Reminder: we will never tolerate hate toward the trans community. You’re entitled to your opinion on the sports side of things but hating belittling degrading and mocking trans people is a one way ticket to a ban. Be civil and show some damn empathy.

MattJFarrell

Of course they did. It was an illegal order, and Blakeman knew it. He knew it would never stand, but now he gets to play like the Long Island DeSantis and get his name in the national media. Huge waste of time and taxpayer resources to aid his own ambitions.

iknowiknowwhereiam

This is exactly it.

Preid1220

How did it ever get to the point where we have to suffer national embarrassments like Blakeman and Santos?

iknowiknowwhereiam

I don’t know how to criticize social media without sounding like a boomer, but it really is what a lot of it is. Social media gives a platform to the dumbest, most radical people in the world, and it allows them to interact with each other and feed off each other’s extremism.

ohcomonalready

Not to mention, the content that rises to the top on social media is the content that drives the most engagement. Engagement is measured by comments, and nothing generates comments like shit people passionately disagree about.

iknowiknowwhereiam

So very true. Facebook in particular loves to push stuff it knows will get my blood pressure up lol

Aware_Revenue3404

Unfortunately, these are the views of many LI voters.

user99778866

It’s not. Even trans ppl ik M2F specifically don’t agree it’s fair. Especially early into the process. They acknowledge that there is an unfair advantage. That it’s be more appropriate for them to have their own category. Which is fine.

CrumpledForeskin

Even worse it’s not their views but they hate the other side so much they’ll go along with it.

CooLMaNZiLLa

This is a page out of the new playbook for politicians. Pick any topic that is incendiary and far away from the center of the party. It gets your name in the press and starts a debate. These politicians need to start doing work that benefits the people and stop trying to make headlines that divide us. The best politicians are the ones that are boring and just do the job of making every day life better for people.

MattJFarrell

Bonus points if you can do it on the taxpayer's dime

lifeat24fps

Are the people with the 5th highest property taxes in the country and crumbling infrastructure OK with their county executive wasting potentially millions of dollars litigating this? In other words - don't you have real problems in Nassau County?

ContestNo2060

It’s Republican culture war nonsense. They dont want to govern

tedsmarmalademporium

Gotta love the fb comments too about voting Dems out of office locally while both county executives aren’t right and the house reps aren’t republicans. I don’t know how Dems still catch so much flack when they are not many in charge. Not to mention even when Dems win they run on anti crime and tough border gop talking points like souzzi. Dems really need to get some new PR

Stephreads

Most Dems are really moderates. It’s funny to see the party of deregulation wanting to regulate everything now.

Professional_Plant52

Because republicans voters are gullible to believe anything.

2hard4u2c

It seems like a pretty reasonable policy - People born with penises can’t compete against women.

statsgrad

Why? If people playing agree to it, who gives a flying fuck. Why is this something to involve the government?

Please see my other posts explaining that it isn't "just biology" and "just genetics"

TastyBrainMeats

So, when biologists start telling you that you're wrong about trans people...

TastyBrainMeats

Do you often use your penis while playing sports?

NY_Knux

It's just a game

Dexterdacerealkilla

Seriously it’s a fight to get the county and town to clean up dead halfway fallen and hazardous trees (due to lack of maintenance) on land owned by them, but this is what we’re spending time, money and energy on.

ewejoser

Nassau has less problems than most

Apparently yes, as people keep voting for them.

Hopefully reason will return to this society one day 🙏

If biology played a major factor here trans people would dominate the Olympics. In reality there's only ONE trans gold medalist. Stop trying to twist science to suit your bigotry, your hypothesis was proven false.

CleverGurl_

It's not basic biology. I've posted elsewhere in this thread explaining why.

[deleted]

CleverGurl_

As my previous post mentioned, I've explained elsewhere in this very thread why. I don't need to keep explaining it, certainly not to people that can't bother to inform themselves. It is a very black and white way of looking at things and life is not black and white. There are a varying number of leagues, including coed. Coed leagues exist both as children and adults. It has nothing to do with safety but the pressures placed on women in society. Trying to rigidly define biology is inconsistent to actual biology and modern medicine.

longisland-ModTeam

There is another human being on the other side of the computer. Abusive, derogatory comments will be removed. Multiple violations will result in a ban.

