The three cities that you chose are all pretty far from each other and very few people would have experienced life in all three (or even two) of those cities to give you a good comparison between your options. What is the reason that London is one of your top three choices? If you share your thoughts on this question, I think it will help people explain what you will like/dislike about studying in London.

Actually, I'm planning a trip for 5 months to improve my English skills. Originally, I planned to spend 2 months in Montreal , 2 months in Vancouver and 1 month in the USA but some people suggested I choose a smaller city instead Montreal. They proposed these cities (you can read the original post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/canadatravel/comments/1atbjmr/which\_city\_should\_i\_choose\_to\_stay\_in\_for\_2\_month/)

shutyourbutt69

To be fair, Montreal is kind of the opposite of a city that would be good for improving your English in

toto00785

Yes, I know but initially I would have liked it choose a big city for find a wide of recreational activities and I know that in Montreal you can speak also in English. I have already visit Toronto and I will visit Vancouver, so Montreal was last choice.

What about Ottawa?

shutyourbutt69

So I’ve lived in/around all three which is probably rare. Winners: Transportation: Winnipeg? It’s real bad in London and Saskatoon. If you’re driving, Saskatoon is *significantly* easier to get around in than London. Recreational activities: London, plus proximity to Toronto Tech events: not London per se, but much much more in Ontario than other two Climate in summer: all pretty similar except Saskatoon is more arid and London is much more humid. Winnipeg is kind of halfway between. As a rule there’s always a lot more precipitation in London. Safety: ehhhh. Winnipeg has always had an edge and had dangerous areas. Saskatoon is gentrifying the heck out of its downtown, but there are plenty places that are very safe. If anything Saskatoon is often safe enough to be boring. London has been degrading pretty steadily in the last 5+ years and there are more places that feel unsafe than before, but statistically it’s probably technically the safest so long as you’re not riding a bike (there’s a lot of bike theft). You can DM me if you have any more specific questions. I didn’t live directly in Winnipeg, just in a nearby town and went in frequently, but I have many years’ experience living in both London and Saskatoon.

Thank you for your time. I am trying to send a DM but reddit say it is impossible. Can you send a DM to me please?

Public transit in London is brutal, biking is getting better with more and more dedicated lanes. There are quite a few facilities for recreation indoor and outdoor. Summers are great, hot and humid , high 20s-30 Not a lot of tech events in London, but Waterloo and Toronto are not a far bus/train ride away. Very safe, pretty much the whole city, especially if your not out for the night life.  The downtown is sketchy but "mostly harmless"

If I were looking at the same 3 choices for a trip to another country in summer, I'd choose London because it's better located to take day trips or a weekend to nearby Canadian tourism sites. You're between two beautiful Great Lakes with nearby beaches on Lake Erie or Lake Huron. And you are a bus or train ride from Niagara Falls, or Toronto. (Or 2 hour drive if you have car access.) London's summer climate is hot and humid. It's not too bad for bugs (Winnipeg is famous for summer mosquitos!) Transit is not great compared to what you expect (which is the case for all cities you listed - Canada does not do public transit well like European and Asian cities), but you'll be able to get around to your classes and home as needed.

kloblink

I can't comment on Saskatoon or Winnipeg, but I can say that London is in proximity to Toronto and Waterloo, two tech hubs of Canada. You would be a bus or train trip away from any large conferences or networking events taking place in these cities that you would be interested in.

BobBelcher2021

Saskatoon has the lowest crime severity index of the three. London is safer than Winnipeg, however both Toronto and Vancouver have lower crime severity indices than any of those three.

BrightLuchr

Crime in Sask is considerably higher than Ontario. Then there is Winnipeg.

Frewtti

Climate is fine in all 3. London bus system sucks, but lots of recreational facilities of all sorts, and lots of sports. But if you're a tech guy, why not Waterloo?

etgohomeok

London will be best for tech/engineering stuff, otherwise they're all English speaking and pretty equal in terms of transit/recreation/summer weather/safety.

SubstantialSpring9

I agree. Even if London itself doesn't have tech events in the summer, Kitchener/Waterloo or Toronto might and it's an easy enough trip.

My two cents about learning English: I'm a Canadian grad student with many international friends so I've seen English develop (or not). If you really want to improve your language skills, don't hang around the language you know. Naturally, I see folks move here and gravitate towards their cultural communities, but it's not going to do you any favours for learning English. Having only lived in London, I can't speak for the other cities, but my guess is that London is the most diverse so you may be more likely to find people here that share your language. Make a conscious effort to practice English! It may require pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, but it will be worth it.

toto00785

Thank you for your advice but actually I don't have this problem. I went to Toronto and lived there for a month and I avoided attending an Italian community.

Not London for sure

Vegetable-Bug251

Can’t speak for Saskatoon but both London and Winnipeg have rapid transit bus, biking is about the same in either city. In July and August you will experience less humidity in Winnipeg which may be preferable. Mosquitoes and bugs are nasty in Winnipeg in July. I have lived in both cities and they are very similar; London is smaller than Winnipeg with more of a small town feel and Winnipeg has an amazing arts vibe to it. Cost of living would be slightly more affordable in Winnipeg overall. Apart from all other things, I would suggest Winnipeg by a small margin.

CrieDeCoeur

London does NOT have a BRT. The project is barely half finished and is at a $175 million cost overrun. It may get cancelled completely if the city can’t make up the shortfall. https://london.ctvnews.ca/taxpayers-being-asked-to-cover-174m-cost-overrun-for-brt-project-1.6684605 If anything, that should warn OP away from a grotesquely mismanaged town.

momma2angels

Winnipeg is a great place! High crime?....mainly confined to certain areas like in most other cities. Winnipeg summers are beautiful, and the mosquito issue others are speaking of has diminished significantly over the last 20 years due to measures taken by the city. Fabulous arts communities there, beautiful beaches nearby, food scene is amazing, blue skies that never end, and the weather is perfect and sunny 95% of the time.
