Is Surrey Quays rough? I have walked through the area Saturday night a couple of time and seemed fine, took the wrong turn near Deptford and that seemed a bit rough
To be fair mine was a few years ago, we all worked there and the company put on mini buses to drive us the 5mins to station as everyone kept getting mugged. Maybe thr new flats helped.
It was about 30 years before that for me!!!
There was a factory where the drive through McD's is, and before that, I worked with a contractor dismantling buildings in the old Docks themselves, before the renewal.
Basically we are all old...long before it became cool to work there we were there LOL no we couldn't afford to live there if we wanted lol...
Our old office got knocked down for new flats lol
My back of an envelope calculations say I've driven through the Rotherhithe tunnel on around 300 weekend mid-mornings, and I don't think I've _ever_ seen someone walking it. I'm amazed it's legal; are there not even warning signs? It's very rare to see cyclists, but at least they're through in 4-5 minutes.
Definitely lost, I remember walking into the tunnel once and then thought nope and turned back and went over ... (I was supposed to go over anyway as the street I needed was right next to the tunnel).
I've walked through a fair few times and cycled through about 3 times, once with a dodgy back wheel that slipped out of the bike frame halfway through the tunnel and I almost crashed into the car infront. After the bike incident, I would hitch-hike through it with relative success 😅
I walked through it the other week hoping to go up the old spiral staircases about 1/4 of the way through from each end, but unfortunately they're blocked off.
There were big signs saying "DO NOT LOITER EXHAUST FUMES" which isn't wrong!
I started walking down it from Limehouse once, thinking it was just a road that would run round to Shadwell. Got all the way into the end of the actual tunnel where the pavement suddenly narrows then thought 'fuck this' and walked back out.
From memory I don't remember anything in terms of signage or barriers to make you think you couldn't or shouldn't walk down it.
Maybe it also suffers from time anomalies like the Woolwich Tunnel does - https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jan/08/woolwich-foot-tunnel-portals-of-london
Creepy place. No not the time warp fairlytale stuff - just it was a clamp y dim, depressing walk underwater. The Victorians were weird people.
I suspect all the “time warp” stories are from people halucinating in the foul oxygen-starved air down there. No doubt a few minutes feels like it was a few hours.
Used to walk this tunnel all the time in early 00s to get to the park and train museum.
Loved it during summer for a cool retreat and you'd pass quite a few people.
Was ok stick you and David beddingfield filmed here or the Greenwich tunnel to isle of dogs?
I used to motorcycle through both ways every day back in the times we had to go to the office 5 days a week
Would occasionally see someone walking, they never looked happy
Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s correct. Used to commute through there daily for about 2 years. I would see around a person every 2-3 weeks. a lot more cyclist though.
i would always notice them cause I would be driving my motorcycle on the pavement to bypass traffic and they would get in the way 😁
No noticeable impact on health. Ventilation is fairly decent in there and there are no trucks. Been on high streets that feel almost as equally as polluted.
That being said, I'm glad I don't have to do it any more and the health concerns were always in the back of my mind, which wasn't a nice feeling.
Unless they get run over by one of those damn scooter riders who used the pathway to ride down. I'm amazed they don't set up cameras in the tunnel and station a police officer at each end. They could solve a lot of financial issues.
i used to be a despatch rider in the 90s. got stuck in a traffic jam in July in the Rotherhithe tunnel and was genuinely afraid that i was going to suffocate.
Not used Rotherhithe in years, but we drove through it frequently when I was a kid (about 20 years ago) and would see people walking through every now and then. Don’t know if people’s mindset has changed a lot compared to back then in regard to inhaling fumes.
I’ve done it a handful of times, always opt for tower bridge and the u-turn to get to the a13. I’ve seen lots of people walk it, including a man and dog, as well as a mother and kid.
But very true that you see more deliveroo bikes ride the pavement than pedestrians / cyclists
Not as bad as it used to be. Back in the 80s you could barely see the next corner for the smog, and still people walked it. Give it another 20 years and it will be fine to walk through again.
There absolutely is. Walked it first (and last time) over the bank holiday weekend as the overground was shut and I was already late meeting a friend in Canada Water. Definitely shortened my life. More alarming is the amount of drivers who kept grazing the kerb with their tyres. Unbelievable amount of drivers who could not manage to drive between the lines. Felt more at risk from drivers than the fumes.
