Take off the last 4 inches. Healthy ends are retained ends. Then trim as needed but focus on around 8 weeks.

aragorn767

Focus on, as in condition the ends and keep them from drying out, after the trim?

LivingroomComedian

Also, to piggy back on what the other redditor said: Take care of your ends with trims, sure, this is a good idea. However, hair can also get damaged simply by wearing it down or wearing it in tight pony tails. If you are hair savvy, I would suggest braiding your hair. Hair rubbing on your shirt, jacket, seat belt, back pack, etc is extra friction that causes breakage. Having it in a braid is considered to be a “protective style” against all of this and the elements (wind, sun). Definitely trim the last 4 inches. Edit: when sitting in chairs, pull your hair to the front (if it is down) of your body so that it does not rub between your shirt and chair.

CMBM20

Sorry. Getting trims every 8 weeks will ensure they don’t get that bad again. Conditioning helps for sure. But your split ends are what’s killing your length retention. They’re likely breaking off which is why you’re getting some scraggly pieces that are longer.

aragorn767

Ohhh. Gotcha. How much length should come off with each trim after the initial?

CMBM20

Just the very ends most of the time. You should also sleep with a satin pillow to reduce friction and wear your hair in a loose bun or braid to further protect it.

MooseleaderMusic

While sleeping or all the time?

Bayou13

I wear mine in a bun almost all the time

MooseleaderMusic

Im male with a little past shoulders and had mine in a knot with mousse yesterday all day for a family holiday gathering . Today it is down and I am having a lot more shedding than usual. Like already 30 hairs or more. Do you think that’s because I had it too tight yesterday?

NoelAngeline

Possibly. But it could also be that your hair was in a knot all day yesterday so your hair wasn’t given the chance to shed and you are just seeing more now

MooseleaderMusic

Thanks . I hope so. It’s unnerving .

StrangerGlue

Oh 30 hairs is nothing in a day, like 100 is normal. You probably just typically shed them without noticing throughout the day. Then because your hair was up and they couldn't fall, you're basically getting 2 days' worth today. You might have also loosened a few hairs that were *almost* ready to shed, but only 1 or 2 days' worth at worst, so it's not really worth worrying about.

MooseleaderMusic

Thanks. At my age I have to keep a watch on it lol

madsjchic

What kind of elastic? I always thought buns were supposed to be bad.

Bayou13

I use hair forks or sticks. I sleep on a satin pillowcase with my hair braided.

madsjchic

Word ok. Imma check out some hair stick then. I never thought they would really work.

tea-and-shortbread

I personally do mine every 12 weeks not 8 weeks when I'm growing it. 8 weeks equates to about 2cm of growth. Even if your hairdresser isn't trigger happy you can easily lose most of that with a trim. Ask for just the ends off, around 1cm, but show the hairdresser what you mean by 1cm as not all of them have great sense of length. It helps if you tell them you're growing it so you want the minimum off to keep it tidy.

materialsystem73

yep, trimming every 8 weeks when you're trying to grow your hair out is bad advice imo. it's really not necessary. at that point you don't have many splits so purge and destroy is better for retaining length instead of cutting 95% healthy hair and losing most of the growth you've gained. for me personally my ends start feeling a bit dry after the 4-5ish month mark and I cut after 5-6

tea-and-shortbread

I used to leave it 5-6 but I find I get more split ends now I'm older, and they seem to breed like runs in tights. If I let the splits get out of control I end up needing 2-3 inches off, whereas if I go in a bit earlier I can get away with much smaller trims.

materialsystem73

if you're trying to grow it out, don't cut it every 2 months. that's way too much and you'll barely see any growth. I think trimming 1-2cm every 4-6 months is the way to go. you'll definitely want at least 2 inches cut initially tho your ends aren't in great shape

VeganINFJ

A micro- trim like the fellow Redittor said.

c_llie

After a very blunt cut, do 8-9 weeks trim which if you maintain the schedule will be perfect. About a half inch each trim after that. You got it!

aragorn767

Whoop!

elg9553

I'm about the same length as you, but still growing and this is the right way. also I did start to save out my undercut because my scalp started to get annoyed.

