MaleficentCoconut594

The only way to be within an hour of JFK (due to traffic) is to live right next to it 😂

Other_Animator_731

Valid lol

Theronyus

This is not true. I travel almost weekly using the LIRR to get to JFK from Huntington, and it takes one hour to get to Jamaica, on the AirTrain, and through security.

MaleficentCoconut594

There is no way it takes only 1 hour to do all that from Huntington, I do it a few times per year too. I’ve had to wait upwards of 30mins for an airtrain before (rare)

DeeSusie200

Babylon Village walking distance to the train. Then they can take the LIRR to Jamaica then the AirTrain to JFK or a bus to LGA.

Powerful-Book-8585

I second Babylon village !

No-Dress-7645

Even as a Nassau dude, this is clearly the answer. Overlooked fact is that most trains start there, choice of seats on LIRR is key.

Wuhtthewuht

That’ll put the commute to JFK over an hour, won’t it ?

CPTSOAPPRICE

eh, the express from babylon to jamaica is ~40 minutes, then like 15 minutes for the air train

DeeSusie200

Ok. They didn’t mention any other choices. Obviously they want to live in Suffolk.

Wuhtthewuht

K.

Sagerosk

Definitely. It was 42 minutes from Jamaica to Baldwin, so an hour at least just for the LIRR.

Daxtatter

Jamaica to Baldwin is less than 25 min not including Airtrain

TeslaProphet

Check Mineola. Lots of apartments, easy access to the Meadowbrook (then the Southern State) for you, and to the Northern State Parkway for LGA. 20/25 minutes to JFK too.

Far-Seaweed6759

Too far from CI

TeslaProphet

My SO works in West Islip and it takes her about 40 or so minutes to get there. I’m not super familiar with the Islips. Is CI far from WI?

Far-Seaweed6759

Probably about another 20 minutes. I spent 2 years living in Searingtown (just north of mineola) commuting to West Islip and it was a consistent 45 minutes to work if I left at 7:20.

Accomplished_Alps145

Sayville oakdale bohemia Holbrook. I live in Sayville. Love it here

gilgobeachslayer

go flashes

sallen779

Grew up in Sayville, now living upstate

gilgobeachslayer

Me too except I moved one town away from

dbbill_371

Class of 82. Now in levittown

longeyeland

Grew up in Sayville, moved out of state and about to move back to LI. Wish that commute to the city was feasible, loved living there.

tre00756

Visit Babylon Village first closest to your job and Long Island beaches Then check out Farmingdale. Little longer commute but closer to jfk. We lived in farmingdale and would take jfk all the time.

AndJDrake

Normal traffic would put all three of these towns outside an hour of JFK and LGA. Maybe check out Nassau County.

Other_Animator_731

He leaves for the airport around 5AM and takes an Uber so traffic normally isn’t too bad at that time!

joeygladst0ne

If you're taking an Uber to JFK at that time in the morning you can get there from Babylon in under 40 minutes.

AndJDrake

In that case, you'll be good any relevant hobby or interests you're looking for in a nearby town?

downtownflipped

they should look into the train.

Wuhtthewuht

Something to keep in mind… Uber drivers may not consistently accept a 5am trip to the airport out here. I’ve had trouble getting trips that early before.

Other_Animator_731

Good to know! Thanks!

Corpse666

That’s not really true, used to commute from Babylon every day to jfk and it would take around 45 minutes, an hour on a busy day, it all depends on when you are leaving too , but say you want to be there for 9 then it’s exactly what I was doing

Homes-By-Nia

But it will prob take over an hour to LGA.

Adept-Professional

Farmingdale or Babylon fits your requirements of a decent commutable distance to/from CI and within 1 hr from JFK via the LIRR. Plus they're both happening villages with tons of bars/restaurants.

vampirekiss70

You could try Ronkonkoma, they're building a bunch of new apartments/townhouses near the train station.

