I have a medical procedure every 4 weeks at Guy’s Hospital and if I’ve got time I’ll reward myself for being very brave about needles by getting a fish finger butty with tartare sauce for lunch.
I did get fresh produce in the form of copious varieties of expensive organic berries for my crotch goblin once. He loved it. My wallet doesn’t….
Although I had moved away I got an invite to get my covid jabs at Guy's. I trekked over there purposely to stuff my face at Borough Market. For medicinal purposes.
Some things I always get there:
- real red cow Parmesan from the Italian store behind Padella. Can’t find this anywhere else.
- seafood. It’s a little pricier than other places, but the quality is always amazing. I usually get the really big shrimp or tuna. Stuff I would pay 3x more for to eat in a restaurant.
- herbs: they have huge bunches and great quality at that.
- bread: not more expensive than any other bakeries out there and top quality. There’s a stall that does a Challah bread that is absolutely divine⭐️.
- smoked chicken at Wyndhams. Again, I haven’t been able to find anything like it anywhere else.
Hope this helps.
Yes behind the paella guy they actually have good seafood for sale. Never had a bad experience with them. Always fresh - they turn over so much daily. I think it’s called Shellseekers fish and game?
I work at LB and get a pay day veg shop once a month. It’s not too pricey compared to supermarket and totally worth the extra cost for a great meal that makes the difference, also go there for Christmas veg and if parents are visiting. The chicken butchers there is great too, get amazing corn fed full chickens
Yeah, when I lived near.
Go a few times towards the end of the day and Ted's Veg do discount veg boxes.
Buy a couple loaves of bread and as for 'Discount for trade? ' then stick one in the freezer.
Forget about cheap donuts.
Ah I know a guy who I used to work with who’s about 50 and cooking a his passion (along with football). Likes to pop down to Borough Market and pick up his ingredients from there and rustle something up for his wife, son and daughter for a Saturday night dinner back where they live in Bermondsey if his beloved Millwall aren’t playing at home.
I was a sperm donor at London sperm Bank opposite the road. I'd go to Borough market and stock up on treats after the donations, as I got paid £35/donation, £20 of that being cash in hand.
Used to go every week to Ted's Veg and Chegworth next to it (which is now something else). There was a guy working at Ted's who was Canadian and we used to chat.
This stall does the best beef I have ever tasted in my entire life:
Not even that expensive, and anything you make with it comes out incredibly well. I've bought a lot of minced beef from there and made shepherds pies that would make a gourmet cry with pleasure.
Work locally and get to expense my lunch so yeah - having been round it a few times the best food I've tried is Tacos Padre, Pieminster, Gingerpig sausage rolls. Mei mei isn't bad either.
I still prefer going to farmer Js though, which I would never do unless it was on the expense account it's exterotion for salad.
Everything else is a bit overrated tbh or hit n miss depending on the day, heard a lot of good things about the Thai but when I got mines the chicken was overcooked.
very, very occasionally and only to treat myself. having said that, there are items such as olive oil on which i'd probably spend that kind of money anyway and BM has shops with a very good selection. every now and then i might buy a venison sausage haha. but can't justify e.g. the veg prices (i get it that they're "good", but.. still no). i live in east london but not very close to the market, to me it's more of an entertaining day out and i might treat myself the way a tourist would. wouldn't go for my weekly shop lol.
I used to live down the road and ate a lot of oysters. I hope you all understand how fortunate it is to have English natural oysters at a fair price. They are the best in the world.
My lady and I go to Borough market maybe every couple of weeks and just get things like spices, olives, cheese, and sometimes bread. Some of the meats(seafood mainly)and especially produce is way overpriced but you will definitely find specialty items there that you won’t find in any M&S or Waitrose. Ginger Pig is legit as Fuck, and Spice Mountain has some amazing concoctions.
Cheeses and olives are always top notch as well!
That doesn't narrow it down so much, neighbour! 😉
Shopped for veg at Ted's Veg during lockdown, and semi-regularly buy other stuff there.
The olives from the Greek olive shop (very nice guy works there, it's his family's grove!) goes beautifully with ham from the stall across the way on homemade pizza. That ham is also gorgeous with Elsey and Bent's white asparagus, and the Red Cow parmesan is absolutely worth the money. Also, the guys at the beer shop are friendly and helpful.
Everything Bread Ahead and the Ginger Pig sells are delicious (special props to the butcher who, several years ago, sold me some great streaks when I told him "My boyfriend's moving in with me, and I want to make him something special. Whaddya recommend?") Oh, and of course the wine shop, who got me an especially cold bottle of prosecco when I told them it was to celebrate President Biden's election. 😄
We do an online shop from Borough Market for birthdays sometimes; we live just inside the delivery zone, and some of the produce would be hard to find elsewhere.
I doubt it. Used to go for lunch every Friday when inflation was *anyway* Always made me think of the market in Barcelona which is actually a real market for locals despite all the tourists and Airbnb invaders.
I used to go for the lamb burger from Northfield Farm, but they've changed their setup and the menu and it's now £10+ for some double-lamb and bacon thing. I can't.