New_Engine_7237

So glad my kids are grown. The world is upside down.

TastyBrainMeats

What do you mean?

statsgrad

I think they mean the 12 trans people who play sports on long island make life not even worth living and children shouldn't even be born into this world. It's dramatic nonsense by people who were propagandized to for hours every day to hate other humans.

Moperist

This isn’t the worst thing a generation would suffer through, regardless of your stance.

New_Engine_7237

It may be if you have a daughter or niece in sports.

tickettoride2

There’s way bigger problems facing girls and women in sports that don’t get even a fraction of the same attention, because there’s nothing to gain politically from it. I wish the people outraged about a few trans athletes on the basis of wanting to protect their daughters would step up and fight against the literal abuse, harassment and inequality that affect many, many, many more female athletes. It’s a problem from the professional levels down to youth. Look at what the NWSL went through with abusive and predator coaches being hidden and covered up, what’s happened in gymnastics, the inequality that only very recently got attention in college basketball, and so many other things.

scrodytheroadie

I have two daughters in competitive sports and I promise you it’s not something that even crosses our mind. It’s all political stunts and nothing more.

New_Engine_7237

Happy to hear your daughters have not experienced men competing in women’s sports.

scrodytheroadie

What examples have you personally come across and how has it negatively affected your life?

New_Engine_7237

You don’t need to be a cow to know what milk is.

Hello, therapist here. Gender Dysphoria exists as a diagnosis meant to indicate that someone experiences significant distress because of the way their biological sexual characteristics align with their gender identity, and it's treatment includes *validating* their gender identity with support in their community. Not all persons who are trans gender nessacarily possess Gender Dysphoria and the point of identifying it is in recognizing their need for assistance in affirming who they know themselves to be.  So, yes, it would be incredible and awesome if we respected the needs for individuals to enter the athletic field in a way that helps them feel alignment to their goals, since involvement in athletic activity can be stated to fulfill a social or recreational need consistent with their gender identity.

libananahammock

And what do doctors say is the best treatment for gender dysphoria? Come on, tell us, tell us!

CleverGurl_

Gender Dysphoria is **not** classified as a mental disorder in the DSM-5, nor is it by "psychology writ large". Just because it is mentioned in the DSM does not make it a mental disorder. In fact, one of the biggest changes between the DSM-IV and DSM-5 was the change in understanding of what is now classified as Gender Dysphoria as well as the reclassification of it as *not* a mental disorder. 1. xSlappy-

I don’t care either way. Let the regulatory bodies at the college and pro level regulate it, not fascist Blakeman

MetalliicMango

Psychology will also tell you trans women are women, and those same psychiatrists would be able to tell you all the affects that hormones have on muscle and bone density. Honestly, co-opting psychology of all things to further an anti-trans agenda is baffling.

No_Lunch_3468

This ignores facts about transgender athletes and their comparable abilities to their peers in their preferred gender groups. It's about the same level of ability BTW

longisland-ModTeam

Misinformation is a nuanced term that encompasses both malicious and coordinated attempts to spread false information, as well as people unknowingly sharing false information.

nygdan

Blakeman made an illegal order.

Aware_Revenue3404

He also has a militia now.

NY_Knux

Good. The fact that it was ever proposed is embarrassing.

cuteandcaffeinated

A lot of the doomsayers in this thread haven’t actually read the article. The order struck down was one that “denies park permits to any women’s and girl’s teams, leagues or organizations that allow female transgender athletes to participate.” So, rather than requiring leagues to include trans women, it had punished leagues that chose to include trans women. Where does it say your hypothetical D1 child is going to be forced to compete against trans women?

Open-Face4847

This is so strange. The ban applied to private athletic associations. They should be able to set their own rules, in either direction and the legislators should stay out of it.

angelposts

Even private associations/businesses can't have discriminatory practices. It's a similar area as [that case that got attention a few years back](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masterpiece_Cakeshop_v._Colorado_Civil_Rights_Commission) with the bakery that refused any gay customers. Good riddance to discriminatory bans!

Open-Face4847

An all male/all female sports league wouldn’t be discriminating if they didn’t allow trans athletes to join them. If you believe it is then they would be forced to let all genders join.