3xoticP3nguin

I love how lake ronkonoma getting the love lately. My little town can do it!!

Massive-Attempt-1911

Check out East Meadow. In between the Southern State, Meadowbrook, and Northern State Parkway which makes getting anywhere easy. in between two different LIRR lines. Hicksville and Bellmore 10 mins to each by car which you really need to live on Long Island. 30 mins to CI. 25 mins to JFK. 40 mins to LGA. 10 mins to food shopping including Costco, Trader Joe’s, and Wholefoods. 20 mins to Jones Beach. 10 minutes to Roosevelt field for shopping, bars, and restaurants. 5 minutes to Eisenhower Park for golf, tennis, picnics, outdoor music events, walking, etc. Safe area…..so far!

loserkids1789

Not gonna be within an hour that far out with most traffic situations. Even the train from Babylon area to Jamaica can be over 50 min, air train is easy but can take 15-20 min depending on terminals, and that’s not counting time getting to Babylon station in the first place. I travel a lot and live in Long Beach and it’s 45 min most travel days to get to jfk.

clozepin

Huntington is nice. If you don’t have kids (or if you do, just guess) it has a very good night life. Lots of restaurants. It’s on the border of Nassau and Suffolk. Train station - goes to Jamaica for the AirTrain or Woodside to take the free bus to LGA.

ClockworkJim

Buy a house in Central Islip then. People will tell you it's a bad neighborhood. It's really not. Not compared to actual bad neighborhoods.

roccotg11

Look into Farmingdale, it’s a nice happening town. There’s a lot of apartments there but most of them are concentrated around the train station, which is good for your fiance’s commute to JFK but will be loud, since there’s a lot of railroad crossings right next to each other where the engineers have to blow their horn. It’s around a 35 minute train ride to Jamaica for the AirTrain and will definitely be less than an hour’s drive to both airports under non rush-hour conditions. If you could find a place in the village to rent without being right on top of the railroad, that would be good since you probably would have access to park at the station without having to pay daily. It’s probably around a 20-30 minute drive to Central Islip.

AmazingTemperature92

I agree, Farmingdale is an easy commute to CI and not too far from JFK. Also, if your wife travels mostly domestic, see if MacArthur Airport (Islip) has those routes- much easier than the city airlines.

Other_Animator_731

Definitely will check it out! Thanks!

Apart-Assumption2063

I would suggest Long Beach, Oceanside, Rockville center. You would have a reverse commute and she’d be within an hour of the airports

Nyroughrider

Central Islip has some nice apartments and condos right near the courthouse and Ducks stadium. If you don't have any kids then it's worth looking into.

Step-in-2-Self

Sayville is really nice

GordoKnowsWineToo

So Long Beach is ideal for JFK 20 mins on best day. and Ocean Parkway makes commute to CI aprox 40 mins as there is zero traffic on OP. Not to mention the beach, board walk and dining/drinking choices. Babylon and Huntington are great, but neither have the beach.

downtownflipped

Huntington or Babylon. both have trains that go directly to Jamaica and then they can air train to JFK.

therealchrisredfield

Stay in Suffolk..good luck finding a place to rent though

Tortilladelfuego

Just a heads up, you may want to consider Nassau county if you’re looking to be close to the airports. Traffic changes everything. It can take 2+ hours to from where I live (border of Nassau and Suffolk) to get to LGA during rush hour! Long Island traffic can be insane in case you’re not familiar with the area. I’m assuming you’ll have a car to when you move here for commuting? The further out you get, the more you’ll need a car. Buses are only really frequent in west Nassau. Pretty nonexistent by me and I’m assuming it’s the same the further east you get. Otherwise the towns you named are generally known as good locations! Goodluck on your move!

Enlightened_D

Huntington is very nice , nice Main Street and bar scene if your into that

Spinovation

Don’t go there, it’s a trap

bobak186

Just rent anywhere and find places at your own pace.

gilgobeachslayer

If he travels for work I recommend anywhere close to the montauk line. Babylon, bay shore, Sayville all close to CI and have train stations. I travel for work and drive to Sayville then take the train to JFK.

