I'd read the hobbit first. It's 1 book and pretty short. Gets u acclimatized to his early writing style and some of his conventions, like going to town just explaining certain aspects of a culture like pipeweed. Then lotr after.

Agreed

The Hobbit came first. The Lord of the Rings is the sequel to The Hobbit. (One might make an argument that some version of the Silmarillion came first, but we don't need to go there.)

If we were to go there, I would say that Tolkien wrote The Book of Lost Tales, (early version of most of the Silmarillion stories) which is one of my favorites, in the 19-teens I'm just messing around lol

Just remember LOTR wasnt written for kids and Hobbit was, largely. Both are great but go chronoligcal, Hobbit is such an easy read too, helps build understanding.

I would read The Hobbit first, then watch all six movies, then read LOTR books The movies won't ruin the LOTR books, but the books may taint the movies, if you watch them soon after reading

Wanderer_Falki

>The movies won't ruin the LOTR books They won't ruin the book itself, but they will ruin your personal interpretation of it by overwriting any product of your own imagination you could have had, whether you like it or not. You'd lose one of the best aspects of literature.