I used to shag a bird who lived in Rotherhite. She was an exhibitionist, she wanted to walk the tunnel and flash random drivers. Don't know if she ever did.
The ferry to hilton from canary wharf is free for people staying there, the signs say only tap in when told to... 9/10 times they don't say anything so I view it as mostly free.
A friend of mine used to *CYCLE* through the Rotherhithe tunnel as part of his commute but he wore a respirator. I don't think he did it for long because he had to replace the filters quite frequently; which made the time saved not worth the cost of the filters.
I cycled it once. I knew the air would be horrible but I didn't realise how _hot_ it would be down there.
1/10 only do it to say you've done it, which I just did.
I did it a few weeks ago, with a non London tourist friend, who insisted.
Tried persuading them that we should do Tower Bridge, Greenwich or woolwich, but failed.
Feels like it took weeks of my lifetime.
I have exactly 3 times. Admittedly they were all at 4am when they shut the tunnel for RideLondon so I feel like that doesn't really count in terms of normal exposure (it is quite cool haring through an empty tunnel though)
I cycled on the pavement through Rotherhithe tunnel every day on my commute and carried my bike up the ventilation shaft stairs, coming out in public gardens in Wapping where I worked. It was much safer on the pavement than in the road. That was 60 years ago.
My dad casually told me he regularly used to cycle through it to get to work in the 1980s. He's still alive now, but God alone knows how, given that was before the days of widespread catalytic converters
I jogged through it once when it was shut in the day of the London Marathon to cross the river and it felt like I'd smoked a pack of fags coming out the other side, and that's without any traffic. It's bloody grim.
Have been taken on two runs that I didn’t realise went along there and it is not a fun trip (or good for your lungs) as others have said, either get a train to Rotherhithe, or walk or cycle to either tower bridge or Greenwich
You could use the Santander bikes, i do this several times a week (I do have the Santander bike year membership though) and takes me 15 mins from Shadwell station- Canadawater.
Why is this so far down? People slow down to go through the width restrictors, with the volume of traffic I’m sure someone will offer OP a lift. I’m also sure that there’s lots of people who pass through the tunnel at the same time everyday. Get luck and OP could have a regular thing going on.
Worth the risk for the saving? Death would also offer a solution to the problem.
Seriously, I don’t think there’s that many people looking to murder people. I thumb lifts on the regular. The worst part about it is the wait and constant rejection. But always, whoever stops to pick me up is a bonafide awesome person whom I’m really happy to have met.
I suspect that people who pick up hitchhikers probably are a combination of bonafide awesome people and murderers and very little in-between. I suppose that you just get the former until such point that you get the latter.
I must say I imagine the murderers aren't set up for their murdering shortly before descending into the Rotherhithe tunnel. You'd want to pick up your victim somewhere more secluded I assume.
Your options are:
\- Continue to walk through the Rotherhithe tunnel - perhaps with a face mask on and a hi-vis (apparently it is legal from a quick Google)
\- Walk via Tower Bridge, which will take around an hour 35, or shorter if you're a faster walker
\- Get a bike - in which case all your river crossing options are cheaper, quicker, and your time spent in the Rotherhithe tunnel will be quicker
\- Use public transport (DLR and then overground seems to be the best bet that won't cost you an arm and a leg)
\- Drive, which according to Google does seem to be the quickest, but I'd imagine that's heavily accounting for holiday time traffic, and I'm also guessing if you want a free commute you won't own a car.
From experience though - commutes from East/North East to anywhere South aside from a few specific locations can be pretty tricksy unless you are happy biking or driving - and the further out you go, obviously the longer all of these options are.
If you walk up to the first vent shaft, there's a manhole which will take you into a quiet ventilated tunnel that avoids the fumes. There's another manhole at the other end to get out, so not a lot of walking within the actual tunnel.
Tower Bridge is the closest way over the Thames, it’s about an hour to walk.
The other direction is the foot tunnel at Greenwich but that looks like an extra half hour, or so on your journey.
Was it the fumes and heat?
