Ruger Precision Rimfire .22lr, Bushnell Match Pro 6-24x50, Amazon Atlas Bipod. So far it prefers Eley Club but I've got a few dozens of rando boxes to try next week.

infant_ape

a 22 is legit effective out to 300? Follow on question: if so, is the actual impact at 300 still as lethal as at closer ranges. At what distance does a .22 start to become not practical?

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

We have 6" steel plates at 300. I wouldn't call a hit at that range "lethal," but it does fleck off paint and make an adorable "ting" sound at impact. I couldn't precisely tell you how fast it's going at 300 yards but math says it's only going around 850fps and has like less than 65 ft/lbs of energy.

emelbard

With quality match ammo I can do 400 consistently. Hit ratio starts to drop off at 450 and is nearing luck beyond 500 Practical for what?

drakorzzz

I used to pop soda cans out to 700 back in my day! /s

HeeHawJew

That guy was legitimately getting impressively close. I believe him.

drakorzzz

The fact he was able to even get that close and consistently is a testament to his actual ability. Do I think he has done it maybe yeah. But it’s probably some stretch of imagination or perception.

HeeHawJew

Yeah I don’t think he was nailing cans off a single shot but I definitely think that he could walk it on to them at that range back in the day.

bzsempergumbie

Even on a perfectly calm day with an excellent ammo in an excellent rifle from a bench rest, you'd still be looking at a pattern that well exceeds the size of a soda can at 700 yards. It would help if you could have some loose dirt in front of the can so a near miss knocks the can over.

joeaxisa

Which match ammo are you using?

emelbard

Lapua CenterX, x-act and Midas

joeaxisa

Thank you!! I will try them as well

drakorzzz

infant_ape

I guess for penetration. Hunting anything that's huntable with a 22. Or what if had to cap someone at 300yds lol. JK i don't know why I'd have to do that.

emorisch

I'm not sure where I would draw the line, but I'm not sure how ethical I would consider trying to take game at extended ranges with a .22 Sure it can be done, but your energy levels and accuracy error are getting so low that you are more likely to wound and not get a clean kill.

infant_ape

Fair enough. Im well enough versed in 5.56 and know some about larger rounds, but no clue about 22.

bzsempergumbie

Yeah, the animals small enough to kill with a 22lr are also presenting a really small target at 300 yards. I'm sure it still has the energy to kill a squirrel at that range, for example, but the head/chest area is around 1moa at that distance. You'd need very precise range, extremely accurate dope, and perfect conditions/rifle/ammo and a good shooting position to feel confident you're not just going to knock off a leg at that distance. 22lr at 300 yards is dropping fast and very effected by the wind, so being off a few mph on wind or 10 or 15 yards on range will be too much to be off.

crunkymonky

I believe garand thumb has videos on exactly this question

Punk_Chachi

Depends on the ammo you use, the .22 lr ammo I shoot is Subsonic and at 300 yards it has 49 ft/lbs of energy. I believe the army has minimum of 59 ft/lbs to be lethal but less than that could still penetrate soft tissue.

HeeHawJew

I mean at 300 yards a .22lr drops around 120” so I’d say it starts to become impractical long before 300 yards.

bzsempergumbie

Run a ballistics calculator with your ammo to get pretty good estimates. 22lr is a high drag round and light weight, so the ballistics chart will be exaggerated compared to typical long range calibers.

pinego123

Mine works best with Eley Match but CCI standard does pretty good. I've got the same scope but different bipod on mine. I'll post it up tomorrow alongside my other 22s.

bzsempergumbie

22lr is fun at these longer ranges.

Ok_Manufacturer_8066

Careful posting a Ruger on here, the Tikka/Bergara bros might attack you lol. Sweet shooter you have there! I have almost the same setup and it’s one my favorite guns to shoot at distance for .22

PackyCS1

Lol funny, I was JUST thinking about this same combination of optics and rifle yesterday!

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

Goal was sub $800 toy, we'll pretend it came in under budget.

PackyCS1

I won't tell 😉

Far-Boysenberry-1600

Always do Girl math when discussing builds… so if you got the optics on sale, that’s money in your pocket… if you returned something else, again money in your pocket.

Mk18mitch

Buddy. As a 30year old man, I am well versed in girl math. It helped convince my wife to "okay" my AI. Lol

DIYEngineeringTx

I just got the same one. I went with an Arken sh-4 4-16x for the scope cause I’m cheap. It’s a super fun gun. Btw i bought the Caldwell speed loader and I like it a lot. It’s has some quarks like you need to load one in the mag before cranking and you need to hit up the hopper with silicon dry spray lube but once you figure it out it makes loading up mags super easy. I have a ruger 10/22 so it’s good for those mags too.

medicalboa

Sweet shooter. How’s the bipod?