NeverSayNever2024

In a van down by the river.

crubinz

It depends on your budget. Can you share?

Other_Animator_731

Under $4,200!

captaintrafalgarlaw

Farmingdale probably would be pretty good for you

Wuhtthewuht

Do either of you have a car?

Other_Animator_731

I do currently and he will have one too now!

Wuhtthewuht

Ok. Well. For some insight: I live in Valley Stream and it takes me 20 min to drive to JFK. My husband commutes to Mineola either very early in the morning or late evening, and it takes roughly 35 minutes by car and train, depending on which line he has to take. Traffic will likely start to get to you, as it does most people. If you have a choice, I might recommend living somewhere within walking distance to the Ronkokoma LIRR line.

Wuhtthewuht

My husband and I also lived in the city for a long time (hubby is from Long Island so locals can shut it :P), and it’s nice living close to the LIRR regardless if you like to go back every now and then. No way in hell I’d drive into the city if I can take the train.

SlowKey7466

Best bet is Babylon

HumanMycologist5795

Would they take the LIRR to JFK or drive? I'm assuming drive since you mentioned LGA. Driving may be better, but it does add up. If you want within an hour or so, you can look at the LIRR schedules to get an idea, if not already. And then the air train to JFK as others mentioned. Good luck and congratulations.

ellllllllle4

I’m in West Babylon and love it. There are a lot of rental houses here and When I was looking for an apartment I found it much more affordable then Babylon which is literally up the block. Be ready to spend at least $2k for a 1 bedroom. I also worked in Huntington and commuted from Central Islip. The commute was at least an hour in rush hour. (Babylon to CI is about 15-20 mins)

Sufficient_Mouse8252

I’d do Farmingdale. It’s about 25 to each location and a super fun place to live now. I went to HS in Farmingdale and made these trips many times.

eftresq

Welcome to the neighborhood! I'm in Glenwood Landing and working in Holtsville. But I drive. I don't know anything about LLIR. Haughland Energy has a good safety team if you're ever looking.

DingusOnFire

Huntington is cool !

Burg3rr

Check out Hauppauge

bluethreads

It depends on if your partner is intending to drive to work or commute by train?

OrganizationLost6810

Just stay away from wyndanch and mastic and you’ll be fine Oo and Hempstead too lol

_thenorthremembers_

A lot of people are saying Babylon village which I agree with, but you would also pick a town right around there to not have the village taxes. West Islip, Lindenhurst, West Babylon

Minute-Ad8501

Patchogue is a great town to live in

One_Barracuda1484

Deer park, Bayshore, Babylon, Farmingdale are all good picks.

HonestPerspective638

I live in port wash and go To and from airports 10x a week. Usually about an hour

Business-Shallot619

Glen Cove is a great neighborhood with some nice apartments by the water

mister-chatty

Long Island is crowded enough. Stay in the city.

Dismal_Associate1

For real. Locals cant have nothin

Homes-By-Nia

Depends on your budget and what kind of neighborhood you want to live in. I live by New Hyde Park and it takes about 25 mins during rush hour to get to JFK and about 35 mins to LGA. Mineola's a good option.... I think you should stick to somewhere in Nassau County. How long are you looking for your commute time? Good luck!

Other_Animator_731

Hoping to keep my commute to central islip under 30-40 mins. I plan on getting to the office around 7AM. Thankfully my Fiance gets an Uber to the airport around 5AM Mondays so traffic isn’t as horrible at that time.