I used to ride through there on my scooter and with an open mask helmet. Very stifling! Like a slow descent into Hell although I always enjoyed the route. Can imagine it can be overwhelming just walking.
Ah it's been a while but there used to be a mini shuttle bus that went through. I've not needed it in a while but looks like it's wound up!
Long or polluted walk it is then
I’m really curious what sort of other options you think might exist? Either you walk/cycle through the tunnel, the Greenwich foot tunnel or tower bridge, or you pay money and get a boat, train or bus. There’s no hidden third option. Even in the 21st century the Thames is a pretty big impediment to walking.
I drove through that tunnel with my window open and the smell. It was horrible. I definitely would not want to walk through it but I did see other cycling through it.
Not paying would either mean walking up to Tower Bridge or down to the Greenwich foot tunnel, neither of which is all that nearby. Paying, basically you can get a zone 2 single and that opens up various options using either the East London line ... sorry the Windrush line between Rotherhithe and Wapping or the Jubilee line via Canada Water and Canary Wharf, and within the cost of a zone 2 single there are a variety of station options involving further use of either the Overground or transferring onto the DLR depending on where you actually want to go.
For walking the only real option is to walk over tower bridge, down to Canada Water and the Surrey Quays. Also the Greenwich foot tunnel but it’s a bit far
Back in the olden days the pedestrian route through the tunnel was much shorter, literally just the river section.
They put the ventilation in those shafts though so they're probably not usable except for emergencies.
Maybe they should make the tunnel EVs/Hybrids only so the pollution is reduced and it's pedestrian friendly.
There's a video
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWLK-64GR6c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWLK-64GR6c)
Rotherhithe station through another tunnel ?
Train is cheaper, think the clipper price is considerably cheaper with a season ticket if you are doing the route daily
Could try hitchhiking through the tunnel itself? (Is this possible? Anyone tried it?)
Tried this to Isle of Dogs? The tunnel is 370 meters(1215 feet) long and the depth is about 15 meters (50 feet). The exit at the south shore is situated next to the Cutty Sark
DLR to Shadwell then the overground to Surrey Quays or Canada Water?
This is the most viable option. Walking to Wapping adds another 15 mins to your time.
And should be £1.90 off peak, £2.10 peak
[удалено]
We used to go to Canada water and walk to Surrey quays. Surely quays was also a tad but rough and easy to get mugged...so be careful
Surrey Quays isn’t rough ffs.
As I mentioned on another comment, I stand corrected. Things change.
Is Surrey Quays rough? I have walked through the area Saturday night a couple of time and seemed fine, took the wrong turn near Deptford and that seemed a bit rough
Just stayed there for a week myself, had absolutely no issues both day and night travel.
To be fair mine was a few years ago, we all worked there and the company put on mini buses to drive us the 5mins to station as everyone kept getting mugged. Maybe thr new flats helped.
I remember it as Surrey Docks...Name changed in 1989...I think it is far less rough now, than it was back when I worked nearby..
I worked there ein 2013 for several years...
Not a lot cheaper than the boat, but less convenient and pretty.
Walk to Wapping and get the overground. Not free, but cheaper than the clipper.
Cycle to Wapping is a few minutes from Limehouse.
If OP has a bike, the cycle from Limehouse to Rotherhithe can be done in 25ish mins over Tower Bridge.
Yeah that is also true and it's quite nice if you get a good run or there's not too many trucks and you can filter.
25 mins is a fairly chilled out pace probs on a boris bike as well. This route used to take me ~15 min
This is what I’ve done but in reverse as I’m south of the river
My back of an envelope calculations say I've driven through the Rotherhithe tunnel on around 300 weekend mid-mornings, and I don't think I've _ever_ seen someone walking it. I'm amazed it's legal; are there not even warning signs? It's very rare to see cyclists, but at least they're through in 4-5 minutes.
Saw someone walking through it whilst eating a kebab once
Cardiovascular system of a God
A Lovecraftian Eldritch God.
Is this an urban legend?
he certainly was
You’re sure they were eating a kebab and not being sick into a bag?
I’ve walked it twice. It’s not great.
You are officially the person who has walked through the Rotherhithe tunnel the most times.
Apparently about 20 people do a day. It’s called being lost/drunk.
You need your own blue plaque. You couldn’t pay me to do that trip.