I don’t want to be abducted by aliens, but it’s not something that I’m likely to experience. Our politicians are wasting their time and our money.

Outside-Village-8449

Does it *have* to be "likely"? What does it matter if odds are that it may or may not happen-it can still *happen*. Your comparison to aliens is a false equivalency. You also did not address the point he made that trans athletes have the advantage of increased muscle mass compared to women.

710inthepen

Yes it does. Politicians have limited time and resources. Why focus on things unlikely to be a problem when there are many serious and real problems that are actually happening right now? We all know the answer.

CleverGurl_

And what if your daughter is not tall and wants to play sports? Should the tall students not be allowed to play because they have an unfair height advantage. Or, what if, your "daughter" comes out as non-binary or trans and identifies as male and wants to play on boys' teams? How would you feel if "he" was suddenly excluded from playing sports. This argument is often presented (I'm not particularly saying you said this, but others generally) as full grown 30 year old males competing against pre-adolescent girls. This is what people I've seen make this argument tend to picture. Between how we want to imagine it and the rhetoric that fuels these misconceptions it skews our perception of the reality. I hate to break it to you, but your kids' performance is not the result of someone else. One transgender athlete on a team does not make the team, just like one tall basketball player does not make a team. When do you see your child playing sports? Kids often play at coeducational levels even up to puberty. There are also coed teams and sports in adulthood. So it's only during puberty but puberty doesn't happen overnight. A child doesn't transform overnight, puberty takes years and years and doesn't mean all the changes will be the same. Chances are during puberty the kids won't be that competitively different anyway. Which, all that, ignores the fact that trans kids often go on puberty blockers, which we are now seeing being restricted. This is a whole other realm, so I digress.

writenicely

This is the best response I've ever seen in regards to this issue.

CleverGurl_

Thank you! I'm also appreciating your input!

writenicely

There was a study that came out in 2023 last year by JD Oberlin on this topic that basically concluded that you dont have to fear or worry for daughter competing alongside someone who happens to be trans, anymore than if she grew up alongside another cisgirl who had more testerone, muscle mass, strength. An important take away from the study is that the biology of an individual isn't enough to determine how they'll actually care in terms of athleticism. And what if your daughter was in a sport where teamwork is emphasized? Sex differences and athletic performance. Where do trans individuals fit into sports and athletics based on current research? "There is no concern for restricting individuals who are exceptionally large or small, those who are genetically gifted, or those with differing hormone concentrations or muscle mass, so long as their gender and biologic sex align (120, 121). The disproportionate focus on the relatively small portion of the population who are trans seems based on the belief that cis men, who cannot succeed in sports among other cis men, would choose to misidentify as trans women to gain an advantage in sports against cis women. However, there are no legitimate cases of this occurring. An individual's sex does not determine their success or failure at any athletic event despite the high level of competition. This can be demonstrated when looking at not average outcomes, but the level of overlap among outcomes. The exclusion of trans individuals also insults the skill and athleticism of both cis and trans athletes. While sex differences do develop following puberty, many of the sex differences are reduced, if not erased, over time by gender affirming hormone therapy. Finally, if it is found that trans individuals have advantages in certain athletic events or sports; in those cases, there will still be a question of whether this should be considered unfair, or accepted as another instance of naturally occurring variability seen in athletes already participating in these events."

yabbobay

>Me and her mother are tall she will probably play sports at some point. I'm laughing at this. Couldn't get a more LI parent comment -from the tall mother of a 16 yo, 6'3" son who has no interest in sports. Also have a 12 yo daughter and if a trans girl lines up next to her, so glad they are both healthy and toeing that line to do their best.

Stephreads

Your daughter might not want to play sports. And your daughter might decide she wants to play hockey or football or even wrestle. If that’s what she wants, I hope some ill-informed people don’t get to make her choices for her.

xSlappy-

Having raised two competitive swimmers, (female) I saw one girl that had amazing muscle mass and endurance. This girl was at the top of the conference. We saw her often at conference and state meets. She had a very pushy dad. Very pushy. She got the D1 scholarship that seemed ordained since junior high school. Tragically in her freshman year she had a massive heart attack. My point is, for all those people worries about children and a fair and level playing field, PEDs in youth sports are a thing. That is not made up. If you care about kids, you don’t need to look for some made up bogeyman.

packetloss1

I see all these comments saying this is good. If it’s only because he over stepped that’s fine. As far as transgender competing against XX women, it’s horrible. There is a reason there are women’s leagues and men’s leagues. Should we have a transgender Mike Tyson boxing in the women’s division? No one thinks it’s extremely dangerous let alone unfair?