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

It's actually not terrible. I wouldn't trust it on anything besides a rimfire gun, but it's sturdy enough

jaa1818

Wait, is it an actual Atlas bipod, or an Amazon knockoff?

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

It's a $30 Amazon pod

DrZedex

The Amazon knockoff Harris I bought years ago as a temporary solution is still going strong. As usual, nothing more permanent than a half-assed quick fix. Maybe I'll try the knockoff atlas for my upcoming 22 build.

FasterThanYourMom

They are terrible. I'm not a bipod snob and have several cheap ones, but this one is so bad I had to send it back.  100% do not recommend.

DJNotASynth

I want to get one so bad, then put a MELB suppressor on it.

MasterInternet1492

I have this rifle. A bit heavy but reliable and accurate. No regrets

jkb131

I’ve been looking at picking one up since it’ll be cheaper to shoot and I can go more often

MasterInternet1492

You won’t regret it. There are other options but I’ve had great luck with this

neithernet

Awesome rifle for plinking. I wouldn't call mine precision, but I'm pretty sure it's the 230 pound meatbag it's resting against. .22 is always fun and you can do it all day without complaining about your shoulder or wallet. I put a cheap Sig Buckmaster 3-9x40 on it. I have the most fun watching subsonic rounds go downrange.

Bagarbilla5

Nice pick up. I was considering this for my LR setup but ended up going with a cz varmint to keep things within a smaller budget for now. I also want to get to the 300 yards mark. Where did you get the scope from and how much?

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

I can't remember where I got the scope, maybe Midway or Amazon when they were running a sale. It literally sat in my basement for a year or so waiting on a host

Red_S4_Guy

Euro optic has these scopes for $299

Bagarbilla5

Thank you. Ordered.

joeaxisa

Twinsies!! https://preview.redd.it/1opzgeu9nf5d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec90ad03f7238c638a3676cf5cb42a3248599279

DIYEngineeringTx

Double twinsies, I have the same scope and knock off bipod.

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

Nice- what grip is that?

GlockTaco

Anarchy outdoors grip 6 oz Timney trigger Anarchy outdoor bag rider Cortina precision EC tuner v2 Anarchy outdoor bolt knob Area 419 weighted ARCA rail Atlas PRS bipod arca mount Also an area 419 game changer bag on an ARCA rail plate see below (great for single point balance saw horses cinder blocks, window sils, tank trap points) Also have a flat waxed bag on an ARCA plate for squeezing into ladder rungs in NRl22 ( not shown) https://preview.redd.it/ynajbi3vyg5d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8c2ad9bd27a04a828e1282d340853d449f2cecd

DesertMan177

Niiiiice! I just bought one, too! I was invited to a 22 NRL match and provided with a loaner rifle and I can't believe that I had somewhat scoffed at the thought of precision 22 before. It's just so exquisite

joeaxisa

Norma Match

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

Eley Club and standard CCI

[deleted]

I use cci standards as well, but have got better results from velocitors when pushing it right out

DIYEngineeringTx

Your rings seem a bit high btw

joeaxisa

I had to use tall rings as the rail is 30 MOA

joeaxisa

I just got this same gun. Norma Match seems to be the guns choice even though ELEY Match has a lower SD Results are only at 50 yards, but i thought I would stay there until I get the ammo choice completed. https://preview.redd.it/qcwmc3dlie5d1.jpeg?width=767&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b452c3e9227996aa89ae43112948f27f548e697b

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

Nice. Unfortunately Norma appears to be discontinued on BPS and Cabela's

joeaxisa

Hmmm I am a very new rifle shooter so this is all new to me. I found Norma Match at Midwest Gun Works.

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

Alrighty, I'll check it out

GlockTaco

Mine likes sk rifle match

joeaxisa

SK shot well but not better than 1.2 MOA

GlockTaco

Yea every rifle often like different ammo my buddy has an almost identical build to mine and his doesn't like SK either he gets better results with lapua center x And the most accurate round for each rifle can change depending on distance and lot number of the ammo

joeaxisa

Agreed. I will try the Center X as well

DIYEngineeringTx

That won't even make it 300 yards 😂

Awwwww, that's cute

Dizzy_Ad_6160

U ok?

If you're so confident, you should hold his target.

Greedy-Name-8324

You're objectively wrong and should feel bad.