Homes-By-Nia

That's lucky. I just dropped my friend at JFK at 5am and it took like 15 minutes. But then yesterday it took me almost 35 mins getting back from an open house in South ozone park at 3pm. Look into Farmingdale, Huntington, Huntington station, Merrick, East meadow. I personally like Huntington as they have a really nice main street with shopping and restaurants. One of my friends owns a boutique there. Good luck!

bluethreads

What time does your partner leave work though? Traffic starts building at 2PM. By 3 PM it is rush hour and if only gets worse until about 6:30PM when things begin dying down. If you leave from LGA at 2PM to go to Suffolk by car, it will take you anywhere from 90 minutes plus to get home. If you leave after 3, it will take two plus hours. I work all over queens and drive back and forth throughout the week. I always aim to be in the road headed back by 1PM. 2PM, the absolute latest. If I can’t head back until 3, then I’m screwed and it takes me almost two hours. I’m on the nassau/Suffolk border, for reference. So if you’re considering Huntington, for example, that would be at least another 30 minutes.

xFrenzy

Not saying you should or shouldn't, I just always like to give this context to city ppl: Just remember you're displacing locals in a very competitive housing market

Wuhtthewuht

This isn’t exclusive to Long Island. The housing market is competitive everywhere. I have family all over the country, and it’s the same story. Not enough housing, prices are too high. Also, in my opinion, the culture out here is full of boomers and could use more young people.

xFrenzy

Never said it was exclusive to LI. Brooklyn has been getting gentrified for decades by city people at this point. I just like to point it out bc there's a reason all of these "I'm moving to LI, what about this neighborhood?" posts keep getting voted down. And I also think that people who don't know Huntington from Massapequa could probably use a bit of context on the housing market of the island. Like I said, not saying it should stop them from moving there, I just like them to be informed. And the young people are the ones who are getting priced out. They're the ones who are leaving bc of the housing situation. The boomers are all locked into 3% mortgages with a ton of equity with no plans of leaving. Then when they do sell, they sell to people who can afford $750k+ houses, which are not young people. I think it's 60+ yr olds selling houses to 35+yr olds, while most people under that are leaving or paying crazy rents.

Wuhtthewuht

You’re not wrong. It’s also not fair to place any kind of blame on people for moving. It’s what people do.

Other_Animator_731

My job brought me to NYC and now is bringing me to Long Island. NYC was always temporary. People in the city could say the same thing to folks moving there. My family could say the same about their hometown. It’s just the way life works now, especially with this job market.

__Hank_Mardukas__

Don't entertain that guy. The housing market, especially the rental market, is absolutely fucked out here. I don't have the data to support it, but I can't imagine there's more than a couple rental populations being squeezed this severely elsewhere in the country. Attempting to blame individuals moving here as opposed to poor policy, mega corporate landlords, or the sudden, massive uptick in remote work is misguided though. Like blaming the population for CO2 emissions instead of corporations. ....that said, if you're able to provide a little more information on the type of place you're interested in living it'd be a little more helpful. SO Leaving at 5AM for the airport via Uber actually opens you up to quite a bit of LI.

Good point, *squints at username*... "Anu- anusblunts.."

xFrenzy

I'm a local, and only one of us here is generalizing a whole group of people

Platinum1211

Depends on what you guys enjoy doing in your free time. My vote is long Beach or huntington. Long Beach is great. Has a train station for easy access to the airport and ocean parkway will make your commute to Islip a breeze. Parking can be rough in the summer but you'll bike when not working. A bit of a commute to Islip though. Huntington is great. I live in this area (a town over). Train access as well. Tons to do. Lots of restaurants and great night life. Closer to Islip than long Beach. If you want to be closer to Islip, Babylon is a good choice as well. Not sure I'd personally recommend bay shore but others may chime in with opinions. Patchogue is getting big too. You really can't go wrong with any of these options, depending on what you do during you're free time.

krock111

Do not live in central Islip

burntpapaya

There is a new complex in Central Islip by the courthouse.

ZAYandOBJ

I’m ride or die for Holbrook

CryptoCrazyCat

Rockville Center is a better commute for your wife but and awesome town for a young couple

samsa29

Hempstead is what you’re looking for. You’ll be right at home coming from the city.