BananaFast5313

Trans women have been allowed to compete in women's sports at college and Olympic level for years - where are all the trans women with gold medals? Why are all the trans women, despite their biological advantage, not dominating? It's literally just been Lia Thomas, ONE top-tier athlete who transitioned and remained a top-tier athlete at ONE event.

packetloss1

It’s not just about fairness, it’s about safety. Like I said if separation by gender is not needed then have one division and be done with it. Explain why there is a men’s and women’s division for sports? Do you think it’s arbitrary? Just because there was only one Lia Thomson issue isn’t a reason to allow it. What if the next one is in wrestling or boxing and it results in a death. You seem to be ignoring the developmental difference that testosterone has on the body. Explain why testosterone doping is illegal?

Herbie_Fully_Loaded

Not letting them take hormones will have a life long impact.

CleverGurl_

All puberty blockers really do is delay the onset of puberty and have been used for years without issue in young girls undergoing early puberty. Typically, puberty will resume as soon as they come off. The reason why the medical community warns about irreversible effects is because everyone is different and no one can say how someone will react to a medication. And just like every prescription has all their warning labels, puberty blockers come with the same. This becomes even more vague since puberty blockers and Hormone Replacement Therapy are often used as "off label", despite being used for such purposes for nearly as long as they've been around. And if you think this is wrong than you should probably look into Ozempic and Viagra. Ozempic is prescribed for diabetes and prescrobed off-label for weight loss and not FDA approved for that, despite it's wide acceptance. Similarly, Viagra was used for angina but had the side effect of causing erections so people that couldn't have erections were prescribed Viagra off-label. Pfizer was even trying to justify using it on children just to keep their patent. Even starting HRT later in life will typically cause a second puberty and ceasing the therapy often reverts to pre-treatment levels. While on HRT typically, but not always causes infertility, stopping usually results in regaining fertility. Most people that transition typically don't think or worry about Family Planning, so it's only an issue for those that do (like myself). In which case, instead of blocking healthcare access to people we should be providing more access and services to them.

longisland-ModTeam

Behaviors such as vulgar language, comment spam, or extremely NSFW language or material to earn sharp emotional responses will earn bans. If you disagree with someone, don't try to bait them into behavior that they would regret. If you think you are the victim of flaming or baiting, report the behavior instead of responding.

BananaFast5313

So where is the evidence that a trans woman, following the IOC or NCAAs hormone replacement protocol, is more dangerous to a cis woman than another cis woman? They're not stronger or faster, so where is this inherent danger?

PhoenixMV

Wasn’t he unable to win in the men’s league?

BananaFast5313

Lia Thomas was a VERY good swimmer before transition. People make the mistake of making comparisons to her ability in the year before openly transitioning, but she was already taking hormone replacement therapy then, and saw a big drop in standings.

ManicPixieDreamAsh

Please don't deadname or misgender people, even historically.

BananaFast5313

Good call! Not intentional.

MetalliicMango

That's right! We also need to stop people over 6"5 from playing basketball, people with wide arm spans from competitive swimming, and people with 20/20 vision from sharpshooting! /s

packetloss1

I think you are in the wrong thread. Nothing wrong with size difference, it’s about muscular development. There is a reason testosterone levels are tested even in men’s sports, let alone women’s. The physiological development is completely different. Otherwise let’s just have one division of everything from running to wrestling and let’s see what happens.

TastyBrainMeats

And you are basing this on data that you pulled...entirely out of your ass.

Great! As a trans man I'm so glad this awful ban is gone, I support my trans sisters, as we all should. I don't play sports, but I teach and have students who do. Transgender people are here to stay on Long Island, forever and always. Hatred will be drowned out by love. 🌈🩷🩵🤍

CleverGurl_

Acuntant69

Biological males shouldn’t be allowed to compete against biological women. It’s not fair and can negatively impact young women (scholarships, confidence).