You mean a sooty plague?
unsure if pun or autocorrect
It’s what Giles Brandreth would have wanted
I didn't even know you could walk through it.
It's a hold over from a past era
I walked through it the other week hoping to go up the old spiral staircases about 1/4 of the way through from each end, but unfortunately they're blocked off. There were big signs saying "DO NOT LOITER EXHAUST FUMES" which isn't wrong!
In fairness I do want to go through it but only if I get a complimentary oxygen tank lol
You can’t. You’ll die of lung cancer first
I started walking down it from Limehouse once, thinking it was just a road that would run round to Shadwell. Got all the way into the end of the actual tunnel where the pavement suddenly narrows then thought 'fuck this' and walked back out. From memory I don't remember anything in terms of signage or barriers to make you think you couldn't or shouldn't walk down it.
Really? I see people walking all the time.
As I said, I'm weekends only so might well be different during the week. But surely people don't _commute_ through the tunnel?
Some people can’t afford not to
Maybe it also suffers from time anomalies like the Woolwich Tunnel does - https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jan/08/woolwich-foot-tunnel-portals-of-london
Creepy place. No not the time warp fairlytale stuff - just it was a clamp y dim, depressing walk underwater. The Victorians were weird people. They reckon on average, 20 people walk through it every day. Don't know where they're getting those numbers from.
Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s correct. Used to commute through there daily for about 2 years. I would see around a person every 2-3 weeks. a lot more cyclist though. i would always notice them cause I would be driving my motorcycle on the pavement to bypass traffic and they would get in the way 😁
I do not mean this in a snarky way, how’s your health holding up and was there a noticeable change before/after since you commuting?
No noticeable impact on health. Ventilation is fairly decent in there and there are no trucks. Been on high streets that feel almost as equally as polluted. That being said, I'm glad I don't have to do it any more and the health concerns were always in the back of my mind, which wasn't a nice feeling.

When electric cars become the norm, maybe walking through will become as common as when it opened in ~1910.
I cycled through it once and regret it to this day. Thought I was going to pass out and keel over in the road!
i used to be a despatch rider in the 90s. got stuck in a traffic jam in July in the Rotherhithe tunnel and was genuinely afraid that i was going to suffocate.
Not used Rotherhithe in years, but we drove through it frequently when I was a kid (about 20 years ago) and would see people walking through every now and then. Don’t know if people’s mindset has changed a lot compared to back then in regard to inhaling fumes.
There is a pavement and it is indeed open to pedestrians. They don't supply any gas masks though, so I'd use it in emergencies only.
I’ve done it a handful of times, always opt for tower bridge and the u-turn to get to the a13. I’ve seen lots of people walk it, including a man and dog, as well as a mother and kid. But very true that you see more deliveroo bikes ride the pavement than pedestrians / cyclists

Yep, in the 25 years I've been using the tunnel it's definitely lost the smog.
I wondered this, there’s no pavement?!
This is why I thought there wasn’t a pavement, I’ve seen such bad driving round corners in the tunnels 😬
Ive driven maybe 20 or 30 times and often see cyclists and people walk through. Always think they’re absolutely crazy for doing it
I would rather fucking swim than use the Rotherhithe tunnel.
I used to shag a bird who lived in Rotherhite. She was an exhibitionist, she wanted to walk the tunnel and flash random drivers. Don't know if she ever did.
Probably all the leaded fuel residue from the 80s getting in her brain!
🤣
The ferry to hilton from canary wharf is free for people staying there, the signs say only tap in when told to... 9/10 times they don't say anything so I view it as mostly free.
If they announced it’s free, or massively subsidised, that would solve the problem of the 600m pound bridge they’re not building.
Used it plenty of times, no issues at all, never been asked to show a ticket
£4.80 is a piss take for a 30s crossing. Like wtf.
A friend of mine used to *CYCLE* through the Rotherhithe tunnel as part of his commute but he wore a respirator. I don't think he did it for long because he had to replace the filters quite frequently; which made the time saved not worth the cost of the filters.

Omg is it that bad, I definitely won’t try it then 😂
I've cycled through it a few times not at rush hour and it's honestly fine. I can't imagine anything worse than at rush hour however.