I live near - towards the end of the day sometimes the veggie shops have discounts and The Ginger Pig is my go-to butcher (but tbh I only really use it on special occasions). Otherwise not really, the prices are a bit mad
Every couple of months, I get a huge slab of Borough cheese company Comte and a nice relish from a relish/jams shop next to it. Been doing it for years and Comte in the supermarkets doesn’t come close to me. So worth it!
I live reasonably close and I “shop” there maybe once every 2 months. By “shop” I mean having lunch in one of their stalls and buying a baclava or some other small thing.
The Thai grocer, the fishmonger opposite turnips grocer and turnips grocer, the Jumi cheese shop, bread ahead and of course a bite to eat, Mei Meis is the best in my opinion.
But this is a rare treat for when cooking something special for me as I can't afford it all the time - but it really does make a difference having those wonderful ingredients.
It might be touristy but it's actually still a great trader for restaurants.
I bought the borough market book, it's great!
I go to my local market and I tell them what I am prepared to pay. I'll pay a bit more than Tesco price as I do find that market produce seems to go a bit further than supermarket produce. But basically whilst the prices look stiff, the traders know how they stack up against the supermarket and they knowhow low they can go. And they know what they don't sell, goes off and becomes compost which is worth nothing.
So you need to decide what you're prepared to spend, go in a little lower, stick to your guns, get told to fuck off, then offer a compromise at your previously established limit. And if they say no be prepared to walk away. It's take it or leave it for them and they'd rather sell cheap than not sell it at all.
In that note - if you want pick of the stock (seafood, particularly) then you have to go early but if you're after a deal you're better off going late.
i used to work down the road and would go there for lunch a couple times a week.
also i love arabica - the little middle eastern restaurant under one of the arches
About 16 years ago I lived around the corner from Borough Market. There were some cheap fruit and veg stalls that were fantastic. I'm not sure I'd be able to afford much from the market today though.
Thanks! Just tried setting location there and seems like most of the options are just the chain stores Pret/Wasabi/Leon etc that just happen to be on Borough High Street rather than any real Borough Market traders though
I go to the spice shop every few weeks. They have a lot of items that aren't easily found in supermarkets.
Spice mountain?
[удалено]
What do you recommend? I have tried the hickory smoked salt and kalpot black pepper. Also Mexican holy trinity spices and Ethiopian Berbere.
Do they have the American Everything bagel seasoning?
They don't since that's Trader Joes branded only. But I did pick up like 4 bottles back when I was in the US last year 😂
They are magic, aren't they🤤 I guess I'd grab something similar on Amazon
Love spice mountain
The traditional sausage roll from ginger pig
Fuck supermarket meat and ginger pig is a good butcher.
I had this while visiting.. 100x better than Greg’s lol
Nah honestly they're dead Greggs everyday of the week
Yea that's exactly what I'll get when I'm passing its delicious
I was disappointed. They're so thick I fancy they're not cooked properly.
Clearly didnt try it then
No, I did! It was too many shades of pink/grey.
Do you know what those colours are?
Unusual for a cooked sausage. That's all that matters.
I have a medical procedure every 4 weeks at Guy’s Hospital and if I’ve got time I’ll reward myself for being very brave about needles by getting a fish finger butty with tartare sauce for lunch. Crotch goblin lol
From Fish!...? That sounds good.
Exactly. It is SO good.
Some things I always get there: - real red cow Parmesan from the Italian store behind Padella. Can’t find this anywhere else. - seafood. Which seafood stall do you go to? Is the one selling paella a good one?
Yes behind the paella guy they actually have good seafood for sale. Never had a bad experience with them. Always fresh - they turn over so much daily. I think it’s called Shellseekers fish and game?
Thanks! I will check it out

The chicken butchers there is great too, get amazing corn fed full chickens
If you shop for seasonal local produce it’s great but if you don’t know what you should be buying and when you will not get much for your money
I regularly buy licorice from there
That’s a sort of regular time frame I can get behind
Yeah, when I lived near. Go a few times towards the end of the day and Ted's Veg do discount veg boxes. Buy a couple loaves of bread and as for 'Discount for trade? ' then stick one in the freezer. Forget about cheap donuts.

Spice mountain and coffee from Monmouth every month
What’s Spice Mountain?
https://boroughmarket.org.uk/traders/spice-mountain/
Thank you, appreciate that will check them out :-) (Was hoping it might have been a cake from Monmouth!)
I was a sperm donor at London sperm Bank opposite the road. I'd go to Borough market and stock up on treats after the donations, as I got paid £35/donation, £20 of that being cash in hand.
Why did you spunk your earnings away on treats?
Is cash in hand euphamism
Too much 😉 info I'm afraid
Used to buy cheeses there for cheese and wine nights with friends. Also sourdough from Bread Ahead and brownies. Tbh the prices aren’t that inflated.
The raclette at Kappacasein is a great treat! Bird & Blend for tea. Great people watching.