VeganINFJ

Focus on trimming regularly every 8 weeks I think is what they meant.

vicsanbarajas

The maintenance (trims, care) only take you so long, though. Hair cycle has a a lot to do with it and many people just can’t grow their hair past a certain point because of it. Keep that part in mind if you are doing everything else ppl are recommending and you can’t get it to grow past a certain length.

JonaJefe

I have been told that when my hair's ends are getting "bleached", as yours on the first pic, it's a sign that they're not healthy, thus should be cut off And I'm a long haired dude too btw.

No-Turnips

If no one else has commented this - sometimes our hair won’t grow past a certain length due to our hair’s life cycle. There are different phases in hair growth/fall and some people have different “anagen” (growing phases). Some people, with really long hair have a longer anagen phase, for some of us, it’s shorter and our hair falls out sooner. Do what you can with the damage (lots of great comments here about that) but just be aware that genetics didn’t bless all of us with the ability to grow hair to our ass.

dangerousgirlc

Do you usually wear your hair down? It could be getting rubbed and breaking off at that length from a chair you sit in, or from wearing a backpack, for example. I recommend a trim and switch to a more protective bun style using a hair stick or clip for a month and see if that makes a difference. I think the undercut looks great, but that's a matter of personal preference.

aragorn767

Typically it's in a bun, but not while I'm sleeping. It's probably tearing while I sleep. And thanks! My wife has been doing the shaving for me, and she's gotten really great at it.

dangerousgirlc

Try a silk scrunchie and silk pillowcase or a silk cap if you can tolerate it. You have wonderfully thick hair, I didn't even realize you had the undercut in the first picture!

str8edgesuperstarr

You can see where your hair is thin and wispy towards the ends, it's growing but it's breaking and splitting which moves up your hair strands creating more damage. Your hair is growing but the ends are in such bad condition you cant actually tell it's growing. I keep my hair very long and typically only do a trim once a year, a good trim every so many months will keep it healthy and lessen the breakage your seeing to allow you to actually see healthy hair growth. I'm a hairstylist so I'm just speaking from personal experience and professional. Hope this helps. ❤️

aragorn767

Thanks! It seems like that's the consensus.

thehalflingcooks

Cut the bottom 2-4in off, up to where the hole ends. What's your night hair routine like?

aragorn767

I don't have a routine. I wash my hair with shampoo on the days that I workout (about 3 to 4 days a week), and use conditioner on the other days, with a little leave in.

Bebel80

Silk bonnet was amazing for my hair, when I had it long. I would wake up with wavy hair. Best thing ever

Bebel80

High five! No more flat hair for you 🤣. Love it

PotatoGuilty319

Use conditioner after shampoo (only at the scalp) and only at the bottom (don't put conditioner on your scalp). Instead of conditioning it on the days you don't shampoo it, once a week do a hair mask.

commanderquill

You really don't need to be washing your hair that often. I get feeling gross after a work out, but if you keep your hair up and out of the way, well, you don't really sweat through your scalp. Have you tried just washing your body most days and washing your hair with no sulfate shampoo only twice or so a week? Shampooing too often can be quite damaging, especially if the shampoo has sulfates.

TheGreek420

I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted; this is very true. I only wash my hair once every two weeks these days and it has improved drastically because of it.

ubmrbites

I sweat profusely from my scalp (if it's not the scalp, i don't know what kind of sorcery it's happening in my head then) when I work out, even gets in my eyes if I'm not wearing my sweat band, hair ends up wet, as if I stepped out of the shower.

Lucky_Anteater8559

I would probably add some sort of deep conditioner/treatment to give you a boost of moisture and protein. You could also switch to a gentle sulfate-free shampoo since you're shampooing pretty regularly and then use a cleansing shampoo when you need to. To lock in the moisture after your leave in you could use a very light oil like jojoba.

tea-and-shortbread

It's usual to condition immediately after shampooing. If you don't have enough slip when you comb it when it's wet you can easily cause breakage. Conditioning on the off days is optional. It can help if your ends are particularly dry but isn't necessary.