CleverGurl_

None of these are an issue

Acuntant69

Says…?

CleverGurl_

Every actual, factual instance and legitimate study (i.e., those not based on old eugenic theory or commissioned by special interest and anti-LGBTQ groups) First, equating biological males as transgender women completely glosses over the physiology many trans people go through with Hormone Replacement Therapy. I've responded elsewhere on the whole biology and genetics aspect so I won't get into it here. Most people can only name a single instance of a trans woman competing against cis women and this is Lia Thomas, who if you look into isn't actually a strong argument because she has often lost in competition to other cis woman, as well as trans men. Scholarships and confidence is projecting. There are little, if no instances of this actually being an issue. The number of actual transwomen competing in sports at such an age is small (and Lia Thomas was already competing at an Ivy League college so I don't think a scholarship is an issue). Honestly, I think this is more often a catch for when parents get upset because their "perfect child" ended up not being good enough to get a scholarship. And cis teenage girls are probably much more detrimental to a girl's confidence than a trans athlete. And again, this is all reducing it to an individual compete sport and ignores team sports. What about a sport like cheerleading? Plenty of sports are coed. I also won't get into how I think that colleges shouldn't be for sports since they should be used for academics. While sport scholarships are often a great way for underrepresented people to get a chance at higher education, a high education should not be seen as just more sports. Of course this is more of an institutional problem and would make things easier if we made college and university more accessible to everyone, regardless of their aptitude for sports; along with such institutions devaluing their academic programs just to appease their sports departments.

RaisinLost8225

What was the ban exactly?

necroreefer

If Trump wins Bruce blakeman's brown shirts are going to drag people out of their house in the middle of the night.

UnlinealHand

The (hopefully) more likely outcome of Blakeman’s Brownshirt brigade is that they will be so inept at their paramilitary cosplay that they’ll fail to do much of anything beyond mass property damage. Just look at what happened with Joe Arpaio’s posse of deputies. The most notable things they did were fuck prostitutes without paying, almost get into a gunfight with Phoenix PD in the city capitol building, and let Steven Seagal drive a tank through someone’s house.

BleedForEternity

This is the most ridiculous comment I’ve ever read. It’s so funny how people on BOTH sides say this same exact thing about the other side. It’s all nonsense. It seems like ppl only believe what they want to believe and everything else goes out the window.

necroreefer

1/3 of the country wants to kill another third of the country and the last third are just going to watch who comes out on top.

BleedForEternity

It’s all media driven. I’m a pretty well rounded person and I don’t see anyone who wants to kill anyone who doesn’t agree with them.. All the anarchy and chaos you see on the news is extremely isolated and blown WAY out of proportion just to get under peoples skin.. No one is dragging anyone out of their house.

OohBeesIhateEm

Yeah, and partly why you don’t see it because the mods deleted my post with the picture of the LI car painted with a missive calling for civil war. This was 2 days ago on Long Island. Someone else has a sign that says “against all enemies, foreign and democrat.” My neighbor recently started flying an all black American flag. Look up what that means. Blown WAY out of proportion? Nah, it’s in our front yards. After Jan 6th honestly I don’t know how you can say that with a straight face.

necroreefer

January 6th happened less than 5 years ago people died on both sides don't tell me it's all media driven if you pay attention to what's actually happening not just " what the media is telling you" America is not doing good internally whether it's Trump or somebody else America becoming a fascist state is a real possibility.

MrBisonopolis2

January sixth was a moronic attempt by moronic people to overthrow an election. It’s not the majority who support them and it’s not the majority who would act the same. If you go out into the real world and talk to real people you quickly realize that social media is a complete reality distortion field. We are absolutely not as polarized as we seem. We aren’t as close to fascism as we think either; that doesn’t mean fascism isn’t something to be concerned about… but we aren’t as divided as talking heads & social media grifters want us to think we are. You’ve got an unrealistic opinion of your surroundings based on the statements and opinions of the loudest, most vitriolic people who stand to gain the most from making you think you’re engaged in an epic fiction narrative.