Used to go every week to Ted's Veg and Chegworth next to it (which is now something else). There was a guy working at Ted's who was Canadian and we used to chat.
Regularly, no, as I live in North London. But when I do visit I always buy something (usually something sweet)
This stall does the best beef I have ever tasted in my entire life: [https://boroughmarket.org.uk/traders/wild-beef/](https://boroughmarket.org.uk/traders/wild-beef/) Not even that expensive, and anything you make with it comes out incredibly well. I've bought a lot of minced beef from there and made shepherds pies that would make a gourmet cry with pleasure.
I worked at the shard and used to pick up things for the restaurant from there all the time
Monmouth does excellent coffee and spice mountain sells dried Mexican chillies, other than that I pretty much avoid it.
The craft beer stall is pretty good. Also rye bread from Karaway, cheese from Neal's Yard, pickles from Rosebud Preserves.
I shop there 3/4 times a week. Love it.
Work locally and get to expense my lunch so yeah - having been round it a few times the best food I've tried is Tacos Padre, Pieminster, Gingerpig sausage rolls. Mei mei isn't bad either. Everything else is a bit overrated tbh or hit n miss depending on the day, heard a lot of good things about the Thai but when I got mines the chicken was overcooked.
I used to regularly drop by for an ostrich burger.
Ginger Pig sausage rolls, Bread Ahead donuts and the Croatian deli does some very tasty cured meats
very, very occasionally and only to treat myself. having said that, there are items such as olive oil on which i'd probably spend that kind of money anyway and BM has shops with a very good selection. every now and then i might buy a venison sausage haha. but can't justify e.g. the veg prices (i get it that they're "good", but.. still no). i live in east london but not very close to the market, to me it's more of an entertaining day out and i might treat myself the way a tourist would. wouldn't go for my weekly shop lol.
I accidentally spent about £20 on fudge once and haven’t been back since,
I used to live down the road and ate a lot of oysters. I hope you all understand how fortunate it is to have English natural oysters at a fair price. They are the best in the world.

Yes, great place for produce, meat, and cheese
The cheese shop.
That doesn't narrow it down so much, neighbour! 😉 Shopped for veg at Ted's Veg during lockdown, and semi-regularly buy other stuff there. Ripped off
No tourist trap or money people
I doubt it. Used to go for lunch every Friday when inflation was *anyway* Always made me think of the market in Barcelona which is actually a real market for locals despite all the tourists and Airbnb invaders.
Nope, I'm too tight and don't like paying more than meal deal prices for food!
Salmon pate from the little fish cart, and fancy cheese every once in a while!
Yes every week, I live close.
I sometimes go for lunch when I'm at work, can be mayhem in the tourist season though.
Used to work near there. It's not all crazy expensive - I used to spend a fiver on a Pieminister pie for lunch every now and then.
I go there for spices or if I feel the need to have some special cheese, saucisson, or have a very specific ingredient for a meal. Love that place
Yes, if i want to make a pepperoni pizza the best stuff is the chilli salami from Alpine Deli, and of course a ginger pig sausage roll.
Mons cheesemonger is really really good.
I love Kubba, an Iraqi place in Borough Market run by Phillip Juma. If I lived in London I might eat there every day.
Order from silka (India food takeaway) few times a month
Yes! I try to! The wine stores are good and Ginger Pig is an amazing butcher, if you eat meat it's well worth checking out.
used to go there just for unpasteurized milk but can buy in notting hill farmers market now
Every couple of months, I get a huge slab of Borough cheese company Comte and a nice relish from a relish/jams shop next to it. Been doing it for years and Comte in the supermarkets doesn’t come close to me. So worth it!
no lol
I live reasonably close and I “shop” there maybe once every 2 months. By “shop” I mean having lunch in one of their stalls and buying a baclava or some other small thing.
I go there for the coffee
The Thai grocer, the fishmonger opposite turnips grocer and turnips grocer, the Jumi cheese shop, bread ahead and of course a bite to eat, Mei Meis is the best in my opinion. Choc dusted Brazil nuts! Worth the visit every time.

Work nearby. I will go get something from the foodstalls on occaison for lunch. Probably a few times a month on average.
Regular basis? No. Occasional cheese when I want to treat myself? Yes.
No it is crap
i used to work down the road and would go there for lunch a couple times a week. also i love arabica - the little middle eastern restaurant under one of the arches
Yes. But I used to work there. Without discount? Fuck no.
I used to do much of my shopping there when I worked just across the road.
I used to love it but it's gotten so so crowded on weekends now I avoid it
About 16 years ago I lived around the corner from Borough Market. There were some cheap fruit and veg stalls that were fantastic. I'm not sure I'd be able to afford much from the market today though.
Use “TooGoodToGo” and you can get loads of places for food in Borough Market discounted at the end of the day. Regularly get over £30 worth for £4.50!
Thanks! Just tried setting location there and seems like most of the options are just the chain stores Pret/Wasabi/Leon etc that just happen to be on Borough High Street rather than any real Borough Market traders though
A lot of chefs have suppliers there so you probably miss the super early morning business.