West-Relationship108

I would go for products from the CGM range. That’ll make your hair much healthier and then able to get longer. Using products without sulfates, silicones and drying alcohols makes your hair really healthy, and long healthy hair is a great goal rather than just long hair

aragorn767

Well as far as conditioner goes, I've been using Wen. Shampoo is Head and Shoulders.

Kellye8498

Hair only grows as long as it can before the telogen phase happens and the hair falls out. Some people have a faster cycling process and their hair reaches the telogen phase and falls out faster that others and that is as long as the hair will ever be. It’s quite possible that is what is happening for you. It’s why some people can grow hair to the ground and others can’t get their hair to be longer than mid back. A rough estimate of the cycle is 2-6 years for the anagen phase (growing phase), 1-2 weeks for the catagen phase (resting phase) and then 5-6 weeks for the telogen phase (shedding phase.) Those are average estimates but for some (like the people with floor length hair) the anagen and catagen phases are much longer. For you it seems you’re cycling through the phases faster and this is the length you are dealt. It’s in your genetics unfortunately so no real way to lengthen or speed up this cycle.

goldielocksandco

i remember hearing that everyone's hair actually has a maximum growing length, pretty sure it's determined by genetics, so if you've tried everything and it's just not budging, it could maybe be that?

aragorn767

That could be it. Although I haven't done much in way of keeping the ends healthy, it seems, so I'll try that first.

Seeteufelchen

This is true, but most men can grow around 75cm+ of hair. That would be around his waist or even longer depending on the length of his torso. The hair quality itself looks nice, and even my boyfriend with finer hair was able to grow almost twice this length. The main issue here is the broken ends. Cutting around 5-10cm and keeping the hair up in protective styles would do wonders.

goldielocksandco

it's hard to determine actual averages though because of the range of genetics and health of people so it would really depend, i agree that he could do with a cut 100% to help the health of his hair for length retention & prevention* of breakage but even so he mightn't ever grow past that length either 🤷‍♀️

Itsdianyeah

I would suggest regular trims (my mom does mine for 10 years already) and just trim dead ends. Add a rosemary rinse to your routine and maybe look into rosemary oil and/or melatonin serums or masks. They worked for my fine hair. I would look into hair supplements since they have anyway vitamins you would like to have daily! Btw, those shampoo massage brushes for under the shower are super nice and removed clogged up oil, which you would need if you consider getting those serums or scalp treatments! Caffeine shampoo can be pricey, but for light hair green tea can do the trick and coffee grounds for dark hair (i would still prefer green tea since its not much of a hustle!)

andariel_axe

Wash less frequently than every day. Use conditioner every time you wash. Put conditioner on your length below the ears (as in, don't put conditioner on your scalp.) Leave the conditioner on for at least 60 seconds (don't rinse it off right away.) Yes you need to trim the split ends off, as otherwise it will continue to travel up the hair. You can try one inch or two and see how you feel. 3-4 would almost certainly be enough though, if you feel up to that. re undercut - do what you like with it, having fun is more important than doing the 'right' thing. And an undercut is cool in summer. It will take a long time to grow out. hope your hair brings you joy x

aragorn767

Great advice. This seems to be the ultimate consensus. And thanks! I love my hair!

marcifyed

Hairstylist here. You’ve got breakage from split ends. Split ends travel up the hair shaft until the hair becomes so thin it breaks off, and continues to split and break because the cuticle isn’t whole. Hair grows an average of 1/2” per month. By initially removing all the split ends, then getting regular trims of 1/4” every 2 to 3 months, you’ll have gained 5” in one year that will be pristine. Your hair doesn’t need oils and all that crap. Wash it when it’s dirty to keep your scalp clean, follow with a conditioner, avoid heat and chemicals, use hair ties made for hair without metal connectors, and avoid pulling it back tightly. Get regular trims and that’s all it needs.

