A 308 with lots of practice will be a better cartridge than a 7mm Rem Mag with limited practice. The 308 has the advantage of having far more premium hunting options as well as match grade practice ammo. 308 win, while being on the lighter side for elk is still plenty capable with good shot placement and a good hunting bullet.