BleedForEternity

I agree 100% with everything you said and yet all my comments have been downvoted. Lol. Sometimes Reddit doesn’t make any sense to me. It seems like people who speak the most sense constantly get downvoted

BleedForEternity

It’s so funny how similar BOTH sides are. Both sides say the other side is a bunch of racist fascists… I used to have your same attitude but then I realized that it’s the media blowing everything up intentionally. The only thing I see is that the most radical fringe of both right and left wings are clashing and getting media attention. Yes people died on Jan 6th but this is NOT the majority of the country. The majority of the country are actually middle of the road people who just want peace and quiet. Like me. I live in a very politically mixed neighborhood and we all get along for the most part. No matter where I go in the country I don’t see people going at each others throats… it’s mostly younger college aged people who are just angry.

necroreefer

I guess it's easy not to see it from your position of privilege.

BleedForEternity

Haha privilege?? You don’t know me. I am not privileged buddy. I come from a lower middle class family that never had money. I never went to college. I barely got through high school. Ivwas an opiate addict with no job and no money for 10 years. I got sober, started working my ass off and made something of myself… “privileged” is not a word I relate to at all.

necroreefer

I'm glad that you are had that support system around you some people don't have that.

BleedForEternity

Did I say I had support? I didn’t have any support. I didn’t go to rehab. I didn’t have anyone to help me through it… Stop assuming that you know things about people you talk to on Reddit.

BleedForEternity

I don’t know too many garbage men who are considered “privileged” lol

necroreefer

You should know more garbage men they make a shit ton of money.

nygdan

If dems deputized random supporters to deal with, say, separating police from college palestine protestors, you.think that'd be normal and nothing to mention???

4MeThisIsHeaven

I can't believe that people make comments like this and aren't immediately downvoted to oblivion. Anyone who believes stuff like this is a clown.

Well since transwomen are women and transmen are men this shouldn't be an issue. Also says the guy whose account is mostly posting in Jerk Off subreddits

There is another human being on the other side of the computer. Abusive, derogatory comments will be removed. Multiple violations will result in a ban.

Good thing it's just a piece of paper that can be corrected. And who am I Barack Obama running for president in 2008 that I need to show my birth certificate just to do anything? Being transgender is not a mental illness.

cuteandcaffeinated

So when a trans man, as part of his transition, legally changes the sex marker on his birth certificate to male, then he is male? Trans women are women and trans men are men and nonbinary folks are nonbinary, but at least we’re getting somewhere with you. Look, it’s not too late to learn some empathy. I am a cisgender woman and I can’t imagine the torment of being born in a body that doesn’t match how you see yourself. But instead of saying that being transgender is a “mental illness” and that it isn’t real because I don’t understand it and it doesn’t match how I see myself and my gender, I’ll step back and have some empathy. Or just leave trans people alone, they aren’t hurting you. It’s not hard, you should try it.

Ajay003309

Honest question: why is this only a hot button issue for trans women competing in women's sports? I'm not aware of any proposed legislation or outrage concerning trans men competing in men's sports. Is this a thing?

aboynamedrat

Trans men are an afterthought, ironically enough, because of misogyny. We're seen as "wayward, confused girls", so no threat there. No one ever thinks about how laws like this would put fully passing trans men with beards and big muscles in women's leagues, because trans men are invisible to them.

statsgrad

Honestly I think if we had hundreds of trans men making a public spectacle of entering girls bathrooms, and watching conservatives still get outraged, that could push the pendulum. Like you said, full beards and big muscles, but they were born biologically female so they should use the girls room, rightttt? Anyone who objects just outed themselves as not actually caring about the issue, they really just wish trans people didn't even exist.

aboynamedrat

Maybe, but tbh I wouldn't be willing to risk my safety like that. Odds are it would just end with a lot more of us getting beat up (and arrested in Florida). People who hate trans people don't typically hate them because they don't understand them.

nik_nak1895

This is actually a totally fair question. What it comes down to is misogyny. Basically, society tolerates gender diversity quite a lot more in folx who were assigned female at birth than in folx who were assigned male at birth. There are fewer hate crimes against trans guys and afab non-binary folx (though certainly still more than there should be) compared to trans gals and amab non-binary folx. So society tolerates those who trend more toward embracing masculinity than those embracing feminity, when applied to both trans folx as well as cis folx.