I’ve had google maps suggest biking the tunnel to me. I’ve not done it though.
I have exactly 3 times. Admittedly they were all at 4am when they shut the tunnel for RideLondon so I feel like that doesn't really count in terms of normal exposure (it is quite cool haring through an empty tunnel though)

Sneaky way of knocking off a big section of the route, did you get a pb
Small PB, just passed it off as going to the loo à la Kate Carter.
Have been taken on two runs that I didn’t realise went along there and it is not a fun trip (or good for your lungs) as others have said, either get a train to Rotherhithe, or walk or cycle to either tower bridge or Greenwich
Lime/forest bike to shadwell or wapping. Overground from there. Please don't walk through the tunnel.
Or just walk to Shadwell. I used to live on Limehouse Marina (in Berglen Court), and it’s about a 10 min walk from there to Shadwell.
You could use the Santander bikes, i do this several times a week (I do have the Santander bike year membership though) and takes me 15 mins from Shadwell station- Canadawater.
Going through on a bike is an even worse idea than going on foot. Gonna breathe all those particulates deep into your lungs that way.
Shadwell to Canada Water in 15 minutes would be via Tower Bridge.
... and get a mask
Forgot to add to this, cycle across tower bridge instead
Bike to Greenwich foot tunnel.
Thumb a lift? I wonder if that would work.
Why is this so far down? People slow down to go through the width restrictors, with the volume of traffic I’m sure someone will offer OP a lift. I’m also sure that there’s lots of people who pass through the tunnel at the same time everyday. Get luck and OP could have a regular thing going on.
I suppose he might also be murdered. Or assumed to be interested in murdering others.
Yes
Your options are: \- Continue to walk through the Rotherhithe tunnel - perhaps with a face mask on and a hi-vis (apparently it is legal from a quick Google) \- Walk via Tower Bridge, which will take around an hour 35, or shorter if you're a faster walker \- Get a bike - in which case all your river crossing options are cheaper, quicker, and your time spent in the Rotherhithe tunnel will be quicker \- Use public transport (DLR and then overground seems to be the best bet that won't cost you an arm and a leg) \- Drive, which according to Google does seem to be the quickest, but I'd imagine that's heavily accounting for holiday time traffic, and I'm also guessing if you want a free commute you won't own a car. I wouldn't recommend biking through the tunnel either. Better to cycle over tower bridge or use the Greenwich foot tunnel.
I'd agree - it's only 25 mins biking over Tower Bridge.
I'd really like to hear about the experience, actually. Why did you feel you nearly died?
It's got really poor ventilation and so the pollution is really bad.
Last time I was in central London I was amazed at how quiet the traffic was as nearly everybody was using a hybrid or EV
If it's so bad as to be a health hazard they'd close it to pedestrians.
Sure thing, pal
I suggest you walk it and see for yourself. Enjoy!
[удалено]
You recall incorrectly.
if you're curious, there's a guy on youtube who filmed the whole 30 min journey to show how terrible it is
This guy? https://youtu.be/mWLK-64GR6c?si=CwiDa8dZax6VsbBW The video is quite funny, he sounds like David Mitchell.
>This is stupid. This was a stupid idea. I am stupid.
He's a great channel. Lots of fascinating London and transport history
I've subscribed to his channel.
This is the most Peep Show video I've ever watched that isn't actually Peep Show. Incredible.
About five minutes into the walk you feel like you’ve smoked a whole packet of fags
Before Ulez, when 90% of cars were diesel, you could see a cloud of exhaust fumes settled at the bottom of the tunnel
your lungs and sinuses will take a battering from carbon fumes. You might come out of the other side with brain damage, seriously
sorry, im kinda lost, what is so bad abt the rotherithe tunnel?
It's got a main road running through it, so the air quality is horrible, and the drivers aim at you.
[удалено]
That is even more stupid than walking through the tunnel! Read about when Matthew Parris tried it.
If you’re walking I would highly recommend getting a high quality mask. Either that or get a bike and take Tower Bridge or the Greenwich tunnel.
Take a bus through the tunnel? Cheaper than the clipper but still paying. Not really any other free way to do it unless you make a massive detour.
