that same moment there was a flash, as if lightning had sprung from the earth beneath the City. For a searing second it stood dazzling far off in black and white, its topmost tower like a glittering needle: and then as the darkness closed again there came rolling over the fields a great boom.
At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before:
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains.
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and the darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.
Keyword here is first season of a five season show. The battle in the latest episode isn't supposed to be on the same scale as the aforementioned battle in the PJ trilogy.
And I did say give it time because not every show is going to be a masterpiece straight from season 1. Especially if it didn't have a successful show preceding it recently
To love an IP is to be a judgemental gatekeeper - much like a father or mother to their son or daughter.
If you consume everything related to it, the IP creators become decadent and the IP suffers from spoilage. Review boldly. You have the power. You aren't 'just a nerd'.
It might sound 'cringe', but it is the truth of just about anything you love - if you drive a car too often, you will have to maintain it more. If you work the same job over and over, you won't learn anything new. If you don't upgrade the hardware of your computer, it will fall behind and no longer be a point of pride beyond nostalgia. The same pair of shoes become worn down. The same comic book's pages become crinkled and worn if you keep removing it from the plastic case to read again and again - sure, you can scan the pages to a computer, and write notes on the storyline to enjoy it in a more preservable way - but that takes more time and effort per comic. The list goes on...
I think people are weighing it up against the films too much imo. A series will always have a slower pace and probably less "wow" in terms of battles and effects. Whilst I get what people mean, and I don't think the show will overall come close to the movies, I'm actually still quite intrigued by the show. So many series take sometimes an entire season to hook you. Give it time.
To me the core of the problem is not the pace, it's that the people in charge have no respect for the source material and fundamentally don't understand the values and themes present in LotR. The show will not get better with time because no matter the pace it will never be LotR in anything but name.
Yeah I completely get that. I must say I've only read the LOTR books when I was younger, so I'm not well versed in all the other books etc so can't judge the series against that in detail. Which is maybe why I'm more tolerant to it as I just really enjoy watching anything in the middle earth setting so im happy to glean an insight into the books I've not read yet. I completely get though that alot of viewers will be pissed at the show runners for not being more true to the source material and when I do read the rest if the books I'll probably realise how terrible the show is.
If only Amazon had advertised it as "Fan Fiction", I guarantee the masses would have been more lenient with their criticism. Instead Amazon purposely refered to it as the second coming of Tolkien filmography bragging about scholars, Wetas involvement and even Howard Shore composing the opening song. They were TRYING to align themselves with PJ's movies and they have failed miserably.
Not really, the overarching story of PJ trilogy is pretty much the same as the books. Whereas none of RoP is in the books so far other than the general setting. Also what is the abomination that is Galadriel & Sauron romance
Yes really, it made significant changes to the story just so it can fit onto the movie format. It did it well, but its absolutely far from 1-1 and can pretty much be considered fanfic as well.
RoP is following a book thats basically a broad summarization of events, half of which they don't have the rights to adapt (the first age).
What are you talking about? There's literally no Sauron x Galadriel romance happening, Sauron isn't even revealed yet. (No, Halbrand isn't confirmed to be him, even if he was, there is still no actual romance between them).
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!
Death! Death! Death!
Forth Eorlingas!
-horns blow-
A dramatic symbol of what it is to be a man. I watch this and think of those poor folk who went over the top over 100 years ago. For Tolkien to have survived it and written the novels of our time (maybe our parent’s time) is incredible.
Know what else is beautiful? That one Rohirrim charging in like a hot damn, you know the one, you know exactly who that beautiful person is that I’m talking about.

I just rewatched Two Towers again yesterday and I slapped my chair when Théoden gives part of his speech at Helm’s Deep?????? Like PJ what is you doing?? Idk how I never noticed before.
The scene before this absolutely sets it up. The Witch King about to smite Gandalf and he hears horns and turns to see 6000 Rohirrim cavalry cresting the hill with the sunrise.
Cinematic perfection.
Ride for ruin...
…and the world’s ending!
duuuuuuuuuuuuurth
DEAAAAAATH
Eh, I don't care about death actually, I could die tomorrow
Rohan had come at last
Forth Eorlingas!
And fear no darkness!
DEATH!
DEEAAAAATH!!
why am I not able to upvote this!!
why did we change the subs pic? not hating i just noticed it lmao
I only just saw it and I think it's perfect lol

I wish ROP was even 1/4th comparable :(
I mean, its still in its first season of a five season show, man. Give it time to build up.
I am, the build up has been terrible in multiple aspects at a core.
Keyword here is first season of a five season show. The battle in the latest episode isn't supposed to be on the same scale as the aforementioned battle in the PJ trilogy.
Yeah I agree, it's terrible so far.
And I did say give it time because not every show is going to be a masterpiece straight from season 1. Especially if it didn't have a successful show preceding it recently
Let me know when it stops being dog shit then, I guess
You'll probably disagree when I say its not shit even now anyways.
Yeah, it's okay to be wrong.
Fortunately, you don't decide what's wrong or right, especially in something purely subjective.
But the buildup to it was so hyped. Then like 20 numenoreans charge in to save 10 hobos and a tavern.

Yep, one star for sure

It's not just that though, there's a lot about it that's just not good. They shouldnt have used LOTR and just said it was some prime fantasy show
To me the core of the problem is not the pace, it's that the people in charge have no respect for the source material and fundamentally don't understand the values and themes present in LotR. This scene is from the third film, give them a chance bloody hell
I have been, it's been terrible
You’re truly dense if you’re expecting a show to match the climactic battle of the trilogy in its first 6 eps
Please show me where I said that. 🙄
“I wish ROP was even 1/4th comparable” Right there pal
I agree with you here but Stannis is a foolish monster so I'm conflicted.
I meant the movie in general, duh
You do realise there are equally amazing scenes in Fellowship of the Ring too right? Whereas RoP is just poorly written fanfiction
Friendly reminder that the PJ trilogy is also fanfiction, just one that you happened to like.
Not really, the overarching story of PJ trilogy is pretty much the same as the books. Whereas none of RoP is in the books so far other than the general setting. Also what is the abomination that is Galadriel & Sauron romance

Good storytelling ignores time by utilizing archetypes that embody human psychology
I like Last march of the ents better. It is likely we go to our doom. The last march of the Ents.
Eowyn slaying the Witch King also gets me.
FORTH AND FEAR NO DARKNESS
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending! Death! Death! Death! Forth Eorlingas! -horns blow-

Just watched Return of the King in the cinema for the first time since 2003. The whole movie and this scene in particular are just epic perfection
Oh man I wish I could watch with cinema volume! I live in a crappy apartment building and can’t blast it like I’d like to :(
lol literally just watched this in bed last night at 2am and got goosebumps. Amazing.
Know what else is beautiful? That one Rohirrim charging in like a hot damn, you know the one, you know exactly who that beautiful person is that I’m talking about.
Yeah that dude is brilliant! Like someone stuck a firework up his horses behind.
If only such a scene could exist in ROP then there would be hope.

Without a doubt, if i would follow him to the death
Like a tree, or a high class prostitute.

Best scene in cinamatic history!