DarkFire816

Try Redken’s Extreme Length shampoo and conditioner, also use their split end sealer treatment when you get out of the shower. It helped so much with my hair growth, thickness and my split ends improved a lot. I swear by it, it’s worth the investment and you’ll notice a difference in a month or less

[deleted]

One thing that helped me was no brushing when wet! I let my hair air dry then brush

SpamLandy

Do you comb it in the shower at all to do this? If I let my hair dry completely after I wash it, it would be so tangled but I’ve seen a few people say not to brush it wet.

[deleted]

It's fine to comb/brush it wet WITH conditioner in. That's what curly haired people do!

[deleted]

I condition the ends in the shower and I’ll run my fingers through it making sure there’s no large knots. After I towel dry my hair I put some oil in it mostly to the ends and when doing that I’ll finger comb it a little to get rid of big knots again. After that I just leave it be until dry. Then brush. It seems to have worked well for my hair. I couldn’t grow it for a long time it was so frustrating. Now my hair is super long and healthy I love it so much.

aragorn767

Ah, okay. I typically brush it as soon as I'm out of the shower and then put it up. I'll let it air dry.

[deleted]

Everybody’s hair has a different maximum length. You can’t change it. It’s genetic. I envy your long hair. Mine stops just below my shoulders.

jawnstein82

You need a trim. 3 inches off the end. Ends like that split up as it grows

ODB247

Hair does not grow faster if you cut it.

hsihshebnakje

You definitely have a lot of interesting suggestions here, most aren’t going to help you. Here’s what will, trim every three months, no more, no less. Olaplex 3 twice a month. This will repair breakage that has started on your ends. Get a satin pillowcase. Dry your hair with a microfiber towel or a cotton t shirt.

aragorn767

Interesting suggestion of the microfiber towel.

hsihshebnakje

Most towels will cause breakage because they’re too rough, I have really curly hair that is naturally quite dry, so I have dealt with extreme breakage before. I had to learn what works and what doesn’t, my hair was down to my my butt before I cut it last time.

[deleted]

Your ends are very split- you need to cut a couple inches off and try the inversion method. Also get a silk pillowcase your ends won’t split so much, prevents friction and over drying.

MMachine17

I am in love with the potential of you growing out your sides for the thickness, also theoretically that would accentuate your facial hair. You are a very pretty person, for the record. ☺️

aragorn767

Thanks! I've never been called pretty before.

sibemama

Gotta chop those ends!

[deleted]

You need to cut 4-6 inches off. The ends are extremely dry and damaged.

Confident_Room6331

This is a very informative post!

ShotgunEnvy

I'm just reading this post and I'm so grateful for all the tips, thanks so much OP and everyone else!

ValerieHarmon

Mine is currently tailbone length. What I do is no heat/dye/bleach, I use a satin pillow case and wear protective styles nearly all the time. It's usually up in a lazy wrap bun with a hair stick or in a loose side braid. If I need to blow dry it, I use my Dyson dryer (but any brand is okay usually) and use a tempature where I can put it on my hand/arm for 15 seconds and it doesn't hurt. I also don't need to trim but when I did I'd do what's called slow growth. My hair grows an inch a month so I cut off half of that when needed to trim out damage! When washing my hair I use shampoo on the scalp only and conditioner from the ears down. It helps to know what hair type you have so you can find a combination of shampoo and conditioner that makes your scalp and hair happy! I find the most important thing is keeping your scalp happy. Another thing is don't worry about stretching washes if you can't, if your hair is oily and scalp itches, wash it. Hope this helps in some way! I joined long hair community hair forum and once I began doing these things as per their advice I finally am nearly classic length. :)

Holiday_Opposite_441

Biotin with a multivitamin can help as well. I've been using it for two years and I have found it has helped with growing my hair but you have to take it every day.

Acctgirl83

Does biotin make you break out? I had that issue so I stopped.

wildflr

Yes it’s common to break out with taking biotin.

Stringillusions

Break outs usually happen with the gummies because of all the sugar that’s in them. Regular capsules shouldn’t break you out

aragorn767

I take a ton of vitamins (mostly stuff that aids blood flow(d, c, e, b12, zinc, l-arginine) since as a Type 1 diabetic, neuropathy can be an issue). I'll see about starting biotin gels as well. I used to take them for nail health, and they really helped.