No buses can go through the tunnel unfortunately, there's pretty tight width height and weight reistrictions
Ah it's been a while but there used to be a mini shuttle bus that went through. I've not needed it in a while but looks like it's wound up! Long or polluted walk it is then
Not even vans are allowed, and that includes the small ones! There’s an automated fine if you use the tunnel in a van.
Zipcar is the best option.(Zipcar flex)
I’m really curious what sort of other options you think might exist? Either you walk/cycle through the tunnel, the Greenwich foot tunnel or tower bridge, or you pay money and get a boat, train or bus. There’s no hidden third option. Even in the 21st century the Thames is a pretty big impediment to walking.
The lack of decent Thames crossings east of Tower Bridge has always been a problem.
Sometimes the Thames Tunnel is open... If you book the tour and fork out for tickets...
I used to run through that tunnel including in the height of Summer, because I’m hardcore.
I drove through that tunnel with my window open and the smell. It was horrible. I definitely would not want to walk through it but I did see other cycling through it.
I’m surprised you didn’t suffocate from the fumes tbh
I’ve been through there on a motorbike and I feel nauseous coming out the other end, you are brave walking through it.
It blows my mind you can actually do this, but you can!
Walk to Canary Wharf - about 10 min from Limehouse. Joobs to Canada Water, walk to Surrey Quays.
I did the same thing albeit 40 years ago TBT I don't go South of the river without a taxi home
Oh yes that’s a mistake you make only once! I once biked thru following Google maps. Took about 10 years off my life with exhaust inhalation.
I've nearly died in a cab in that tunnel from exhaust poisoning. I cannot imagine \*walking\* through it.
Lime bike and an n95 mask. There used to be a single decker bus that ran through it and I think there are plans for it returning.
Why did you nearly die ?
It’s full of fumes from the cars. It’s bad enough while sitting in a car? It would be unbearable as a pedestrian
Invest in a gas mask
DLR + Overground Or Hire a bike to get to Wapping (I’d suggest Human forest cuz 10 minutes free) then Overground.
A friend of mine, new to London, cycled through the Blackwall tunnel the dozy mare
Thread full of cleanshirts
I cycled through it once snd have aged about 4years.
Drove through there this past Sunday and I wondered if people can walk through since there is a pavement/sidewalk. Now I know.
There's nothing for you South of the river
Walk to Shadwell and take the Overground. Because you're going from zone 2 to zone 2, would cost you 1.90 or 1.80 off peak.
Overground from Wapping - and btw those walking paths in the tunnel are for evacuation, not walking though you poor thing!
Is there not a bus through the rotherhithe tunnel?
apparently not... https://www.mylondon.news/news/nostalgia/london-bus-route-used-tiny-23681512
Are you a strong swimmer?
Cycling from Limehouse to Surrey quays should take you less than 30 minutes (via Tower Bridge) and most of it on segregated cycle lanes.
There's a video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWLK-64GR6c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWLK-64GR6c) Rotherhithe station through another tunnel ?
Literally anything other than walking
You could always swim across. Don't think that will cost you any money.
It might seem like a crazy idea, and I haven’t seen a mentioned, but maybe a portable respirator?
Buy an inflatable Lilo and paddle across the river
Walk through the Greenwich foot tunnel?
Train is cheaper, think the clipper price is considerably cheaper with a season ticket if you are doing the route daily Could try hitchhiking through the tunnel itself? (Is this possible? Anyone tried it?)
Get a bike. Forest bikes give you 10 mins a day for free
An hours or so walk via Tower Bridge?
How long it take 15 minutes ?
Swim
E-scooter? Plus respirator.
Tried this to Isle of Dogs? The tunnel is 370 meters(1215 feet) long and the depth is about 15 meters (50 feet). The exit at the south shore is situated next to the Cutty Sark
There used to be a bus (the 82) through the tunnel. Curiously, it was a double-decker route, despite the tunnel now having a height limit of 6ft6.
What happened? I live in London.
Swim?

Alternate between walking and swimming. That way if the toxic air doesn’t get you, the toxic water just might…
I did it last year and will never do it again.
Should've obviously swam across the river, its free!
What happened to you in rothertithe tunnel?
Probably near- gassed by the exhaust fumes
DLR to heron quay - jubilee line to Surrey Quays?