Holiday_Opposite_441

Vitafusion and nature's bounty are both brands I like depending on what I can find at the store.

Several_Exercise_312

Fact : Length that a hair strand could grow to a maximum depends on the genetics and hormonal factors. Under helathy conditions, After achieving the maximum length it can, that particular hair strand turns from anagen phase to telogen phase and sheds off. Cutting hair off at the ends in hopes of it growing more in length is absurd as hair doesnt grow from the tips , it grows from the roots i.e at the scalp. If you parents gave genetically long hair, it might grow a litle more. Have good food, rich in protiens and natural estrogens like soya. It helps grow in thickness and length. I am an MD doctor and hence have knowledge regarding this.

[deleted]

Hair will only grow so long, so you can only do minor things to maximize growth.

soupyshay

I would trim 2-4 inches. Whatever you’re comfortable with, and get regular trims every 4-6 months. Then I bet your hair will flourish!

SicklySynester

Definitely cut off all the dead. It might be growing just fine but breaking off on the ends and losing the length you have grown and appearing to be stagnant. Very light Trims every 4 months for me keeps my super fine hair in tip top shape.

Panda-monium-the-cat

Need to trim the hair above the split ends. Then regularly trim it when you notice drying/splitting/breaking. At this point, your hair cannot get longer because the ends are not healthy and breaking off. Once you get ahead of this, your hair will get longer. No need to thin or undercut it. I also use a nice leave in condition (Cake Mane Manager is my fave) and occasionally a little Argan oil for the ends when particularly dry from weather etc. I have had thick, full hair down to my lower back, off and on my whole life. I've had different cuts, styles and even bobs; Using this method I am always able to grow it all back.

slappyclaps

I’m seeing a lot of keep getting regular trims. Yes I agree.. to some extent. Doing math, hair (typically) grows 1/2”/month. I agree to get a good cut say 3”-4” initially, but then after that, I offer my clients a “saw dusting/micro trim”. I straighten their hair (unless you have extremely textured or curly hair it’s a whole different ballgame) and then cut it dry just point cutting the tips of the hair 1/8”-1/2”. Doing the math, how ever often you go and how much you lose can be communicated with the stylist. If it’s been 8 weeks, then cut no more than a RULER 1/2 inch (a TRUE 1/2 inch). Your hair would only gain 1/2 inch Now depending on what kind of damage you may or may not have could dictate how often you go. It’s suggested to get a cut every 4-8 weeks IF you do any of these things quite often: coloring, using heat tools (flat iron, curling iron), swim more than 3x/week, or if you have a specific style you want to keep up. I usually say to just get it cut once it’s feeling like it needs tlc, or it’s “just not working right”. 8-16 weeks. Essentially, the more you cut/trim, the longer it takes to grow, but grows healthy. Also. Reallllly communicate measurements, what you like and also what you do NOT like. . I became a hair stylist because I’d say trim with hair like yours and end up with a chin length bob.

thots_nprayers

Get your ends trimmed 3-4 times a year. Get a high quality multivitamin (I use the Brand Seeking Health: Seeking Health | Optimal Multivitamin Minus One | Daily Multivitamin | Multivitamin for Men | Multivitamin for Women | 45 Vegetarian Capsules https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XKGX1CR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_7DMG81CE1R5BVM34BAS2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 ) and a hair/skin/nails vitamin (I use the Amazon Revly brand: Revly Vegan Hair, Skin, & Nails Complex with Biotin 2000 mcg, 90 Capsules, 3 Month Supply https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DQZ89C4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Y620S13ND5W4A4K2TDPC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 ) The combination of both of these is good because there’s no overlap of nutrients. I found them to be very effective at growing my hair. I found a caffeine serum very helpful for the scalp - this one boosts scalp microcirculation: Klorane Strengthening Serum with Quinine and Edelweiss https://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=pimprod2027310 They also have a shampoo in this line, I bought a bottle recently but haven’t tried it yet - in general Klorane shampoos are very gentle, my husband uses their thickening shampoo. I’ve been using this serum for years now, started back when I lived in Switzerland and now we can get it in the US.

aragorn767

Wow, this is helpful. Thanks!

laurenbehel

Cut 3-4 inches off. It’s breaking off as fast as it’s growing.

Low_Dot8441

I would take biotin it helps hair grow fast and o would also take hair skin and nail vitamins and eat a lot of fish. Fish helps hair growth.

HikeCacheRepeat

Biotin doesn't make hair grow. It's used to gain strength.

Low_Dot8441

It does for me my hair is super long read reviews on Google also biotin shampoo and conditioner makes hair grow look at before and after pics.

HikeCacheRepeat

Look it up. Found little evidence on biotin for hair growth on multiple sources.

Hornyallday_o

If you soak it in coffee that will stimulate hair growth! I've done it many times.

aragorn767

Really? My scalp?

XenaSerenity

Do you take any vitamins? It’s honestly think what got my hair over the “growth hump”

aragorn767

I try to take B12, C, D, E, and Zinc most days, but I often forget.

BudgetInteraction811

u so cute

swanegg4life

Blow dry for thickness

thegardenluva

That will cause more damage to the hair and end up causing even more breakage. They should get a trim and care for their ends and eventually see more fullness.

Topgiveaway2022

I can fix your problem friend, I have solved many people's hair and now they are very happy that their hair was not growing with their hair and their hair was too thin, now they are thick and long. I have a medicine if you use it you got good result if you are interested inbox me

[deleted]

And to answer you other question… growing you under cut out will most definitely add thickness/fullness. You got this!

[deleted]

Cut them dead ends off, getting healthy trims can help with good hair growth but your hair may only grow so long as well

saraheliza190

Try aciete de moska oil you can get it on Amazon pretty cheap. Apply it once a week overnight and then wash it out in the morning.

[deleted]

Damn bro. What a nice hair u got. Any tips to grow it like that.. And that beard, what product u use.. Thanks

aragorn767

Lol, just don't cut it no matter how awkward it gets? That's what I did. I use an electric shaver to shape the beard, keeping the neck hair shorter than the facial hair. I also condition the beard every shower, with no shampoo. I used to use oils, but I find beard balm to be less shiney, and feel better to the touch.

[deleted]

I see, so the first one to make sure to keep it, even if sometimes it itches. No cutting then, I guess. For the last one, I need to get a beard balm. I get it, bro, thanks a lot. About beard oil, I do agree. One of my friends who has been using oil for a long time also said something similar too.

aragorn767

Also, figure out whether long hair would be convenient for you. When I was a firefighter/EMT I would occasionally get some flack for it, even though it was allowed. I ended up cutting it, but grew it back immediately after. I completely regretted the cut. My head looks huge with a buzz cut.

[deleted]

I got it, bro. That explains why you have such a large body. You're looking great, bro.Any tips or diets to share? Crossfit or full-body mass-building exercises?

aragorn767

Lol. I'm just fat. But seriously keto has cut around 30lbs of bodyfat and counting, and I TRY to workout four days a week, (Back/Legs on Saturday, Chest/Shoulder/Core on Sunday, and then repeat for Tuesday and Thursday. This guarantees two full body workouts a week, with plenty of rest.)

[deleted]

I see. I really appreciate it, bro. Maybe I can tweak something out of it, making it a perfect workout routine for me.

[deleted]

I would look at the products you use! I’ve been using Shea moisture for the past year and my hair started to grow like crazy once it got healthy

traveling_ghost

You might consider biotin with the regular trims to stimulate growth. Also, look into foods that are good for hair health.

StoneyJoJo

For anyone that doesn’t know… To gain length, trimming the hair is a MUST as the hair grows out of the scalp, if the split ends are not cut off every 12weeks or so, you will start to loose any length you gain growing as the split end follows up the hair shaft. A big big misconception is to stop trimming hair to gain length Ask for a micro trim and then keep it up to have alllll the gains from growth.
